Chapter 3 - The Calm Before

Kaplan inspected the room. His sidearm out and aimed, both hands gripping it. It was some sort of conference room. Images and folder documents were laid out on the table. The Red and white symbol of Umbrella taped on them.

Seemed they were having a meeting before the Red Queen triggered the lockdown and the lab's defences.

But why had she done that?

That's the one million dollar question.

And what had attacked the complex? The place was deserted. Nobody in sight.

Kaplan turned his attention to the blonde in the room. Alice, Y/N had called her.

Normally, that wouldn't be such a big deal.

Kaplan knew Y/N was big on protocol. But the fact that he was referring to the two civi's (and Umbrella Operative) by name was odd. The man only ever got like that if there was something deterring him to do so.

Maybe he wanted to make it easier for them.

'Who knows? Maybe he's interested in them.'

Though Kaplan turned to watch Alice as she glossed over a document on the table, and frowned.

'Maybe just one of them.'

But Kaplan had only ever seen him get like that if he was under pressure or if something was nagging him. Or, something personal was on the line. He was fidgeting before, being more cautious with the civi's and overall.

Something he hadn't really seen before.

Something that spooked him.

Sighing, he turned his attention back to the board he had been staring at. Before searching the rest of the room. After checking every corner, he turned back to Alice.

"Hey. We're done here let's get—" But she wasn't there.

"Fuck." Kaplan cursed and looked around the room. She was just there. He made his way to the door in a jog rush before the loud sound of something falling to the ground reached his ears. Not far from the end of the corridor.

Causing the man to rush over in a slight panic.

Slowly, Y/N entered the room. His M4A1 perched tightly in his grasps as he pushed the door open with the barrel of his gun. With only half the room in his view, he rushed in fast, his weapon aimed for any hostiles.

But he came up short. As he stopped in his tracks, and looked around the office. It was empty, really. Nobody was inside.

Two twin desk laid opposite sides of the walls. One on the far left was a mess, wrappers documents and junk littered it. He had a notion as to who that belonged to. The computer screen blank and turned off.

While the one on the right was clean, tidy and more organised. The same computer set up as before.

Lowering his weapon. He breathed in heavily before making his way to the desk on the far left. He approached it and looked down at the metal desk, before removing everything off of it with the butt of his rifle and into a trash can below.

His eyes scanned the now clean desk. A dial up phone set across from side, a photo frame near it.

Picking the photo up.

It revealed three people. One older man with grey hair and a slouch moustache. Smiling happily as he had one arm around a woman next to him, and his other enclosed on a young boy below them.

Next to him was a woman, slightly younger, but pretty much the same age. She had flaming red hair and freckles donning her cheeks. Her grin more clear from the sun basking down on them. Her arms hugging the boy stood in front of her.

And lastly. A boy who looked around seven years old. Short brunette hair covered by a black baseball hat, and blue eyes. A huge smile across his face.

A happy family.

But no where in sight.

Y/N cursed slightly, his rifle settled down on the desk and the photo in his hand. He reached up with his right hand to his jaw and ran it across, clenching whatever frustration laid in his mind. Before sighing again.

"Where the hell are you?" He asked. But no one answered him. Shaking his head, his thoughts ran wild of what could of happened to them.

"L/N?" A soft voice called out to him, making him startle, not expecting anyone to intrude on his vulnerable moment, and drop the photo frame in hand. It fell to the ground and in the process, shattered on impact.

Y/N cursed silently, before turning to the source of the voice. It was Alice. Watching him  from beside the door, half her body inched through the doorway, the other outside. Not wanting to impose on him too much.

Noticing her gaze on him. He cleared his throat. And bent down and picked the photo up, minding the broken glass.

Before he could say anything to her. Y/N heard Kaplan call out to them.

"We're fine." Y/N responded back to him. "Just dropped something." He muttered under his breath.

Staring at the photo in his hand, Y/N sighed and placed it in the empty pocket of his vest. Before bringing his gaze up to look at Alice, who still stood by the doorway. Her face more sheepish now that she had been the cause to make him drop it.

"You okay?" Y/N asked her.

She nodded 'Yes.' opening the door slightly, and taking a step forward. Before stopping, not wanting to get close in case she overstepped.

"Are you?" Alice asked, looking around the office room. Then to Y/N and then onto the photo he had placed in his vest.

She had seen the name plague outside. She had connected the dots.

His family worked here.

Slightly surprised at the question. Y/N flustered slightly, embarrassed at the idea of her being concerned, over him? Was she?

He looked down at the floor where the glass was for a moment, before shifting his gaze back to her yet again, an awkward keen to those blue eyes of him.

Something Alice had begun to expect.

"I'm fine." Y/N moved and grabbed his rifle from the desk before heading towards the door. Alice moving out of the way and to the back to follow him out.

Suddenly, Y/N stopped just before exiting the room. It almost caused Alice to walk into him.

Slouching his shoulders slightly, thinking over whether he should say anything. Before sighing, and turning his head to the right, to look behind his shoulder to her as if only for a moment before returning his gaze ahead.

The sincere words leaving his lips in a whisper.

"Thanks for asking."

The made up team of L/N, Kaplan, Rain; Alice and Matt finally met up with the others at the end of the section of the complex.

Having found nothing worth mentioning to the rest of them.

Though Alice realised L/N hadn't showed, or told, anything to them regarding his parents.

'Could be they don't know he has family down here?' She thought, looking over at him for a second before returning her gaze ahead.

Funnily enough, she was surprised the man had said anything to her at all. He was content on avoiding the subject of his family to them but he let it slip with her. Hadn't sworn her to secrecy. So that was something.

Did he trust her?

'Doubtful.' Alice thought as they continued to another corridor and then to another set of stairs like before.

Though he was fine with giving away his name to her (even if it was his last name) all well and good. Considering the rest hadn't bothered to talk to her much, not even giving her the time of day.

Though Kaplan had been sort of social? To her, at least.

Considering L/N and Kaplan seemed to be tight. Probably friends even outside of the Corps. So that was good at least, having an extra person not being indifferent to her.

The rest were okay, Shade could be a hard ass from what she gathered, but understanding given the situation.

Rain was a bit of bitch at times but not outright hateful. Just smugly, if Alice had to guess.

Speaking of Rain.

"Looks clear." The woman announced as herself and J.D scouted, their guns aimed down sight ahead of them.

Shade moved forward with the her at his back and the team moved in. Them now past the stairwell and into a different part of the complex. A long corridor with flashily lights and giant glass containers on the left of them. Some kind of yellow substance/liquid inside.

One was leaking water onto the floor. So she guessed it was built to contain something, or someone, alive.

Kaplan moved forward, observing the mess one of the tanks had created, before sighing. "This is gonna slow us down." He brought his wrist device up to look over it. "Our route to the Queen takes us straight through these labs." But they were in lockdown. No way into them without shutting the Red Queen down.

Shade nodded. "Rain, J.D, see how bad the flooding is." He turned to the technician. "Kaplan, find us an alternate route."

Alice continued to stay close to L/N as he stood guard. Watching over the different paths for anything, while occasionally making sure she, Matt, and Spencer were fine.

Yet again, speak of the devil.

"What happened here?" Spencer asked, his gaze going from the wreck of the labs and to the leader himself. Giving L/N a sideline look.

Shade took a glance at Alice, then to L/N and then back to Spencer.

"Five hours ago, Red Queen went homicidal."

"That's putting it mildly." L/N said as he backed up against one of the tanks. Crossing his arms over. "She sealed the Hive and killed everyone down here." There was a bitterness in his voice that Alice detected and only she knew why.

"Jesus." Spencer said in disgust, backing away slightly.

"Like I said. Homicidal." Shade continued. "When we realised what was happening, my team was dispatched to shut her down."

"Why did she do that?" Alice asked, horrified at the act. How many people had died?

"We don't know." L/N said, causing her shift back to him. His eyes had taken a darker look. Lines on his forehead knotted into a frown. Something she hadn't seen on him until now. "Certainly wasn't no attack from outside, or we would've seen something by now."

"Agreed." Shade replied. "Could be sabotage, infiltration, anything's possible."

Alice merely nodded, her head turning back to L/N who laid his head back in a sigh.

"Jesus!" Suddenly Matt jumped back in fright as a thud came from the tank beside him.

Immediately L/N moved, pulling Alice back, grabbing at her arm to pull her harshly (but not without cause) his weapon aimed at the yellow filled glass tank. As the rest of the team still present aimed their guns at it.

It was a woman. Floating in the tank, she looked dead, from what Alice could tell. Eyes closed, skin greatly pale and almost close to rot.

Her back against the wall, Alice exhaled a breath slightly, helping her calming down.

Out of the corner of eye, she noticed L/N staring at her. His eyes almost bordering concern, before they masked back into the usual stoic ones.

Though his tone of voice was different.

"You alright?" He asked her, his weapon now down, his head cocked slightly to the side.

Alice looked up at him.

Shaking her head 'Yes.' Before letting out a little chuckle. Something that almost made the man smile, she could tell by the twitching of his lips.

Before she uttered a little shudder, the low temperature underground wasn't the best, with the lockdown it was even worse.

All that and of course because she was wearing a dress.... with no, underwear. The thought making her cheeks heat up before subsiding with a shake of her head.

Something the brunette man next to her took notice of. He looked down at himself, before sighing and looking at Spencer.

His face was blocked to the side so she couldn't see what he was thinking (she couldn't even if he was facing her) but he walked over to the man, Spencer.

Something she didn't expect, or the words to come out afterwards for that matter.

"Hand me your jacket." It sounded like a request. But from the look of it, it was almost like he was ordering the man.

Spencer turned to fully face the man, an eye brow raised. He made a scrunch up face, before his eyes settled on Alice. And his face cleared up in understanding of what L/N wanted it for.

"Oh, I... Yeah." Spencer stammered before removing his jacket slowly, at first.

A thing that Alice had figured out by now. Was that L/N was anything but patient.

"God." The man muttered with a roll of his eyes before ripping the jacket out from underneath Spencer. Though it wasn't considered harshly, she could tell there was something going on there.

He didn't trust Spencer, and Alice didn't know why.

Though again, him waking up on the train inside the Hive when he was supposed to be topside was suspicious, so maybe that's why he was hostile (if just unkind) to him. So she was fair to him being hostile of unknowns, he had been like that slightly to her in the beginning.

"You're welcome." Spencer muttered back.

L/N muttered something back but Alice hadn't heard it, his whisper out of earshot.

Walking back over to her, L/N draped the black jacket around her and patted it down. Giving her a nod and a small smile that almost looked forced. Though more likely he was nervous, Alice thought. Meaning he wasn't usually at all like this.

He then moved over and stood next to her, in the middle of her and Matt.

"Huh, and they say chivalry is dead." The female medic remarked sarcastically as she held down the fort. Looking back where Rain and J.D left.

Alice merely shook her head, and tightened the jacket around her. Covering herself up and seeking any body heat.

"No jacket for me?" Matt asked sarcastically.

At that, L/N gave a sheepish look. Alice couldn't tell if it was real or just put on.

"Sorry. Left your jacket up stairs. You're more than welcome to go back for it." He turned to look at the yellow tank with dead woman in it to prove his point, Matt doing the same.

Alice hid a chuckle at the look Matt give the soldier.

"No, no. Think I'll stay with you guys."

"That's what I thought." He said before looking back at Alice. Her gaze was focused on the woman in the tank, he followed her gaze, before snapping a finger in her view.

Knocking her out of her stare.

Finally getting her attention, he asked. "You happen to remember anything yet?" He asked softly, an understanding behind that stoic mask.

She shook her head. It felt like all she was doing was shaking her head.

"No. Not much." Though she faintly saw the memory of... being in a most perilous position with her fake husband, Spencer. That wasn't something to just let loose about.

The man before her nodded, before going to Spencer. "What about you? You remember anything?" His voice was the same, no harshness. Just curiosity.

"No." Spencer said. "Nothing before the train."

'That's good.' Alice thought sarcastically, as L/N slouched further back against the wall, his arms crossed and almost touching hers.

On that note, anything they were remembering was too short or nothing concrete.

It was nerve racking to her, and she hated it.

Not knowing anything.

'Damn it!'

"I've found an alternate route, but it's gonna cost us some time." Kaplan announced to Shade.

The two of them conversing nearby.

"We double back through the offices and cut through Dinning Hall B, then we're right back on track."

"Time is something we can't afford to lose." Y/N called over to them, catching their attention.

The three shared the exact same thought.

"But it's our only option." Shade summarised.

Suddenly Rain and J.D arrived back.

"Sir, no go. The whole level's flooded." Rain explained to him.

Y/N cursed. 'More shit just keeps getting piled on.' He greeted his teeth.

Shade thought the same, and cursed under his breath. Giving a short nod. "All right, we're behind schedule." He called out to the whole team. "So let's move it!"

The team moved out, not before the last guy (the rookie Kaplan) give a short nod to Y/N, almost mockingly acting like the Captain.

Y/N let out a surprisingly subtle chuckle, pushing himself off the wall and looking at Alice.

In turn, she gave him a smile and mocking nod of her own.

Causing the man to smile slightly before picking his rifle up and going ahead. Alice following at his side.

They all left the room onto their next, eventual destination.

All while failing to notice that the dead woman in the tank...

Had opened her eyes.
