Chapter 7 - Gems

"Thank God it's Friday!" Beth exclaimed as I walk into the office kitchen. I laugh, "Yes, TGIF, indeed!" Upon returning to my desk, I notice a few co-workers gathering in one of the paralegal's office across from my desk. They are chattering in hushed voices, but I can tell the conversation is emotionally charged. Guess this would be the morning gossip gang. One of the girls sees me watching them, so she shuts the door and proceeds to shut all three sets of blinds. Good riddance. Fine. Keep that drama enclosed. That's what I prefer. Ha! I feel a smile growing across my face. Universe, do what you do best. No longer do I worry about the office drama. It's a waste of my time, energy, and brain power. Universe provide me with the tools I need to achieve the goals I'm working so very hard towards. That's all I can ask...I turn on my music, put my earbuds in, and refrain from engaging in any negative discussions the remainder of the day.

"Is it time to go home yet?" Peggy jokes. I take an earbud out and glance at the computer clock, "Nope, another 24 minutes!" Wow, you did good today, Eve. How wonderful it feels to not get caught struggling in the web of rumors and back-stabbing. Let's stay on this path from now on, it's a pleasant one. I take my other earbud out and finish my scanning and copying tasks for the day.

On the way home, I congratulate myself again on my amazing progress. Look at you go! I pull into the driveway, turn off the car, and head inside. Sam is playing with Kyzon in the living room. "There's your mommy, Kyzon!" Sam coos to the cat. I smile, "Yes baby, mommy's home!" I hang up my coat and give Sam a kiss. "What do you want to do tonight, my love?" Sam replies, "Whatever makes you happy." "Hmm.." I begin, "I'm in the mood to go dancing! Let's do a happy hour and then go dancing!" Sam smiles, "Okay, let's do it!" I change my shoes, brush my hair, and we head off towards one of our favorite upscale bars.

When we arrive, we find seats at the bar. We take our coats off, and order our first round of drinks. "Would you like a menu?" the bartender asks. "Um" I respond, "yes, sure, thanks!" I glance over the menu with Sam. "What sounds good to you babe?" I ask Sam. "Hmm...the stuffed mushrooms...the spinach artichoke dip.." "Okay," I agree, "Let's order those two, they are on the happy hour special, so that's even better!" I place an order for those two appetizers, and then Sam and I get lost in deep conversation about our goals, ambitions, and reflections of recent and not-so-recent events. This is one of the many reasons why I love this man. We think so much alike, we are different because we do not follow the herd - and never will. He makes me so happy. I smile at Sam. He orders us another round of drinks as our food arrives, and then turns back to me, smiles, and holds my hand. If only I could make these little moments last. "So," Sam says, "Where do you want to go dancing?" I hem and haw over a couple of my favorite dancing scenes and then reply, "Gems!" Sam smiles, "Then Gems it is!" After another 20 minutes, we pay the tab, and head to Gems.

Gems is a gay club I've frequented many times, since several of my friends are gay, as well as my baby brother, Johnathan. I prefer dancing at some of the gay establishments over predominately straight ones - specifically because guys constantly try to pick girls up at the straight clubs. At the gay clubs, occasionally I get hit on, but no one aggressively pursues me. It's comforting. I can blend in. Plus, gay men love Sam's facial hair and sometimes even buy him drinks. When we arrive, the club only has a dozen or so people present. We sit at the bar and order another round of drinks.

Slowly, the club begins to fill up. "Eve!!" I hear a female voice shout. I turn around to see Lola, a longtime friend that I rarely see these days. "I thought that was you! How are you doing? I haven't seen you or Sam in a while. Damn you look good! Whatever you're doing, keep it up!" I laugh, "Thanks, Lola! Well if you didn't work so many weird hours, maybe I'd see your beautiful face more often." I elbow her jokingly. "So, what are you two drinking?" Lola asks. We tell her our drinks and she orders another round, "On me!" she says, "So what brings you two out tonight?" "Oh you know, I love my dancing and haven't been dancing in a while, so...here we are!" I laugh. I realize I'm now shouting because the music has been turned up and the lights turned down. "Well are we going to dance or what?" Lola asks me. I turn to Sam, "Want to find a side table to set our stuff down?" Sam nods in agreement. We move our coats and my purse to a side table. Sam says he just wants to sit and watch the crowd for a while, so Lola and I head to the dance floor.

Popular pop songs and electronica dance music blares, lights flicker, strobe, and change colors, and I lose myself in the rhythm and in the lights. Lola is one of my few friends that can keep up with me when I'm in dance mode. Most others dance for a few songs, then stop. Not Lola. Lola's deep red hair, fair skin, and bright red lipstick look fabulous in the lights. If I were a lesbian, I'm sure I'd try to date Lola. She's cute, snarky, and adventurous. "Work it, Eve!" Lola laughs at my spur-of-the-moment dance moves. "Hey, you want another of the same?" she motions to the drink in my hand. "Yeah, sure, one more won't hurt!" Lola is quickly swallowed up by the mass of people on the dance floor as she makes her way to the bar. I lose myself in the music once again, various people stepping in to dance with me, others breaking out well-rehearsed dance moves nearby. This is freedom. This is allowing things to be - no agenda pushing, no ego involvement. "Here you go dah'ling!" Lola hands me a drink. "Thank you! I owe you next time - just remind me, please!" Lola laughs and shakes her head, "Nope, don't worry about it." We dance some more. At this point, there are so many people on the floor and the bass is turned up so loud that the floor feels like it's vibrating.

Eventually, we make our way back to Sam. He's chatting with a few people at the table next to him. "Are you having a good time?" I ask Sam. "Yes, absolutely, are you?" "Oh yes! But I'm done drinking for the night, probably could go soon." "Okay," Sam nods, "Yeah I finished my last beer a while ago, just finishing up this cup of water, then we can go?" I nod my head in agreement. "Lola, we're about to go, come here!" I motion with my arms, and she embraces me with a hug. "It was good to see you Eve, we need to hang out more often, even if it's here." "I know, life just got in the way, I'm going to try to make hanging out with friends more of a priority in the new year." She smiles, then quips, "Well since you two are peacin' out, guess I will also. I was hoping to meet a girl here tonight, but she hasn't responded to my texts." I frown and pat her on the shoulder, "Her loss, dude." "Yeah.." Lola says as she stares at the dance floor. "Ready?" Sam asks. "Yup, let's go." The three of us head out, and back to our homes.

"Good morning, Sleeping Beauty." I turn over, rub my eyes, and see Sam standing next to the bed. He rubs my arm, "Did you have a good night's sleep?" "Mmmhmm," I say, still halfway asleep. "Well, it is already a little after 11, are you hungry?" Sam asks. "Yeah, I will be. Wait, did you say 11?" I sit up, look at the clock, and rub my neck. "Sure did" Sam says with a laugh, "You were out cold. All that dancing must have worn you out." I sigh, "Yeah, that's what happens when I go all out on a rare occasion, but it was fun, definitely worth it..."

I head into the kitchen where Sam is making vegetable omelets. "Smells fantastic, Sam." I say as I walk into the bathroom. "That's because it is!" he chuckles. I brush my teeth and watch him as he puts on a show. He flips the omelet in the air, throws the spatula in the air, catches both, then takes a bow. I laugh.

He puts the omelets on plates, then puts the plates on the table. He has a pot of tea going. I finish brushing my teeth, and sit down to enjoy breakfast with him. "Thank you" I say to Sam. "Absolutely, my wonderful wife." "So," I ask Sam, "What is on your agenda for today and tomorrow? Working primarily in the shop?" Sam nods as he finishes chewing, "Yup." "Good, I'll work on meditating, cleaning, and working on stuff for your business - we need to do another email blast to potential clients on the west side of town. I already have the email addresses ready to go, just need to create an updated template for the body of the email.." I look at Sam and take another bite, "Very good, babe." Sam smiles, "Thank you. Looks like we both have plenty to do to keep us busy this weekend." "Yup." I nod my head in agreement.
