Chapter 12

Not edited

***

My fingers trembled as I pulled my ponytail once more. This was a crazy idea. I brushed the leaves off my white jacket as I started walking. I'd called an uber and asked them to pick me up two streets down so that Devin wouldn't get suspicious about the random car on the front lawn.

"Anti-social nightclub please," I asked the driver as I slumped back into my seat. Tears sprung to my eyes as I scrolled through my instagram feed, Keatyn was standing in front of a palm tree at the beach, holding a dandelion and blowing it into the sunset. Mason must've taken the photo. I missed my old life.

"Here we are miss," the driver snapped me back to reality.

"Thanks," I said as I got out the car. I stood in front of the place Keatyn and I had always wanted to go to but never gotten around to it. My fake id was a relieving cool sensation against my burning hand. My body temperature had been taking dips and highs all day and it was really getting annoying.

"ID?" the bouncer raised an eyebrow as he studied me. I handed it to him and tried to hide my nerves with a smile.

A flood of relief rushed through me when he opened the door and handed my ID back. I slipped into the club before I had a chance to change my mind.

The neon glow painted the walls as I made my way to the bar with the music blaring so loud that it sent tremors through my body. I loved the rush it gave me, the state of euphoria with music too loud for me to even hear my own thoughts.

"A cosmopolitan please," I scanned his shirt for his name tag, "Aiden," I added once I'd spotted it.

"Aren't you a bit young for that," he said with a knowing smile.

"Shh," I whispered as I put my fingers to my lips. "It's a secret."

"I lied to them too last year," he laughed as he slid me the drink.

"Last year?"

"I turned the legal age last week actually, they still haven't noticed."

"Well cheers to that," I lifted my drink and downed the shot. "When was the celebration?"

"There wasn't any," he laughed.

"What? No way. You have to have like at least a girlfriend or something, with your looks."

"You're awfully forward."

"I call 'em as I see 'em." I said as I downed my drink.

"Wanna dance?" he asked after a few minutes of me scanning my phone for messages. A few "Where the hell are you?" messages from Devin and some "You're dead meat when I find you," messages from Death. How'd he get my number?

"Aren't you working?" I said even though I would be way too happy to dance with him for my own good.

"My shift's over," he said as he hung his apron on the hook behind him.

"I, Alexandrea Stevens, would be delighted to dance with you kind sir," I attempted a clutsy curtsey.

"You look ridiculous like that," he mocked my prim and proper cherade, "but I'll take it," he laughed as he led me to the dance floor.

"I love this song!" I shrieked as Zara Larsson's Ain't my fault started playing.

I started gyrating my hips in time with the beat as Aiden started to dance.

"You're a really good danecer!" he shouted over the music. "You're not too bad yourself," I laughed as he ran his hands down my back.

His touch sent electricity shooting up my spine. I laughed at the feeling. I hadn't felt this carefree in months.

"That was fun," I sat down after a few minutes.

"Yea, you're not a bad singer either," he said as he collapsed into the couch next to me.

"You heard me?" I panicked. I'd never been confident in my singing but I get a bit carried away sometimes...

"Yea, you were really good."

I thanked him as I readjusted my ponytail. "Oh shit," I whispered as I spotted him moving across the dance floor.

"What's wrong?" Aiden followed my stare.

I hung my head so that my fringe covered my face. "You see that guy over there?" I nodded my head in Death's direction.

"Yea?"

"I kinda need to get away, you got a car?" I silently prayed to God that I could get out of this. I wasn't ready for this night to end.

"Better," he said with a mischievous grin playing on his handsome features as he grabbed my hand and led me through the crowd.

"Shit, he's onto us," I hissed under my breath as we sped up.

"Here," he tossed a helmet at me once we'd gotten outside.

"Nice ride." I climbed on to the motorbike behind him.

"Hold on tight sugar, it's going to be a bumpy ride." He kicked the Harley into gear and we tore off into the night. I chuckled into his shoulder as the wind whipped my fringe around my face. I heard another engine rumbling behind us a few seconds later.

Fuck, can I never just have any fun? "Go away!" I shouted at Death.

"He's fast, it's almost like he has a death wish," Aiden grunted.

You have no idea, I thought as I whipped my head around to keep an eye on Death.

"Now then cupcake, get your new boyfriend to pull over before things get ugly," Death's velvety voice slipped into my head.

"You'll have to catch me first," I screamed back at him.

"Have it your way," Death said as he suddenly stopped his bike.

"Fuck!" I heard Aiden shout over the screech of the bike as he floored the breaks to try and dodge the huge truck that had just turned the cornwe in front of us.

My screams got lost in the wind as I crashed against the ground. The distinct crack of a bone caused me to cry out in pain. The sharp, jutted stones of the pavement tore through my flesh as my blood pooled out over the pavement.

"Holy shit," Aiden rushed over to me. A bruise was starting to form on the left side of his jaw and he had a few scratches on him.

"I'm fine," I winced as I tried to get up. Death was already heading towards us. "You have to go!" I shouted at him. "Run! As fast as you can!"

"No way I'm leaving you like this," he insisted as he helped me up.

"Goddamnit! You'll get killed!" I snapped. His face paled at the word killed but he still refused to leave.

"Stay away from her," he warned Death but I heard his voice break. He wasn't just scared, he was terrified. Every instinct in his body was telling him to run, it was human nature, a natural reaction and yet he didn't move, he stayed by me. Was he mental?

Death's laugh sent chills through me. "Isn't that cute? So protective and yet there's nothing you can do to stop me." An electric blue smoke escaped Aiden's mouth and slowly travelled through the air towards Death.

"Stop! Please!" I begged him as Aiden's body went limp next to mine. I struggled to keep him up as Death continued. "Please!" The tears were flowing freely down my face, smearing my makeup and mixing with the blood.

Aiden gasped for breath as Death stopped. He was pale and cold while Death looked more alive than ever. A rosy red flushed his skin and his green eyes glowed so bright they looked as if they were illuminated.

"It's time for you to go home Kitty," Death taunted me.

"No, please," I still struggled to keep the tears back. "Please just let me make sure he's okay."

"I'm afraid that you've lost all your privileges Kitty, I'll make sure your boyfriend gets home safely."

"Please don't hurt him!" I cried but it was too late. I was already standing in my bedroom. I rushed over to the door and turned the knob with fumbling fingers. "No!" I wailed as I pounded against the door. "Let me out!" I demanded.

No one answered me. I slumped against the door in defeat as I slipped off the blood stained jacket. I was burning up again.

"I'm sorry!" I screamed into the cool air. "I'm sorry," I cried. I was ugly crying now, I couldn't stop. I dragged my bloody body to the bed and tried to cry my problems away.
