Chapter 10 - The Red Queen

Racoon City - The Hive.

Present Day.

"...They used us as a distraction. Used my men as bait so they could evacuate the higher ups. And then left them behind when they needed them the most."

Y/N explained his time in New Bagdad and how he got demoted to their team. And to say they were shocked, was no surprise,

"Closing the doors, leaving us behind. It's the only variable plan they have for this exact scenario. Just like last time."

"Jesus Christ." Kaplan whispered, his eyes out of focus, as he looked down helplessly.

"And you're only just telling us this now?" Spencer questioned. "When we're trapped half a fucking mile underground?" Y/N threw the man a glare. "We're going to die down here. All of us." Spencer exclaimed as he paced the room.

Alice herself was too shocked to say anything, as she watched Y/N slumped on the floor, his back against the wall as his hand tightened around his pistol.

"No we're not." Y/N said, finally looking up at the others, and to Alice, who shared a look of determination. "We're getting out alive, all of us. If it's the last thing I do."

"We have to find a way out of this room." Alice finally spoke up, speaking to Y/N as the man got up from the floor. She watched him momentarily, before it clicked in her mind.

Alice rushed over to the desk of the control room and grabbed the bag used to shut down the Red Queen, and marched off to Queen's chamber.

"What are you doing?" Rain called after her, as Y/N quickly followed after the blonde woman.

His curiosity also piqued.

"Where are you taking those?" Y/N asked as he quickly caught up to her, and grabbed ahold of her arm to stop her.

"I'm turning her back on."

"What?" Y/N's face scrunched up in obvious distaste for the A.I. "What the hell for?"

"She'll know a way out of here." Alice insisted as he let go of her arm. And locked eyes with him. "Do you trust me?"

Strangely, he did.

"Yeah." Y/N agreed and she pushed ahead, as he turned back to face his team. "Alright, she's got a pretty solid plan. As team leader, I approve. Any objections?"

"Maybe—" J.D said sarcastically.

"Don't wanna hear it." Y/N called back as he went after Alice into the Queen's Chamber as the group followed after them.

"That homicidal bitch killed half my team." Rain muttered darkly, her disagreement for this plan clear in her tone.

"That homicidal bitch may be our only way out of here." Alice bit back as she began setting up equipment to turn the Queen back on, with Y/N helping her.

"Considering the way she's been treated, I'm sure she'll be happy to help us out." Spencer said sarcastically as he crossed his arms.

"Shut it." Y/N hissed, before turning to his best friend, Kaplan. "That circuit breaker you were talking about, you can bypass it right?"

"Yeah." Kaplan answered.

"So get to it." Y/N ordered as he turned back to Alice and shared a look.

A look that spoke volumes.

A few minutes passed before Kaplan called back. "All right, circuit breaker is disabled. This time if I hit the switch, she won't be able to shut down. She's gonna fry."

"Good work." Y/N praised as he slapped him on the back.

Immediately the hologram of the Red Queen appeared, only for her hologram to cut out.

"Kaplan?" Y/N asked him, hoping for an explanation.

"The initial charge must have damaged her boards—"

"Ah, there you are." The sinister voice of the Red Queen breached their ears, transmitting through the various speakers. "Things, I gather have gotten out of control."

"That's one word for it." Y/N muttered.

"Give me that fucking switch right now. I'm—" Rain shouted as she tried to strike her module, before being interrupted by Y/N who grabbed her and pulled her back.

"I did warn you, didn't I?"

"Just tell us what's going on down here." Y/N said as he let go of a pissed of Rain.

"Research and Development."

"What about the T-Virus?" Matt asked.

"The T-Virus was a major medical breakthrough. Although it clearly possessed highly profitable military applications."

"How does it explain those things out there?" Kaplan questioned, wondering how the he those zombies even existed.

"Even in death, the human body still remains active. Hair and finger nails continue to grow. New cells are produced and the brain itself holds a small electrical charge that takes months to dissipate. The T-Virus provides a massive jolt both to cellular growth and to those trace electrical impulses. Put quite simply it reanimates the body."

"It brings the dead back to life?" Rain questioned, her tone of disbelief.

"Not fully. The subjects have the simplest of motor functions. Perhaps a little memory. Virtually no intelligence. They are driven by the beast of impulses, the most basic needs."

"Which is?" Y/N asked, almost hesitantly as the group began to fully realise the capacity of such a virus, and how dangerous it could be if it got out.

Only one answer was given.

"The need to feed."

The group deflated, and Y/N himself held his hand to his mouth and scratched his jaw more out of nervous habit than anything.

"Why did you kill everyone down here?" Matt asked, wanting to know the reason of his sister's death.

"The T-Virus escaped into the air conditioning system, and an uncontrolled pattern of infection began." The Red Queen explained as Alice paced the room, her nerves in panic as the others were showing similar signs. "The virus is protean, changing from liquid to airborne to blood transmission, depending on its environment. It's almost impossible to kill. I couldn't allow it to escape from the Hive, so I took steps."

"Steps?"

"You must understand. Those that become infected, I can't allow you to leave."

"Whoa." Spencer exclaimed. "We're not infected."

Alice and Y/N looked at each other, before looking at Rain who was fussing with her bandage on her hand.

Where she had been bitten.

"Just one bite, one scratch from these creatures is sufficient and then you become one of them. A check of my systems indicates my main drive circuit breaker has been disabled. May I ask why?"

"Insurance." Alice said sarcastically. "We need a way out of here. If you refuse to help at anytime, we flip the switch. Understand?"

Suffice to say, the Red Queen was more than favourable and agreed to help them escape the Hive, so as long as they didn't shut her down.

She quickly pointed out an emergency hatch that they could use, and they immediately got to work.

Rain opened to the hatch, looked down the extremely dark hole (a ladder off to the side) and then turned to face Y/N to her right.

"After you."

The group proceeded down until they hit a corridor. The four Umbrella operatives taking the lead, pistols out as they advanced while Alice and the two other men stayed at the rear.

"What the hell is this place?" Spencer asked.

"The utility tunnels." Kaplan answered as they moved ahead. "They run underneath the Hive for water, gas, and power lines."

But, it seemed the tunnels were like a giant ass maze.

"We've been through here before."

"Keep moving." Y/N ordered as he led the charge, heading down another tunnel, his pistol out and ready for anything. With Spencer's constant whiny, it was getting harder and harder to even think.

"We're going round in circles."

"This is the route the computer gave us." Kaplan insisted.

"Why are you listening to him!?"

"Enough already!" Y/N barked as he turned around and grabbed Spencer, before slamming him against a chain linked wall. "Those things are still behind us. We have no choice, but to keep moving. You understand?" The man went to say something but was suddenly grabbed from behind by a zombie, instantly Y/N pulled him back (along with the others) as they moved a away. "That mesh isn't going to hold. Keep moving!"

Immediately zombies began to swarm them, some coming an open grate which the team ran to and pushed shut as their arms came through the kinks in the chain links to snatch at them.

But while they were occupied, Alice turned around when she felt one grab her, and elbowed it in the face hard, killing it. Before she looked over and saw more of them coming.

The woman immediately ran towards the nearest one, and hefted herself upwards and grabbed the railings above, latching onto the zombie's neck with her legs and snapped it like a twig, killing it as well.

As that happened, Y/N noticed as he watched the scene unfold and silently approved. Alice, Y/N thought, was a A-grade fighter.

Immediately he pulled away while the others held the grate back and rushed over to her, shooting a zombie near her, and then placing his pistol in his holster. Before engaging in his own hand to hand combat.

Reaching forward, and snapping one of the zombies neck, then kicking one underneath him and crushing its head quickly as Alice continued her own assault.

But it was quickly coming apparent that they were overrun. Dispatching one more, Y/N tapped Alice on the shoulder for her to fall back and immediately turned up, to look at the sections of pipes high above.

High enough to avoid the zombies.

"Up on the pipes!" Y/N ordered and the team followed through, as he and Alice held the zombies back with their excellent CQC skills. Wishing to save ammo, Y/N resulted with quick jabs and kicks to their legs before smashing their brains in while Alice used her own skills, quickly snapping their necks like absolutely nothing.

"Come on let's go!" They turned around to notice that most of them had gotten up onto the pipes except for Rain. Y/N quickly turned back with Alice in tow.

"Go!" Y/N told Alice. "I'll be right behind you." He got out his pistol and shot another zombie in the head, as Rain did the same.

Quickly Alice climbed up with the help of Matt, and then reached down with her hand for Y/N, who had just blew another infected's brains out. "Come on!" She shouted for him.

Cursing, Y/N made a rush and jumped, his hand quickly lashing onto Alice. Huffing she pulled him up with help from Kaplan.

"Thanks." She nodded her head and turned for Rain. Only to notice that the woman was fighting against them on her own. "Rain!"

Except, the soldier in question wasn't doing to well. She got overwhelmed and was bitten three times before she could get up onto the pipes.

For a few minutes, everything seemed to flow down. As Rain just stared down at the infected, seemingly out of it. As her wounds bled, as if she didn't even notice.

"Rain? Rain." Y/N called out next to her, as Alice crouched up to his side, watching the woman.

"What?"

"We gotta do something about your wounds." Y/N insisted. "Won't last long if we don't."

"I'm fine." The woman insisted, but Y/N, he wasn't convinced, at all. He went to touch her arm, but she ripped herself away from him. "I said I'm fine!"

She started talking to the zombies, shit talking almost. Spitting them, taunting them.

"She was right." Kaplan said, more to himself as the group turned to him, (minus Rain) with questing looks in their eyes. "We're all going to die down."

"No, we're getting out." Alice corrected him.

"She's right." Y/N agreed. "We'll get out. We have to."

The group picked up the pace again, taking it slowly across the pipes as they navigated through the complex arch ways and dark pathways.

Until they got to the end, a single pipe lead across one of the rooms. One that they would have to balance across.

Also, below it, was infested with zombies.

And they were many.

Rain, along with J.D, Matt and Spencer went ahead first. Successfully getting over to the other side. Before it was Alice next, balancing herself across, as Y/N was behind her, and followed by Kaplan.

But suddenly the soldier grimaced, as his leg began to flare up again. He stumbled and caught his hand against the support beam of the pipe.

Something Alice took notice of.

"Y/N, are you okay?" She called back, and he looked up to meet her gaze. Only for whatever he was about to say was cut off by the support beams for the pipe snapping in half under the pressure, causing the pipe to come apart at the scenes. "Y/N!"

Y/N collapsed against the pipe as he and Kaplan collided against each other, as the pipe broke away.

As the pipe fell apart, Alice jumped, only for Matt to grab hold of her hand and pull her up. Alice turned back around hurriedly, and what she saw made her stomach twist painfully.

"Oh fuck!" Y/N shouted as he and fell to the floor hard (as Kaplan managed to grab onto the remains of the pipe and keep himself above) their only way across destroyed, and their escape impossible.

And also, down where the zombies were.

"Son of a bitch!" Y/N groaned as a zombie latched itself on him, trying to bite him as he held him back. Kaplan himself had managed to pull one off of himself attacking, but Y/N was stuck. His pistol lodged stuck in his holster.

"I can't see!" Rain shouted, her vision clouded as she couldn't make the shot. J.D himself was out of ammo, and had already proceeded ahead of them, scouting it for them.

"I could use some help!" Y/N called out, fear gripping him as the zombie's mouth got closer and closer.

Just when the zombie was about to tear his face off, the zombie collapsed and fell off of him as a single gunshot pierced the air.

He looked over quickly to see that Alice had Rain's gun in her hands, her eyes wide, as she lowered it.

Immediately Y/N reached out and grabbed onto whatever was left of the pipe as Kaplan had already climbed up, having escaped his own zombie's grasp.

"Come on Y/N!"

"You almost got it keep going!"

Kaplan reached his hand out and Y/N grabbed, as the younger man pulled him up. Panting hard, Y/N breathed in as he made it to safety. But stuck on the other end of the pipe from the others, with Kaplan.

Surrounded by the dead.

"Okay, stay there." Rain cautioned them as they backed up against the wall, trapped in-between the zombies, and wiring of a fence.

They're only option to escape would be to jump down, and get past the zombies.

"Hold on." Alice told them, locking eyes with Y/N who looked pure frightened, something she hadn't seen from him before, and shook his head, as Kaplan looked down at all the zombies. "We're gonna come get you."

She turned to the others. "We need to cut this wire and throw it to them. Then we can go get them. Hold on!"

Kaplan got his revolver out and emptied his gun, revealing only one useable bullet while the rest were spent. Y/N ejected his pistol mag, only to notice he only had three bullets left.

Still not enough to even put a dent in them.

"That's lucky." Kaplan said sarcastically as the two shared a somber, and even, defeated look.

Sighing, Y/N turned to lock eyes with Alice who looked insanely worried, her hands clutching the wired fence between them as her knuckles turned white from the pressure.

In that moment, he only had one reason, one sure thought for her.

"I want you to go." Y/N ordered them, her, as he loaded the mag back into his pistol.

Alice looked at him in shock, then at Kaplan who shared his order, and then back to Y/N. "No! We're not leaving you, either of you."

"Yes you are." Y/N insisted, as his eyes glassed up slightly at the fact that he, and his friend, were goners. "That's an order."

"No." Alice repeated, shaking her head as her voice broke, at the realisation of what was happening. "I don't take orders from you."

"What are you going to do? You can't kill them all." Kaplan said, slumped against the wall, defeated.

"We're not going anywhere." Y/N shook his head, a sad smile on his face. "Now I want you to go. Now!"

Matt and Spencer picked up Rain and began moving her, hoping to catch up to J.D, as Alice turned to face them, and then back to Y/N. A pained, and even sad, expression on her face.

"I'm not leaving you." Alice said, tears began to form in her eyes, as her hands fiddled with the wires in front of her.

She didn't want to leave him.

Not after everything that had happened. Not after what he had been towards her. Kind, caring, strong. He had been there for her, even when he didn't have to.

And especially not after she was starting to get to know him, and dare say, even trust him.

Alice trusted him, and vice versa. There was mutual respect between them, something that had grown tremendously in the past few hours, and something else gnawed at her stomach with newfound desire.

Perhaps petty, but out of them all, she liked him the most. His strength, his humour, his willing to protect his team, his friends, even if it meant hell for him.

And how selfless he was. Despite the short comings at first, he grew on her, and the cold, professional demeanour chipped away, and revealed just a man with a big heart.

Y/N L/N.

A man she didn't want to let go.

"Alice." Y/N whispered her name over the growling of the undead. As the woman felt fear and despair grit her, and tears began to form in her eyes. "GO!" He screamed, shaking her out of her trance.

She stiffed, and shook her head, before taking one last look at him and leaving. Trailing after the others, she followed. Only to come to a stop and flinch, as the sound of a gunshot sounded, and then another one followed shortly afterwards.

Slouching her shoulders, she focused on getting out alive, as Y/N wanted her to do.
And moved ahead, going after the others.

"You know. This isn't how I imagined I'd go out." Y/N told his best friend. The gun encased in his hand, shaking slightly.

"Me either." Kaplan replied as he brought he revolver closer to his head. "How did you want to die?" He whispered.

"Maybe... old age. Surrounded by my loved ones." He snorted. "Or, maybe in a shootout, you know, go out fighting."

Kaplan laughed. "Guess this doesn't count as going out while fighting."

"No, either this," Y/N moved his pistol up and to his head. "Or them." He then pointed it down at the zombies."

The two shared a look, and they moved their respective guns to their heads, as their breathing elevated and hearts thumped uncontrollable.

In that moment, despite how he was giving up, he was sorry. Sorry for failing his parents, his team, and his friends.

But at the same time, he was glad he was able to help the others escape. Especially Alice.

His mind drifted to her, and his thoughts on her were like nothing he had ever had for anyone. He wondered what could have developed if he had been able to make it.

In the end, all he hoped was that she survived.

But then a doubt began to play in his mind, and the fear of dying scared him. He didn't want to die, he wanted to live. But they were stuck, they couldn't get out.

But, what if they could?

Even if they couldn't, they could try. And trying to succeed was better than just simply calling it quite.

Fortunately for them, they both had the same thought.

The two soldiers pulled their guns away from their temples and brought them to the zombies instead.

Bang!

The two zombies were killed instantly, and they fell over, falling onto the zombies below them, crushing one or two, as it distracted the rest of them.

"You're gonna have to work for your meal!" Kaplan shouted as he threw his empty revolver at the zombies, before turning to Y/N, who grabbed him.

"Come on let's go!" Y/N said, dragging Kaplan with him. "We're not dying today." As a set of newfound strength filled him, he climbed down to the left side with the least zombies and shot at another killing it, Kaplan followed him, his boots hitting the ground.

"Tell me there's a way out!" Y/N said as he punched a zombie in the face and kicked another down and crushed it.

"Shit, shit, shit. Okay, err, access corridor this way." Kaplan ranted as the zombies finally went after the two, them trying to catch up to as they lugged it down the dark hall.

The two made their way through the corridor as the zombies chased them. As they rounded another hallway, they finally saw a door.

"There!" Kaplan exclaimed as he moved forward, dragging onto Y/N as his wounded leg slowed him down.

There were more zombies though. A small group of them.

"Fuck!" Y/N cursed and brought up his pistol and shot two incoming zombies, using his last two bullets before switching to his knife and hand to hand as Kaplan did the same.

The two took down the rest of them (there only being four left) and rushed to the access door leading to another part of the Hive.

"Get the door open!" Y/N ordered as he turned around and held his fists up, ready to hold off the zombies.

Kaplan typed in the necessary code but it beeped with an error. "Son of a— The code's not working!"

"Goddamnit!" Y/N raged as he kicked a zombie in the leg, before wrapping his arms around it and snapping its neck.

"Come on! Come on!" Kaplan urged as he typed in the code again but still received the error.

The younger man looked back to see Y/N taking down another zombie as the rest of the zombies arrived.

A whole mob of them.

They were done for.

"Maybe we should've kept those bullets." Y/N thought aloud, as his slouched shoulders, as the zombies were upon them.

"Yeah." Kaplan said, his eyes dull and afraid.

"Well, let's go down fighting." Y/N readied his knife as Kaplan nodded and stood up beside him, ready to keep going as long as possible.

Yet, when the zombies were just about to reach them, an alarm sounded, blaring and suddenly the door behind them sounded with a hiss, and opened for them.

Y/N gasped in shock, and dragged a very disbelieved Kaplan along with him. Rushing inside as the security door shut behind them.

The two panted, both from exhaustion and just pure adrenaline. Before the a familiar childlike speech surrounded them through the speakers.

"You're welcome."

That was all the Red Queen said, or gave them, as the two operatives looked at each other, before breaking out into laughter at their own ironic luck.

Despite hating and not trusting the A.I.

It turned out to be the A.I itself, that saved them, from their deaths.

"I'm starting to like this Queen after all." Y/N said, a grin on his face as the two soldiers moved out.

Unaware of what was happening with Alice, and the others.

A/N: Aye! Two more chapter until the end of Resident Evil and then onto Resident Evil Apocalypse!
