Chapter 8
But in the end, they all drift away. // Even the ones who promised to stay.
Tom sat at the top of the hill for another hour, sobering up before he dragged himself home and crashing into his bed. The next thing he knew was that he was woken up by the sound of his phone buzzing. It was Harrison shooting the boy a text that he was coming over.
The blonde boy wanted to know about Tom's drive home and about the rest of his night. What he didn't know yet, was that the night went not like he had imagined it to go. He had wished for the two of you to talk about what happened and maybe take the first step towards the revival of the iconic duo you once were. Harrison had seen that there was still something between you and he honestly couldn't wait to ask Tom about what had happened a few weeks ago, because he clearly didn't tell him everything.
Tom just got out of the shower as the boy arrived at the Holland's home. Harrison grabbed himself a glass of water before making his was to his friend's room, settling down on Tom's couch.
"Sooo?" Harrison grinned at Tom.
"What?" The brunette groaned. He knew what his best friend wanted to hear, but he also knew that he didn't want to talk about what had happened only a few hours ago.
"How'd last night go?"
"All good." Tom said through gritted teeth as alarm clocks started ringing in Harrison's head.
"Oh no, what did you do, Thomas?" The blonde boy groaned, almost throwing himself off the couch in the process. Did Tom fuck this up again?
"Nothing, we just talked and then I just simply asked her why the two of you never started dating although you had feelings for each other and then she went off about literally everything and yeah, that's basically it." Tom shrugged as Harrison sat up straight, turning his head towards his best friend who was sitting on the other side of the couch.
"I'm giving you thirty seconds to run before I fucking smash your fucking stupid head against the damn floor." Harrison groaned. He couldn't believe what Tom had just told him and he sure as hell couldn't believe how that boy managed to fuck this up again. How on earth did Tom think you had feelings for Harrison?
"What did I do now?" Tom still had no idea why Harrison was that pissed, for Tom there wasn't a reason to be that pissed off at him.
"She. Was. Never. In. Love. With. Me." Harrison said, with each word smacking the brunette on the back of his head.
"Can you get lost, mate?" Tom rubbed the sore spot on his head.
"No, because you're so fucking stupid, I can't believe you actually graduated primary school." Harrison groaned, settling back down on his end of the couch. He couldn't help but shake his head at the boy he called his best friend.
"Why are you so pissed? I stepped back to let the two of you be happy together, you clearly had feelings for each other?"
"Where the fuck did you hear that? TOM, WHY ARE YOU SO STUPID? At this point you're literally just annoying the fuck out of me." Harrison wanted to rip his own head off, just so he wouldn't have to listen to Tom being an idiot over and over again.
"I heard you, you and (Y/N)." Tom almost whispered, finally starting to open up about why he had walked away in the first place.
"What?" Harrison was confused. He was pretty sure that there had never been a conversation where the topic was your and Harrison's feelings for each other.
"I heard you. At Luke's party."
"What do you mean, you heard us? Mate, there was never anything between us, she's like my sister and I'm pretty certain that you were in love with her back then? Do you really think I'd go behind your back like that?" The blonde boy had finally lowered his voice, still trying to comprehend what his best friend was on about.
"No, but - like, I - I mean, I heard her tell you that your friendship was too important and that she was scared of admitting her feelings for you." Tom dropped his head in his hands, the memories of that night still haunting him to that day.
Realization dawned upon Harrison as he replayed that night in his head. He knew there had never been a conversation about his feelings for your or let alone your feelings for him.
"YOU ARE SO STUPID! OH MY GOD! I hate you so damn much right now. You are literally the biggest idiot that has ever walked this earth. I can't believe you!" Harrison shouted at Tom as he realized the boy had heard you talk about your feelings for Tom.
"Can you stop shouting at me?" Tom mumbled through his hands.
"NO! Because you're so fucking brainless."
"Wow, thanks, mate." Tom rolled his eyes, still having no clue about why his best friend was suddenly freaking out like that.
"Have you, at any point, heard my name fall from (Y/N)'s lips when she was talking about her feelings?" Harrison asked, trying to get Tom to realize that she was never talking about him.
"No I don't think so, but you were there with her."
"Yeah so? You MAYBE should've tried to talk to me about it, or hell, you should've talked to (Y/N) about it! You. Are. Stupid." Harrison glared at the boy next to him.
"Can we stop calling me stupid now? I get it. It was stupid to walk away from her just because she didn't feel the same for me, but what did you want me to do? Watch the two of you fall in love and be happy for you? I couldn't do that, Harrison. You're my best mate and all, and she was my best friend, but just hearing her say that, it ripped me apart." Tom finally lifted his head, as the tears shimmered in his eyes when he said that.
For the first time in three years, Harrison could see how broken Tom was. He never saw how much it had hurt him to walk away from you and to not have you in his life anymore. The boy may have still been pissed at Tom for being an idiot, but he decided to not shout at his best friend again.
"Mate..." Harrison moved towards Tom, putting his hand on the boy's shoulder.
"If you want to tell me again how stupid I am then just fucking don't." Tom groaned, making the blonde chuckle.
"I think I'm good for now. Why did you never tell me the reason?" Harrison asked, wishing Tom had told him. He would've been able to save the two of you a heartbreak.
"I couldn't - I - I mean, the worst part was that I saw that the two of you looked good together and-"
"Before you go on, I'm saying this for the last time: There was never anything going on between (Y/N) and me. Never. I can promise you that much and damn, mate, I wish we would've had that conversation before everything went to shit because I for sure as hell would've been able to talk you out of pulling that stunt three years ago." Harrison said as the corners of his mouth quirked up a little.
"But - that conversation between the two of you." Tom started again, looking at his best friend next to him.
"It was never about my feelings. It was about hers, but never about mine." Harrison smiled, remembering the first time you had told him about being in love with Tom. How he wished he would've known back then that he should have just ran inside to get Tom as soon as you admitted to having feeling for your best friend. He could've gotten you two idiots together before all that shit went down.
"So she did have feelings for you?"
"Oh my god, Thomas. (Y/N) didn't have feelings for me. Okay, look at me as I say something to you that's probably going to make you want to throw yourself off a cliff."
"What-"
"-Shut up. I'm talking now. Alright, here we go. Are you listening? Great. So! Yes, we talked about feelings and we talked about (Y/N) being in love, but at no point in this conversation was it about me. Do you want to know why?" Harrison grinned at Tom who was watching him in silence with a frown on his face.
"Because it was about you." Harrison flicked a finger on Tom's forehead who was just sitting there staring at the blonde boy after his jaw had dropped open.
"That is the best thing ever, (Y/N)." Tom laughed as he saw the Spider-Man action figure you had bought him for his birthday. He may have turned 18, but on the inside he was still a kid that was obsessed with superheroes.
"You could've at least gotten him a Batman one." You heard Harrison shout from the other side of the room. Flicking him off, you focused you attention back on Tom who was still gleaming with happiness.
"Glad you like it." You grinned as Tom pulled you in for a hug.
"I love you, Sunshine." He mumbled as he placed a kiss on your forehead.
"I love you, too, Tommy." You smiled as you felt the butterflies in your stomach go crazy. How much the two of you wished it wasn't just two best friends telling each other they loved each other.
"You're the best." Tom whispered almost as he wanted this moment to just be between the two of you. Placing his hand on your cheek, he caressed the soft skin beneath his finger.
"I know." You grinned as Tom's mouth curved into a smile, leaving you almost breathless. He had to stop himself from running his thumb over your bottom lip, he was so close to pulling you in for a kiss. Seeing your pink lips right in front of his own drove him crazy - you drove him crazy.
"Look at our favourite couple!" Sam laughed as he entered the room and saw the scene in front of him. Harrison immediately threw a pillow at him for ruining the moment. The blonde boy had watched the two of you and he was on the edge of his seat, waiting for one of you to finally close the gap between each other - but it never happened.
You, on the other hand, didn't sleep at all last night. You were still up at 9am, with your brain trying to put together the remaining pieces of that night Tom was talking about but it just wouldn't do it properly.
You let out a frustrated groan as your phone showed a new message from your boyfriend, making your heart skip a beat - not in a good way. You hadn't only thought about Tom, you had also thought about your relationship, coming to the conclusion that everything wasn't as perfect as you told yourself it was. You were still pissed at him for calling you to pick him up without wanting to go home. You were tired of switching between two different people you seemed to be in a relationship with and it didn't look like Jack realized what the problem was and he sure as hell wasn't going to work on it.
You also did something you shouldn't have done: You compared Jack to Tom. Why did you do it? You didn't know, but you did and sadly you had to admit to yourself that you needed to fix the Tom situation before you would be able to focus on anything else. There were still too many open questions and you wouldn't be able to move on from him if you didn't know his reasons for moving on from you.
Move on from Tom - that's what you wanted, right?
You told yourself over and over again that he had hurt you enough already, but you knew that you had to talk to him one last time - to say goodbye. Goodbye to the special bond you once shared. Goodbye to your memories of each other. Goodbye to your feelings for him.
"You and me - I feel like this is how it is supposed to be."
Bullshit.
