#16 Labor Day Weekend
My mouth was snacking on Blueberries while I sat in the back of a jeep on the way to the beach while Doug drove. Steve sat in the passenger seat while me and Avery sat in the back. I was beyond grateful that she brought blueberries with her in her beach bag.
"So, Steve, I hear you have a food truck," announced Doug who was speeding and spitting sunflower seeds.
"I do. It's called Waffle Sandwich. They're some of the best sandwiches in the world."
"Really? You know, I work at a breakfast shop. I don't know if you've heard of it, but it's Wild Dingo Eggs. My buddy Bronco owns the joint and he makes some good eggs."
"How do you like working there?"
"Oh man, it's the greatest place ever. I wouldn't trade it for anything. I honestly could see myself working there for the rest of my life."
"I don't know if you heard of Papa Llama. It's a new restaurant in Scottsdale. Well, I recently applied and I'm waiting to hear back from them soon on an interview."
"Papa Llama huh?" he put a handful of seeds in his mouth. "Sounds like your living the dream. I'd love to see the place."
"For sure. You can all come once I get the job."
Once he gets the job? I was surprised by his confidence. He still needed to be interviewed. Who knows if that was ever going to happen? The boys continued to talk the rest of the two hours we had left to get to the beach. Meanwhile, Avery and I Snapchatted each other making funny faces. The time went by quickly when we finally arrived at the beach.
"There she is ladies and gentlemen," announced Doug. "The Atlantic Ocean awaits."
Within a half hour, we were all settled on the beach. Our shade was set up along with our towels and bags. It was the perfect Friday to be at the beach. While Doug spent the next hour renting a jet ski with Steve, me and Avery sat in the water in our bikinis.
"Aren't you glad you came?" she asked. "Let's be honest. This is probably the best Labor Day Weekend you ever had? Am I right?"
"So far, I think you might be right?"
She laughed. "See dude, I knew it and Doug really likes Steve so that's a plus."
"Oh, I know, they're like peas in a pod."
"Or Blueberries." She handed me some from the box.
As we laid in the sun talking, the boys returned with the jet ski.
"Who's up for some adventure?" asked Doug.
We all got on the jet ski. Doug was the driver as Avery sat behind him. Steve sat behind her, while I sat behind him. Ready or not, Doug took off and sped like his life depended on it, but I was glad he did because I loved the wind that pushed against me. Going fast against the waters, getting a few splashes of water on, and wind felt liberating. We all screamed in pure joy for the next hour as Doug did everything he could to make everything thrilling. He spun us in circles a few times as well as a few bumps out of the water.
"Run Margo! Run faster!"
Savannah challenged me to a race at the beach on a hot summer day. It was a sister's day without Steve. Savannah was clearly the faster runner. She kept joking that I drop volleyball and join cross country.
"Feel the wind in your face."
Not really the way I wanted to spend my day at the beach. Maybe she should've brought Steve.
After the hour was up, the jet ski found it's way back to the shore.
"Y'all have a good time?" asked Doug.
"Oh yeah," we all said in unison.
Heading back to our shade, I noticed a volleyball net with people playing. Steve who was walking with me also noticed.
"Are you thinking of playing?"
I nodded, and he dragged me over to play. The players were ecstatic that we were joining.
"Watch out, this girl is a pro" announced Steve right before I served.
He wasn't wrong. My serve was a great serve and the girl on the other team tried to hit over the net but failed. As the game continued, the other team was working twice as hard. Whenever the ball came to our side, the people on our team gladly let me run towards them and spike the ball towards the other side and cheered. For the next game, the other team wanted me on their side and I accepted. We played several rounds with me switching off. Eventually, I got tired, and Steve agreed that it was time to rest. Everyone shook hands with me and thanked me for a great match. One even offered that I come back later. It was fair to say that I felt great about myself.
"I recorded the entire thing," announced Avery who pulled out her phone to show me.
Sounds like a great Labor Day Weekend so far. Don't forget to comment and vote!
What do you usually do on a 3 day weekend? Is Steve too confident about his job possibility? What do you think of the name Papa Llama?
