"I'm so excited to see Grandma."

"Me, too."

"Do you think she'll love my gift?"

"I still feel awkward looking at it but I'm pretty sure my grandmother will like it a lot."

"I'm jealous... Should've gotten a copy myself."

"You always see me. Why need a huge painting of my face?"

"For scientific purposes, Baekhyun. You'll never know."

"Don't do it."

"I'll hang it in my room and kiss it every morning."

As Chanyeol sits in the passenger seat, anticipation hangs in his chest while Baekhyun calmly drives beside him. The scene outside the car window unfolds like a movie with the countryside stretching out before them. The sun is brightly shining in the sky, casting its glow on the landscapes as the two of them set off on the road leading back to Baekhyun's hometown. Chanyeol can't help feeling emotional and happy. This feeling is priceless.

"Are we there yet?" He asks, earning a smile and a nod from Baekhyun. The birthday presents for Grandma Byun are nicely sitting in the backseat together with the rest of their stuff.

"Has it been 2 years already?"

"Yeah, more or less. I couldn't visit because of covid back then," Baekhyun answers.

"I met up with your brother though, during the pandemic. It was just one time. We went out for drinks."

"Oh, you did? You didn't mention this to me before."

"I thought you knew?"

Baekhyun swerves the steering wheel, looking at Chanyeol through the rearview mirror.

"Maybe? I already forgot. Hehe."

"You met up with my sister too, right? I think it was also around lockdown."

"Huh? When was that?"

"You already forgot? You told it to me before. Remember? At Galeria?"

"Oh! Right, right. Hyung was there, too."

"Her husband?"

"Yeah, I remember now. They were shopping for furniture at that time. Noona paid for the clothes I picked... Wait, it was actually this jacket I'm wearing right now. Your sister bought this for me!"

"Hahaha! No, like seriously?"

As they pass through each familiar landmark, Chanyeol's memories surge forth. The old sturdy tree, the beautiful riverbank, the cheap ramen house, the playground where children in the neighborhood used to play, the park where Baekhyun rode his bicycle, and the street on the way to school. They all hold treasured childhood memories dear to Chanyeol's heart.

The car slows down as they approach the block to Byun's residence. Flashbacks flood Chanyeol's mind, reminiscing waves of laughter and moments he shared with Baekhyun in this place when they were 18. Mixed feelings of excitement and nostalgia overcome him as the streets become narrower. It's not until a few meters away that they finally turn onto Byun's convenience store, just across from Baekhyun's family house.

"We're home, Chanyeol."

This is where everything started.

"Yeah. We are."

Baekhyun pulls into the driveway, the engine stopping to mark the end of their journey. Chanyeol sits in silence for a moment, absorbing the beauty of his surroundings. The front door of Baekhyun's house is already opened outside, inviting him to come in with open arms. Taking a deep breath, he steps out of the car and embraces the warmth that welcomes him back to the place he calls home.

Baekhyun nudges him and grins, showing his palm.

"Wanna hold hands?"

Chanyeol low-fives him instead, laughing it off.

"You're crazy."

He gathers their things from the trunk before walking ahead first and telling Baekhyun to hurry up.

"I'm serious, though," Baekhyun shrugs, running after Chanyeol and teasing the man by sticking next to him. "Come on, baby. Let's just hold hands while walking. Hm?"

"Will you stop being silly?"

"Will you grant my request, then?"

"Pfft. Later."

"When is later?"

Baekhyun's main family consists of seven members: Grandma Byun, Baekhyun's Dad, Baekhyun's Mom, Baekbeom, Seohee (sister-in-law), Siwoo (nephew), and Seoyul (niece), the baby. All of them are present in the garden where the birthday party is held, celebrating with other close relatives, friends, and neighbors. There are about thirty people including the kids who are eating, drinking, laughing, talking, and interacting with one another. Meanwhile, Grandma Byun has her own chair at the center of the garden. She is wearing a red Hanbok for her birthday, elegantly sitting like a Queen as the star of the day that she is.

Upon Baekhyun's arrival, the attention is geared towards him. The bustle gets louder when his relatives recognize the handsome, young man entering the party.

Of course, it is Baekhyun's Mom who excitedly greets him first. She embraces him tightly followed by his Dad, patting Baekhyun on the back. Some of Baekhyun's younger cousins surround and cling to him as well. And then comes Baekbeom after a short while, welcoming his adorable little brother by head-locking him and ruffling his hair. The smile on Baekhyun's face grows big and bright. He's a bit teary-eyed, too.

After the sweet chaos, Baekhyun then approaches his awaiting grandmother and hugs her. Happy Birthday, Grandma, he whispers, clasping her veiny hands and pressing them against his cheeks. Grandma Byun laughs and lets out her deepest 'Aigoooo, my baby is here!' while cooing at Baekhyun, her most precious child, her dearest, favorite grandson.

As Chanyeol stands on the side and watches behind the scene, his chest swells with utmost joy. The tiny fear and anxiety lurking inside of him are now being washed away by Baekhyun's genuine smile. Witnessing Baekhyun reuniting with his family is indeed heartwarming.

He could cry right here, right now, if not only for Baekhyun's awkward and funny expressions while trying to carry the baby in his arms. The sight is making Chanyeol giggle. Baekhyun's sister-in-law is urging Baekhyun to hold the baby more comfortably, but the man ends up swaying Seoyul like he's a robot.

"Hey. You came."

Chanyeol jolts, startled by the voice emerging beside him. Baekhyun's brother grins, offering a drink which Chanyeol accepts with a polite bow.

"Have a seat, Chanyeol."

"Thank you."

Knees squeezed together with his back straight, Chanyeol sits on the chair and glances at Baekhyun chatting with his parents about something. Their gazes meet, and Baekhyun's eyes widen as if he has just remembered that he has to show Chanyeol around. Like they're having some sort of telepathy, Chanyeol shakes his head and assures him that Baekhyun doesn't have to. They can just be with each other when there are lesser guests around the house.

Just stay right where you are, Baek. I'm fine.

You sure?

Yup. Let's just talk later.

Okay, wait for me.

Taking a deep breath, Chanyeol goes back to facing Baekbeom and drinking his liquor. It's just light beer but it feels rough in his throat. Now this seems like deja vu. This already happened before, right?

"Hard drive?" Baekbeom asks to begin their small talk.

"Not really. We left Seoul early in the morning so there wasn't much traffic on the way," Chanyeol answers.

"I see. Have you greeted Grandma? I don't think she saw you come in."

"Not yet. I'm still waiting for Baekhyun to be done then I'll go greet her with him."

"Alright, suit yourself."

"Don't wanna look like I'm buttering up Grandma. She likes me more than Baekhyun anyway."

"Haha. You little punk."

They exchange a few peals of laughter and conversation, just basically catching up with one another; Baekbeom mentions the car Chanyeol gave him while Chanyeol congratulates him for his second baby. They also talk about Chanyeol's embarrassing childhood memories which they both laugh off now that they are adults. It's all casual and light, not until Baekbeom drops a bomb out of nowhere.

"I heard they broke up."

Five words, and Chanyeol's whole body visibly stiffens. His mouth runs dry as if he doesn't know what to say.

"Oh. You did?"

"Yeah. I just found out recently about it."

"Did Baekhyun tell you just now?"

"Not just now but like, two months ago? I called because of the gaming PC he sent me and then he told me about what happened."

"So he gave you that PC... I thought he sold it off."

"Was it from his ex?" Baekbeom asks.

"Yeah, I guess."

"I remember Baekhyun saying the breakup happened way back so I suppose he's been keeping it a secret for quite some time. I wonder how he was able to hold up."

"You know him, hyung. He's emotionally strong."

"He sure is."

Not that Chanyeol is expecting anything but it really looks like nobody--not even Baekhyun's brother--knows about his relationship with Baekhyun yet. Baekhyun still hasn't told anyone in his family. It should be a good thing for now; both of them are not prepared for anything at the moment. They only agreed upon going home for Grandma's birthday and that's it. He and Baekhyun haven't still discussed coming out and meeting one's parents as lovers yet. Nothing about revealing what's going on between them has been brought up. The time for that will come soon.

"I think it's been almost a year since then. I'm not entirely sure if I remember correctly," Chanyeol explains, "As his closest friend, I wouldn't say I'm surprised but it was really a pity... But probably it was for the best. Maybe they're actually not meant for each other. Baekhyun's too good for her anyway."

"You think so?"

"Yeah. Baekhyun deserves the world."

"The world, huh."

Intrigued, the older lifts a curious brow as he looks at Chanyeol avoiding eye contact with him.

"Say, has Baekhyun been seeing someone else new lately?"

"Huh? W-why do you ask all of a sudden?"

"He sent me this text a few weeks ago right, and he was asking me for some first-date outfit recommendations. That's weird. I mean, he wouldn't text me like that unless he was going on a date."

"Right..."

"So. Is he like, maybe flirting with someone recently? A co-worker or a friend, probably?"

"Not that I know of."

"I'm curious. What was that text for? Was it a failed date, then? As his older brother, I'm just worried he won't be able to find someone again. He's not getting younger anymore."

"What are you saying, hyung? He's just 30."

"And he's still single. Like, who's still single at 30?"

"Well, I am."

"You need to both date, seriously."

Chanyeol coughs.

"W-what did you say?"

Baekbeom shrugs.

"I said, it's about time you guys find someone to get serious with at that age. Your good looks are such a waste if no one's getting them."

"Oh. I thought you said something different. Haha."

Chanyeol is already losing his shit here. He needs to swallow his saliva multiple times not to appear nervous (although he's doing a terrible job.) His palms are sweating. His face is burning hot. This is nerve-wracking. Baekhyun, when are you coming to save me!?

"For real, though. Don't you have any idea if my brother's trying to meet someone again?"

"Why don't you try asking Baekhyun yourself? Maybe he'll tell you if he's in a relationship or not."

"He doesn't share stuff with you?"

"Not really. He's not even telling me his true feelings yet."

"What?"

"Ahem! I mean, he's the private type of guy. Topics like this don't usually come up in our conversations and I don't usually ask him, either. But if he tells me something, I'll be willing to listen. And then I'll give back the same energy if he asks me about my dating life."

What Chanyeol said was technically not a lie. He and Baekhyun used to be like this before so Chanyeol convinces himself that he doesn't need to feel guilty.

"Turns out it didn't really last for a long time, huh?" Baekbeom says.

"What is?"

"You know. That crush."

"Crush?" Chanyeol asks, feigning innocence.

"When you were 18, you said you liked Baekhyun. You still remember that? You even cried when I told you that you can only confess to him when you've already turned 30."

Baekbeom shakes his head, smiling while recalling the memory. It was fun teasing Chanyeol back then.

"So it turns out it was just a phase? You're now 30 and I'm 36. I'm guessing you already forgot about that little promise we had."

"Who says it was just a phase? And who says I already forgot about it?"

Pausing, Chanyeol surprises himself that he was able to say that out loud. Fuck, my mouth!

"You," Baekbeom mutters in shock, pointing an accusing finger at Chanyeol, "You're not saying that you still... Towards my brother... After all this time...?"

"Hey! What are you guys talking about?"

Baekhyun suddenly pops up in the middle of nowhere, interrupting the chatter. Cluelessly, he turns alternately at the two men, trying to read the room but failing to do so.

"Were you two fighting?"

Exhaling to dismiss the subject, Baekbeom slaps his thighs and stands up.

"Well, let's save the rest of our talk later. We're not yet done, you brat. And you," Baekbeom stares at his younger sibling, towering over Baekhyun, "You won't get away with this."

"What, what did I do?" Baekhyun asks, "I just got here!"

As Baekbeom finally walks away, Chanyeol feels like deflating. He clutches on Baekhyun's clothes and pours all his remaining courage into him by hugging his waist.

"Dude. What took you so long? I was scared shitless of your brother. I thought I was gonna piss my pants... Oh, god..."

Baekhyun laughs, sitting beside Chanyeol and wounding his arm around Chanyeol's neck to comfort his sulking boyfriend.

"He was just poking fun at you, I think."

"No, he's not! He's asking so many questions. I was freaking the hell out. What if he finds out about us?"

"And what about it? I was planning on telling my family anyway that I'm dating you."

Chanyeol resurfaces, looking at Baekhyun in disbelief.

"What?"

"I said I'm telling my family about us today."

"We didn't talk about this."

"Now we're talking about it. Why? Don't you want to?"

"It's not like I don't want to... I mean, not right now. It's your grandmother's birthday today. It could ruin everything."

"And why would letting my family know about the person I'm in a relationship with ruin everything?"

Chanyeol falls speechless; Baekhyun sighs.

"Fine, I'm not telling them about us if that's what you're worried about. I'm just telling Grandma. Just her for now. I want her, at least my precious grandmother, to know that someone is making me happy."

Baekhyun reaches for Chanyeol's face, cupping his ears and casually flopping them to lighten up the mood.

"And that's you, baby. My special someone. My happy virus."

The party noise seems to blend out into thin air as Chanyeol gapes at Baekhyun in a silent daze. Time stands still as he admires the person in front of him like he always does.

"Grandma is the only person who will never judge us. I just know it deep in my heart," Baekhyun says.

"You think so?"

"Yep. By the way, what the hell's with these ears, seriously? They're too big. Makes me wanna play with them all day."

Chanyeol sniffles, holding back a tear.

Damn it... How could I say no to you when you're looking at me with those eyes, Baekhyun? If only you know how I badly wanna tell the world about you. About us.

"Just Grandma for now?"

"Uh-huh. Just her. For now."

"How about Baekbeom hyung?"

Baekhyun slaps the air, shaking his head.

"My brother? Nah. Maybe next time when I'm finally ready. I still need tons of courage to do that."

Chanyeol snorts, smiling smugly.

"So it's not just me who's scared of him, huh?"

"Who says I'm scared of Byun Baekbeom!? I'm not scared of him."

"You are."

"So. It's okay with you if I tell Grandma you're my boyfriend, right?"

"Well. I mean... If... if you want to?"

Baekhyun smirks, elbowing Chanyeol.

"Look at you! Why are you suddenly smiling so wide?"

"Huh? I'm not smiling, you stupid. This is my natural face."

"Says the one who's blushing right now~"

"The fuck? Why would I blush?"

"You look so cute when you blush, Chanyeol."

"Will you stop teasing me? You're so annoying."

"Wel ye stef teasing meeh. Yer sew enneying, my ass! Hahaha!"

"I'm seriously gonna hit you for real, Byun Baekhyun."

Relatives and guests are gradually leaving one by one by the afternoon comes. The simple birthday party for Grandma Byun is a wrap. Chanyeol helps clean up the house and even volunteers to drive Baekhyun's drunk uncles home. When the sun sets, he is invited by Baekhyun's father to go fishing with him and Baekbeom, and as much as Baekhyun wants to come with them too, he opts to stay home with the girls. He knows his Mom has a lot to say to him about his ex. Even though Baekhyun hates to listen to it, it's obviously inevitable. He has no way out of this. He just has to face it straightforwardly.

"Tell me honestly, son. Did you two break up or what? Come on, sweetie. I'm not gonna get mad if you tell me the truth."

"Mom, I don't wanna talk about it..."

"So you already ended it?"

Baekhyun nods, having no energy to deny it anymore.

"Are you serious? You've been together for a long time. Why end it now?"

"It's just... I don't love that person anymore."

"That person? Oh, my god, Baekhyun... You're just gonna easily throw away all those years?"

"Who says it was easy? It was hard for me, too. I know you're disappointed in me but please let's not bring it up anymore."

"You should've told me about this sooner. I would've understood."

"No, you wouldn't."

"Well. I would still try."

Baekhyun sighs in surrender, wishing he could just disappear right now and end this talk already.

"I'm sorry, Mom... I didn't know how to tell you."

"I cannot believe this... How long has it been since then?"

Grandma Byun senses that Baekhyun has no plans of continuing this discussion with his mother anymore, let alone sit in the living room with all of them present and listening. Siwoo is playing games on Baekhyun's phone while Baekhyun's sister-in-law is breastfeeding Soyeul. They are probably hearing everything. The stressed-out look on Baekhyun's face is enough reason for the elderly to butt in.

"Give him a break, dear. Can't you see that your son is already tired? Baekhyun, don't mind your mother. She's being annoying as usual."

Baekhyun bites his bottom lip to contain his smile. Stroking their dog's tummy, Mongryeong, reminds him of the old days. Their pet corgi clearly misses him as it won't even leave his side.

"Ma, if you keep on spoiling that son of mine, he's not gonna get married."

"So what? Baekhyun can stay single all he wants. My boy's still young. He's still a baby!"

"Please, Mother. Baekhyun's not a child anymore. He's an adult!"

"An adult who already knows what he's doing. Am I right?"

"Except for bringing me a daughter-in-law? Yes."

"Oh, come on! Baekbeom's wife is already enough of a daughter-in-law for now! Can't you see that our Seohee right here is the best in the world?"

Baekhyun and his sister-in-law, Seohee, share a look before breaking into a chuckle. The mother and daughter keep bickering in front of the TV, distracting Baekhyun away.

"Was it fun, Siwoo?"

"Yeah. I'm always winning."

Baekhyun peers over his nephew's shoulder, playing the game Baekhyun created himself. Siwoo's old enough to be playing LOVE, right? He's not in Kindergarten anymore. Time sure flies fast.

"Look, Uncle. This is my favorite game character. The knight!"

The persistent tug on his sleeve makes Baekhyun move on the couch. Siwoo is pointing at the character on the screen, a dude in 3D wearing a red cape and holding a modern sword.

"You don't like the fire dragon?"

"I like the fire dragon but the knight's cooler. Dad says he looks a bit like you."

"Like me?"

"Uh-huh. You have the same height."

Baekhyun is about to hit his brother's child but then he hears one thing.

"And you're both handsome," Siwoo adds.

"Pfft. Yeah, I'll take that."

Noticing his grandmother standing up from her rocking chair, Baekhyun immediately comes to assist her by holding her hand and helping her stand. Grandma Byun smiles and thanks him, her eyes crinkling in such a way that tells Baekhyun how old she actually is. Her hand seems to be smaller and wrinklier than the last time Baekhyun remembers. Because he's been away from home for quite a while, he seems to forget that his Grandma is aging like a normal human being, too. She also gets old just like how he gets older over time.

"Come with me, Baekhyun. I have something to give you."

Sitting on the floor of Grandma Byun's spacious room, Baekhyun patiently waits for the elder to finish rummaging through her dresser. The air smells like freshly baked cookies and flowers. It reminds him of his childhood. As he wanders his eyes around, he catches a glimpse of his grandfather's picture sitting in the corner of the room. It makes him smile. Somewhere in heaven, he must be watching over them.

"What is this, Grandma?"

"It's for you, sweetie. Take it."

With two hands, Baekhyun hesitantly accepts his grandmother's gift, an old red booklet. It's a bankbook. It has money deposited under his name.

"From what I've heard, seems like that future won't be happening anymore, hm?"

Baekhyun is in a state of shock. His fingers are quivering as he looks at Grandma's kind and loving face.

"Do whatever you want with it. Travel abroad. Get a nice house in Seoul. Treat yourself to delicious food. If you want, you could also buy that thing you always play games with... What do you call that again, my boy? Ah, a computer! Yes, that one. Get yourself the most expensive brand."

Words are trapped in Baekhyun's throat as he stays wordless, repeatedly reading his grandma's handwriting on the bankbook. "My grandson's congratulatory money for his wedding," it says. To think that his grandmother saved this money without him knowing all this time. He might tear up right now.

"Grandma."

"Yes, dear?" Grandma Byun asks, her eyes filled with expectation. "Was it not enough to buy a computer?"

Taking the elderly's hands, Baekhyun slowly shakes his head and curtly returns the booklet.

"I'm sorry but I'm gonna have to decline this, Grandma."

"Why? Is it burdensome?"

"Nope. You should personally give it to me on the day of my wedding. Not now."

The baffled and crestfallen expression on the old woman's beautiful eyes is replaced by a glimmer of hope and interest.

"Oh. What does that mean?"

Baekhyun answers by scooting closer to her, plopping on the floor, and resting his head on his grandmother's lap just like the old times.

"Grandma..."

"Hmm?" She asks with a soft laugh, finding it amusing that Baekhyun hasn't changed one bit. She strokes Baekhyun's hair while looking down at the sweet boy cuddled on her lap. "Are you going to tell me a secret?"

"Yes. You're the only person I'm saying this to."

"Really? How exciting."

"Actually, I..."

"What is it?"

"How do I say it... Uhm."

"Just tell it to me, son. I'm all ears."

"Well. It's about my..."

"Okay?"

Suddenly feeling embarrassed, Baekhyun covers his face and turns away.

"Ah! Forget it! Nevermind."

Annoyed, Grandma Byun slaps him on the arm.

"Good grief, this rude brat! Are you going to say it or not?"

"Ouch, why did you hit me!"

"You're being an annoying little bitch, you punk. Just say what it is! This old woman doesn't have all the time in the world!"

Traumatized and scared, Baekhyun cowers in fear. Her temper is really crazy. Where is that adorable woman who was about to give him a huge amount of money?

"I'm dating someone right now," Baekhyun confesses. "There's this person by my side who's making me happy."

Grandma Byun falls silent, her temporary sour mood instantly changing into a calm one. Baekhyun gets up, shyly rubbing his arm. The smile on his lips indicates that he's glad, though.

"What I'm saying is you don't have to worry about me, Grandma. I'm with someone I really like and we're taking things seriously."

Peeking at his grandmother's facial expression, Baekhyun waits for her response.

"Is that so?" The elderly mutters after a while, relief washing over her. Squeezing Baekhyun's cheek, she smiles proudly. "Thank god, you're not lonely anymore."

Lonely anymore. That hits hard. Baekhyun remembers telling his Grandma during a phone call way back how lonely he was living alone in an apartment in Seoul. She must be talking about it.

"You're not gonna ask who it is?" Baekhyun says, "Aren't you curious about the person I'm going out with?"

"Of course, I'm curious. But if my grandson wants to keep his love life private, I will surely respect that."

Smiling, Baekhyun purses his lips together and nods.

"Okay, then."

Few seconds of silence are shared between them as no one dares to speak. Grandma Byun clears her throat.

"So... Is that girl nice? Is she pretty? How old is she? Where did she come from? How did you two meet? Is she a friend from work, perhaps? What does her parents do? How long have you been seeing each other? Does she know how to cook? Is she taking care of you well? Now show me a picture. I want to know what she looks like."

"Well, that's the thing, Grandma..."

Baekhyun nervously laughs. He takes a breath of courage before he says:

"It's not a she."

Concern but mostly confusion describes Grandma Byun's reaction. It's evident that she is trying her best to understand what Baekhyun means. Clasping both of the elderly's hands, Baekhyun continues further:

"It's a he. I'm in a relationship with a man."

Wide-eyed, she pauses for a moment, processing the unexpected news while looking at her grandson in awe. She is surprised, to say the least. She is bewildered. She is stunned. Never in her 84 years of existence she had ever expected to hear something like this, let alone from Baekhyun. This is very new to her.

"But it's not just some man," Baekhyun breaks into a sincere, warm smile, "It's a man very close to me. A man who's very special to me. A man I know very well. A man I treasure a lot."

"Oh, god..."

Grandma Byun falls speechless; Her fingers are trembling as she covers her face with her palms, letting out a deep exhale. Her heart is filled with mixed emotions. Baekhyun embraces her, soothing her hunched back to comfort her.

"It's someone who's been there for me since day one, Grandma. Someone who watched me grow. Someone who stayed by my side through ups and downs. Someone who cared about me more than he cared about himself," Baekhyun whispers while hugging his dearest family, "He's a person who looks after me all the time, a person who loves me very much, and a person whom I love from the bottom of my heart."

Grandma Byun stares at her grandson's fond and gentle eyes, her gaze turning soft. She can't help crying, tears rolling down her cheeks. The sight is making Baekhyun emotional as well.

"Do you know who it is, Grandma?"

Baekhyun wipes her tears with his thumb.

"It's Chanyeol."

His grandmother starts sobbing.

"It's Chanyeollie, the gentle boy you always worry about if he's eating well. The kind boy who'd always ask you if you'd already taken your meds. The sweet boy whom you said I should cherish with all my life."

"Y-you mean, our Chanyeollie? The one you took home with you today? Park Sungjin's son?"

"Yes. It's Park Chanyeol, my best friend of 12 years. He's now my lover."

Grandma Byun sighs helplessly, her voice shuddering in absolute shock. She's in disbelief. She's speechless.

"Oh, dear..."

"I've realized that my feelings for him are beyond friendship, Grandma... He means the world to me and I'm seeing a future with him. I want to spend the rest of my life with him not only as a friend but as someone more than that."

For a long time, they sit in silence together after that confrontation--Grandma Byun crying and Baekhyun embracing her closely inside his arms. The shoulders that he used to cry on when he was a child are shaking. Now it's her turn to cry on his shoulders which have grown wider than hers.

Was it because of overwhelm? Or was it because of other reasons? Baekhyun can't tell. He's anxious. It's the first time he's seen his grandmother shed tears except for her moments watching dramas on TV. This breaks his heart to the fullest.

"I-I'm so sorry, Grandma," Baekhyun says, his voice cracking in the beginning, "I found myself falling in love with the likes of me. I fell in love with a man despite being a man myself."

He told himself he wouldn't cry. But as soon as he says those words, it's impossible to hold back his sobs. His chest feels tight. His eyes feel heavy. Why did it get blurry all of a sudden? Why are his cheeks suddenly wet with tears?

"You don't need to apologize, my love. You never did anything wrong," his grandmother finally says, "Are you regretting your decision?"

"No. I'm not regretting it one bit, choosing Chanyeol over everything. Do you know what I regret the most?"

Baekhyun smiles sadly, his eyes red and puffy.

"It's realizing my feelings for him this late. I've wasted all those years being oblivious. I couldn't have known; I might have loved Chanyeol since we were eighteen."

Grandma Byun cupping his face and pressing their foreheads together has Baekhyun tearing up even harder. Her tender hushes and playful 'aigooo, look at this crybaby' result in an uncalled chuckle from Baekhyun in the middle of his crying fit.

"So my grandson likes guys now?"

"I'm not really sure, Grandma. Chanyeol is a guy and he's my boyfriend so maybe I'm gay now? Or bi? This is still confusing to me."

"Goodness, gracious... What should we do?"

"Pfft. Haha... I don't know."

"What's a bi, dear?"

They are both crying and laughing at this point and Baekhyun knows this is gonna be embarrassing once it's over. He'll probably cringe to death when he remembers the way he was bawling his eyes out in front of his precious grandmother. But he is grateful nonetheless, that no judgment is heard from her. They're just sitting there trying to console each other until they both calm down.

A soft knock on the door disrupts the moment. Baekhyun's Mom peeks her head in, right away noticing a tense ambiance in the room. She asks what happened and Baekhyun simply says he and Grandma were watching a tear-jerking movie. Buying the excuse, his mother reminds them that dinner will be ready in ten minutes. She says that the boys are already back and they're having a drinking session in the garden.

"They're also playing Go-Stop and asking for you, honey. Come and spend time with your Dad. He misses you already."

"Okay, Mom. I'll be there."

Waiting for his mother to leave, Baekhyun suddenly recalls how his brother hated losing in this game. Baekbeom used to throw the cards on the floor and get angry with him, then teasingly hide his shoes so he couldn't play outside. That big jerk.

"Join them first, sweetie. I'll come out in a bit," Grandma says, stretching her legs, "I still need to change my clothes and freshen up."

Baekhyun almost forgets that she's still wearing her birthday dress. Clinging onto her neck affectionately, he presses a quick kiss on her forehead.

"Happy Birthday, Grandma. Thank you for listening to me. I love you so much."

"I love you more, my sweet boy. Do whatever makes you happy, you hear me? I will always support you no matter what. Love is love, after all. I trust you with all your decisions, and I trust Chanyeol with all my heart. He's a good kid."

Baekhyun's eyes twinkle with joy.

"He sure is."

"What is there to be worried about? Knowing it's Chanyeol who's by your side all this time, I can finally rest in peace."

"Don't talk like that, Grandma..."

"You know I'm just fooling around." Grandma Byun rubs Baekhyun's back and heartily laughs. "Who would have known that you were meant for each other? You two must be soulmates."

"I think so too," Baekhyun says with a proud smile, "Remember. Keep our secret, okay?"

"What do you take me for? My mouth is shut. Before your mother finds out about you and your boyfriend, Chanyeollie, I will have to die first."

"Thank you but you can stop with the references, please."

"Sure. Trust your Granny. Your parents will never know that the boy you were hanging out with as a kid is now going to be their future son-in-law. I'll take this secret to my grave."

"Grandmother!"

"What?"

"Language!"

"Just kidding, just kidding..."

Grandma Byun struggles to stand up by herself so Baekhyun comes to aid her. He even tries to lift her, gaining another hit on his arm as Grandma Byun jokingly tries to shove him away.

"Go now! For pete's sake, this child... Tell your father not to drink too much. I can't stand anymore that grown-ass man snoring in the middle of the night again."

"Okay. We'll wait for you downstairs."

The elderly woman fondly watches Baekhyun skipping away, smiling lovingly at her grandson with his broad back facing her. As soon as the door is closed and Baekhyun is completely out of sight, her smile fades away.

"Oh, good heavens... Since when did our Baekhyunnie get so big?"

*

It's 11 o'clock in the evening and Chanyeol can't sleep.

He's having a hard time concentrating and telling his brain to shut down. If he was with Baekhyun though, he might easily get some rest and fall asleep, but it'll be plain weird to share a room with your best friend as an adult. Baekhyun's family might think it's odd to be staying together in one room so Chanyeol is using the guest room tonight.

Come to think of it. Except for the car ride, he and Baekhyun barely interacted with just the two of them alone, considering it was Grandma Byun's birthday today. It was mentally and emotionally exhausting for Chanyeol. He had to put his guard up the entire time, from the moment Baekbeom talked to him during the party until they went fishing with Baekhyun's father (who stayed clueless throughout). It seemed like Baekbeom was watching his every move, trying to get something out of him by asking so many follow-up questions which Chanyeol struggled to make up answers for.

Oh, and not to mention the super tensed dinner where Grandma Byun coddled him and gave him special treatment while the rest of the Byun family watched. She was excessively feeding him food, and showering him with lots of love and attention. He is forever thankful, but the embarrassment and pressure he felt were too strong.

In retrospect, he might've had an inkling that Baekhyun already told his grandmother about their relationship. The fact that she officially knows that he and Baekhyun are dating feels surreal. It's overwhelming. They're now one step ahead of the future laid out for them.

Grandma Byun hasn't talked to him about this matter but Chanyeol can sense it's gonna happen anytime soon. Probably tomorrow or the day before they head back to Seoul? He should prepare his heartfelt speech now.

"Should I call him?"

Reviewing his phone one more time, he finds his text still left unread. He asked Baekhyun if he was still awake and the man hasn't replied yet. Then again, it's no surprise if Baekhyun already hit the sack. He must be really burned out for today. They could just spend some alone time tomorrow if they got the chance to.

"Fine. I'll just check on him and then I'll go to sleep."

Letting his impulsive thoughts win, Chanyeol springs out of bed and trudges down the hallway leading to Baekhyun's bedroom. The house is borderline silent and a single footstep seems equivalent to a loud stomp on the floorboard. Sneaking out like this feels illegal although it doesn't necessarily have to.

By the time Chanyeol is about to knock on the door, it swings open on its own, revealing the person who's been running through his mind the whole day. Upon seeing each other face-to-face, both of them stand in awe, surprised, as if they were not expecting this kind of situation.

"I was just about to go to you," Baekhyun quietly laughs which Chanyeol responds with Figures, mirroring his shy smile.

They stay on that spot, blocking the narrow door of Baekhyun's room like they have no plans on sitting down or moving somewhere else.

"Haven't you read my text?" Chanyeol asks, leaning against the wall, "I was waiting for your reply."

"Oh. You messaged me?" Baekhyun quickly unlocks his phone and scrolls through it. "I was in the shower so I couldn't check. My bad."

Chanyeol captures Baekhyun's wrist to stop him from fumbling with his phone.

"It's alright, babe. I'm seeing you now, after all."

Baekhyun exhales, staring at the floor and clearing his throat to suppress a blush to come up on his cheeks.

"You're not sleepy yet?" He asks Chanyeol.

"Not yet. That's why I came to see you."

"Did you miss me?"

"No argument here. I always miss you even if we're together."

"Man, that was cheesy."

Chanyeol rubs his nape, laughing sheepishly. He points his thumb behind him.

"Uh, should I go back to my room? You must be tired already."

"Yeah, I am. But seeing your face energizes me."

"Baek, that was kinda smooth..."

"Hahaha. You love it anyway."

"Oh, I do?"

"Mm, you obviously do."

Silence ascends between them as no one talks after that, smiling at each other expressively. Staring right into one another's eyes, no one can deny that this, all of this, feels absolutely different.

They're not in Seoul. They're not alone. Baekhyun's family is here. They don't have work tomorrow. Both the scenery and circumstances are a complete 360 from their daily routine. After all, this is a vacation. A whiff of fresh air. A getaway together.

Sure, there is tension building up right now, but you can never call it discomfort or awkwardness. It's a sense of peace and thrill that can be a little scary. This unexplainable guilt and freedom are what's making them hold back. Because no matter how close they are, Chanyeol can't bring himself to touch Baekhyun's hand. Baekhyun looks like he's waiting and Chanyeol is just hardly breathing.

What could be the reason? It must be the haunting memories. Chanyeol can envision their younger personas in the same room, watching their present selves, and staring at these 30-year-old men acting like they have no clue of what they're doing.

And so Chanyeol bravely dismisses his hesitation; He steps forward, proving he's no longer the same. He closes the gap between his and Baekhyun's bodies before enveloping the smaller man in a comforting hug. Relaxing in Baekhyun's embrace, Chanyeol rests his chin on the other's shoulder and melts, offering his past self a proud, victorious smile.

The figure disappears like thin smoke in the air.

Baekhyun raises his toes and kisses Chanyeol on the cheek, laughing playfully. He strokes the back of Chanyeol's head to congratulate him.

"You did well today, baby. I'm so proud of you."

"Thank you... I'm so proud of you, too."

"You can relax now. I already told Grandma about us."

"Just as I thought. What did she say?"

"Nothing much. She's okay with it. She told me she supports us and she wants us to be happy."

"For real? That's it?"

Chanyeol breaks away from the hug. Baekhyun nods.

"Yup. I'll tell you the details later but what's important right now is we already got her blessing!"

"Ahhhh! Oh, my god!"

Holding hands while screaming in happiness, they do a celebratory dance like the idiots that they are. Chanyeol has such a tall frame to be frolicking and hopping like this but he doesn't care one bit. He's over the clouds glad.

"Oh, shit. We need to be quiet," Baekhyun hushes down after realizing they're being unnecessarily loud, "Seoyul's sleeping. We don't wanna wake her up."

Chanyeol zips his mouth shut.

"Right. Shh."

"By the way. Wanna go out for a walk?"

"At this hour?"

"Yeah. Let's watch the stars at the riverbank. You know, just like the old times?"

"Sure! Thought you wouldn't ask."

"Go grab your coat. I'll sneak out my brother's scooter. He hid the keys somewhere."

"Hey. If we get into trouble, I'm out of this, you hear me?"

"We're grownups, Chanyeol."

"Doesn't mean Baekbeom hyung would easily let us off the hook if he caught us."

"Don't worry, I'll take responsibility."

Sparkling stars adorn the vast sky as the gentle breeze blows over the serene riverbank. Tall trees surround the place while the full moon brightly shines above them. Flowers have started blooming so their sweet scent adds to the magical aura of the night. The water from the river below is calm and cool, and it's making Baekhyun want to dip his toes right in. Honestly, he did not expect that they would be arriving at a beautiful scenery like this. The odds are on him. Everything is perfect.

Splaying down on the grass, Chanyeol allows his carefree spirit to come out like it has been concealed for a long time. He pulls Baekhyun closer, keeping the man next to him so that they can lie side by side watching the stars. Baekhyun takes photos of the night sky; Chanyeol takes photos of Baekhyun taking photos of the night sky.

"I'm posting this on my IG story," Baekhyun says.

"I'm posting you on my IG story," Chanyeol says.

"Don't show my face."

"Alright. I'll just show your beautiful hands~"

Laughing and teasing each other, they are pretty much just talking about random stuff that comes into mind. Reminiscing past memories, they enjoy one another's presence which completes their hearts as a whole.

"Do you remember? We used to come here when we were in high school," Baekhyun says, crossing his legs and hugging his knees close to his chest. "I'd ride my brother's bike and you'd take pictures of the sunset. We'd play your Nintendo and talk about our dreams together."

"You told me you were going to be a Professional Gamer and you wanted me to be your Manager," Chanyeol answers, shaking his head as he recalls. He places his arms under his head, admiring the starry sky above them, "I said being your Manager would be like working for you as an employee. I think I didn't like that so you changed your dream."

"Yup. So from then on, we decided to be Game Creators."

"Let's be partners, you told me. It was like a proposal. And now, look at us. We've become partners."

"Like, actual partners."

"Uh-huh. Partners who work together on the same company, and partners who also kiss behind closed doors."

"Damn, I think I was gaslighted. The second part wasn't in the contract."

Chanyeol laughs, and then he jokes.

"Oh, you want a revision? Wanna file a lawsuit?"

Baekhyun also laughs and shakes his head.

"No, I'll just stick with it. Hahaha. Just give me my money."

Bursting into a chuckle, Chanyeol jabs Baekhyun teasingly (more like, tickles him. He can't even hit him, for heaven's sake) as it makes a soft thudding sound on Baekhyun's chest.

"Hey, a historic event happened here," Baekhyun says, facing Chanyeol. "Guess what it is."

"Didn't have to guess. I already knew it like the back of my hand."

"Enlighten me."

"On White Day 12 years ago, March 14, 2010, at 5:57 pm, we met up here in this exact place. We sat under that tree and you gave me a box of Pepero, the green one. You told me this: Here. It's for you. Happy White Day, Chanyeol~"

Chanyeol has this confident and smug look on his face as he explains and dramatizes everything while Baekhyun listens, trying to hold in his laugh.

"Excuse me? I didn't talk like that!"

"And you knelt on the ground, held my shoulders, and kissed my cheek before looking straight into my eyes... Sorry if this is all I could give you. Someday, I'll give you something so much better. I promise."

Chanyeol sighs dreamily, clutching his heart.

"And my whole world completely comes to a full stop."

And then he glares at Baekhyun.

"Fucking your fault for making little old me fall for you even harder."

"Hahahaha!"

"I thought about that single moment every night for months, babe. Months!"

"Oh, my god! You did?"

"I mean, why would you do that, huh? You confused the hell out of little Chanyeollie. Poor guy... Now come to think of it. That was so gay of you, Baekhyun. You hear me? That was super gay."

Baekhyun smirks. He's enjoying this shit.

"Oh, yeah?"

Massaging his temples, Chanyeol can feel his stress levels rising.

"No, because. Whose straight best friend would do all of that? You even gave me a freaking love letter. What the hell was that, bro? Like, you gave me chocolates. I get it. But you also kissed my cheek? On White Day? YOU KISSED MY CHEEK, GODDAMN IT. That was so unnecessary!"

"I always kiss your cheek. It wasn't something special. And hey, that wasn't a love letter."

"Still, it sounded like a confession. And I refuse to believe you kissed my cheek without ulterior motives."

Waving his hand, Baekhyun dismisses it casually.

"Look, dude. I was just being extra affectionate towards you during that time. Don't think of it too much~"

"Come on. You would never do that to Jongdae."

"You bet I could~"

"Traitor! You said you liked me more than him!"

One moment Chanyeol is gushing over how cute that moment was and then next he's rambling and shouting angrily. Baekhyun is laughing his ass out, having fun teasing his boyfriend.

"Damn it. If only I was in my right mind 12 years ago, I would've already questioned you. What are we?"

"I would've answered you, We're best friends man, what else? And then you'd just get your heart broken a million times..."

"Fuck you, really."

"Stop mulling over the past anymore, okay? What's important is we're now together."

"My anger issues could never. Will you go away for a minute? Don't talk to me. I'm mad at you."

"Okay, suit yourself."

Baekhyun literally leaves, walking away and approaching the tree where the scooter is parked; Chanyeol lowkey follows with his eyes where Baekhyun is going.

Looking through the scooter's compartment, Baekhyun gets something and hides it behind his back.

"You still mad!?" He calls out.

"Not anymore!" Chanyeol answers.

And just like that, they finally made up.

"When I said I'd give you something so much better, I meant this."

Going back to his spot, Baekhyun plops down next to Chanyeol and slowly reveals what he is hiding. Smiling, he hands a blue box wrapped in a blue ribbon to a clueless and confused Chanyeol. Chanyeol is baffled. It's not even his birthday yet so why is Baekhyun giving him a present?

"It's for you. Sorry, it took a while."

"Thanks, but why a gift all of a sudden? I'm feeling anxious about this."

"Can't I give you something anytime I want? It's just a small token. It's not a big deal, I promise."

"Small token for what? This is suspicious. You're not the type to do this!"

"It's just a simple appreciation gift for cleaning my house that day. That's it!"

Skeptical, Chanyeol raises an eyebrow as he inspects the rectangular present. It's a size of a ballpen gift box. It actually looks like a pen gift set on the outside, the one you give to a person who just got promoted in their job. Just like that. Is there an actual pen inside it, though?

"Still, the closest thing you can do to thank me is buy me pizza. What's with the gift and its fancy packaging? This looks expensive. I think it's a bit too much."

"You're the one who's saying too much."

"Can't help it! I'm so nervous."

Feeling guilty and embarrassed for being caught red-handed, Baekhyun plays it cool by brushing off Chanyeol's comments. Why can't just this guy accept his gift properly? Baekhyun is trying his best to look calm and composed here. He's also nervous. If only Chanyeol knew how he's been internally putting his nerves under control right now. If only Chanyeol knew how long he had been planning for this day to happen.

"Do you even want it or not? Fine! I'll just throw it away then-"

"Of course, I want it!"

Excitedly, Chanyeol tugs the ribbon to open the present. Removing the lid, he sees nothing but a piece of folded paper. The box has two compartments which, of course, Chanyeol doesn't know yet: the upper part where the paper is placed, and the bottom part where the real gift is hidden.

"Now that," Baekhyun says about the folded paper inside. "That is a love letter."

Side-eyeing Baekhyun, Chanyeol stares at him judgmentally.

"Are you like, trying to break up with me?"

"No, I'm not! Why are you so pessimistic about this? Just open the damn letter."

"I can't."

"Why not?"

"I think I'll just--pfft--laugh."

"You're insane."

"I mean. Who gives love letters in this day and age? You could've just texted me."

"Are you trying to hurt my feelings? Because you're doing a good job right now."

"Hey, I'm just kidding. You know I'm a sucker for this."

"This is supposed to be a serious and romantic scene, Park Chanyeol. Stop making fun of it. I poured all my heart into writing this letter so the least you can do is read it."

"Yeah, but your handwriting is so ugly. Do you think I will be able to read it?"

"You know what? The first option doesn't seem like a bad idea. Breaking up with you."

"I'd rather have my leg broken."

"What's still good about you if your leg's already broken?"

"I still have my, ahem, hands?"

"For what?"

"For stuff. If you know what I mean."

"Keep your mouth shut, will you?"

"Speaking of the mouth, I also got some skills."

"Rapping skills?"

"That, and skills that don't require talking."

"Eating?"

"Except for food? Yes."

"I'm not sure if we're still on the same page."

Both of them know that bantering and joking around will ease the tension, making the mood lighter. Because once it gets serious, it's impossible not to get emotional. It's either Chanyeol cries or Baekhyun gets embarrassed, there's nothing in between.

"Actually. Why don't you read the letter for me?" Chanyeol says, grinning wide. "I wanna hear it directly from you."

"O-out loud?" Baekhyun asks, taken aback.

"Yes, out loud."

"Right now?"

"Yes, babe. Right now."

With a loving smile across his face, Chanyeol patiently waits as Baekhyun makes himself comfortable. Obliging to the man's request, Baekhyun unfolds the love letter, clears his throat, and takes a deep breath before looking Chanyeol right in the eyes.

"Here it goes."

And from here on out, Chanyeol only listens as Baekhyun reads his reply.

"Dear Chanyeol."

Baekhyun smiles right away, because the first sentence of his letter already says it all:

"You know that I love you, right?"

Twelve years ago he wrote Chanyeol a letter as his best friend. Twelve years later, he wrote Chanyeol a letter as his lover. It could've ended right here, but this is only the beginning of his confession. He still has a lot to say.

Chanyeol already looks like he's about to shed a tear. Because the words he has longed to hear from Baekhyun, the assurance he wanted to have from him, and the feelings he yearned to be reciprocated; They are all flowing at this moment. He is speechless. He is happy.

"They say love makes your heart go crazy but when it comes to you, my heart feels at ease. This must be one of the reasons why I couldn't recognize my feelings for you sooner. I got used to your presence around me. I got used to the comfort and security you made me feel. Having you by my side was like breathing. You became a default in my life so I unconsciously took you for granted."

Baekhyun pauses for a second, taking in the sincerity of the letter he wrote. "This is a long one so please bear with me, okay?" Staring at Chanyeol, he hopes he properly gets his feelings across.

"In the past, while I was enjoying your company as my best friend, you must be suffering from the pain of being set aside instead. When I think of it, my chest hurts. I couldn't imagine how you went through such painful things all those years. I desperately wish I could go back in time so that I could undo what I did. I could have treated you better. I could have made you the happiest man on earth like you truly deserve."

Chanyeol shakes his head as though telling Baekhyun that he doesn't have to feel bad about it and that he doesn't need to feel guilty anymore.

"If I were to think of a time when I was the loneliest, it would be the time when we were far apart. And if I were to think of a time when I was the happiest, it would be the time when you told me you love me. People came and left, but it was you who stayed in my life. You are my home. Wherever I went, whoever I was with, at the end of the day, I'd still find myself going back to you."

Baekhyun shyly laughs, covering his entire face with the letter.

"For real, Chanyeol. This is making me blush. I'm actually sweating hard right now."

"God, I wish I could take a video of you. I wanna watch this moment forever. You look so beautiful and honest. It's my favorite version of you."

"Stay put, I'm not yet done."

Smiling endearingly, Chanyeol nods and rests his cheek on his bent knees. He watches the love of his life crumble down into a puddle of sweet goo while confessing his feelings for him. Earlier Chanyeol was in a state of disbelief, now he's in a state of bliss.

"So I asked myself a question. Could it be possible that I've been in love with you all along? I think I already found my answer."

Connecting their gazes, Baekhyun reaches for Chanyeol's hand so that they can thread their fingers together.

"Yeol, my love for you transcends all eternity. It's beyond brotherly love, beyond friendship love, and even beyond passionate love. I don't just say I love you. I say I could die for you. That's how much I love you. Believe me or not, there hasn't been a single moment in my life when my love for you has faltered. Whatever form of love that might be, I'm sure that I've always loved you. In the past, in the present, and in the future, I will always love you."

Moved, it's Chanyeol's turn to get teary-eyed and emotional. His eyes are sparkling and his lips won't stop smiling. He needs to look up to the sky so his tears won't stream down his face. He never releases Baekhyun's warm hand as it proves that everything is real.

"Just in case you're suspicious. No. I didn't copy this from the internet. I racked my brain for a whole month just to write this," Baekhyun says to crack a joke, making his boyfriend chuckle. "But this is nothing compared to what you did for me. I still got a lifetime to make up for everything."

Arriving at the final part of his letter, Baekhyun puts Chanyeol's hand close to his lips and kisses his knuckles.

"Baby, I love you. I'm in love with you. I love you with all my heart and soul. I love you so much, Park Chanyeol. You're my most favorite person in the world and my one and only love. I'm sorry for being 13 years late, and thank you for not giving up on me."

And then he places Chanyeol's hand against his chest where his heart rests.

"....This is my reply to you. Sincerely yours, Baekhyun."

The calm silence that follows resounds loudly on the riverbank. Under the glowing moonlight in the stillness of the night, they sit together on the grass after Baekhyun finally speaks out his emotions. With each passing moment, Chanyeol's yearning to hug Baekhyun grows as they gaze into each other's eyes. And so he acts upon it, facing Baekhyun and wrapping his arms around the other's shoulders for an embrace.

"This is the happiest moment of my life."

Pulling away, it was as if an internal agreement is understood between their souls. Their faces draw closer, and with a tender touch, Chanyeol brushes Baekhyun's cheek. He feels the softness of the skin beneath his fingertips before reaching down to hold Baekhyun's chin. Baekhyun smiles through the simple gesture laced with affection and gentleness. Leaning in, he then closes his eyes and decreases the gap between their mouths.

Their lips finally press against each other, soft and supple, in a kiss that contains their longing. As their hearts soar with freedom, their breaths mingle, kissing tenderly yet searingly.

To Chanyeol, it's different from the kisses they had before. This kiss feels like an affirmation that the relationship he has with Baekhyun is finally sealed. Savoring the sweetness of the kiss, time seems to stand still and the world around them seems to fade into a blur. All that matters right now is the way Baekhyun expresses his love through the connection of their lips.

The kiss deepens as their mouths move together in a perfect fit. With every subtle action of their lips, Chanyeol traces the slope of Baekhyun's jaw. His touch asks for Baekhyun's mouth to part in a silent invitation, and so Baekhyun allows him to lead while their tongues meet passionately.

Lost in the kiss, Baekhyun's arms wrap around Chanyeol's neck, hugging him closer, while Chanyeol's hands find their way to the small of Baekhyun's back, gentle yet possessive. Chanyeol places the man above him so that Baekhyun can sit on his lap while their kiss lengthens for a few more minutes. In this position, Chanyeol has his palm freely wandering to Baekhyun's hip while Baekhyun has his fingers slowly threading along Chanyeol's hair. Every touch of their hands, every brush of their lips, carries the intimacy and solace they are celebrating tonight.

With one final, tingling kiss, their lips reluctantly separate; It was as though they don't want it to end so soon. Chanyeol smiles, gently caressing Baekhyun's face.

"I love you."

Baekhyun smiles back, cupping the hand that is pressed to his cheek.

"I love you, too."

Locking their gazes brimming with overwhelming emotion, they both share a laugh, their voices blending in together. Their laughter is loaded with promises and joy as it echoes into the night like a beautiful harmony.

"Why are you laughing?"

"Hm? Nothing! Haha."

"You liked my kiss?"

"Yeah, I liked it a lot~"

Out of nowhere, Chanyeol's eyes grow bigger while looking at the night sky. He gasps, pointing in the air.

"Oh, a shooting star!"

Baekhyun almost breaks his neck as he turns his head around.

"Huh? Where!?"

He finds nothing in the sky, though. It was all darkness.

"It's gone now... I swear it was a shooting star. I saw it passing behind your head. It moved so fast. You should've seen it."

"That's a pity. I've never seen one before."

"Me, too. Well, not until 5 seconds ago."

"Have you made a wish?"

"How am I supposed to make a wish that fast?"

Chanyeol shrugs, grinning ear-to-ear. He boops the tip of Baekhyun's nose.

"Besides, I already got my wish right here. I don't need anything else."

Aren't I heavy? You can put me down now, Baekhyun says in a whisper to change the subject. He doesn't wanna embarrass himself more if he lets this guy flirt with him again. (Says the one here who's still straddling Chanyeol's lap and sitting on top of him.)

"Oh, is this position uncomfy?"

"Not really, but my knees are bent awkwardly. I think my blood circulation already stopped below my waist."

"Have we been kissing that long?"

"Yeah, we've been doing it for like, 5 minutes?"

"No way! It felt like a minute to me."

Helping Baekhyun sit back next to him, Chanyeol places the other's leg on top of his thigh. He massages the muscles to "stop the needles from pricking his skin" according to what Baekhyun is telling him. Does your leg feel sensitive? He asks, and Baekyun answers with a nod.

"Seriously. If I were you though, I would've still wished for something. My mind would automatically say it without thinking twice," Baekhyun says.

"What's your wish?" Chanyeol asks.

"Even if I tell you, it's still not gonna come true anyway. I couldn't catch the shooting star."

"It's okay, I'll grant it for you."

"Really?"

"Really."

"Then raise your arm like this so you can grab the next shooting star for me."

Baekhyun holds out his right hand up in the sky as if he was trying to reach the moon.

"Like this?" Chanyeol asks dumbly, imitating Baekhyun by stretching his left hand in the air. He inches his hand closer to Baekhyun so that his and Baekhyun's fingers are overlapping. "I can summon the shooting star like this, right?"

"Haha. Right, just like that. Don't put your arm down. What if another one shows up again? We'll never know."

"If another shooting star appears again, I'll make sure to wish for a brand new house. Like, not here in Korea. I want a brand new house overseas."

"Sure. Manifest it."

Baekhyun giggles. This guy's so easy to trick. And on one swift move--after opening the bottom compartment of the box he gave Chanyeol--he takes out the gift and slides it down onto Chanyeol's finger, slotting it perfectly.

"There. Now we're matching~"

Baekhyun replaces his right hand with his left hand, showcasing his matching couple bands with Chanyeol. It's a minimalist yet classy silver band with a black lining around the rim.

Chanyeol stares awestruck at Baekhyun smiling lovingly at him. The only matching things they own are those couple phone cases they use at work. Now they have official couple rings.

"You... You're surprising me quite a lot today."

"Do you like it?"

Chanyeol exhales, nodding, covering his red-as-a-tomato-face with his palms.

"Of course, babe. I love it. I love it so much. Thank you for this, really. This is amazing. But what to do..." He laughs heartily, shaking his head when he remembers. "I also bought us couple rings. I was about to show them to you on our 100th-day Anniversary."

Baekhyun snorts, laughing at this funny coincidence.

"For real? Hahahaha!"

"Yeah. And looking at this ring you gave me now, the one I have at home got a similar design and brand as this one, too."

"This is crazy... We do think alike. Omg. Besties goals!"

"Besties!? We just made out..."

"Yeah, we're besties and boyfies who make out."

"I think I like that more~"

"So what are we gonna do with these rings now? Should I return them?"

"No! You gave it to me. There's no taking back! I'll just return the rings I bought and give you something else instead. It hasn't been 3 days anyway."

"You also bought them on Tuesday?"

Chanyeol gapes in shock.

"Yeah, I did. Bro. Don't tell me you were also at Chrome Hearts on Tuesday!?

"I was there on Tuesday morning! I told you I was picking up something, remember?"

"Oh, I went there in the afternoon so maybe that's we didn't get to see each other. Seriously, this is insane..."

"Technically, I bought the rings first~ Go return yours and buy food instead."

Chanyeol thinks it'll be such a waste to return the rings so maybe he'll just exchange them for something else. A bracelet or a necklace would be nice, too.

"Baek, what do you think about deciding on two anniversaries? The day we officially dated and today."

"Hmm... How about three? The day you confessed to me, the day I officially asked you out, and today."

"No, let's make it four. The day I confessed to you, the day we first kissed, the day we became boyfriends, and today."

"You know what, since we love commemorating our moments together, five anniversaries seems a better idea. Let's include the day we first met."

Baekhyun brings that up as a joke but Chanyeol seems interested in it. But he agrees with Chanyeol's proposal though, about making the two special days their anniversaries: His and Chanyeol's confession day.

"The day we first met?" Chanyeol asks, finding it amusing. "Oh, just like Kyungsoo and Jongin? The day they first met is the day of their anniversary. They mentioned it to me before."

"Haha. I was actually curious if you still remember when and how we first met so I brought it up," Baekhyun honestly says, resting his head on Chanyeol's shoulder. "Do you know when our first meeting was?"

"Obviously, I can't remember the exact date anymore. But I do remember the month and the year of our first meeting."

"Say it in one, two, three!"

"June 2008!" They yell in unison.

Baekhyun claps proudly.

"Oho, nice one. You passed!"

Chanyeol sighs dreamily, reminiscing his younger memories with Baekhyun.

"It was the summer of freshmen year in high school. We were sixteen at that time. It's almost half our age now."

Baekhyun flinches, looking at Chanyeol in surprise.

"So we've known each other for almost 15 years now?"

"You didn't know?"

"Damn... And I just told you I love you just now? What the fuck, Yeol!"

"It's okay. You can make up for it by telling me you love me every day."

Getting his coat, Chanyeol unfurls it and drapes it on Baekhyun's shoulders to keep him warm. Sticking his arms out, Baekhyun slides them into the sleeves. Still cold? Chanyeol asks. Not anymore, Baekhyun replies.

"Let's go home. It's getting pretty late already."

"Wanna sleep in my room?"

"As much as I want to sleep with you, I can't do that with your family around."

A long, quiet pause settles in before Chanyeol realizes the weight of his words. Blushing, he tears his gaze away and tries to recover. Why did I even say it like that?

"I-I mean, sleep on the same bed as you," he reiterates, making Baekhyun explode into an amused laugh. "They might see us in the morning coming out of your room together. How would we explain that?"

"I don't see anything wrong with it. We've been close since then and we're both guys anyway."

"I know, but your brother already suspects something's going on between us. We need to be extra careful until we're finally ready to tell him about our relationship."

"Then how about you sneak out first before they wake up?"

Baekhyun winking at him seems to do the trick as Chanyeol finds himself taking Baekhyun up on his offer inevitably. As they arrive home (after returning Baekbeom's scooter like it hasn't been touched) Chanyeol tiptoes inside Baekhyun's bedroom and rejoices as soon as the door is locked. He jumps like a cannonball into Baekhyun's queen-sized bed, sharing the blanket with the smaller man who immediately punches him on the chest upon contact.

"Ouch, Baekhyun! What the fuck was that for?"

"You elbowed my stomach, you stupid. That hurt!"

Chanyeol's apology is in the form of a tackle, spooning Baekhyun from behind and covering the two of them with Baekhyun's blanket. He laughs, whispering over his boyfriend's shoulder.

"Hehe. You mad now?"

"I wanna sleep... Stop teasing me."

"Let's cuddle."

"We're already cuddling."

"Turn this way. Let's sleep facing each other."

"Okay."

Baekhyun lies on his side, scooting closer to Chanyeol's chest and tangling their feet under the blanket. Chanyeol has his hand petting Baekhyun's thigh in a slow, rhythmic beat to help him relax and fall asleep.

"I like it when we hold hands, hug, or kiss. I also like it when we spend quality time together. But do you know what I like the most?"

"Yeah? What is it?"

"It's when we talk. I like it more when we talk."

Baekhyun momentarily opens his eyes to look at Chanyeol smiling at him amidst the dark.

"I like talking to you and listening to you talk. I like sharing my thoughts with you just like how you share yours with me."

"Me, too. I like it when we're more honest and open with each other."

"Wanna talk before we sleep?"

"Sure."

Somehow, looking at Chanyeol this near as they share a pillow reminds Baekhyun of his high school sleepovers with Chanyeol. They used to stay up all night playing video games, talking about school, and sharing their problems in life which Baekhyun thought was already a big deal back then. Baekhyun recalls complaining to Chanyeol about hating his short height. His brother was tall so how was he born short? Baekbeom would always tease him that he was probably adopted and he was born from a watermelon which was why he was short.

Chanyeol would console him after complaining about how he also hated his height. He didn't like being tall back then. He said he'd always hurt himself bumping his head into doors and ceilings. He also hated how his feet would get cold at night because the blanket was too small for him, or how he'd always stick out among the crowd because of how tall he was at a young age. When he was in grade school, people would assume he played basketball when he only liked playing with ferrets. Just because he was taller than the rest of the kids, some would think he was arrogant and rude. When in fact, he was just a shy boy who wanted true friends.

When Chanyeol told him that story, Baekhyun remembers how he got extremely mad. He poured his anger by punching a tree. He got stung by a bee after that. He went home with a bleeding fist and a swollen butt. Yes, he was sixteen at that time.

That flashback suddenly makes Baekhyun smile. He was so dumb back then.

"We've already talked a million times since we met. What else should we still talk about?" Chanyeol asks.

Baekhyun thinks for a while.

"Hmm. How about saying something untold but obvious? Like, a thing you never told me because you think I already knew it. Well, how do I say this... Just tell me something you think I've already heard before but actually haven't? Ah, whatever. Just say any assumptions about me. I'll say something about you, too."

Chanyeol laughs. Baekhyun is cute when he rambles.

"Okay, that was kinda confusing but I somehow get it. I think I have one about you. A personality trait."

"Does it have to be something positive?"

"Mine is positive? I don't know about yours, and I honestly don't care if it's not."

Baekhyun shrugs.

"Okay, then mine's negative."

Whaaat, Chanyeol has this betrayed look on his face. Baekhyun smirks.

"Alright, me first."

"Fire away," Baekhyun says.

"You probably haven't heard of this before because you never really cared about how people would think of you, I mean, aside from your height..."

"I'm not short! It's just your tall ass always sticks beside me that's why people tend to mistake my real height. When in fact, I'm standing 5"8 tall. Damn it."

"Which is still short-"

"Which is slightly above-average male Korean height-"

"I know, I know... Haha. Okay, so going back."

Chanyeol brings his hand to Baekhyun's hair, touching his fringe and tucking some strands behind his ear.

"You probably haven't heard of this before but sometimes, people--or mostly some of our coworkers--would mistake your personality just by looking at your appearance."

"Excuse me?"

"Two things: It's either they think you are too cold or they think you are too cute. When in fact, you are both or neither of the two. You're just you."

Baekhyun is dumbfounded. This is the first time he's hearing this. What is even Chanyeol saying?

"I don't get it."

"Hah. See! I was right! Is this the first time you're hearing this?"

"Yes? And I don't understand. How am I neither and both?"

"Okay, so just think of this. From the point of view of a stranger, you look unapproachable and cold. You give off that 'Don't talk to me, I'm busy' aura. You're not worth my time. Piss off."

"Wait. I do?"

"And from the eyes of a younger male acquaintance, you look like an intimidating role model. Ah, that hyung looks cool. I wanna talk to him but he seems scary..."

"Oh... I think I get that one."

"Yeah, and once they get to know you better, they'll find out that you're actually kind-hearted and warm."

"Haha. My personality's quite tricky to figure out."

"Right? You got an I on your MBTI."

"I think I'm an E now..."

"Take it again. Your results will change."

"Did you get an E?"

"Yeah. I'm an ENFP."

"Oh. That's pretty accurate."

"And next, your personality from a woman's perspective... Wait, should I talk about this?"

"Yeah, just say it."

"And from a woman's gaze, you're just too cute."

"I'm sorry?"

"Of course, they think you're handsome, sexy, and attractive but you belong to the feminine male category. To them, you're cute, small, soft, girly, delicate, pretty, and adorable. You're a huge bottom. Sorry, I don't make the rules."

Baekhyun looks very offended. It's like his masculinity has slapped him on the face and given him bruises. This is more like a negative assumption than a positive one. Chanyeol lied.

"Yeol, you're just making up stuff. This isn't real."

"I know how you feel. I'm sorry, babe."

"Yeah, I do act cute, small, soft, girly, delicate, pretty, and adorable sometimes but that doesn't build my whole personality... And I'm not a huge bottom! How can someone assume something like that base on my looks? Isn't that stereotyping?"

Chanyeol nods to agree. He soothes Baekhyun's back to comfort him.

"But hey, does what people think of you really matter? They can assume whatever they want. What's important is your man's gaze. It's my point of view and the way I see you. Right?"

"Now I'm curious. What do think of me? You actually never voiced it out before."

"Oh, you really wanna know?"

Nodding, Baekhyun appears excited. Sure, he's aware that Chanyeol likes him for what he is but he actually doesn't know yet what Chanyeol exactly likes about him.

"Since then, the way I looked at you hasn't changed one bit," Chanyeol says, fondly admiring Baekhyun with his love-filled eyes. "I think you're really manly. You've got a very masculine personality which not everybody knows about. You have a beautiful and strong mind. It must be one of the reasons why I've always been attracted to you."

Now that---that is what makes Baekhyun smile.

"Oh. I-I didn't know that. Thanks, I guess."

Trying his best to hide his flustered self, he grabs a pillow and covers half of his face with it. Oh, god. Why is this making his insides feel mushy? Why are the tips of his ears feeling warm?

"Between the two of us, it's always been you who's the fearless one. You look like a puppy but you've got the courage of a lion. I really admire you for your confidence. I love how brave you are."

"Hey. When you say it like that, it sounds like I don't ever get scared."

Baekhyun shyly laughs yet he admits what Chanyeol said boosted his confidence.

"I do get scared sometimes, you know. Actually, I'm a little scared right now. Or more like, worried? And scared. A mix of the two."

"What are you scared of?" Chanyeol asks. "Are you worried that it's not gonna be smooth sailing for us from now on?"

Baekhyun sighs and nods, pulling Chanyeol for a hug so that he can bury his face against his chest.

"I tend not to care about the opinion of others before but I think I'm starting to have a change of heart now."

"Baekhyun..."

"Earlier, when I was telling Grandma about us, I felt scared... I sure was confident at first, but when I saw her initial reaction, my heart started pounding. I got really nervous. I kept thinking, what if she disapproved of us? What if she thought of me like I was a different person now? Like I wasn't the Baekhyun she knew before?"

Chanyeol hugs him even tighter; Baekhyun lets out all his untold thoughts and worries.

"But I trusted her and she trusted me. And it went well, thankfully. So I hope it goes well with our parents, too. And our siblings. And the people around us. But I still got a lot of time to prepare for that so I can take a breather for now, right?"

"Yes, of course."

"All I have to worry about soon is the future I'm gonna take with you. You know, about the second launch of our game and our professional growth? And where this relationship leads us to? We may encounter a lot of problems and misunderstandings along the way. We might also fight, hurt our pride and ego, and disagree about trivial things. But it doesn't seem all that difficult to overcome as long as we're together. With you, I can conquer the world. With you, I don't have to worry about anything."

Chanyeol stays smiling throughout as Baekhyun finishes his heartfelt speech. Leaning forward, he presses a gentle kiss on Baekhyun's forehead.

"You really speak my mind. I have no words."

"Did I get everything right?"

Uh-huh, all of it, Chanyeol whispers. "How about you? You said you have something negative about me?"

"Oh, that?" Baekhyun rolls his eyes, cackling. "I'm sure you've already heard this before but I'm still gonna say it anyway." He points a finger at Chanyeol's chest, "You're way too flirty."

"Flirty?"

"Yeah. You're too flirtatious."

Chanyeol raises an eyebrow of disbelief. How did things turn this way so quickly?

"Excuse me? How am I flirty? I only flirt with you."

"No, no," Baekhyun waves his index finger in the air, "I'm not talking about me, baby. I'm talking about the way you treat everybody else."

"Oh! You mean friendly, right? I'm friends with everyone! I like making friends and hanging out with them. I love being around people, but of course, I like being around you the most. But hanging out with friends, especially after work, is so much fun."

"You can't do that from now on. You can't flirt with somebody else, obviously, and hang out with people without my permission. With your family? Yes. With a group of people? Maybe. With just the two of you alone? No. With a woman? No. With a married woman? Still no. With a divorced woman? No. With your ex? Never. I don't even know if it's a guy or a girl but still, never. With a man? It depends. With a gay man? No. With married men and guys with girlfriends? Yes. With guys with boyfriends? Maybe. But still, it depends."

Chanyeol falls speechless. Is a jealous and possessive Baekhyun his new type of kink now?

"Wow..."

"Now let's go to sleep. It's past 12 already."

Facing the wall, Baekhyun hogs the blanket all for himself and never spares Chanyeol a glance.

"Hey, I may be friendly but I sure am loyal," Chanyeol says, pouting as he watches Baekhyun's back facing him. "I only loved one person in my life and that's you. For over a decade, I'm confident to say I only had feelings for you. Well, unlike someone I know..."

Baekhyun jolts and gasps. Hah! The audacity!?

Chanyeol giggles and coils his arms around Baekhyun's waist.

"Baekhyun, I may not always be the greatest out there, but I can promise you one thing. Rest assured I'll forever be yours," Chanyeol says, breathing over Baekhyun's shoulder, "If there's something I take pride in, it's being dependable and being able to protect what's mine."

Baekhyun glances at the mop of dark, messy hair nuzzling against his neck.

"You can depend on me at all times. I'll stay by your side whenever you need me. I'll be the man you can always lean on. I'll give you strength whenever you feel tired. I'll take care of you and your desires. I swear to protect your heart with all my life, and I'll make sure no one's gonna be able to hurt you anymore."

Baekhyun feels butterflies in his stomach, hearing those affirming words from Chanyeol. "Thank you," he mutters. Softly squeezing Chanyeol's hand above his torso, he senses his eyelids getting heavy. He knows Chanyeol is already sleepy, too.

Smiling, he reaches behind Chanyeol's head and ruffles his hair.

"Good night. Let's call it a day."

Chanyeol leaves a feather-light kiss on the corner of Baekhyun's lips.

"Mm, good night. Sweet dreams."

With their legs entwined beneath their shared blanket, they surrender for the night as their hearts thump in sync, breathing steadily. Baekhyun's bedroom is filled with a sense of security and peace knowing they found comfort in each other's arms. As they drift into sleep, tomorrow awaits them for a more beautiful chapter of their new life together.

Chanyeol wakes up at 5 am, fulfilling the promise of leaving the room before Baekhyun's family awakens. The floor is chilly when he steps on it barefoot, but the sight of his sleeping lover warms up his heart immediately. He is still clouded with sleep when he leans down to fix Baekhyun's blanket, giving Baekhyun an early good-morning kiss on the cheek.

"Right... My coat."

Washing his face in the bathroom, he then changes his pajamas into normal clothes before heading out.

"I hope no one's still awake."

Tiptoeing like a ninja, he makes a fool out of himself by thinking he is doing a good job escaping Baekhyun's room. He suddenly hears a loud cough coming from behind him.

"Good morning, young man."

Visibly flinching, Chanyeol holds his breath and stops in his tracks. Slowly, oh slowly, he turns his head to see the person who just caught him red-handed.

"Coffee?"

Grandma Byun, with her familiar hunched back and exceptional motherly aura, raises her cup of coffee. At the crack of dawn, she is smiling more radiantly than the sun that is yet to rise, greeting her grandson's lovely boyfriend first thing first in the morning.

"How about you make us some breakfast first before we begin the talk?"

Embarrassed, Chanyeol feels his entire cheeks heating up. She saw how he walked out of Baekhyun's room, didn't she?

"To the kitchen, dear. Now."

"Y-yes, Grandma..."

"Is Baekhyun still sleeping?"

"Huh? Oh, yes he is."

"Hmm... I see."

"NO, WE DIDN'T DO ANYTHING, GRANDMA! I swear! We just cuddled, nothing more. I promise! Please, believe me!"

"Relax. No need to explain, son. No need to explain~"
