1.1 ϟ Dreary Memories
The air was so damp, Remilda could feel just how much moisture was there. She had thought it got damp and cold in New York, but that was nothing compared to this place. Growing up, she had come to West Kilbride a few times and each time she hated it. The weather was miserable, and it actually made her miss the weather back home. But now, this was home. This cool, damp place was the place she got to call home. Although the weather was damp and dreary, the reason why they were even there made it seem even worse. Just thinking about it all made her feel so sick to her stomach and like she couldn't move.
Remilda and Raelyn had all of their new school supplies spread out on either side of the kitchen table. Textbooks, notebooks, muggle pens which was a new requirement so people couldn't sneak in enchanted quills. As well as two new small cauldrons each, and various other pieces of supplies.
"Do you have a notebook for...potions, defense against the dark arts, muggle studies, and...charms?" Raelyn asked as she scanned the schedule with Remilda's name on it.
"Who do you think I am?" Remilda replied, "Mom made made triple check everything before we left the store yesterday."
Raelyn smirked, "You did forget three notebooks and your cauldrons the past two years..."
Remilda forced out a sarcastic laugh as their father walked in. Their father had dark hair with strands of gray starting to reveal themselves. His skin was pale, and his eyes were dark brown. He had a crooked nose from the handful of times he had broken it when he was a kid. He was a good bit taller than both Remilda and Raelyn. As walked into the kitchen, he had his wand tucked in his belt, and was still wearing his nice clothes that he had worn to the Magical Congress Building for work.
"And I really don't want to have to convince Miss. Denber that I'm only bringing you supplies you forgot." he chuckled as he began to grab a coffee mug.
Miss. Denber was the headmistress of the school, and she was absolutely awful. Whenever parents came to visit or anything she felt like she had to spend thirty minutes with them to make sure they were who they said they were. And if a student was even suspected of cheating, they had to report to her-- she was awful. And, four years into being students at Ilvermorny, she still thought that Raelyn and Remilda were twins-- even though they weren't. They were Irish twins, Raelyn was nine months older than Remilda was. But to Debner, they were twins, and there was nothing they could do to change her mind.
"Start clearing the table, please," their father announced as he poured a cup of coffee. "your mum will be home soon and then we'll be eating."
But she never came home. A normal evening in August became the worst day that Remilda could have ever imagined. A few hours later, after her mother was supposed to get home, Helen Kruger, the head of the Aurors office came instead. Just to bring the worst message that they ever could have gotten...a message that confirmed the rumors that Remilda really didn't want to believe.
"What do you think they're talking about?" Raelyn asked as she laid on her back on her bed while Remilda sat cross legged on her own bed.
Remilda shrugged, but as she thought about the atmosphere that Helen Kruger brought into the house, she knew it wasn't good. And she was positive that their father had felt the same way when Helen asked if they could speak in private.
"Mom probably got hurt again," she shrugged. It wouldn't have been the first time that happened, but the churning in her stomach made her feel more anxious and made her think that wasn't exactly true.
"Maybe we'll get out of the first few weeks of school if she got sent to the hospital ward," Raelyn said, her tone a bit more hopeful than it probably should have been. But Raelyn was never really all that considerate when it came to things like that unless it was extremely serious.
"You won't do anything in school during that time anyway." Remilda reminded her, and Raelyn sighed heavily and nodded.
"True..." Raelyn stated as there was a rapid knock on the bedroom door.
"Girls can you come out here please?" their father's voice emerged from the other side; but it didn't sound right. And by the look Raelyn gave Remilda, she had heard it too.
The two of them got up from their beds, and made their way out of the room. They made their way down the short hall, and into the living room. Their father had seated himself back on the couch, and his elbows resting on his knees and his eyes pressed against his palms.
"Is everything okay?" Remilda asked as she stopped just behind the couch a few steps behind Raelyn.
The answer was no. Everything was not okay. It wouldn't be okay for a long time. Because their mother was gone, just like that, she was gone. And now they had to leave the states to move to Scotland so their father could get connected with the Order of the Phoenix again.
"Remmy, come on!"
Remilda snapped out of her thoughts and quickly sat up from sitting at her desk with her head down. She glanced back at the bedroom door and let out a heavy sigh. She then reached forward and slid her window shut before she stood up.
"And can you grab my backpack please?!" Raelyn's voice carries from down the hall and cut through the silence like a knife. Since they had gotten there, Raelyn had thrown herself into the new surroundings and had focused in getting ready to start their fifth year at Hogwarts instead of dwelling on what had happened only two weeks earlier.
Remilda however couldn't move past it.
At least not yet. How could anyone? It was absolutely impossible to see her father and not see or hear her mother. She just couldn't. And she couldn't imagine what the house would be like in a year if her mother wasn't here to make it feel like a home. But none of that mattered, in fact she would be lying if she told everyone she wasn't angry with how their father was just throwing them into reality. For example, already; a few days after living here, the three of them were going to see a family friend and were already going to be meeting their cousin, Harry. Remilda felt like she was living in a dream, everyone else was normal and living life while she felt like she was going crazy.
"Remilda!?"
"I'm coming!" Remilda shouted back as she hastily stood up from her desk, grabbed her bag from the floor beside her and then quickly grabbed Raelyn's bag on her way past her sister's bed.
The new house wasn't that bad, it was actually pretty nice. It was just the circumstances that made it seem so bad. But their father had tried their best to make the house feel like a home, and Raelyn had helped with a lot of the decor stuff. In fact she did most of it and their father just let her. The living room had their old furniture placed in a similar arrangement, however unlike the awful shade of green that the walls had been in New York, they were now a warm shade of gray, and the trimming was dark brown. Then the narrow staircase was decorated with different pictures. Most of them were of Remilda or Raelyn or the whole family. Then there was three bedrooms, one of which was a master room that had its own bathroom; their dad had taken over that one. Then Remilda and Raelyn shared the second biggest room so the smaller one could be converted into a guest room.
"Thanks, Remmy," Raelyn smiled as she took her bag from Remilda's hand as she walked into the living room. Where both of their trunks were already waiting. "This will be fun, Remmy." Raelyn assured her, "We'll know some people before school starts,"
Remilda sighed heavily, "We shouldn't even be starting school yet, Rae." she retorted, "Dad just made us up and leave after mom died. We barely got to say goodbye to anyone..."
"Is complaining going to change that?" Raelyn asked as she huffed out a sigh, her tone was clearly an aggravated one. Remilda had made her opinion on the entire situation well known since they arrived in Scotland. "Just try to enjoy yourself please?"
