Chapter 19

With the flashcards in their hands, Snow and Casey had a set of questions prepared as they were quizzing the other person what they know about each other. They have been spending quality time that they may know enough of what they're like.

The two sat at a table outside on campus as several students passed. Casey placed down a flashcard on the table, and it was Snow's turn to ask a question.

"What is a typical day in my life?" Snow asked him.

"A typical day. Hmm," Casey said, staring off to the side with his thoughts to himself.

She reckoned she wasn't hard to figure out since she had mentioned before her favorite hobbies and things that she'd like to do during her days. Soon Casey came back to her with an answer.

"You'd like to get a head start in the morning. You like to take care of your skin and make sure they're good. I don't think you take too long to get ready, but also I think you care enough that you're decent. Maybe ten or fifteen minutes? You eat just whatever is there if you have classes, but if you don't, you have something better. You like watching television in your free time but also read some cliche novels. Is there more?"

She shook her head. "I think you're good."

"Cool," he said casually.

Snow put down a flashcard in front of her with the others remained in her hands, and Casey went next, reading his question out loud.

"What is my favorite drink?"

"That's easy, coffee. Americano," Snow said simply.

Casey shook his head. "That's a good answer, but no."

"What," she exclaimed, "but I thought you like drinking it since you usually get them."

"I do, but that's a more of a to-go-to drink, not my favorite drink," he corrected.

"Okay," she said calmly. "What is it then?"

"Gatorade drinks."

"I've never seen you drink one." Snow didn't picture him as that kind of guy.

"Then you didn't catch me. I have some at home," he mentioned.

Okay, okay. There is still a lot of things I don't know about him. She weakly smiled at him and read the card for the next question.

"What would be my dream vacation?"

The place she's thinking of would have spring and fall often with the best weathers, rich In historical attractions with stunning sceneries where she could spend the day all day outside, feeling like a small-town girl who wakes up to see people strolling or cycling and look around the small towns and pubs. She loved growing up in Canada but looking at the ridiculous amount of beauty in Germany had her convinced to turn her head.

"You look like the kind of person to enjoy food and drinks, maybe somewhere not too expensive, but you want the luxury to see different attractions?" Casey said thoughtfully, one of his eyebrows raised at her. "You enjoy the sun, I reckoned. Maybe somewhere tropical... but you could be comfortable anywhere, right? That's a tough choice."

Snow sat there, managing to not saying anything as he was trying to think this one though it seemed.

"Can I take a guess?" he asked, then continued, "It could either be Greece, Hawaii, or Australia?"

"Nice try, but no. I would love to visit Greece one day though, and spiders scare me." She'd shudder at the thought if she even saw a spider or worse, an exotic spider which increased its size tremendously.

"Then what is it?"

"Germany. They have this old world and modern charm when you walk down the streets, and it kind of looks like you're in this fairytale world. Palaces, castles, cathedrals, and monuments. Everything looks so cozy, and just imagine the people there; it sounds good to me." Hopefully, someday she could travel there and see the beautiful sights for herself.

"Oh, you might fit along just well then," Casey said and prepared the next card in his hands. "Would I care about my partner's appearance?"

Observing well at his appearance, he wasn't the type of guy to care about his own; he threw on his clothes, and it looked usual like every other day. But what did he think of her? What did his former girlfriend, Raquel, look like? Was she the type to throw on makeup and wear all nice clothes sometimes? Snow's own appearance may not compare.

"Maybe not?" she guessed.

"Is that what you think?" he asked her with her expression coming across with uncertainty.

"Yeah?"

"True, I don't care if she likes to keep everything natural or if she wants to glam up, but." There was that but in which he had a little bit more to say on the matter. "It didn't mean that I don't like seeing her put an effort into her appearance. I think that's... attractive."

"Really? Do you?" she questioned him.

Casey didn't say anything more as he put off the flashcard to the side then looked at her cards.

Weird, do I not have an effect on him? Snow scrunched her mouth to one side before shaking off that thought. Her focus went back to the question before her. "If I could time travel, would I travel to the past or future?"

"The future."

"And you're certain about that?" He wasn't wrong, but she wanted to hear why he thought that.

"I think so. The present is okay, but you want to get more out of life and look forward to things that could be different even though you don't know what they may be. I don't know much about your past, but it looks to me that you don't mind how it is even if they may not be your greatest moments," he said, surprisingly almost like he knew what was on her mind.

"Am I wrong?"

Stunned, she sat there staring at him. Casey was more observant than he led on, or she was easy enough to guess.

"No," she said.

Casey looked at his card. "What are three words to describe me?"

This was an easy question to answer. He looked just as much as his personality would appear like. "Private, collected, and... hidden depths."

"Hidden depths?" he said confused.

"Yeah, like," Snow drawled, thinking about the right words to put together for him. "You might be a treasure underneath, but no one has unlocked the lock yet, so there may be more to you that I don't know about."

"You think that?"

"Clearly. Someone has to, wouldn't they? There is a heart in you. We all have one."

He shook his head, disbelieving. "I wouldn't go as far as to say that, but okay."

What would he say then at the last part, but before she could say it, he gestured to the card in her hand, so she moved on instead. "What would I change about myself?"

Casey studied her intently, his piercing gaze locking onto her figure. She suddenly grew nervous; she couldn't recall when was the last time a guy had checked her out, not that she thought she was worth checking out. It wasn't like she was pretty enough for guys to look her way. Snow could blend in with the rest of the crowd, and no one would give her a second look.

There could be so many things that she could change about herself. The things she could note was her height. She used to be like other girls standing at the same height as them, but then after middle school, she had grown taller, and the guys always prefer shorter girls. Her body was also an issue. She thought that gaining pounds was unacceptable and didn't look like that next girl like she came out from a photoshoot. She didn't have a big breast or a big butt.

Her breast has a little bit of a shape to it, but it didn't stand out. Without a bra, she looked almost flat-chested.

"Your shyness. You wish you can be more free-spirited and confident in yourself without worrying what anyone thinks about you." Casey snapped her out of thoughts.

Her now astonished eyes looked at him. Casey continued, "A lot of girls may deal with this, but stop worrying about your appearance. You can't change yourself and who you are. I don't get why they would want to do so many ridiculous things. If they're happy with going for what they want, that's good, but you're happier if you let things go and just be."

"I don't know if that's your answer, but I think a reminder is good every once and a while."

"I was thinking I want to change how I look at things, but that's really close. I'm... impressed." Color her speechless because that was still good, and yeah, along those lines, she would want to change a little bit of her personality.

"Don't change yourself. I think you're good as you are." And at that moment, she was caught off guard by his words.

What? Snow tried to say but instead kept it in her head.

Casey read the next question. "Pet peeves in a relationship?"

"I don't think we ever talk about those."

"Well, can you guess them?"

"I don't know. I can't tell about that." Snow chuckled; she couldn't know much about someone else until that day would happen.

"Then what do you think I wouldn't like to see?"

Snow pictured a genuine relationship with Casey. What would he not have wanted? So far that they have been together, it was interesting but also weird. Had she done anything wrong so far that may annoy him slightly, but he didn't say?

"Pushing your partner into something when they're not ready for it?" It may be common knowledge, but that's something important to keep in mind about. A few times that she mentioned about his former girlfriend, he went rigid, and she was afraid to press the subject further.

"That's one." He nodded.

"Stubbornness?" she took the next guess.

He tilted his head, a slight 'tssk' escaping his mouth. "More or less. Maybe a little less."

"Why don't you tell me more?" Snow said, wanting him to say it than have her to keep guessing.

"When someone acts like they're fine, but they won't tell you what it is, and they leave you to guess what the problem is like I'm supposed to know right away and just stay mad at whatever it is."

"Has that happened to you?"

Casey looked away, his eyes drifting to a student who just finished their sandwich and got up to leave. "Yeah, but I rather not get into it."

There was a moment of silence, and all that could be heard were people talking around in the background as a breeze flew by her legs. As though she sensed he's going through a flashback through his mind, she needed him to come back. One hand reached out, and just lightly, her fingers brushed onto the sleeve of his arm. He was surprised, as he looked back.

"It's okay," Snow said softly.

It looked like he appreciated her concern since he didn't pull away and just let her continue for a few seconds before she pulled away.

"Do I believe in love at first sight?" she asked.

"You strike me as the type that would if the movie-making magic suddenly dawn at that moment with that person, and as you slowly check out their features, that's when you begin to feel that feeling. No offense," he observed.

"What are you talking about?" Snow denied, her voice in a high pitched.

"You're not denying it," he pointed out.

"It's not true," she said, darting him a trying-to-be threatening glance, but it was her being embarrassed about it.

"Really? How do your crushes start out then?"

"I-" she spoke quickly but stopped herself since she didn't know how to answer that.

"Do you fall fast or?" he asked straight up.

"Yeah, right." Snow was still not selling it as she looked more unconvincing.

Her crushes, as silly as it sounds, were usually hit promptly when they're cute, and a moment of blur emerged in the background. She would feel flurry in her skin and not just the McFlurry dessert when it's cool, and you use the spoon to swirl the insides until they become mush. It was just like there was something about them that just leave her thinking until she wanted more.

But she wasn't going to flat out admit it to him or otherwise, she sounds exactly like a hopeless diehard romantic with no life.

The story of her life didn't need sad details.

"Someone's lying," Casey sassed.

"And where's your proof?" Snow said defensively.

"Your high-pitched voice, the shape of your brows, and you continue to persist is enough," he explained, and she instinctively touched her eyebrows.

Maybe a point is taken. Snow wondered why her voice would do this to her.

They continued taking turns to quiz each other about what they might know of their partner, and they got a better understanding of each other.

Casey had a way of analytically seeing her through, and for Snow, at least she understood him better than she did before. It was a way of seeing where their relationship stood with each other. They needed to work on it more. The questions weren't just questions, but the answers they gave were a piece of who they are and how closely they know each other.

Snow tucked away all the flashcards in her backpack and lay her arms on the table as she had her chin sat on top of it. "I think it says that you and me are still a little bit off, but it's possible to grow closer within time."

She smushed her cheek over her hand and watched Casey as he ran his hand over his hair. His features look more like a prince at this angle.

He pulled out a water bottle, uncapping the top, and brought it close to his mouth. Even from simply drinking water, he looked good. They spent time together, and she hadn't realized how good he looked. Did he know that?

If he wasn't a friend of her friend, would they spend time together like this?

"Hey, by the way, can we take time off on Thursday?" Casey asked, the sound of his voice bringing back her attention.

"What?"

"This Thursday?" he said. "I want the day off."

"How come?" she asked.

"I... made dinner plans with my mother."

"Oh? Are you saying you don't eat with her at home?" Snow wondered, realizing that they never talked about family before.

"Only sometimes, but like she made plans for us to go out and eat somewhere."

"That's cool. We can do it in the afternoon then?"

"I'm not feeling up to it. I think I'll spend that day to myself and just take time off if that's cool."

"Um, sure." Guess that meant for her to move it to another day then. "Are we still on for Friday?"

"Yeah."

The awkwardness became evident now; she cleared her throat. "So, how was midterm?"

"It was last week, but I think I did all right on it. I remember most of what's going to be on it," he said. His tone told her that he was glad that was out of the way.

"You think so?"

"It's all based on reasoning and the lectures from class. I studied a little, but I took in it quickly. By the way, thanks for breaking down the Chemistry the other day. I don't think I would do well on that."

Before, she had found him sitting by himself working through the problem alone, and he looked like he was struggling with it. She swooped in and saved him because of her intelligence, although she was a bit confused, after viewing the steps and what's written on the notes, she got them down. Snow was proud that she could do something for him.

"Not a problem. I need Chemistry anyway, so glad I could help out," Snow said.

"How about you?"

"I had mine this morning, so I hope I did well on them." She studied for hours and went to bed early so that she could wake up extremely early to cram in more time for studying. When it came to quizzes or test days, she didn't handle it well, and she needed tons of reassuring even if, in the end, she somehow managed to ace them, most of the time.

"I'm sure you did well. Anyway, I'm a head off to my next class, so bye." Casey took the strap of his backpack and placed it over his shoulder as he got up, walking away from her. His figure was becoming farther out.

Now Snow had a free Thursday to herself without him. She wondered what else she could plan out for them. The days were still an unknown mystery, but she could find out more about him, and maybe she could expect to see what's to come.

Maybe, just maybe, she would just try to enjoy the moments she'd have with him.

▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓

Happy December and the first day of it. Time sure flew by fast. I almost thought it was actually slow since this year has been long, surprisingly. I think it's because we're inside much longer. But let's not think about that. We can think about the holidays though. Start getting into that.

Snow and Casey are getting to know each other, but now this is about seeing how much they know about their partner, a check up, you can call it. Not only spending quality time with your partner, but also how much they learn from the other makes a relationship stand out. I try to incorporate from little things that they like to what they may be a little flaws or perspective in the way of that they see everything. There will be more of those like opening up even further about deeper things as we go further, and you may see how it ties into everything about their relationship and communication.

Something about their personality in later circumstances will show mistakes later on as we get onto that. Neither side is bad, but we learn from things.
