Chapter 19...

Song: If Only-Descendants

Brock's Pov...

"You've got to be fucking kidding me." I clenched my hands at my sides. My head was going a million miles an hour.

"So now everything is thinking you are cheating on your pregnant girlfriend, all the while being with some random girl."

"I am not cheating and Haley is not some random girl."

"To everyone she is, including me."

"Vanessa." I growled. I didn't like the tone she was using. Haley was not some girl I randomly hooked up with.

"I am just stating the facts Brock." Normally I liked Vanessa but right now I wanted her gone. "We need to do some damage control."

"This couldn't wait?" I glanced up the stairs behind me, hoping Haley wasn't coming down.

"No the longer we don't address this the worst it gets."

"Vanessa I am just some baseball player. Why is this such a big deal?" I was no one special but the way this was going it sounded like I was.

"You think your just a baseball player but to others you aren't. It is Hollywood Brock." Yes but I am not apart of Hollywood. I silently added.

"I can't believe this." I pinched the bridge of my nose. I did not except this to happen. Everything we going perfect until now. Haley and I were finally getting over the past and maybe moving towards something and now this bomb has dropped.

Imagine what Haley is going to do when she finds out her face is everywhere and on top of that my ex is saying she is pregnant. She didn't deserve any of this. I was just hoping no one was going to come banging on her door any time soon.

The baby was definitely not mine though. Sarah and I weren't together that long and the entire time she went on about not wanting kids. Something about ruining her figure for modeling. I hadn't wanted anything serious with her. Plus we broke up about 4 months ago, around the time I got my surgery. I know for a fact we didn't have sex around then so it sure as hell isn't mine.

"Why does everything think the child is mine?" I asked.

"Because you two didn't come out that you broke up."

"It was clear as day when we haven't been seen together in 4 months."

"This is how things work on social media Brock. Someone publishes a story, a picture comes out, people speculate, and next thing you know this happens."

"I want it gone Vanessa. The kid is not mine."

"That is why I am here. I need you to come back with me to LA so we can get all of this figured out before it gets much worse. So far Sarah hasn't named you the father so if we get ahead of this we can cut it right off."

I didn't want to leave though. I didn't want to leave Haley again, especially after last night. What if she heard about all of this and things I just slept with her as a rebound or something? I couldn't lose Haley, not again.

"Vanessa I can't just leave."

"Yes you can." A new voice butted in.

Haley's Pov...

"Yes you can."

Brock's and the other lady, Vanessa's, head turned at my voice. The shocked look on Brock's face let me know he didn't know I was there. I had been coming down the stairs when I heard the door open and that woman speak. When I heard the way Brock spoke to her like he knew her I decided to stay at the top of the stairs and see what was happening.

I eavesdropped on their entire conversation, hearing everything from the picture of Brock and I on social media to his ex saying she was pregnant. It took a lot to not march down there and demand what was doing on but I forced myself to stay where I was, wanting to know all of it before going down.

The more they talked the more I believed Brock about the whole pregnant ex girlfriend thing. It may have been awhile since I've been around him but I knew when he was telling the truth or lying, and this time around he was telling the truth.

But it wasn't until his manager brought up that he had a career, friends, a life in LA, that it suddenly clicked. My knees threatened to give out so I slowly sat at the top of the stairs. I was in my own little bubble thinking things between Brock and I could work out this time.

I had pushed aside the fact that his life wasn't here in Port Townsend anymore; it was in LA. His whole life was there now. Everything he has worked so hard for was there and I could not ask him to give that up.

Things between Brock and I could never work. It wasn't in the cards for us and I think I knew that this time around. That is why I tried to keep my distance at first. Brock was meant for great things, while I was meant to be here. And I couldn't leave here.

Just like with him my life was here. I had a good job, I had friends, my brother was only a few hours away. It was almost like 6 years ago. I couldn't ask Brock to give everything up and stay here with me. He would eventually end up resenting me for doing so and I would hate myself for ruining any chance he might have in LA.

So when Brock said he couldn't leave I made the decision for him.

"Yes you can." I came down the stairs swallowing back the tears that wanted to come free at the thought of Brock leaving again.

"Haley, I-"

"I heard it all." I interrupted him. I stepped off the last step and slowly made my way towards him and Vanessa.

"Haley I swear it isn't mine." He started again but I shook my head a sad smile on my face.

"I know." I stopped inches from him. "I know and I believe you." At my words his shoulders relaxed a bit.

"I am so sorry Haley, I didn't know this would happen. But we will figure it out." The determined tone in his voice made my heart ache.

"It's okay. I know you'll figure it out...in LA."

"Wait what?"

Turning towards Vanessa who stood off to the side, I smiled at her.

"Could you maybe give us a moment?" She got my hint and nodded. "The kitchen is through there if you want anything to drink." She looked between Brock and I once more before turning towards the kitchen. Wanting to make sure we were really alone I grabbed Brock's hand and pulled him towards the living room.

"Haley what are you saying?"

As much as it pained me to say the words I needed to say it. Brock didn't need to give up things just for me. I wasn't worth it.

"Brock." I sat on the couch and tugged him down beside me. "You need to go back to LA."

"What?" Taking a deep breath I ready myself for this conversation.

"Brock, we both know you can't stay here. Your entire life is in LA. You literally have your dream job and staying here would mean giving it up, you can't do that. You have worked so hard to get where you are to just ruin it so easily. I won't let you."

"What are you saying?"

"I'm saying...you need to go back home and I'll stay here. Our lives are on different tracks. We both knew this wouldn't last, you were going to leave soon anyways now you are just leaving earlier."

"Why are you suddenly changing your mind?" His eyes flashed with hurt at my words.

"I didn't change my mind, I just realized a few things. Did you really think we could make this work when we lead such different lives?"

"Does this have to do with my ex? Because Haley I swear the kid is not mine and I will prove it."

"It isn't about that. It is about you thinking of giving up your career." I lifted a hand up when he went to speak. "I know you well enough to see it on your face. Your shoulder will be better soon and you will be able to play."

"Haley-"

"Brock." I sighed closing my eyes for a brief second. "We both knew the outcome of this, we just didn't want to see it."

"So you are just going to make the decision for me?" Brock stood up, dropping my hand as if it burned him.

"No I-"

"That is exactly what you are doing. You are once again making a decision for me." Gone was the hurt, now he was angry.

I was making the decision for him because I saw the way he talked about baseball. His eyes lit up like a kid on christmas. And I heard the change in tone when he talked about LA the other day, it was his home now.

"Brock-"

"Seriously Haley? Last night didn't mean anything to you?" Tears pricked my eyes at his words. He thought it didn't mean anything to me but it did. It meant more than he would ever realize. I wasn't saying these words because of that.

6 years ago I let him go and this time I was going to do it again for his sake. He couldn't see that right now but he would. He would soon realize that I was just some plain old girl from high school that he thought he loved, nothing else.

No words would come out of my mouth. I wanted to beg him to stay, to not leave me all alone again but my mouth wouldn't let me. The voice inside of me was screaming at me to say something. Brock took my silence as my answer.

"I got my answer then." I watched as he shook his head, his eyes glossy. Without another word he turned and walked out of the living room.

I stared after him my heart breaking into tiny little pieces. You had to do it. I silently told myself. I didn't deserve to have him here. By time I had gotten myself a little together and left the living room, I found Brock standing there with a shirt on now talking to his manager.

I watched as he grabbed the door and opened it. He shot me a look over his shoulder, a look that I knew I would never forget. It was one of pain, anger, hurt, and I think disappointment. The look hit me right in the chest and I opened my mouth to call out to him but before I could he walked out the door.

My feet moved after him to call him back, to tell him I really did love him but my moves got blocked by a body. I looked at Vanessa who stood there with a weird expression on her face.

"Thank you." I blinked at her words. "He needed to hear that even if it hurt him."

"Just..." I swallowed thickly. "Just look after him for me. He likes to do stupid things when he's upset."

"I will." She placed a hand on my shoulder. "He'll realize you did it for the best." I shook my head at her.

"No he won't." Brock would definitely not be forgiving me for this, because all of this was MY fault not his. I was the one pushing him away.

"He will move on." Those words broke my heart into even tinnier pieces. Maybe she didn't mean it like that but the thought of Brock really moving on from me hurt worse than anything I could imagine. And when he did move on it would be all my fault and I had to live with that.

With another pat on my shoulder Vanessa walked out the door to her car. The windows were too tinted for me to see Brock. As the car drove away I let him leave, just like that. And I knew I had just made the worst decision of my life.
