The perfect gentleman
Greg was first born of the Kingdom Zygarde and per usual, there were many tests and expectations placed on him.
He surpassed them all, except one.
After his debut, when he was properly introduced to society, his mother set him aside to talk to him.
"I am so proud of you, dear, but now that you have already debuted, it's time to find your betrothed," his mother said.
"What? Why?" Greg asked, so confused. Why did he need someone to love so soon?
His mother just smiled gently, "You don't have to get betrothed right now. Just before you turn 17 because we need a suitable wife for a suitable heir and have to train her to perfection for the best of our kingdom. Understand?"
He nodded, determined to find a beloved.
Then, why was it so hard?
Was he picky?
He was the perfect gentleman, observing every girl who fawned at him and simpered saying he was perfect.
He would smile at them and they would squeal. They would ask whether he was betrothed and he would simply laughed.
Nevertheless, he couldn't pick up any girls either way. They would talk to him sure but they would move on to other boys.
He wondered, 'What did I not have?'
Was he plain?
Achievements and looks notwithstanding, girls seem more attracted to other boys who looked more troubled or rugged or that simple air of mystery, like his brother Nate although he himself never noticed.
So dense...
Greg was as honest as if his heart is on his sleeve. But girls quickly grew bored of that as well and quickly moved on before he got to know any of them better.
That held true towards his friends as well. They seem to be polite and nice but they seem to be attracted to others with their own problems in mind.
Should he be picky?
Girls were attracted but not necessarily leaning towards him, and Greg ended up being chaffed by it. He wanted total loyalty, yes, that was the word, to him.
You could say that was what made him picky. He wanted someone to love him, and he can love in turn. They shouldn't wander their attention to someone else, like all those other girls.
However, this is a solid point. He's not a yandere.
He understood people have many baggage, past loves and boy friends, not boyfriends, so he could stand that.
He just wanted someone to pay more attention to him and learn more about him than giving him a glancing side. Though, truthfully, after all this, he wished he could no longer bother...
So, he tried to woo a few girls that interested him but after a while, he knew it wouldn't work. He knew especially when the motives weren't necessarily love. They looked at him but also looked at other things. Like the fact he was royalty and with that, Greg quickly cuts off the connection.
Fine, he was picky. But why couldn't a girl just stay in love with him for the right reason, for Pete's sake?!
Sometimes, he wished life could be simpler. The responsibility was the reason and it was suffocating. But...
Wasn't he good enough, handsome enough to be worth staying over? As an individual mostly.
For the want of being recognised as an individual, he looked at others individually as well.
So far, they were same old, same old. Maybe there was something deeper but they don't show it.
The only one different was Aurora Fate.
When she didn't stand up for herself.
Being so nonchalant.
All during her brief time with Venice.
It sparked interest.
And then, there was Milan.
They... kissed.
It was... a... great feeling.
He was sure than Milan felt the same too.
Ever since, they looked at each other and couldn't help but blush.
They talked more to each other, and he couldn't help seeing new shades of her personality. As she saw his too.
They slowly appreciated each other throughout the week. Even during that party, when he couldn't help but save her.
Then, there was Aurora, who was knowledgeable about romance but didn't want anything from him.
Greg didn't mind that, she was already betrothed anyway.
All the good ones are taken, huh?
But Ro did say something valid, and he had to test it.
He approached Milan wanting to say a lot of things.
"Hey," he said to Milan.
"Hey," she echoed back.
They really didn't know what was going on between them at all but things weren't terribly wrong for them, so...
It couldn't hurt. Maybe this was fate.
"How's it going?" Greg asked, making small talk.
"Fine as I'll ever be," Milan said, looking around at the happy couples.
"Huh?" Greg was not amiss of this observation, "You want to have a happily ever after with someone?"
Milan blushed, "Maybe. But is that even possible?"
"Who knows? Let fate decide," Greg shrugged.
"Well, whatever fate chooses, I hope it's right," Milan said.
Greg clapped a hand on her shoulder and said seriously, "Fate is never wrong."
Then, before Milan could respond, it all went down. The ambush. It was Ro first and then, Greg saw they went to Milan and Alex as well. Greg tried to stop those thugs only to be drugged myself. Greg can only hope that they escaped.
Greg was wrong...
He woke up and saw Milan next to him. He was crestfallen but at least Alex escaped. How about Ro?
"Huh?" Milan stirred awake. Then she saw her surroundings. "OMG! What happened?!"
"We are apparently kidnapped," Greg said.
"Well, duh! But what will happen to us?" Milan was shaking.
Greg felt the need to soothe her. The perfect gentleman, they call him, which was the best for all worlds but... so boring as girls said. The dark side appealed to them better but Milan felt steadier under his touch.
Nevertheless, he hoped he could soothe her worries. She looked so fragile and pure like glass, crystal that no way should she be broken.
"Don't worry. I'm here with you no matter what, alright? We need each other," Greg said, and he meant it.
"We need each other," she echoed, "I am glad you are here in this hellhole at least," she smiled at him. Greg's heart raced.
All you need is an event to trigger it.
Could this be an event?
And will it lead to a romance that he was looking all these years?
Milan softened under his touch and she looked... so... good... pretty.
He really hoped he could know her better...
Milan suddenly sobbed.
"What's wrong?" Greg asked soothingly.
"I don't know. The complete realisation of being kidnapped and the thoughts of what they could do to us..." Milan said haltingly.
"Shh... I will not say it's alright because I don't know," Greg said, deep from his heart, "but know that I'll be there for you."
"Greg..." Milan said.
And he really meant it. Milan has showcased her vulnerability and he needed to protect it. They both had to stay strong.
"You are perfect," she finally said in hushed tones.
"No I'm not, otherwise I'll be betrothed," Greg snorted.
"You haven't found the right person yet," Milan suggested.
"How about you?" Greg asked. It was prying but he desired to know more about his fellow captive.
"Umm..." Milan looked down, "I like Alex."
"Ahh..." Greg said, remembering Milan's interaction with the demon. He waited to listen more.
"But he likes someone else," she said, "I don't know why, but is it because of me?"
"Nah, different people always have different preferences," Greg shrugged. So, Milan like Alex. A lot of girls do prefer the dark side. What was so alluring about it?
A lot of parents wouldn't say that not being bad is a problem, but that exactly was Greg's problem. Girls just seem to be more attracted toward bad boys.
It stifled him.
Milan smiled at him later.
"Thanks, I guess. We both don't have much luck, huh?" Milan said.
"At least we have each other," Greg said, and cuddled her, "One day, we will find the right person, the one who will love us back. All it takes, I guess, is a moment."
"A moment?" Milan asked, blushing a bit under his touch.
But they went no further than that when Ro came to their rescue.
At that point, Greg was practically amazed with Ro. Ain was indeed very lucky to have her as a betroth.
But he himself felt no resentment for it. Greg couldn't waste his time chasing unavailable girls anyway. He was no bastard.
Then, they caught up with some friends, and then... apparently the mastermind.
Why was he so interested in Ro?
All the questions, they were directed towards her. So as the fact of her Pisces Bracelets.
The plot thickens.
Especially when the mastermind turned into the Nine-Tailed Fox.
Then, nothing else mattered.
He was fighting hard along with everyone else.
Then, the unexpected happened.
Milan was whipped by the tails and in crosshairs with the Fox's fire, literally. She was going to get burned.
Seeing her so helpless, his body moved before his mind and he was in front of her.
"GREG!" Milan screamed, looking so beautiful with her worry.
They had seen some shades of the other.
Greg wished to see more.
Maybe be more.
But this moment...
With his eyes drooping with every breath and Milan's crying, Greg whispered that only she could hear...
"This moment..."
All it takes, I guess, is a moment.
And it was all that mattered now, because Greg could never go to the dark side.
He never could get a beloved because of that.
But now, in the final moments...
Maybe he did get a beloved by himself.
Finally...
Then, there was nothing.
