Chapter 26 - Next in Line
By the time Izuku left the Nighteye Agency, word of his meeting with Sir already reached campus. Or at least, it had reached All Might.
"All Might?" Izuku asked when answering his phone. He hadn't expected his mentor to call him, but then again he might just be curious about how his meeting with Sir Nighteye went.
"Young Midoriya!" he shouted from the other side of the line, making Izuku flinch. "Why am I getting these concerning texts from Sir Nighteye?! Why is he accusing me of withholding information?! What does he mean by you being the last in line?!"
Izuku bit his lip, unsure of how to react to that. He knew he slipped up when he told Sir Nighteye that he wouldn't be able to pass on One For All anymore, but he didn't expect All Might to find out this quickly. He thought he'd had the entire train ride to UA to mull over what he was going to say, how he was going to bring the news and explain why he hadn't said something sooner. Everyone had been so worried about him back then, it just wasn't the right time, you know? And after that... Well, there was never a good time to tell your predecessor that you screwed up a quirk that had been passed on for nine generations now.
"He told me you said One For All is going to die with you, that the quirk lost its ability to be passed on! What do you mean by that?! Why is this the first time I'm hearing about this?!"
"Please calm down, All Might," Izuku asked. "I-I can explain."
Could he really though? How could he ever explain his reasoning when this All Might had no idea what Izuku had been through? He tried his best to explain over the phone, earning some weird stares from the other people on the train. It wasn't easy and All Might freaked out more than once, but Izuku managed to make it sound like he had things under control.
"I'm the one who'll end AFO's reign, so there's no need for a successor," Izuku said, trying to reassure his mentor. "Besides, I wouldn't want to burden anyone with this faith. Quirked people can't handle this power for very long, you know? And the quirkless are a dying-"
"What are you saying about quirked people?"
Oh, right. All Might didn't know about that part yet.
"The reason all of the holders die young," Izuku explained. "The power of OFA is too much for their quirk factor to handle. We don't have those restraints since, uhm, well, you know. But since there are less and less...of us, it would be hard to pick a successor without drastically decreasing their lifespan."
Yep, he was definitely getting some looks right now... Luckily he was almost at his stop and off this train. All Might needed a minute to wrap his head around that new information, but it wasn't what was most important right now.
"Does anyone else know you aren't able to pass OFA on anymore?"
"No, I've only told Sir Nighteye," Izuku sighed. Not that he meant to do that. He'd just gotten way too emotional and after that whole talk he had with his friends about opening up the other day... Well, it just kinda slipped out, you know?
"Are you planning on telling the others?"
"I... I don't know," Izuku admitted. "It's not that important, right? I mean, it doesn't have a lot of consequences for us. It doesn't change our plans or restricts me in any way."
"...If you say so," All Might sighed, knowing there was no way he'd convince his student right now. "Anyway, I'm glad you were able to get your work study with Sir Nighteye. Make sure to impress him and prove your worth!"
"Of course! Plus Ultra!" Izuku exclaimed, instantly making himself smaller when heads of other passengers turned towards him, reacting to the loud noise. Izuku really had a knack for embarrassing himself, didn't he..?

Skipping school to attend hero work studies was nothing new to Katsuki, even if this was the first time he'd done it while still in his first year at UA. That detail didn't really matter though. He was a fully fledged pro hero before the timeline got messed up, after all. And now Mirko would know that too. He doubted she'd actually read the file Eraser sent over though, even after agreeing to team up and keep an eye on Jikan, so he had a copy on him just in case.
"Sparky!"
Katsuki tried not to get too ticked off by the greeting. The agency building was still as impressive as always, bustling with activity as sidekicks and interns ran around. Some dressed in hero outfits, others carrying stacks of papers or boxes around. Some of them looked up to see who just walked in, seeing as Mirko didn't normally greet people at the entrance.
"I didn't know you'd be waiting for me in the lobby," Katsuki answered. "I'm not late, am I?"
"You're early, actually," she grinned, slapping him on his back. "Come on, we have a lot to discuss!"
With that she guided him to her office. Well, 'guiding' is a strong term. It was more like a combination of pushing and tugging, but Katsuki didn't mind. Her office was a mess though. Her desk was littered with papers, there was work out equipment lying randomly on the floor and inspirational posters decorated the wall. It reminded him of Eijirou's room in a weird way and he didn't know how to feel about that.
"Take a seat, make yourself at home," Mirko smiled, walking over some weights to get to her chair. "Eraserhead told me about this Jikan group he's been investigating, apparently they want to build some kind of time machine."
"Rewind machine," Katsuki corrected her as he sat down on one of the other chairs.
"I see you've been briefed already. That's normally my job, you know, as your mentor during your work study," Mirko shrugged. "Doesn't matter! It just means we can get right into it!"
"...You haven't read my personal files, have you?" Katsuki asked, already taking out the backup copy had prepared for this exact occasion.
"Huh? Oh, no, I already got all your information from the previous internship," Mirko told him, frowning when he handed her another copy.
"Please read it again," Katsuki said. "I'll go change into my hero costume in the meantime."
"Oi, I'm the one in charge here kiddo, don't forget that," Mirko said. She wasn't smiling anymore, but she did open the file so Katsuki figured he hadn't crossed the line yet. He was sure she'd understand once she was filled in on everything. And so Katsuki left her office to go to the changing rooms. By the time he got back, Mirko was reading his file with her feet up on her desk, grinning at her intern as he entered.
"Well, if this isn't interesting~ You sure are something else, sparky!" she laughed. "The future huh? So that's why Eraserhead was so concerned about some drawings of a time machine!"
"Rewind machine," Katsuki grunted, for the second time that day. "But yeah, Jikan is no joke. If they get their memories back-"
"Yeah, yeah, dangerous stuff, I get it," Mirko said, waving off Katsuki's concern. "What? Don't tell me you're too chicken to face them!"
"What? Hell no!"
"That's the spirit!" she laughed, slapping the file down on the table while she got up. "Come on, we have a lot of ground to cover if we wanna check it all out!"
Now that's why Katsuki liked her. They were on patrol not even five minutes later, jumping across rooftops as Katsuki filled her in on the details of Jikan's operations. It was clear that Mirko hadn't been able to read all the information Eraserhead had sent her. She'd never been too keen on paperwork, so Katsuki wasn't that surprised. But paperwork was a part of the job and a hero in the top ten should really set a better example...
They stopped on a rooftop, higher up than most of the buildings in the surrounding area. It was also too tall to get a good view of the streets below and the descent made it hard to be quick on the scene.
"Why are we stopping here?" Katsuki asked. "The first hideout is still four blocks away."
"I know," Mirko stated. "That's why we're meeting up with someone here. You can't group up with other heroes on the villain's doorstep kid, it'd be a dead giveaway! Oh, right, I don't really need to mentor you, do I?"
"We're meeting up with someone?" Katsuki asked, frowning. Why hadn't she told him about that? Eraserhead hadn't mentioned other heroes in this area knowing about their operation and Mirko wasn't allowed to bring in outsiders without his explicit consent. "Who? Another hero?"
"He's in on the whole thing too, or so I've been told," she shrugged. "His sidekicks aren't, though, so know when to shut your trap."
Katsuki rolled his eyes. If anyone needed to be told to shut up before spilling their secret it was Mirko. She had a tendency to just say what was on her mind, after all. But then again, so did he... He sighed. They're really a lot alike, aren't they..? Before Katsuki could ask who they were meeting exactly, since she hadn't answered that question before, someone else landed on top of the building. Katsuki's eyes widened a bit at the sight, cringing when the familiar black bird was dropped onto the roof with little to no warning before Hawks had even landed properly.
"Mirko! It's been too long!" Hawks greeted the other pro hero, going in for a hug. "How've you been? Taking in interns now huh? Thought that wasn't your style?"
"Shut up, birdbrain!" Mirko grinned, yet still returning the hug. "At least I don't only select rabbits and bunnies, unlike some other animal I know."
"You're just jealous," Hawks pointed out before looking at Katsuki. "So you must be Dynamight, right? Tsukuyomi has told me lots about you!"
Katsuki hated the breach of personal space, but allowed Hawks to embrace him nonetheless, not wanting to make a fuss about it since it was the first time he was officially meeting him. At least in this timeline.
"I've heard about your situation," the pro hero whispered, not beating around the bush. "I've also heard that Tokoyami-kun might be next in line, so it's your job to keep an eye on him, understand?"
"Yeah, nice to meet you too," Katsuki grumbled, pushing him off. Izuku had already told them his next prediction. Tokoyami was supposed to be the next to regain his memories, if the green head's theory was correct. Katsuki just didn't expect to be the one to supervise him during that time. Seems like Deku isn't the only one who needs a fucking lesson in communication.
"Let's all get along, okay?" Hawks smiled, pushing Tokoyami forward now that he was standing on his feet again. "Mirko, meet my new intern! Together we're a full bird, how cool is that?"
"Pfft-!" Mirko let out, slapping a hand over her mouth, trying to recompose herself before giving a decent answer. "Oh yeah? Well my new intern matches my personality, how bout that, birdbrain!"
Were they really trying to one-up each other right now..? Katsuki rolled his eyes, tuning out their conversation. Instead, he made eye contact with his classmate, who simply shrugged. There was nothing they could do to stop their mentors from bickering right now, they just had to accept reality. They ended up standing on the sidelines as the two pro's continued their useless banter. So this was how his interns felt when he ran into a Bakusquad member on patrol huh..?
"Seems like we'll be working together for a while," Katsuki sighed, trying to break the silence between them.
"Seems like it," Tokoyami nodded, dark shadow peeking out from underneath his cape. Katsuki gave the quirk manifestation a small smile and a pet on the head, knowing they liked that. It flustered Tokoyami, which was an added bonus, but he was quickly able to recompose himself. "Let's do our best."
"Yeah," Katsuki snorted, looking back at Mirko, who was holding Hawks in a headlock as the bird hero yammered and whined while the rabbit woman threatened to break his neck. They truly had a unique friendship...
