Chapter 3 The little island coffee shop
Hello!
So I am going to warn you in advance that chapter 5 will in fact be set on Halloween and so I feel it is only right to update nearer Halloween. But let me know what you guys think. Because I could upload one on Christmas Eve about Christmas and that sort of thing.
Your options are:
1. Have me upload it early anyway.
2. Have me upload this chapter and then wait for chapter 4 sometime in October and then Chapter 5 on Halloween.
3. Update 3 + 4 per week as per usual. And then wait until Halloween until Chapter 5.
••••••
Okay. So that's that. LET ME KNOW! Comment 1,2 or 3. OR if you have another suggestion.
How do you guys like the new cover? I absolutely adore it and I was so happy. The previous designer of TSIWF is a friend of mine so when she made this I was just really thrilled. I did like my previous cover but apparently the girl on it had blonde hair...which Hazel doesn't opps and it did't fit the story too well I CAN'T SAY WHY MWAHHHA but I can say this one does more :) It looks more Autmny as the other one was too Summery. I AM SO OBSSESSED WITH IT OMG I GAVE HER A HUGE HUGFOR IT! THANKS!! Let me know what you think :)
My friend tried to get information about this book out of me the other day...aha I'M NOT SLIPPING YET MWAHHA.
Yeah I'm a bit crazy today...doesn't help that I'm doing maths homework...
OH AND check out the fancy new profile design here on PC! WOOP WOOP! SO FANCY
Okay. So without further ado, here ya go!
P.S SOMEONE HELP should I do instagram??? CONFUSED. I should've made one when I finished the first book and then I could post from the Isle of Wight. Stupid Lauren! I'm feeling paranoid about handiling two accounts...
I am so sorry for all of this ^ I should probably stop watching Harry Potter for a while...it makes me sorta hyper...

Hazel POV
"Good Morning Haze!" Gavin greets as he steps into the empty coffee shop, he shakes his hair like a wet dog and discards his dripping rain mac.
"Morning Gavin" I say, opening the hatch for him so he can join me behind the counter.
"I can't believe you beat me to it"
"I wanted to open up! I've never done it before and since Jason's only just given me the keys, I thought I'd give it a go"
"So you got here before it rained?"
"It was spitting when I left, thank god"
He nodded, using one of our towels to dry a majority of his hair and then slinging it around his neck.
Jason appears from the store room and glances at a text on his phone. He looks scruffy and tired, scratching at stubble on his chin.
"Morning" Gavin says.
Jason looks up, his phone still in his hand and he smiles at Gavin.
"Hello Gavin, you okay?"
"I'm fine, you?"
"Ehh, a lot of trouble with the cake shop"
Jason, who is our boss, owns several independent food related shops, I don't see much of him to be honest.
"Hazel, I'm sorry for making you work the Saturday shift" he adds.
"It's alright, I mean, I don't work another Saturday for a fortnight"
"Yeah, well okay, got to dash"
He opens up his black umbrella when he opens the door, the sound of rain hitting the pavement echoes around the shop, he changes the sign to OPEN and strolls out of the shop, closing the door behind him, he waves from behind the window, which we return and he walks off.
"Why was he here then?" Gavin asks as he switches on a few of the machines and I jump over the counter to wipe over the black tables again.
"Wanted to check up on me, then he went to check on the new coffee bean delivery we got this morning"
"Why?"
"I don't know Gav, why are you so interested? It's so boring"
"Just making conversation, how's Daniel?"
"Probably still in bed knowing him"
"I thought he woke you up last week?"
"That was a rarity"
"Does he know you're working today?"
"Nope"
"Hazel!"
"What? I don't have to tell him everything do I?"
"I suppose not"
An old lady comes in and Gavin glances at me, I nod and straighten my brown shirt and name tag, that we are required to wear and I smile at her as she approaches the counter.
"Hi, what can I get you?"
She looks up at the blackboard above my head and scans it with great interest, then she looks back at me.
"I'll have a slice of carrot cake with a cup of coffee"
"Black or white?" I ask, staring at the cash register as I press the numbers with my fingers, glancing at the board every so often to check.
"Black please"
"Sugar, honey, sweeteners?"
"I'll have a dash of honey please"
"Take in or away?"
"In"
"That'll be £2.50 then please"
She nods and dips a hand into her pastel pink handbag, searching around for her purse. Her pale hand emerges and she hands me the exact amount.
"Okay, take a seat and I'll bring it to you"
"Thank you dear"
Gav had already gone to work making the coffee, while I bend down to reach into the see through display case with my cake cutter, I cut through it carefully and I pull it onto a small white plate that has our logo that is also stamped on my t-shirt on it. I collect a knife, fork and spoon and I walk over to where the old lady sits reading a news paper.
"Here you go, I'll bring your coffee to you"
She smiles and adds a thank you before I retreat back to the wooden counter, Gav hands it to me and I give it to her.
"You know, no where else does coffee as good as you two do it here" she says in a quiet, fragile voice.
"Thank you very much, I'll be sure to tell my manger you said that" I say smiling at her kind comment.
Soon, the place has about 10 people sitting at tables, laughter once again is heard and everything feels nice, I like working here a lot and I get to talk to some of the locals and some of our regulars.
"-so I said to Bertie, if you are going to plant the petunias, you need to put them in with the yellow flowers as they are a buttercup shade" another elderly lady tells me, moving her hands for affect as she explains her husbands errors.
"Right" I say, showing as much interest as I can as I rest on the counter.
"Hazel, can you make me a white hot chocolate, large, to go, for the man waiting?" Gavin urges from the other side of the counter as he fiddles with the coffee machine.
I get to work as the woman continues her story, telling me all about how yellow clashes with purple and how 'Bertie' was doing it all wrong.
"But do you know what I mean Hazel?"
She looks at me in curiosity as I serve the man the warm, maroon paper cup and he smiles in response and adds a 'thank you'.
"My Dad always liked gardening, but he was never one to care about colour coordination, just if it looked pretty and how it grew"
"Oh really?"
"Yeah, he used to pick me sweetpeas and put them in a little shot glass on my window sill" I say with a smile as I rest against the wooden surface with my arms crossed, she shifts on her stool and smiles politely at me.
"That's nice"
She sips from her cup and then wishes me farewell as she hurries to collect her grandson from playgroup.
That'll be Laura soon, rushing out of the door and driving to collect my little niece or nephew.
I sigh and lean against the wall as tiredness hits,I walk over to the coffee machine where Gavin is once again trying to fix the radio.
"Gavin, it's broke" I say. Snapping out of my daydream.
"No it's not"
"It is"
"Isn't"
"Is"
"Nope"
"I'm not going to argue anymore with you, can I make myself some coffee?"
"I guess"
I'm not the biggest fan of coffee, the taste is unusual to me but I'll happily eat coffee cake. I just need the energy.
I quickly make myself one in a to go cup and I sit on the inside of the counter where nothing sits right now, I cross one leg over the other and I drink it gingerly.
I splutter at the bitter taste, pulling it away and forcing it down, I force more down as I raise it to my lips and I shudder this time at the taste as it slides down my throat.
The door opens again and I look to see Dan smiling, I sit back on the counter in surprise, waiting for him to approach as Gavin groans and rolls his eyes, I glare at him and he chuckles, turning back to try and fix the radio.
Dan reaches the front counter, his hair wet and stuck to his forehead and a wide smile on his face.
"Hey Hazelnut" he says as I hop down to hug him over the top of the counter.
"Hi"
"I finally found you"
"Sorry, last minute thing. I thought you'd be asleep?"
"Nah, I had to get up early for my own job, I do have one remember?" He says his eyes sparkiling and smile crooked with the humour he gets from his own sentence.
"Is that why your hair is sticking to your forehead, or is it from the rain?"
He nods and immediatly scoops it away to join the rest of his hair, sighing as it falls back into his face.
"I thought you didn't normally get in the water?"
"Josh pushed me in" he says, pouting slightly but shrugging his shoulders at the same time.
"That's really dangerous" says Gavin. Although you can tell he would probably do something like that himself by the glint in his eye and smirk on his face.
Dan turns towards his body to face Gavin and smiles at him as Gavin raises a hand in greeting.
"Sorry Gav, didn't see you there, you alright?"
"Yes thanks, mate"
Mate, oh my god.
I bite my lip to hold back my laughter and I approach a customer who Dan had dodged out of the way for.
***
At the end of my shift, a girl called Penelope, a quiet peaceful and polite 25 year old, takes over and I walk out of the shop with Dan.
"So what's the plan?"
"I was thinking...sweet shop?"
I smile at him as the memories hit and I look at the ground, a small grin on my face as I halt in my tracks, he turns around to look at me with a confused expression and raised eye brows.
"What?"
"I haven't been there since...the day after we arrived"
"Me either"
We stare at each other for a minute, his green eyes, bright and happy as per usual, search my brown ones.
"Race you!" He concludes suddenly with a childish giggle and takes off across the square, laughing at me with his hair whipping back from his forehead in the breeze.
"Hey!" I yell back, laughing, as I run after him, my ponytail bobbing against my back with every step I take.
"You're going to lose! Hazel is a loser, Hazel is a loser!" He chants and I roll my eyes as I continue to chase him.
"Oh no I'm not!" I reply back, a sudden surge of euphoria and adrenaline surging through me, I pick up my pace and race head to head with him down the road.
We can be so childish sometimes.
--------------------------------------
A/N So, I thought I'd give you a little insight of what it's like at the coffee shop where Hazel works on a daily basis, you all seemed to like Gavin so I added him into this story and he will be in it a lot. I haven't introduced Matt yet, but I will, trust me.
Remember to comment about the next few chapters (seen in the top A/N), what you thought of this chapter and the new cover and also what you thought of this chapter! It's not the best. :) Also vote! WOOO
