The two girls sat in silence on opposites side of the room. One had a cap over her head and was next to an iv drop, a bright blue window next to her. The other one, looked at the ground with her fists clenched in regret and sorrow. The other girl looked at the other with a sincere smile and reached over and placed a gentle hand on the others, her hand losing its tense hold and relaxed as she felt the others lukewarm hand touch hers. The girl looked at the other with sadness as she saw her warm smile. "Well, this is it." The other replied, a smile still on her face as she said those words solemnly.
"No! Don't say that Hachiko!" The other hopped up, scaring the other and held her in a tight embrace, not wanting to let go. She felt she others bare skin that wasn't covered by the thin fabric of the hospital gown. It was cold, cold like the fall day it was and cold like the dark night in December where death lied, awaiting it's next victim, awaiting for the mourning and the funeral, awaiting for the time humanity feared the most. The other girl tightened her grip as she felt her cold body, not wanting to let go of the fragile figured that she loved so much, she didn't want her to leave. Hachiko, who feared this moment as well, returned the others hug and lied her head on her shaking shoulder as her heart sank in sadness.
"I'm Sorry, Margaret, but it has to happen."
"No! Nononono, no! Don't leave me, please. Just give me more time, give me more work and jobs to do. I can do this, I-I can pay this off, I can save you!" She exclaimed, her fists clenching, her tears making visible marks on the others thin clothing.
"N-No, you've done enough work You've done plenty-"
"But you're still like this Hachiko, nothing has changed!" Margaret cried, not letting go of the grip on the other. The two sta in silence once again, embracing each other tightly as they listened to the slowing beeps that the heart monitor echoed around the sad room.
"Hey, Margaret?"
"Hm?"
"Why does the world hate me?" Hachiko asked, Her hold tightening on Margaret.
"What do you mean?"
"I've never been liked by humanity, I've been push away into the depths, then I met you, the most glorious thing in my life," She started, tears streaming down her pale cheeks as she buried her wet face in her shoulder. "You protected me from everything, and once things got good, this happened. So why? Why does this have to happen?" She asked, the other one crying with her. They had nothing to say after that, it was true after all. No matter how much she worked, no matter how many jobs she worked, no matter what she did, the earth wouldn't let them have their happy ending that they dreamed up, the ending every girl wanted to have when they were younger, so why?
Hachiko pulled away from the tight embrace and smiled happily at Margaret, who felt an endless weight on her shoulders as she saw that smile once more, the smile that brought her joy, that smile that she would only see once more before she left for all of eternity. Hachiko reached her cold and shaky hands up to her head and pulled off the cap that was on her head, the cap that hid the truth, the cap that hid her bald head that once had a beautiful blue sea. She placed it in her lover's hands, not wanting her to forget her, to forget all the fun times, to forget everything they did, not wanting to forget her love that she will forever hold for her. Margaret embraced her once again and cried in her cold and pale shoulders, the dying girl hugging her back. The heart monitor slowed, its lines having more flat lines and less humps, signaling the couple to say their last goodbyes, their final farewell. "You are my sunshine, my only sunshine," Margaret started, her voice shaking in sorrow.
"You make me happy when skies are grey.."
Hachiko clutched onto her with the remaining strength that she had left, tears running faster down her cheeks, not wanting to leave her lover by herself, she wasn't ready to leave yet.
"You never know dear,"
The monitor longed as the digital humps in the straight lines lessened, the fearful flat line becoming a reality and less of a dream.
"How much I love you."
Hachiko's weak body became more limp, her strength slowly coming out of her tightened fists, tears running down her face as she looked at Margaret once more, remembering her face before she went away, hoping to remember her when she left.
"Please don't take my sunshine away."
The dying girl smiled at her and muttered a soft, but audible, "Thank you" and smiled, the monitor going flat and her body going limp as she let out her final breath and left, never returning as herself again. Her loved hugged her body and cradled her, not letting go of her true love as she left, leaving her to carry on her legend once more
