【When the Rain Started Falling】

A combination of colors had collided accompanied by booming sounds of projectiles escaping the gun barrels with sheer force leaving the wall shattered, edges black and burnt. Rion, with good reflexes, immediately took action as she tightly held her restoration gun and raised both hands, crossing them over each other for a block. The red-head got tossed around by the impact, with her black beret sent flying, rolling onto the ground like a rag doll being thrown by children. She tightly shut her eyes, gritted her teeth and ignored the pain done by the explosion as the number of scrapes and bruises were added onto her body.

Rion knew it was coming; she thanked God for letting her ears grab a familiar sound that might have brought her death if it was charged long enough. She pulled the metallic trigger at the right time to at least save herself from becoming a piece of barbecued human flesh.

The Japanese-Korean coughed some dust that had gotten in let her eyelids lift to see the haze of brown clouds blind her. She bit her lip, knitted her eyebrows and pulled herself up, putting her raven colored beret back onto her head, getting ready for what’s coming as she started grabbing her fear and shutting it into a box inside of her, never to come out. Adrenaline rushed into her veins as the haze seemed to have lightened and when it did, what came into her was a balled fist aiming for her porcelain doll face that she immediately blocked with her bruised arm. She swallowed all unnecessary feelings and looked at that man’s hazel eyes straight on with her own glare as she straightened herself up to avoid that hit driven by force.

“Recreate…” Rion cursed under her breath as she gritted her teeth.

“You’re from Judgment now, I see.” A conclusion the brunette came up with upon seeing the department’s symbol on the red-head’s headpiece as he accompanied his voice with an English accent, smirking at Rion, clearly mocking her as he let out a chuckle. “You think you can hide now, can you?”

“Don’t kill her, John.” Another man said as he appeared from the haze that was slowly vanishing, his clothes like that of the man in front of Rion, only with his hair colored with crows’ feathers and his skin like that of paper. “She could be a hostage.”

With all that talking, Rion brought all courage and gathered force on her left leg as she lifted it up and kicked the man hard on the waist, making him flinch and taking steps back.

Rion bit her lip as she jumped backwards and started to run, leaving the men

“Tch!” The English man said upon Rion’s departure, making him and his companion get on their feet and run after her, both of them grabbing another type of gun of a different color as they ran, shooting their projectiles on the running Asian, only to miss their shots.

Rion felt the oxygen running out in her lungs as she started to speed up her pace, avoiding the crossfire. ‘What terrible luck I have.’ She cursed in her thoughts, biting her lip, as she kept her restoration gun and grabbed two other ones with the shape of pistols, another type. She threw herself behind a broken pillar, sliding her shoes on the sand, making small brown clouds fly on mid-air as they slowly vanished.

The red-head felt her heart thumping, almost to the point that she thought that it’ll come out of her chest soon. She took small peeks behind, accompanied by rough panting as she let her back lean on the discolored pillar.

“Damn it, damn it, damn it.” She whispered to herself repeatedly; tying to ease her unnecessary feelings that could possibly lead to her end, as the pressure began to swallow her up.

Taking another peek, a blue light had shined pass her, scratching her cheek, tainting her white face as it started to drip out some blood.

“Found you.” The men said simultaneously as they took their steps closer to the girl. “Hide and seek is over.”

Rion came out of hiding, straightened her arms as she pointed the guns on the mad men. ‘No choice left, huh.’ She thought, biting her lower lip as she pulled the triggers rhythmically. Smaller red bullets came out of their barrels, injuring the men in their arms and legs making them scream in pain as their blood splattered on the ground mixing up with the dust and sand. Stray bullets hit the stone angels and saints as the church became a messed up place for nightmares as Rion put out a rotten face in disgust.

Rion kept shooting and in the corner of her eye, blue-like electricity currents had appeared from the sky, making her freeze her actions, making the men run to her, staggering. It was far from her, where the lights had appeared but it was noticeable. All worry had started to swallow her up. An image forming in her head filled with familiar faces---her comrades.

“It can’t be…” The Japanese-Korean whispered to herself. “Lightning…?”

It was an unusual sight. In the current world, lightning strikes or thunder don’t appear in mid-air. There was only one explanation for that and what could it be other than an irregular?

It was then; the red-head noticed a small moving thing in a rectangular shape, coming from the place of lightning. She pasted a smirk on her face as she hid both guns and put all force on her legs as she started running to the church’s leaning bell tower.

Verdammt!” The raven haired man screamed as he chased Rion’s tail, hitting his English comrade on the head, harshly telling him to go after her with him as he started blabbering stuff in German.

“What the--- When will they give up?” Rion said upon taking a peek behind to see the Europeans chase her.

The red-head slipped her hand on the first gun she had used and prayed that it has finished charging as she started climbing the dusty steps of the snake-like stairs, swirling around the leaning pillar until she reached the rusty bell on top. Rion, trying to catch her breath, hid behind the discolored formed copper carefully to avoid falling. Her ears started ringing, her heart pumped adrenaline as footsteps on the concrete stairs became louder and louder, later mixed with heavy breathing by the men.

“急いで、急いで、リオン、急いで… [Hurry, hurry, Rion hurry…]” She mumbled under her breath as her fingers shook in panic, trying to reload the gun once more with chromedite and began charging it. A beeping noise was emitted from the gun as she let it go louder and louder.

Blue bullets had begun to pass through the rusty bell, emitting a disturbing noise in Rion’s ears as the blue projectiles grazed her shoulders. “もう少しだけ...ただもう少し.... [Just a little more…Just a little more…]” The red-head mumbled under her breath, ignoring the scratches as the sound from her weapon began to hurt her ears. She looked once more to the scenery to see it move closer and closer; that black vehicle.

“今! [Now!]” Rion’s eyes shot open. She stepped out of her spot and quickly stood at the edge of the tower, leaving a smirk for the men. Leaning backwards, she let gravity do its work as she fell, smiling, pointing her gun to middle of the bell tower. All sound, all noise began to mute in Rion’s ears, her heart felt like stopping as she saw her shoulder-length red hair curving out on the ends, being flown upward, her skirt fluttering in the same direction revealing black gym shorts beneath. “The End.” She whispered and pulled the trigger. A blast of red light came from the gun barrel and shot through the stone structure and crumbled. The leaning piece of stone began to shake and the cracks began to spread as both men’s screams were heard before they got covered in rocks.

Rion then landed safely, on her feet on a black truck, catching her jet black beret and putting it back on as she stared on the crumbled structure and sighed.

“Rion!” A familiar voice came into her ears when her name was called, prolonging the O as her blue eyes caught sight of a blonde girl’s head coming out of the window, smiling at her.

“Move.” She sighed, crouched down the edge of the truck and let her body slide through the small entrance.

The red-head got inside successfully, kneeling down on one knee, as if bowing to a master; only that she isn’t, dusting her shoulder with her hand as if finished with an exercise in gym class. She opened her eyes and stood up, her head almost touching the vehicle’s ceiling. The truck was large, spacious and painted in pure white. Her comrades sitting on the truck’s floor---since there are no chairs in the back seat---- in the same state as her.

“That’s Rion!” The blonde jumped, clinging on Rion’s shoulders annoyingly. “Our cat!” She cheered loudly as the red-head began to pursue her efforts in taking the blonde off of her with an irritated face.

“Now, now, Jamie,” A woman with black hair that reached stomach and hazel eyes, at the age of nineteen said as she cuddled with a man about her age. “Rion will die before the enemies even touch her if you choke her like that.” Kang Kyun Ri, Judgment’s Squad Four leader, said with a chuckle. “Right, Chi Soo-Oppa?” The raven haired  looked up at the man she, his hair dyed silver, eyes of the same color shot though hers filled with love, his lips giving out a small smirk as he nodded, making Kyun Ri bury her face on his chest, while Rion looked away, repulsed. She wasn’t used to that kind of things.

“Aw! Kyun Ri I was just happy that Rion’s fine.” Jamie, Judgment’s fifth squad leader pouted, finger-brushing her blonde strands of hair. “Right, Rion?” Her eyes beamed as usual like that of nine years ago, making Rion nod in defeat, trying hard not get into an argument caused by nonsense with her best friend

“Well, if you put it that way,” Kyun Ri chuckled, then taking a peck on Chi Soo’s lips. “사랑해요 [I love you]” She said to him with sparkling eyes with Chi Soo repeating the same words.

“Ew.” Jamie reacted upon seeing the couple.

“Quite a show you put up there.” Kiran Arya called with his normal Indian accent, folding his arms.  “Did you kill them? Were they irregulars?” He asked, curiosity wrapping around his voice.

“If they were irregulars then Rion wouldn’t be standing.” Chi Soo laughed as he continued brushing Kyun Ri’s hair. Rion on the other hand, had to bite her lip to hide her irritation.

“No, they weren’t irregulars and no, I didn’t kill them. They’re just injured.” Rion sighed, rubbing her temples. “At least I hope they’re alive.” She whispered to herself turning into the girl who hated killing nine years ago, unheard by her comrades.

The Japanese-Korean sighed once more as she turned her head to the driver’s seat, a man with a familiar face driving. He had blonde hair, green eyes, a splitting image of Judgment’s leader; Roxas Lazerdean, Roland Lazerdean looked back to see the red-head safe and sound. The older brother smiled at the red-head seeing that she’s fine. “Nayuta called me.” He said, not letting his smile drop.

“Who else would call you?” Brown strands of hair started to pop out in front of Rion, a boy at the age of fourteen smiled and laughed cheekily. He then paused to see everyone’s faces still the same. “Eh? Wasn’t that funny?” Cole said, his lips pouting. “I was hoping that Alison would laugh.” The brunette laid his eyes on a woman, her arms folded, eyes closed, her red hair that was cut only to reach her neck, standing at the very end of the truck beside a girl, her black hair neatly tied up to a side ponytail as she started to fidget with her fingers. “Or at least make Rikka look at me…” Cole whispered in low spirits, staring at the girl next to Alison.

Jamie skimmed Cole, as he started to bow his head. The blonde knelt down next to him, grabbing all light into her cerulean eyes and held both his hands. “Rikka-chan will notice you someday. I know she will.” Jamie said cheering the boy’s spirits up 50% hearing that the aloof Japanese girl his age, Rikka Kiseki, will notice his efforts.

Cole and Jamie then began having their own conversation. Well, it was Jamie. It wasn’t that surprising to see her get along with the younger leaders. She doesn’t even know if both of them are considered to be ‘young’ they may look innocent and may be mistaken for children still studying in middle school but there was a reason why CHROME let them graduate earlier than the others. Yes, both are prodigies, excelling in the field of combat, academics and who knows what.

Rion sighed, her eyes scanning the entire truck, counting all leaders inside. It was then the sixteen year old began to wonder. She knitted her eyebrows in worry as worry had begun to fill her up once again. She counted, re-counted and repeated the process and still got to the same number of people--- eight.

“Roland…” Rion called, making the emerald eyed blonde look back at her. “Excluding you, how many of us are in here…?”

Rion saw in the corner of her eye a flash of uneasiness hitting Roland. He bit his lip and took his eyes off the red-head.

“I knew that she’ll notice…” Rikka said with her monotone voice.

“Notice what?” Rion began to sink in frustration, turning her head from right to left.

The atmosphere got tensed, heavy, as if thousands of rain clouds were surrounding them, still invisible to their eyes. Their eyes travelled astray, all voices seemed to be muted. Rion’s whole body shook like an unknown virus was beginning to plague her, twisting her insides and messing with her brain.

“Jamie…” She looked back at the blonde, eyes yearning for an answer. “We’re supposed to be ten. Where are the others…?” The blonde only let her eyes avoid her.  Rion then pictured an image in her head, blue electric strikes from the sky coming down to the ground then accompanied by loud roars from the dark clouds. “Don’t tell me, it was the lighting…”

Rion witnessed everyone go silent, as if her voice was unheard, taken by some sort of wizard. She then looked worriedly around the truck as she took a few back-steps until she felt her back on the metal platform. “Irregulars…?” She said wide-eyed, her fingers brushing through her full-cut bangs.

The silence lasted for a few seconds until Chi Soo’s sigh was then heard. He took one last brush on Kyun Ri’s hair as the silver-head began to stand and come closer to the Japanese-Korean. “Rion, it’s like what you said, irregulars.” He explained as he tightened his fingers into a fist. “Veronica and Mei were captured and there was nothing we could do but pray for the Flags to rescue them.”

The names passed into Rion’s ears, only to make her insides burn. They were captured, Veronica Sanchez and Mei Zhang, her comrades were captured and all she could do is wait. She didn’t like that. No, she didn’t want that. The current world is cruel, that was proven to her life nine years ago as she stared helplessly in front of a pool made out of flesh, a blank canvas sprayed in red paint. Never in her life did she feel that scared, that helpless. Waiting was the thing Rion hated the most because the longer she let herself sit around and pretend that everything was fine, the more people die in vain. Rion hated that, she hated waiting; she hated the fact that people were to die if they weren’t helped, knowing that she could have saved them. It was a fact that Rion suffered for nine years.

“Is waiting all we can do?” She asked, gritting her teeth, her fingers slowly touching her palms as they tightened into fists. “What if they die?

Death was something to be feared in the world. The word ‘die’ simply shook all the people inside, including Alison and Rikka themselves despite their emotionless demeanors.

“Are you crazy?” Kyun Ri said, a high pitched screech accompanying her words. “So you’re suggesting that we turn back, get burned by lightning and die with them?” She angrily took steps in front of Rion. Well, Kyun Ri never really knew how to hold her temper. “If that’s the plan then whooo let’s just kill ourselves now for a pleasant death.” The Korean said with her fingers wandering over her head like she was sprinkling fairy dust on the red-head. “I’d rather be killed in CHROME or in Claris rather than killed by those…monsters!” It took a while for her to describe them, the irregulars.

“We won’t know if we try!” Rion said raising her voice. “We just can’t leave them, knowing the fact that we can still save them.” She tried explaining as that scene slowly hardened into her mind. “Isn’t the guilt swallowing you up too?” She said in a tone higher than the last one, which clearly let everyone focus on her while Cole and Rikka hid behind the older leaders next to them---Jamie and Alison--- both of them were scared to be exact, seeing Rion raise her voice was something she wouldn’t do for the next ten years or so, considering that she was well composed, and silent.

“Rion, calm down, you’re scaring the younger ones.” Jamie whispered onto the red-head’s ear, resting her hand on her shoulder as Kyun Ri continued to glare at Rion.

“You think we should leave them too, Jamie?” Rion said in a rather shock tone. Jamie was her best friend, and knowing her kindness she had witnessed since they were kids, she was clearly hoping for the blonde to stand up alongside her.

Jamie looked down on her shoes, biting her lip as she let her hand slide to her side, biting her lip. “I wouldn’t leave them, trust me but we also have to consider the fact that we’re weak.”

Rion didn’t expect this. No one was on her side, no, that wasn’t the right term; no one was brave enough to take her side. She bit her lip, she didn’t like where this was going. Her eyes then shot wide open as she ran to the driver’s seat, she knew what she was going to do and she didn’t want this farce it was far too ridiculous in her opinion to leave comrades out of fear. Without hesitation, she grabbed a hold of Roland’s hands and stirred the car to the opposite direction.

“Rion!” The older brother screamed in shock as Rion started to take the wheel away from him, making the vehicle lose control.

“Rion stop!” Jamie then screamed, placing both hands on the girl’s shoulders, trying to pull her away from Roland.

“미쳤어? [Are you crazy?]” Both Kyun Ri and Chi Soo screamed in union as all started to do their efforts in separating the Japanese-Korean from Roland as the younger ones continue to stare in confusion.

“G-Guys, let’s stop…” Cole stuttered beside Rikka as they sat on the corner to prevent themselves from flying across the truck like a pair of dice.

Rion continued stirring it straight to the direction where the lightning sparks had appeared. Roland on the other hand, was in a position in which he couldn’t move. With all the people going in front there was no way he could even lift a finger. All the male blonde could do was only telling Rion to stop.

After a few more seconds, Rion got ripped out of the driver’s seat as she got pinned down by Chi Soo. But before they could wipe off beads of sweat from their forehead or sigh in relief, it was as if a photographer had taken their photo with a gigantic external flash. For a millisecond, all visions went white, together with their souls. Chi Soo then loosened his grip on the red-head as his mouth agape and his eyes widened in shock. It was what they never wanted to encounter in this twisted mission---lightning.

“Everyone, out of the truck!” Roland shouted at the leaders, snapping them out of their trance.

All did what was asked as some broke the windows and slid themselves outside, or took the vehicle’s door, even breaking the windshield just to get out.

Breaking a window and successfully getting out of the truck, Rion once again found herself rolling on the ground as clouds of brown dust emitted from the action started to fade. Opening her eyes, a line stroke from the sky onto the black vehicle, blinding her vision for a second and when she got her sight back, her cerulean eyes only widened to see red and orange sheets of hot flames came rising to the spot where it was hit.

All leaders were in the same state, heart pumping in a fast rate, their whole body being shaken by fear itself. But for once, those people got to see fire in a large amount for once. Sure, the Earth cannot support life; that is why humanity suffers, they created vaccines, pills and any other medical stuff imaginable just to keep living since a normal body system would only have at least an hour or less to live in the world’s current state but it was still capable of making fire.

All heads were turned to the people dressed in black, smirks surrounding them, it wasn’t the right time to be relieved and it was certainly not the time to embrace the fear lurking inside of their hearts.

“Get ready.” Rion commanded as she stood up, gathering her courage to fight. Of course, the others followed. They stood in position, they held their weapons and pasted serious glares, this wasn’t the time to run, it would be impossible to do so.

The people in black, Recreate soldiers, started to do the same as they gripped different kind of guns, daggers and blades, in their eyes reflected what they desired---- honor, victory and a pool made out of Restore’s blood.

“Well, well, well.” A man stepped forward, his accent like that of those Italians, his hands on his side emitting blue sparks that danced around his fingers. “Judgment is starting to man up.” He said arrogantly as licked his lips. “Want to smell your own burning flesh?” He pasted a smirk.

“Irregular.” Alison said in her normal monotone voice as she knitted her eyebrows and tightening her grip on her guns.

“Well, I had a good life…” Kyun Ri said shivering.

“I won’t let that happen.” Chi Soo went in front of her, taking all his fear and shooting it out of her system. “I’ll protect you no matter what.”

No one could hide this fact. It was true that the leaders tried hard to stop thinking negative and throw away their shivering posture but who wouldn’t shiver in front of an irregular? They are monsters of the world. No matter how many of them Restore captures and experimented, they never knew the source of their powers.

Before they knew it, bullets had started raining to them. The leaders dodged the crossfire, separated and took advantage of the decaying buildings.

Rion was in another adrenaline-rush situation once more but this, this will probably be worth it if she could save Veronica and Mei. Since the Recreate’s soldiers are still in there, so her captured comrades will certainly be there too.

She took deep breaths and turned on her ZSI to connect with the others. Blue squares gathered and formed a hologram overlapping her eye as her comrade’s voices were heard, asking different questions.

“Cole! The irregular’s condition?” She screamed to the boy. He would be the one to know most of the irregulars due to his studies to them.

“His code name is ‘Switch’ he controls lightning and---“

“Just get to the point already!” Rion heard Kyun Ri’s screeching voice in the background, cutting the brunette off.

“Okay, okay!” Cole replied. “His condition to use his powers would be useless since as long as there are dark skies, he can control lightning.”

“What?” Jamie screamed. “That’s unfair! How the hell do we stop him? Oh God, dammit dammit.” She cursed as she formed another tongue twister.

Rion bit her lip as she heard the guns not stopping to give off their bullets. Her heart pumped harder than ever, she even felt her Irregulars were indeed something to be feared, they have this special power that no other normal human can do, lightning, fire, telekinesis--- name it and there’s one, what’s worse is that they are only from Recreate. But there’s one flaw in irregulars, they have this so called ‘condition’ it means that there is a certain rule they need to follow to use their powers. For example, an irregular can read minds. In order to use this power, that power needs to make eye-to-eye contact with the person he wishes to read. If he isn’t looking in that person’s eyes or if that certain person won’t look into the irregular’s eyes, then that power is rendered useless.

“Crap.” Rion whispered to herself upon knowing the condition. Her fingers shook and it was definitely the reason why her grip loosened.

The red-head stepped up from hiding and started shooting at random soldiers, injuring their arms and legs as blood splattered on the walls. It was either that or she fired at the buildings to crush the enemies.

The irregular slowly took steps forward as he placed his hand above him, pointing to the grey sheets, the sky, and immediately swiped his hand downwards as a flash of lightning came in front of Rion, making her shake even more.

This was the very first time she encountered such a monster. She heard the stories, she saw the deaths but never did Rion know that her heart would be racing, her body would be shivering and not only once did she try to swallow the fear away. She needed to do that; she needed to rescue her comrades.

“畜生! [Damn it!]” The Japanese-Korean said, almost out of breath. She was running all over the place, changing hideouts, dodging bullets-----dodging lightning! She leaned on a broken wall and tried hard to catch her breath. She felt her heart coming out of her chest, her limbs shaking and her lungs burn, as if exhaling and inhaling were the same thing.

Rion took a glance at her comrades, Chi Soo was with Kyun Ri, Jamie was hiding along with Rikka and Cole as they got protected by Roland. Alison took a rhythmical approach hiding behind a building and shooting when the coast was clear as Kiran followed her example.

It was then when Rion was filled with concern, a blue bullet had taken her direction as Rion barely noticed it. Without paying much attention, the red-head felt herself getting tackled by someone as both of them went through a window, shattering it to pieces as the shards got pulled in by gravity.

Lying on broken shards of glass, she felt weight on her body, her limps were aching, she was panting hard and her head pounded like thousands of people were paying taiko drums inside of her brain. Rion let her eyelids flutter open as she flinched in pain. Her vision was smudging, showing a pattern of clear and blur. When her eyes finally focused on the scene, she felt the weight disappear. The Japanese-Korean sat up and found herself inside an old office room. Dust successfully invaded everything. Colors hardly distinguished, the wallpaper ripped to shreds as electrical wires spread everywhere tangling tables and broken table lamps. Whatever building she was in, she knew that she would be alone for a few minutes.

“Are you okay?” A voice invaded her ears, making her flinch. She had almost forgotten that she was tackled inside.

A boy about her age was standing in front of her, dusting his clothes with his hand. His jet black hair covered his forehead, his skin pale as paper. There was one thing Rion could only think about upon seeing him----a student, or so she thought. It was because of his navy blue jacket and white polo with a red necktie in the middle, black skinny pants covered his legs and red high-cut sneakers covered his feet, a crimson scarf wrapped around his neck. What only made him not cut out for a student was his katana, unsheathed, dangling on his belt.

Rion then stood up in panic. This boy shouldn’t be here in the battlefield of bullets and a human freak that could control lightning by the use of dark skies. “Who are you? What district are you from?” She asked in panic, letting her ZSI identify who the stray boy was.

“What do you mean?” He tilted his head, slightly irritated.

Rion continued to observe the hologram searching for results. All of a sudden, red pixels accumulated as they finally invaded the blue space, Rion could no longer count the number of ‘ERROR’ s she could see on her ZSI. Whoever this boy was, he wasn’t her comrade.

“Who are you?” She immediately took her gun and pointed it at the stranger. “You’re not from Restore. Tell me who you are.”

She continued observing the boy from head to toe as she waited for an answer. Nothing seemed to be wrong, in other words, it looked like the boy was from Restore himself but that wouldn’t be happening. Restore records everything, the coders never leave a single piece of information not stored, and how could they have one flaw in just registering this boy into the zone districts. Rion bit her lip in frustration. Each second that passed waiting for an answer felt like an eternity but that wasn’t the only thing that bothered the red-head, she was scared as well. The reason was his eyes. His eyes stared daggers at the girl, almost to the point that Nayuta’s death glare was not haunting anymore upon seeing them; they were painted at the color of blood, the color of roses, crimson red. As if a teenage vampire had come to life.  The more Rion tried to come up for an explanation for his rather unique quality, the more she questioned it.

“I am Rion Yume, Judgment Squad Two Leader; I demand to know your identity!” She raised her voice, trying to shake her thoughts out of her head.

The boy simply shrug, he lowered his gaze as if he was bored of playing a game. “Is that how you thank a person who saved your life?” He asked; slight irritation somehow accompanied his voice.

“I’m the one asking questions.” Rion said tightening her grip on her weapon. “Spurt out nonsense and expect a bash of nuclear energy hit your face.”

The boy sighed in defeat and raised both of his hands like he had committed some sort of crime. “Fine, fine,” He breathed, closing his eyes for a second. “My name is Rain Cross.” The boy said, red eyes once again making eye contact on her.
