When Mae got up, Cai was putting his shoes on. "Put some shorts on. I don't think Master Fry wants to see your underwater."
Mae choked back a gasp. She was in the body of a six-year-old. Why would he tell her that? The thought of Master Fry seeing her underwear was admittedly embarrassing, but that was because she used to be a teenager. Stopping to think about that made her cheeks flush.
She shook her head.
Although, Cai couldn't even say "Good morning," or "I love you, before telling her that?
Mae rubbed her eyes as she sat up. "Morning."
"Get changed."
Cai seriously had no patience. Did he get bitten by an evil spider or something?
"I'll be waiting for you in the living room." Cai turned toward the door. "Master Fry should be here soon."
Was he really going to be arriving that soon?
Mae dressed before leaving her room.
"Morning, Mae," Mary said. "I need to go into town to run some errands. Be good while I'm gone and do what Cai and Master Fry tell you to do."
"I will." Mae smiled. "Have a good day, Mommy."
Mary ruffled her hair. "Have a good day, Mae."
When Mae got into the living room, Cai was standing by the hallway with his arms crossed and Master Fry was sitting on the couch.
"Took you long enough," Cai mumbled.
Mae rolled her eyes. Why was it so hard for Cai to keep his comments to himself?
Master Fry stood up. "Cai, you can work on the activities I gave you the last time I saw you."
"Yes, sir." Cai then left.
Master Fry got down on one knee to be at Mae's eye level. "I heard Cillian said that your back is all healed now. Were you excited to hear that?"
Mae nodded. "Everyone has been fussing about it, so I was."
"I'm sure that was frustrating," Master Fry replied, "but they did it because they love you."
That was true. If Mae was actually six years old, that would be a lot harder for her to remember. She was lucky to have kept at least some of her old memories.
He smiled. "I have something cool to show you, little lady."
Mae tilted her head. What could it be?
Master Fry got a hand mirror out of his bag. "I need you to take this mirror and look into it."
What would that accomplish? Mae did it, anyway. A pond with lily pads. The lily pads had lotuses in full bloom.
"Let's go into the backyard," Master Fry said.
Once they got outside, Master Fry got out some clay pots out of his bag.
"What are we going to do with those?" Mae asked.
Master Fry smiled. "Do you like flowers?"
"They do smell pretty."
He set the pots on the ground. "Can you put some dirt in the pot?"
Mae did as she was asked before saying, "Now what?"
Master Fry held one of these out to her. "Put a seed in the middle of the dirt then put more dirt on top."
Again, Mae followed the instructions.
"Do you want to see if you can use your magic to make some water for the flowers?" Master Fry asked.
Mae nodded.
Master Fry brought over one of the empty buckets. "Let's put the water in here first. I'm sure you don't want to give the flowers too much water."
Mae furrowed her eyebrows. How did elemental magic work, anyway? She had seen Kaleb use it to fight the bad guys, but this was going to be her first time using it herself.
Maybe she could imagine that rain was pouring out of her hand?
Master Fry grinned. "That's it, Maeve! Did you want to see if you can do that again?"
"Yeah." That was so easy. Could it have been beginner's luck?
After he brought her another bucket, Mae did what she did last time.
"This would be a really good thing for you to practice," Master Fry said. "If you can get good at it, you won't have to go to the well as much as you do now."
Did that mean she wouldn't have to lug those heavy buckets around? Mae would love to have an alternative. There was no telling when someone in this world would get around to inventing indoor plumbing.
"Slowly pour a little water over where you buried your seed."
Mae let the water drip a few drops before pausing. She repeated that process until she was satisfied.
"Did you want me to try to make the flower big now?"
"Yep. Give it a try."
Mae pictured the sunflowers she had grown with her original mother, how they had grown over the days and weeks. When she opened her eyes, there was a sunflower sapling in the pot.
"Great job, little lady!" He ruffled her hair. "Let's see if you can do that one more time."
Mae grinned. "Yes, sir!" And so, she repeated the process she had used to grow the other sunflower.
Master Fry got down on one knee. "I'm going to go check on your big brother. You did really well today. I don't want to tucker you out too much, so let's stop here. Until I see you again, I want you to practice filling up two whole buckets with water."
"Yes, sir! Thank you for your help today!"
The master chuckled. "Take care, Mae."
That was an enjoyable lesson. Mae even got to feel close to her original mom. Wherever she was right now, was she planting sunflowers? She had always said they were her favorite.
