Chapter 10
But in the end, they all drift away. // Even the ones who promised to stay.
While your mum was still hugging Tom and telling him how happy she was that he finally decided to join you for the party, your brain was still trying to understand why he was here. It not like you weren't happy to see him, but it was some kind of unspoken rule that neither of you went to one of the family dinners ever since you stopped talking.
"Still got a place for me? I hope you don't mind me joining that unexpected?" Tom smiled at your mother before locking eyes with you for a split second.
"Oh, nonsense Tom, you know you're always welcome here." She smiled at him and pulled him into another hug. She was definitely waiting for the moment the two of your started talking again because you could've sworn she winked at you when she turned around to walk back towards the backyard, leaving you alone with Tom.
"Hi." The boy in front of you smiled, not sure whether or not you'd respond to anything he was going to say or do. After talking to Harrison he knew that he had to somehow fix your friendship and he thought that being there at the family dinners and being there for you in different situations in your life would maybe make you trust him again. No matter what, Tom was willing to try.
"Hey, come in." You said, returning the smile.
"I - I hope it's alright I'm here. I mean, I can leave, like - I - I know you said, you never wanted to see me again, a-and that I should leave you alone, but-" Tom started rambling, before you cut him off with a little laugh that escaped your mouth. He always started to ramble when he was nervous and you still thought it was adorable when he did it.
"No, no, come in, please. It's fine."
"Really?" To say he was surprised by your answer was an understatement. He didn't know what he expected when he walked over to your front door, but he definitely didn't expect you telling him that it was fine for you if he joined you.
"I'm pretty sure my mum would be pretty disappointed if you left." You couldn't help yourself but smile when you thought about the happiness on your mum's face when she saw Tom.
Your parents knew something had happened between you two, obviously, but they didn't know any details and they were being kind enough to not ask any further questions because they knew Tom was a sensible topic and they knew you were still not over it. You didn't know what Tom told his parents, but the fact that not even Harrison knew what was going on in Tom's head at that time made you think that they knew just as much as your own parents.
Tom followed you into the garden, making the mouths of his brother's drop when they saw him appear behind you. Seeing you next to Tom was something they hadn't expected to ever see again. Jack on the other hand didn't seem very happy about the fact that Tom showed up. Funnily enough, you hadn't even thought about Jack's reaction to Tom being there until you saw him walk over to you, only seconds after Tom had joined his brothers.
"What's he doing here?" Your boyfriend groaned as he put both of his arms around you, pulling you closer to him.
"Because his whole family is here?"
"Yeah, but I thought you guys didn't talk anymore? I thought you hated him or something." You could tell that something about Tom bothered Jack. He usually wasn't someone to be bothered by you talking to other guys, but something about seeing you talk to Tom seemed to intimidate him.
"We don't. Our families are just very close and our parents are good friends." You shrugged before freeing yourself from Jack's arms.
"Babe, I'll be right back, just gotta make a quick phone call, okay?" You excused yourself and walked back inside the house. You had a weird feeling about how the rest of the day was going to go and you knew you needed some backup.
"What's up?" the familiar voice greeted you only a split second after you had pressed the Call-Button.
"Any plans for the day?" You laughed, knowing that he was already waiting for you call. The boy probably knew that Tom was coming over and you were pretty sure the two of them knew that Jack was also going to be there.
"I'll be right there."
"Thanks Harrison." You laughed as he ended the call. If somehow shit was about to go down, you knew you needed Harrison by your side and you knew Tom was a lot calmer if Harrison was there with him.
Walking back outside, you saw that Jack had joined Tom and his brothers, making your heartbeat speed up immediately. You weren't used to seeing the two of them together and remembering how their last meeting went, you just wanted them to stay out of each other's way for the rest of the evening. Hell, you wished you had never asked Jack to join you in the first place.
Before you were able to realize that you were more bothered by Jack's presence than Tom's, you were being pulled into your boyfriend's side.
"Ayyy (Y/N). How's it going?" Harry grinned and you wished he would've kept his mouth shut just for once in his life. You knew Harry and you knew that he loved to wind you and especially Tom up.
"All good, Harry. I see you've already met Jack." You smiled.
"We have, I'm just waiting until he asks me about some embarrassing childhood stories." Harry laughed, making you groan.
"I've made you bleed once, Harold, don't make me do it again." You grinned, remembering the one time you accidentally hit Harry with a golf club.
"You hit him?" Jack asked.
"No, she just beat him up with a golf club and broke his nose." Sam burst out laughing.
"Listen here, you little shits. First of all Harry was standing literally behind me? Why would he be that stupid? So his fault! Second of all, why do you guys even trust me with a golf club?" You defended yourself.
"We let you come with us because Tom didn't go anywhere without you, so basically it's Tom's fault that you broke my nose." Harry laughed as you immediately felt Jack stiffen next to you after that comment. Your eyes caught Tom's as he sent you a quick smile, probably thinking about that specific day as well.
"(Y/N), for fuck's sake. You have to hold the golf club like that, not like that." Tom laughed as he fixed your posture once again. To say you were bad was an understatement, you were terrible and Tom had tried to teach you how to golf every since he went golfing with his dad for the first time and he was far from being a successfull teacher.
"Fuck off, let me do this. I can do it." You laughed, pushing the boy away from you.
"She really can't do it. I bet you five pounds that she won't even hit the damn ball." You heard Harry laugh behind you, making you turn around to glare at him.
"Alright, five pounds you say?" Tom grinned at his brother as you shot him a look that should have told him to not do it.
"Count me in as well, but I'm with Harry on that one, sorry (Y/N)." Sam joined his two brothers in betting on you.
"Come on, Darling. Don't make me lose ten pounds please." Tom laughed as he saw you get back into your position to finally hit the ball in front of you.
"Wait-" Tom chuckled as he walked over to you. Standing behind you, he put his arms around you and placed his own hands on top of your hands, making your mind go crazy. Having him this close wasn't something you were getting used to and it definitely made it worse for you to concentrate on the ball in front of you "-now, you all you have to do is swing the golf club back and forth. Don't make me lose money." Tom chuckled before stepping back to let you do the thing.
You did as Tom said and to your own surprise, you actually sent the ball flying into the distance - well for you it was the distance, other's would've probably just said you accidentally touched the ball and it rolled 20 yards.
"YES!" Tom shouted only a split second before he picked you up from the ground, running a victory circle around his brothers.
"You guys cheated, we all know she would not have hit that ball if Tom didn't get all touchy touchy." Harry smirked, knowing he would be able to make the two of you blush because of his statement.
"Shut up, Harry." Tom groaned, finally letting you down so you could stand on your own feet again.
"What? You think she would've actually hit that ball?" Harry laughed. You wanted to say no, because you knew you wouldn't have hit it, but Tom was the first one to answer.
"Yeah, I do! Fine, (Y/N), do it again." he turned around to hand you your golf club.
"You sure? I mean, she's pretty bad." Sam grinned, making you want to throw a ball at him.
"Why am I even here? All you guys do is be mean to me." You pouted.
"Aw, don't listen to dumb and dumber, Angel. They're just being dickheads today." Tom smiled at you as he pulled you into his arms. It had been the first and the last time he's ever called you angel.
"Aw yes, don't listen to us, beautiful, pretty, amazing Angel." Harry imitated Tom, making Sam chuckle when he saw that you were trying to hide your blush as you hid your face in Tom's chest.
"Would you shut up guys? For fuck's sake." Tom was getting annoyed by his brothers. He loved both of them to death but especially Harry knew how to make Tom go crazy - and he enjoyed every minute of it.
"Come on, let me do it again, so he can shut up." You giggled as you got back into position, placing another golf ball in front of you.
You didn't remember much between the moment of you swinging the golf club back and the groan coming from Harry, but you remembered registering something being in your way as you swung the golf club as far back as you could.
"OH SHIT!" You heard Tom shout as you dropped the golf club and turned around to see Harry holding his hands in front of his nose.
"Yeah, that's karma, Bitch." You laughed before you started your month-long series of apologies.
"I'm not taking the blame for that one, mate. You knew she was terrible. Should have kept your distance." Tom laughed, patting his brother on the shoulder.
"Hey! You used to tell me I wasn't that bad!" You laughed. Tom always told you he believed in you and he never once told you that you were bad at golfing.
"I bet you weren't that bad, Baby." Jack chimed in before pulling you even closer to him.
"She was. I can't remember her ever hitting a ball, well except for when Tom cheated and basically hit that ball himself." Sam grinned.
"How do you cheat when you're only hitting a golf ball?" Jack chuckled. You prayed that Harry wasn't the one to speak up, but since the universe was always being a bitch to you, you already saw Harry's mouth form a grin. Of course he would want to tell the story.
"We had this bet on that exact same day and it was basically us betting a fiver that she wouldn't hit the ball and Tom was the only one believing in her, so he then got all touchy and literally put the golf club and even her into the best position. So she basically had to only swing the golf club to hit the damn ball - basically cheating!" Harry explained as you saw Tom fight back a smile on his face.
"Tom huh? You guys were pretty close back then? What happened?" Jack asked, narrowing his eyes at Tom and making your alarm clocks go off.
It was like the universe was with you for once in your life, because Harrison couldn't have showed up at a better time. You hadn't even heard him ringing the doorbell, but you assumed your mother let him in.
"Hello my friends." He grinned as he threw his arm around Tom, noticing the cold glares Jack and Tom were currently sending each other's way.
Harrison saw the relief in your face as he showed up, so he did his best to get rid of the tension that had built up by starting to roast Harry.
To your surprise the evening went on without any further interaction between Tom and Jack. Tom mostly stayed with Harrison and Jack spent his time switching between talking to your parents and your sister. Since he was currently in a conversation about some of his classes with your mother, you decided to join Harrison and Tom who were standing in the garden with a beer in their hands. No matter how much you tried to avoid Tom that evening, your feet dragged you into his direction.
"Can I join?" You smiled as you reached the two of them who seemed to be talking about some random things in their life.
"No, go away." Harrison grinned as he pulled you into his side, making Tom look at the floor. The boy still had this weird idea of Harrison and you plastered in his head. You saw Tom avoiding to look at the two of you and you remember him asking you about your feelings for Harrison, which still confused you since there have never been any feelings for the blonde boy nor would there ever be any feelings for him - because you still had feelings for Tom.
You still had feelings for Tom.
Shit.
"I love you, Tommy."
Truth.
