The mole

I opened my eyes to another dreary landscape, but my eyes settled on the unconscious body next to me first.

"John..." I hissed, shaking him, "John... wake up!"

"Wha-what?" John woke up with a startled gasp. Then, he looked around his surrounding with pieces of memories slowly floating into his mind until he became red with anger...

"That bastard thief! Why in God's name did I trust that conniving...?" John then went through a few more expletives as he let out his anger.

I winced slightly. The bastard thief is here, you know?

When John calmed down some, he took another look of his surroundings before his blue eyes finally rested on me.

"What the heck happened?!" John said. I had to refer through Lia's memories. Coming over a wash for a second, I finally could give him a competent answer.

"After the phantom thief left, the organisation zeroed in on us, and we had to fight... in vain. Even with the Duke Silverhart down, we were outnumbered. After you went down, I decided to... sacrifice myself so that the others can escape. But it was too late for us."

"You do that for me?" John asked.

Lia did, because even betrothed, she was quite interested in John. I shrug that off, as myself, I don't think I had bother.

"Well... yeah, hopefully, we will get something useful out of this hellhole."

"You are the best, Ro!" John said and tried to hug her but the chains were in the way.

"Well, if this isn't a lovely reunion," a voice said, and although it's been weeks, I still recognised the voice.

"Murphy. Do what I owe to this honour?" I said sarcastically.

"You call this an honour?" Murphy asked sarcastically back.

"In fact, you have caused a lot of trouble, it will be easier to kill you..." Murphy mused.

"Why not?" I asked, because when they say, 'it would be easier to kill you,' means that they won't at all. For whatever unknown reason.

"Pisces Bracelets too attached to you," Murphy said tersely, "No telling what would happen..."

"Then, why not remove them, cut off my hands?" I suggested.

"Are you trying to torture yourself, Ro? Stop giving absurd suggestions!" John groaned, exasperated by my now nonchalant attitude, but that's just me.

"Hmm... I could do that, but you have no idea... that it's not just physically attached to you, it's mentally attached to you. To completely remove the Pisces Bracelets, I can't just break it off from you, I also have to break the connection with you."

'Is that true?' I asked, particularly to Black and White.

"Yes, which was why I was surprised when I saw the Pisces Bracelets on you," White admitted.

At that, I just tried to get out using my ghost powers, but I was still stuck.

Murphy tsked, "Were you trying to use your special powers? We all know about it..."

My eyes widened. How could they know?

John took the words right out of my mouth and blurted out, "How could you know?"

"You were careless," Murphy said dismissively, but I narrowed my eyes. I have the funny feeling it wasn't that, not someone witnessing by accident, but on purpose.

"You had a spy on me," I blurted out.

"No," Murphy said quickly, but my passive psychic powers could already pick up the lie he didn't bother to shield out on.

Now, I was looking at John, who in turn was looking intently at Murphy, figuring out an escape route.

I decided that I have to use my other cards for that if I can't use my ghost powers.

"So, hmm... how to start..." Murphy said, while taking out an electric knife, one of the most favorite of torture tools.

He was looking at us leisurely, before snapping his fingers in delight.

"Yes, kill the detective!" He exclaimed.

"No!" I shouted, "What does he have to do with any of this?!"

"Exactly," Murphy said, at my response, "It will torture you mentally to witness his death... and feel your own guilt!"

"Don't listen to him. You cannot give in. Everything will fine," John reassured.

"And how?" Murphy kidded, "Because how are you going to escape from here? We are more careful than last time, you know?"

Murphy was now approaching John steadily, knife buzzing with action.

"You were starting to become a pest for us anyway. This will be a two for one deal," Murphy smiled.

"NO!" I shouted, as Murphy raised his knife into the air.

"I'm sorry, but you can't do that," a soft voice answered as an arrow shot out of nowhere jutted out of his neck and he fell.

At the same time, John was already out of his restraints and was shouting into the thin air, "Kaitou Rubin!!!!"

"Are you Leo now?" Kaitou Rubin, my doppelganger, Lia this time, asked sarcastically. This was really a last resort, and the fact that John freed himself proved the effort unnecessary.

"Seems it was a waste that I was here..." Kaitou Rubin's voice floated out. Lia never really liked to be the phantom thief, anyway. Seriously it was a last resort.

"I don't think so," John said, as cards flew out from him to the air above, giving small explosions and dropped the phantom thief.

At this, I thought, 'I promise to let you celebrate my next birthday with all the chocolate privileges...'

Kaitou Rubin looked at me, expression vacant, but she telepath, 'Deal.'

"You [censored]..." John started.

"There's a lady here..." Kaitou Rubin gestured to me, "So if you don't mind unlocking her..."

John scowled and proceeded to unlock me while Kaitou Rubin kept watch.

"How did you unlock those chains?" I asked, as he went to do mine.

"Hair pin," He said, showing to me, "Never underestimate the simplicity in lock picking."

He took his time, but he managed, and as I massaged my wrists, he looked scowling at the phantom thief.

"Do you have an escape route?" John asked.

"Of course," the phantom thief said dismissively. It was from Ezmia that I sent out along with myself to scout out. The advantages of clones...

"Well, let's get out of here, but first..." John said, and proceeded to handcuffed the phantom thief along with himself.

"What was that for?!" The phantom thief protested.

"That's for betraying our deal. So, I'm allowed to arrest you and imprison you later for all that you have done," John stated.

"Hmph, don't need to be so righteous. You had your plan, I had mine. The deal was to help you by getting captured, and yes I did. The deal did not say that I had to follow your plan..." Kaitou Rubin said.

"I don't care," John gritted, "C'mon, Ro," John beckoned me, and with a look of loathing toward Kaitou Rubin, "Lead the way."

"As you wish," Kaitou Rubin snarked, followed by the handcuffed John and me...

***

"Are you sure you know where you are going?" John asked irritably as we walked for a while, "I feel like I have seen that lamp, like 50 times," he said, pointing to a certain lamp next to him.

"Are you being childish?" Kaitou Rubin quipped instead of answering John, "Who knew?"

John slightly reddened. He was usually more mature than this, so became silent and mumbled, "Shut up," instead.

I almost laughed and was at a point until Kaitou Rubin pointed to a set of double doors and said, "Enterez vous."

The phantom thief opened the door, to show some control room. Papers and tablets could be seen everywhere with a huge set screen above the rest.

John sucked in a breath, "Is this-"

"Yep, this is the place where the organisation keeps everything of themselves," Kaitou Rubin said.

"And they just brought us here?" I asked.

"What can you say Ro? There is not one criminal who isn't dumb," John said happily.

Hello, a criminal is handcuffed right next to you.

"Hmm..." John was rummaging something in his pocket and took out a small box the side of a pearl.

It widened into the size of a normal box, and said, "We can store everything here."

That, I believe. A fantasy world with magical adventure game tendencies isn't complete without some inventory box.

We took what we saw incriminating and stored in there, because even if the box could store a lot more than it's proportions said, it still had a limit.

Then, something caught my eye. A tablet that was titled 'Pisces'. My eyes widened and looking through, I saw it was all about me.

In fact, all the reports were stemmed from the Avenger, starting from the day that Nate set his prank at Jirachi Kingdom. It even showed my use of ghost powers!

So, I was spied.

But who could it be?

"Ro, I think we got everything. You coming?" John asked.

I set the tablet aside, rather John not knowing, and said, "I'm good."

"Now, show us the exit," John ordered the phantom thief.

"And what, get arrested?" The phantom thief mocked.

"You already are arrested. Serves you right," John said with relish.

"Even if I helped you..." the phantom thief said in mock sad tone.

"Hmph, if you call stabbing at the back-" John started, but I cut him off.

"As much as I would love to hear you bickering like an old couple, we might as well go," I said.

John scowled at how I phrased their bickering, but Kaitou Rubin remained passive. And once again, we set off.

My mind was awhirl, just thinking, 'Who?'

Obviously, the culprit had to be a fairy, I mean who else, in this organisation?

I racked my brains for possible candidates of the Avenger, but came short. I couldn't think of anyone off the bat, well, as far as fairies I knew, who have a strong hatred for demons, even Duke Silverhart's daughter, Lana.

No, not her. She didn't hate demons, anyway, and off the bat, she never showed anything fishy and never asked once about the Pisces Bracelets.

Milan's obviously out. She loved Alex at one point, and for someone like that, it's impossible to conceive that she was joined up in the organisation.

Then again, why would they let a 7 year old join this organisation, anyway, excluding the time Duke Silverhart asked me to join.

So many questions...

"You are a lot more trouble than you are worth," a voice broke me out of my never ending thoughts.

Standing in front of us was, of course, Duke Silverhart, now in mask, with cronies behind him, one of them, I can see was Murphy who looked more subdued and was sporting punishment for our escape.

"That's us, a bunch of trouble," I quipped, "It makes life more enjoyable."

"That doesn't matter..." Duke Silverhart said, "and the phantom thief is here too? Great."

He was seething with rage as he unsheathes a weapon, a rapier that seemed to be made of light.

"I will personally take the treasures that you took, hopefully by force," Duke Silverhart said, smiling at Kaitou Rubin. To his rage, the phantom thief smiled back.

"Of course, it would be boring if you didn't," the phantom thief said, and Duke Silverhart snarled.

"We will see how you feel about that," he said, and charged at the handcuffed duo, his rapier aimed at the phantom thief.

But he slashed at air as everyone, even John, looked shocked to see that the phantom thief managed to escape.

"Goddamn, this is the last time that I'll ever do a good deed, then," the phantom thief's voice sounded out. Everyone was looking for the source until a goon pointed his finger high up and said, "There!"

Kaitou Rubin looked relaxed and was waving cheerfully.

"This is fun, but there's fun and then there's trouble," the phantom thief looked at us and then said, "If you want to exit, just follow the ashes."

That was all Kaitou Rubin said, before a goon fling a knife toward the phantom thief. It was blocked with one swipe of the whip sword, and hurtled to another direction. Fine ash sprinkled from it.

In a burst of flame, the phantom thief disappeared, and both me and John rushed for our escape.

It was pandemonium later.

The organisation wasn't going to let out without a fight and charged to restrain at us, but the ashes, they had a mind of their own as fire burst out from them... and tied them up.

I proceeded to hit every single one of them with the staff, all knocking out unconscious.

In the process, Duke Silverhart spat out, "What are you going to do with us?"

"Since the phantom thief actually made my life simple, here's a simple answer: You are arrested," John said in triumph, as I went to knock the duke last.

"Too bad, but never," that was not the duke's voice but someone else's.

We made to look around, but they knocked John out and were to do me when I dodged.

The figure was cloaked, and as the fire snaked the figure, it simply dodged out of reach.

I was holding John tightly and asked, "You think you can bring all of them to escape?"

"Only the duke anyway, but yes I can," the figure said calmly.

"Took you long enough, Avenger," Duke Silverhart grumbled.

"I'm your last resort so of course, I come last minute. But better late than never," the figure bantered.

"Just get me out of here," Duke Silverhart sighed.

I dunno if the figure was looking at me for it was cloaked over the head as well, but it certainly addressed me.

"We will meet again soon, that's a promise," the figure said, and with one swoosh, both the figure and the duke himself... just vanished.

I sat stunned. That figure, the person looked about my age. Also called the Avenger, their voice was also garbled.

Meaning they disguised their voice.

I'm wondering if that was the mole. And if so, we will definitely meet soon, but one question stood out.

Who was that?
