Shadow awoke in the middle of the night. He opened his eyes but didn't move a muscle as he remembered Sonic in his arms. He was murmuring incoherently in his sleep, flicking an ear softly. He snuggled up closer to Shadow and he let out a soft purr. Shadow smiled and closed his eyes, attempting to fall back asleep.

In the morning Shadow woke to Sonic shifting around, yawning cutely before opening his emerald eyes. "Morning Shadow..." He murmured quietly, eyes heavy with sleep.

"Good morning Sonic." Ebony replied. Sonic sat up, stretching his stiff limbs. "Would you like to go for a walk? Alice said you'd be able to walk today."

"I-I guess.." He made no move to get up though, and he flinched as the door opened, whimpering as he saw Alice.

"It's alright Sonic, it's only me." She cooed. She had a glass of water in one hand and something else in the other. She held her hand out to Sonic and she had a single pill in it, a painkiller. "Sonic, can you-"

The azure hedgehog jumped up, scaring the bejeezus out of Shadow and Sonic fell of the side of the bed. "No!" Sonic shrieked, backing up against the wall. "G-Get away from me!!"

Shadow's ears fell. "Put that away for a second." he said to Alice, who nodded and slipped it into her pocket. He jumped down and knelt beside the hyper ventilating hedgehog. "Sonic, it's just a-"

"No! I won't take it!!" He screamed, his eyes welling up with tears.

"Sonic, look at me." He glanced up at Shadow with fear in his eyes. "It's only a painkiller,, it blocks the pain, it's not poison."

"Don't make me take it Shadow..." He whimpered, holding onto him. I couldn't force him to take it, he was terrified.

"Alright, you don't have to." Shadow sighed, helping Sonic stand up. Alice nodded in understanding and walked out of the room.

"Come on, let's go on our walk." The dark hedgehog said, walking out of the room. Sonic followed closely behind, holding onto his arm tightly, like he feared for his life. And in a way, he did, jumping at every sound he heard.

Shadow and him walked outside and Sonic squinted at the sunlight. The sun shined on their fur, warming them up on this lovely summer day. "Sonic, I need to talk to you for a moment." Shadow said as they entered a lush forest.

"Wh-what is it?" Sonic asked, looking up at the other male as they sat down on a log in a clearing.

"I know you're scared... and scarred... but we won't hurt you Sonic. You're absolutely terrified of a pain killer... I just want you to know we're not going to hurt you."

Sonic sighed, "I'm sorry Shadow..."

"There's nothing for you to be sorry for. I just want you to know we'll keep you safe."

Sonic leaned on him a little. "You will?" He said quietly, gazing up at him.

"Of course I will." Shadow replied, tensing up a little as he was leaned on my the blue hedgehog. But he soon relaxed as Sonic began to purr. "Thank you Shadow.." He said quietly.

"It's nothing.." He replied.

Sonic wrapped his arms around him and rested his head on his fluffy chest. Shadow felt a blush creep across his cheeks and he looked away from him to hide it.

"Shadow.. a-are you blushing?" Sonic asked.

"N-No! I don't blush..." Shadow stuttered. Sonic giggled and put his hand under his chin and turned his head so face him.

"You are blushing!" Sonic said, smiling.

"Yeah, so?" Shadow said, jerking his head away.

Sonic let out a soft laugh. "You're cute when you blush.." He said softly.

Whether it was meant for Shadow to hear it or Sonic was saying it to himself, Shadow heard and pricked his ears as his cheeks went a darker shade. "Y-You think I'm... cute?" He asked.

"What? N-No! I didn't say that..." The blue hedgehog stuttered, his face flushing red in embarrassment.

Shadow leaned forward until their noses were touching, and Sonic stared into his crimson eyes. "I know you're lying Sonic.. I hear you." Shadow smirked. Sonic looked down and away from him, his ears softly folding back. "I don't think you're cute... it's just that..."

Shadow flicked his right ear. "It's just what, Sonic?" He asked, one of his hands on the azure hedgehog's cheek.

"You wouldn't understand." Sonic whimpered, turning and facing away from him.

"Please Sonic... tell me."

"Fine..." He faced the black hedgehog again, though he refused to make eye contact. He said something very fast and inaudible.

"Come again?" Shadow said, his ears pricked.

"I said... I said I really like you.." Sonic shielded his face, bracing himself for Shadow to smack him.

But he didn't.

What surprised him even more than that was the soft pair of lips that met his in a passionate kiss.
