Extras : The Afterlife

A/N: This isn't the third part of the original short story. The story ended where I left it in the second part. This part is only an extra, for all those people who wanted Anaisha to get a happy ending.

As for Kaisha, there would be a separate short story about her life, which I'll write later.

Some love stories aren't meant to get a happy ending, because eternal love has no ending, it keeps going on, irrespective of life and death.

The Afterlife

"You're just as beautiful as the last time I saw you, Anu."

She heard the familiar voice of her husband, not vague, but very distinct and enunciated this time. Her eyes weren't open, but she knew he was beside her.

Slowly, she opened her eyes, only to be blinded by the bright lights. It took her eyes a moment to get adjusted to these white lights. Once her vision was clear, the first thing her eyes saw was him, the longing at last satiated.

His face, just as youthful and handsome as when he was alive. There wasn't even a single scar on his forehead, not even the bullet injury mark. And his smile didn't have even a little sadness attached to it. It was contented and blissful, the one she loved to see on his lips.

"Kabir, I—" she only started to get shushed by him.

"Ssh, don't speak anything. Let me enjoy this moment of our reunion." he said, keeping a finger on her lips.

She obliged, but a faint cry reached her ears and she turned to look back, only to feel her heart break.

"Y-You l-left m-me, M-Mumma, j-just l-like P-Papa. You left me alone." Kaisha cried, holding her mother's photograph.

The mother in Anaisha cried, feeling the anguish of her only daughter, to whom she had dedicated her entire life. Though, the happiness of finally uniting with her husband was indescribable, the guilt of abandoning her daughter was equally agonising.

"Don't look back now, Anu. You can't go back to her." he said plainly, looking exactly where she was staring, unblinking.

"But now she has no one to call her family, she's alone." she cried.

"No, she has Atharv, and her kids as well. I know Atharv would take care of her, just as well as you had, all your life. Don't worry, Anu." her husband assured her. It did make her feel better, but there was still a tug on her heart.

"C'mon now, let's go." her husband said, forwarding his hand to her.

"Sure." she said, holding his hand.

They walked. A beautiful place it was, something that she had never seen in her life. And the person beside her, was no less enchanting than this place. She hadn't noticed before, but now as she did, he wasn't in his olive greens, nor the combat boots. He was dressed in whites, something that made him even more mesmerising to her, making her forget that she didn't even know where she was.

"Here, we are." he gestured to a park like place, with the only difference that the trees were white, not even a single of them had any greens or browns in it. This amazed her again.

Still holding her hand, he led her to a white wooden bench. They settled on it, and she decided to enquire about the place they were at.

"Where are we, Kabir?"

"Afterlife." Kabir promptly answered, the smile on his face intact.

"Really?" she asked, looking down at her own attire. It wasn't the cotton saree she had worn this morning, it was a delicately woven white saree. Her hair, too, were no longer salt and pepper. Rather, her hair were just like the time she got married to him, black and showing her youth. She, herself, was prettily youthful now, no longer her middle aged self.

"Yes, and it took you long enough to get here. Infact, I thought I would've to wait for some more years to reunite with you." her husband said, the slight despondency in his tone obvious to her.

"What do you mean I took long? I mean it was morning when I ... ." she couldn't complete, not finding words to explain.

"It was four days back, Anu. You breathed your last, four days back." he answered, his face stoic without a hint of the pain he felt when he saw her lose her life.

"What? But I felt like it was just this morning." she said, confused.

"Yes, I know. I felt the same. For some time I continued to think this was an illusion due to morphine and I would soon be back on the battlefield. But I didn't, and then I saw you and Kaisha in ou... your bedroom and realised that this was real."
His face still stoic.

"Did it...did it pain...dying?" she asked, the curiousity to know about him making her impatient. There were so many things she wanted to tell him, so many she wanted to ask. But this seemed the most suitable for this situation, after all, she needed time to come to term whichever stage she was in.

He stayed quiet, which made her wonder if she had touched a sensitive nerve of his. But before she could ponder on it, he softly spoke again.

"No, not really. It happened in just a moment. I was shot in my head, and knew nothing could save me now. But I wanted to continue fighting...to atleast make my death fruitful. Within seconds, I was shot again, three more times, but it wasn't as debilitating as the first time. Or maybe because I was thinking about you and our Kaisha in those very last moments of life. And the relief of knowing that atleast you'd know how I felt for you, was soothing. All this just made dying easier for me."
A faint smile adored his face.

His eyes weren't on her, rather they were on the white cloud like floor. Though, they were together, it seemed so formal to her that it reminded her of the time when they were alive. Their relationship was always formal and limited. And when she was ready to be open with him, he was no longer there.

"Your letter conveyed a lot to me." she said weakly, blinking her eyes to avoid tears.

"I know. I used to watch you and Kaisha read it together, a lot of times." he said, looking at her. "You're very resilient, dauntless and indomitable. The way you managed everything, I would've never been able to do if I were in your place. You're really valiant and strong."

"Your letter was my strength, Kabir. And Kaisha, my reason to exist." she said, teary eyed. "Your letter always made me feel as if you were beside me. That always helped me stay collected and intrepid."

"I was always there with you! Every time you felt me, I was there. It's just that I couldn't let you know that. But still, it was enough for me." he sighed.

"Now I'm here with you, and we might as well make up for all the time we didn't get with each other, despite deserving it." she suggested, her face brightening up with her biggest smile.

"Yes, we can." he agreed. "By the way, I'm happy to see Kaisha doing so well. I'm really proud to be her father. And I'm sure from a Squadron Leader, she will soon become a Wing Commander and go many more ranks higher."

"Yes, she will, and Atharv as well." she said, slightly poignant on remembering the family she left behind her, especially her grandsons, Krish and Anish.

"Yeah, he will too. He's a good chap, just a little too snobby at times." The dislike in his tone amused her.

"No, I don't agree. He loves Kaisha more than anything."

"Yeah, but he's arrogant."

"No, he's not."

"Fine, but you can't deny that Krish is like me."

"I know, that's why he's been named after your first name initial."

"I thought it was after Kaisha."

"Kaisha's first name initial is same as yours."

"I know, she's like me as well."

"Yeah, I agree. Just a little less talkative than you."

"Na, I'm not talkative."

"Yes, you are."

"No, I'm not."

"Yes."

"No."

"Yes."

"No."

"Ye—"

"I love you, Anaisha!"

"I love you too, Kabir!"

Finally, they confessed their love, for which they didn't get any opportunity when they were alive. And the formal feeling between them, also faded away. Kabir moved closer to her and softly said, "We're gonna make up for all the we were apart, and together watch over our daughter and her family."

"Yes, we will." she replied smilingly.

Her head on his shoulder, both fell silent. It was finally the moment they both were waiting for, the moment for their true love to triumph!
