Fine Again
My dream that night was vividly dreadful. I was standing on the balcony of a high rise apartment. I looked down at the view below, cars on a freeway and people walking the streets, hands full of shopping bags and cell phones at their ears. My left hand shook, bottle of Smirnoff vodka threatening to fall from my grip. I took a long gulp. It seemed as though I couldn't hold it anymore so I put it on the ground. I felt myself nearly slip and I grabbed the railing. As I jumped over the edge, I woke up.
I woke up scared, sweating and shaking. Shaun lay sleeping across the room. He looked calm and at peace. I shed a few silent tears as I curled up into a ball, facing away from him. I tried not to wake him as I forced myself to sleep again.
Shaun's POV
She didn't know it, but I wasn't sleeping. I woke up at 2:30 in the morning and saw her tossing around. She clearly was having a vivid dream and when she cried, I knew it wasn't good. 'What's on your mind Emma?' I decided to follow in her footsteps when I saw she fell back asleep.
Hours passed and it was now 7:00. I woke up to her still asleep on the couch and my brain hatched an idea. I'd make breakfast for her. I headed to the quaint little kitchen and opened the fridge. What stood out was eggs, bacon and a big jug of orange juice. I quietly searched for the pans and cookware. I began cooking. I had made it through with no snags until I had to grab the plates. I opened the cabinet and Tupperware came tumbling out onto the floor. "Shit!" I cursed as a loud noise resounded. The metal spatula had hit the floor too. "Shaun..?" I heard Emma's voice. The noise woke her up. "Oh hell... I'm sorry, I tried to make your breakfast and my clumsy ass dropped your things." She smiled at me from her place on the couch. "It's okay. Thank you." She got up and came to the kitchen as I cleaned up the mess. "Hey, I got it" She tried to help me but I objected. "No, you sit down. I've got a handle on it." I made each of us a plate and poured two glasses of orange juice. I set them on the table for us. "You really didn't have to do this. You're too kind." She said. I told her it was no trouble and sat down across from her.
*time skip*
I was chatting with Emma, still at her place, when I got a call.
"Hello, this is Shaun." I answered.
"Shaun, it's Dale. We're holding practice in an hour. Be there." I'll have to tell Emma that my bassist needs me. I don't even think she knows I have a band, even though we've been together for a long time now and put out a few albums.
"Alright. See you soon." I hung up the phone.
"Hey Emma, I've got to meet my band at practice in an hour. Will you be alright here by yourself?" I asked her. She hesitated for a second. "Yeah, I'll be fine. Don't worry about me." She smiled, but it wasn't very convincing. "On second thought, you should come with me. I honestly think you'd enjoy our music. I'm actually surprised you haven't heard of us. We've had a couple of albums now." "Sure, I'll come. Thank you." She said. 'Good. I think that's best for us both. I don't really feel comfortable leaving her right now.' I thought. "Well, it's a few minutes after 1 right now and practice is at 2. So let's leave in about 15 minutes so we can have a few minutes for you to meet my band-mates." She nodded her head in agreement. When the time was up, we exchanged smiles and headed to my car. On the way, I called Dale to tell him there's something special I want to ask of him to do for Emma. She's going to appreciate it I think.
