Chapter 28

"Aiden, I'm not getting a good vibe about this place," I said as I slowly took a step backwards. It wasn't actually the place that was worrying me, it was Aiden. Something was off about him.

"Don't be silly Alexandrea, it's a church. Nothing bad can get in here."

I narrowed my eyes at him. "I'm going to go, someone's waiting for me anyways. It was stupid of me to even leave," I tried to let out a casual laugh but it came out sounding wrong, almost like I was choking on the words.

I whipped my head around at the sound of the door shutting us in. "I'm just going to go check if someone's coming..." I trailed off as I started towards the door.

I had no reason for the sick feeling in my stomach but I was trusting my gut. I didn't feel safe with Aiden, not at all.

"Nonsense, come on," he continued through the eery, empty church, "there's a back entrance."

"Alexandrea Stevens, did I not tell you to wait outside the building!?" Death's angry roar came through the walls, of the church that is.

"Shit," I stopped at the same time as Aiden swore under his breath.

I winced as Aiden gripped my hands, his claws sinking into my skin.

Wait a minute, claws?

I didn't even have time to gather my thoughts as he tore through the church, dragging me behind him.

"Stop right there Gabriel," Death's voice bounced off of the polished wooden walls of the chapel.

I gasped as the grip on my tightened and Aiden/Gabriel hissed at the new intruder.

"What the fuck?" I suddenly burst out without warning and I instantly regretted it as the creature through me into the cross that hung suspended from the ceiling. I let out a cry of pure agony as the nails of Christ our saviour pierced the flesh on my back.

The speed at which I was removed from the cross blurred my vision and left me dizzy as I stumbled around on the floor. The pain from my back was a burning sting that tainted my fingers red as I brought them away from the wound.

"Come out to play Death," Gabriel taunted the shadows around the church, how were these things allowed to enter holy ground? Wasn't I supposed to be safe here or something?

"How about no," a reply came almost instantly from everywhere, which confused the crap out of me, where the hell was this guy and why on Earth had he decided to suddenly disappear when I was trapped in a room with this thing in front of me that was, literally, seething with anger and frustration.

With no other target in sight, I was the obvious choice as an outlet for the rage inside of this demon angel thing/Gabriel/my future killer/Aiden. I managed to duck the first attack as the creature lunged for me with it's fangs but what I didn't realize was that it was a distraction from the real problem. I was shocked into silence as Gabriel stuck his hand in my wound and ripped out what I assumed was my heart.

My eyes fluttered as the pain spread through me, like a burning red, scorching hot flame shooting through my body, boiling my blood and lighting my cells on unforgiving, purely agonizing fire. No sound escaped my lips as I fell into a pool of my own blood. The thick black liquid coating my body like oil was the last thing I saw before I clenched my eyes in pain, only to never open them again.
