______

Adrian's little demonstration of power left all the werewolves staring at me like I was some poor thing that deserved their compassion.

Well, good for me I didn't need them. If they thought I would suffer in Adrian's hands later, they were wrong. I knew the alpha wouldn't do anything to me. He could never hurt me, even if he wanted. With words, perhaps. But I was used to them beating me.

"People are still talking," Abe cried. We were standing outside, in the garden, watching the werewolves training.

"What are they not talking about? That's all they do." My eyes were attentively analyzing every movement they did like I was trying to memorize it. After all, I did have to learn almost everything about being a werewolf by myself.

Abe stared at me with concern in his eyes. That man's dream was to find his mate, and it never happened. When we first met, he was traveling the world looking for her. I offered him the chance to be part of something bigger. He ended up being the first wolf in my pack and the energy he wanted to address his mate, he now directed to me, even if we weren't more than good friends.

"Nobody knew you're a female alpha; you surely frightened them. But I thought they'd be dying to get your attention."

I stared at him for a second, before smiling mischievously. "Maybe my face scared them."

"You sure scared me the first time we met. But you were a lot denser then."

"You should smile more often," we both heard. Abe's mouth was open, but he wasn't the one who said it. Adrian stopped by the door, staring at me. "Then people might believe you're not actually a savage."

My lips transformed into a thin line, where my smile stood before. "I'm good with 'savage'. I don't need anyone on my tail."

Abe stared at me and then Adrian. He bowed and left us alone, despite the bitter look in my eyes.

My mate walked slowly across the garden until he reached my side. "You know, I'm curious about something," he started. "How did you manage to turn into a wolf. It's impossible for a woman to survive the transformation." He took a deep breath, glancing at me cautiously. "Until you."

"Why?" My eyes focused on the man training in front of us. I felt his glance on me and turned to him. Adrian's eyes looked confused. "Why are you curious? It doesn't matter now. I am what I am."

"You're just like me now, yet, you hate me."

Maybe it was just my impression, but I saw something different in his eyes. Something else than coldness.

"I hate all of you. You know that." I turned my face to the other side, incapable of sustaining his stare for long. How could I explain what I felt? That I could never trust the creatures, who destroyed my life? Not only my past but also my future, by turning me into one of them, by making me live with a beast inside me.

"You don't hate your beta," he mumbled. Adrian was not entirely wrong, though.

I got lost in my thoughts and only turned to him seconds after. "Don't be mistaken by what I show. You should know me better than that."

"I do know you. I know how untrue you can be. But I also know when you're lying or telling the truth." He glanced at me for a long while, turned around and went back into the house, leaving me with my thoughts.

Five years ago Adrian had met me in the woods. He helped and saved me from myself, and even when I found out he was a wolf, he knew I couldn't ever hate him. Not like I wanted to.
