Chapter 3 - Ingenuity
When I opened my eyes I saw that the sun was just rising. Everyone else seemed to be waking up as well. System said I should be able to move today, and in two eat solid food. I tried to get up but my legs instantly started to wobble.
I fell but I caught myself on a nearby rock. As I was about to attempt to walk again I was picked up by my mother.
Brianna: (Little one, you must first learn to grasp my fur before attempting to move on your own.)
She went over to the silverback I think to speak with him.
Brianna: (Brutus, I'm going to see how well Devan's grip is.)
Brutus: (Very well, but be careful I smelled a strange fragrance this morning.)
Brianna: (I'm pretty sure that smell is just you Brutus.)
Brutus: (*Chuckle* It may be, but please be careful.)
Brianna: (I will, and when I get back I need to discuss something with you.)
Brutus: (Alright.)
As they walk away from each other my mother spoke to me again.
Brianna: (We'll be going a little bit away from the nest. But don't worry your tough mama would be there to protect you.)
She then gave me a small kiss on the head. I just gave a small nod, she then proceeded to place me onto her back. As to not fall off I grasped some of her fur, and she began to move a little slow to make sure I wasn't gonna fall. But seeing as I wasn't budging she began to increase her speed.
Until she was finally at a full sprint, it wasn't too difficult to hold on and the wind felt nice on my body. Only now did I realize how fast my mother is, we started from our nest but now we were a few miles away. Once she stopped she began to climb one of the tall trees.
Brianna: (Okay little one, this is the final test I want to do. I'm going to jump off this tree and land on the ground. This is just to see if you're able to hold on strong enough if we had to escape from danger. If you feel like you're slipping tell me so I may catch you before you fall.)
I give a small nod of conformation. Once we were at the top I was able to see the rest of the forest we were in. But there was a certain section of the forest that seemed darker, and covered in what I think is a white blanket. I was pulled from my thoughts by my mother asking if I was ready one last time. I gave another nod and tightened my grip on her fur.
Brianna: (Okay, hold on tight!)
She jumped and I felt like I was gonna die, the ground looked so small from up there but now we were quickly plummeting towards it. I closed my eyes bracing for our inevitable death.
...
.....
*Boom*
.....
...
I'm not dead? I open my eyes to see us in a small crater. A few of the smaller trees seemed to shift away slightly, before returning to their original position.
Brianna: (Are you alright little one?)
She began to look over my body for any scratch or bruise, and she began to poke my feet and belly. Which caused me to let out a small giggle.
She giggled as well before placing me on her back again. She was jogging back to the nest while I looked at everything we passed. There were a couple of strange birds with long tails, a catlike creature, a tree that seemed to be covered in the same blanket I saw on that one patch of the forest.
Everything was going well, we where really close to the nest now but out of the corner of my eye I saw something with red eyes shift. But when I looked back it was just a berry bush being blowed by the wind. I did a quick sniff test but I only smelled the fragrance of the berries.
Before I could do anything further we were back with our troop. My mother took me to where the other infants were playing.
Brianna: (I'll be back little one, I just need to discuss something with your father. Lin, could you watch him as well please?)
Lin: (Of course.)
She then placed me next to the other two before going to find the silverback.
Jill: (Hey. Are you our new baby brother?)
John: (What's your name?)
I haven't tried talking yet, system am I able to speak yet?
S.Y.S.T.E.M: One moment... It appears your vocal cords have developed enough to allow you to speak.
Devan: (I am, and my name is Devan.)
My voice came out high pitched.
Jill: (This is great I'm no longer the smallest!)
John: (But your still smaller than me.)
Jill: (Only by a little bit!)
They seem to act like any other siblings I met before. Always fighting with each other about something, but still love each other. Them fighting was beginning to annoy me, so I tried to stand but I fell back on my butt. I think I should stop trying to walk like a person and walk more like a gorilla.
I got up again but this time I used my knuckles to support my body. I waited a few seconds to see if I would fall again, but when I didn't I took a few steps. Okay I'm still standing now let's try a little jog. It was strange having to move like this but after a while I got the hang of it. When I got back to the other two they were still arguing.
I tried to get their attention to stop them from arguing, but they didn't even notice you. So I beat my chest at them
which got their attention.
John: (Oh do you want to play Devan?)
Devan: (Yes, but what's there to play with?)
The three of us quickly scanned the area which didn't have anything that caught our interest. Until, Jill saw something at the end of a low hanging branch.
Jill: (Guys look up there!)
That is a cool looking fruit.
John: (What is that?)
Jill: (Don't know, but what I do know is I want it.)
I notice that the branch is to small to climb but sturdy enough to keep it attached to the tree.
Devan: (Guys wait!)
John/Jill: (What?)
Devan: (Don't you see how broken that branch looks? If one of us tries to climb that branch we could fall with it.)
John: (So how do we get it down?)
I take a few moments to think until I come up with a great plan. They'll both climb up the tree and shake the branch when I give the signal causing the fruit to fall, where I would have made a nice soft bedding of plants and leaves to catch the fruit.
After I run them through my plan I started to collect the vegetation, while they climb the tree. Once I've placed the plants in a circle under the fruit, I gave the signal and they started to shake the branch causing the fruit to fall.
Everything was nicely going according to plan. But I failed to come up a plan if the fruit moves off course. As it was falling a random gust of wind pushed the fruit causing it to fall to the right.
So as quick as I could move I leapt up to catch it. I managed to catch it but my fall wasn't as smooth. I face planted into the dirt holding the fruit above my head.
Jill: (Devan! Are you okay!?)
John: (Hang on we're coming!)
Once they made it down the tree they came over to make sure I wasn't seriously hurt. I reassured them I was fine and that we should head back to the rest of the troop.
They agreed and said I could keep the fruit. As they walked away I looked down at the fruit only to see it gone. Did I drop it!?
S.Y.S.T.E.M: Do not worry I merely stored it into your new inventory. I have made a small poket dimension in which anything entering it will keep the state in which it entered in.
So it will preserve anything that enters it, that could be useful for preserving our food if we're traveling for a while.
As I was about to head back to the troop I heard a few plants being rustled.
S.Y.S.T.E.M: User hostile entity behind you!
I look behind me to see....
