Chapter 11 - The second path
The suns bright rays shining on my eyes had woken me up. As I began to slowly get up and rub the sleep out of my eyes, I noticed Wystan was gone. I quickly got up and searched the area for a sign where he went. My map didn't show any creatures nearby. I then noticed some flattened grass in the direction of the second path. As I was about to follow the tracks Wystan came through some bushes carrying fruit.
Wystan: Master were you going to the second fruit without me?
Devan: (I would never do that, I was going to search for you since you weren't here when I woke up.)
Wystan: Since I saw you didn't eat yesterday, I went out in search of food for you master. Speaking of which I found some non-poisonous fruit.
He then presented five different fruit. One was orange and shaped like a pear, another was spiny and looked like a pineapple, two had green dots all over it and shaped like a squash. The final one had holes all over and was close to looking like a melon.
I hadn't eaten anything yesterday so I finished the fruit rather quickly. But when I was about to eat the one with holes Wystan quickly snatched it away from me. He began to closely inspect it before pulling it apart revealing hundreds of green striped maggots. The strange thing was I couldn't smell the maggots within the fruit. Wystan proceeded to crush the fruit in his hand killing all the maggots except one that fell.
Wystan: I'm sorry master I almost allowed you to eat parasites.
Devan: (Its alright, but what would have happened if I had eaten one?)
Wystan: The singular colored maggots would quickly eat away at your entire body. But these green striped maggots.
He proceeded to lift the one that survived between his thumb and index finger.
Wystan: They will try to make their way to your stomach and intestines. Once there they will eat away at your organs slowly, not enough to kill you just enough to fill them. If your weakening they will stop feeding and even give you nutrients. But once they are numerous they will begin eating their way out of you.
He finished his explanation by crushing the maggot between his fingers. So there are more deadlier diseases in this world.
Devan: (Is there any way to get them out of your body?)
Wystan: I don't believe anybody has found an easy way. But you could see a skilled magic user to extract the maggots.
Devan: (How are you so knowledgeable?)
Wystan: Rufus taught me about the creatures within the forest all night.
Devan: (Who's Rufus?)
Wystan: He's the Land Guardian's golem. Very kind golem as well, he taught me how to launch spikes from my body. Any way master I believe we have another fruit to get.
Devan: (Alright let's go.)
I got on Wystan's back and we went down the second path. I kept a eye on my map while Wystan kept following the path while occasionally looking around. It was eerily quiet no noises no sounds, nothing. There weren't even any creatures nearby.
About a few minutes in the path ended and we came across broken sticks and bushes leading into the trees. The trees were marked with long claws and slightly pushed aside. We began to follow the trail which is probably a bad idea. If this creature was able to push aside a lot of giant trees and make deep scratches,we may not be able to handle it. Let's hope we can at least escape if things go south.
S.Y.S.T.E.M: User I suggest turning around immediately.
Devan: What why?
S.Y.S.T.E.M: Those trees were marked to signify the area you're currently in is the creature's territory.
Devan: Even if we do leave now, the path ended and this was the only lead we have.
S.Y.S.T.E.M: Be that as it may, I still highly suggest leaving immediately.
Devan: Why are you so on edge all of a sudden.
S.Y.S.T.E.M: My job is to keep you alive and not in the jaws of a unknown beast.
Devan: We'll be okay besides we could always find a way to escape-
*SNAP*
Wystan quickly turned to the noise with his fists up. But it turned out to be a small squirrel riding a frog.
Squirrel: You dare trespass on my territory!?
Frog: *Ribbit*
Squirrel: Yeah, we're gonna skin you alive!
As they were about to charge at us a giant paw flattened them sending blood everywhere. The creature that the paw belonged to was a humungous bear. It stood on its hind legs and roared making the ground slightly vibrate. It was about the same height as my father standing, but seemed to be more muscular. Wystan quickly tossed me to a nearby branch like last time. The bear charged at Wystan attempting to bring its paws down on him.
Wystan quickly rolled to the side while morphing his right arm into a blade. The bear quickly changed directions once again charging at Wystan. I took this chance to shoot a arrow at its leg thinking the broadhead could cut it off. But when it made contact it only managed to slightly penetrate its fur. This was still enough for it to switch targets from Wystan to me. It quickly charged at my tree launching its entire body weight. I quickly jumped to the next tree to my right.
The amount of force split the entire tree I was on in half launching it into the tree behind me. The bear stood on its hind legs trying to get grab me with its jaw. I shot my bow point blank into it's left eye, causing the bear to fall back in pain. Wystan took this chance to jump on its stomach, using his arm blade to repeatedly stab into its stomach. The bear began to glow red until it roared launching Wystan into a tree.
S.Y.S.T.E.M: Careful user it seems this bear has a skill called primal rage. It increases its strength and health regeneration.
The bear began to radiate red particles and have blood red eyes. It let out another roar before charging at Wystan who was still getting up. It planted its paws on Wystan's body and began mauling him with its huge bite force. This isn't good my arrows can barely scratch it and the wounds Wystan inflicted are already healing. Maybe my dagger could cut it's tough fur. I began to jump from the trees until I reached one close to them. I readied my dagger and jumped down onto the bears head trying to drive my dagger deep into its skull.
But even with me jumping from the tree the dagger penetrated slightly deeper than my arrows. It roared before launching Wystan's limp body deeper into the forest. I pulled my dagger out of its head and began to stab into it's neck. But with it's full attention on me now it just swatted me off with a paw launching me into a tree. The impact knocked the breath out off me, and my vision began to blur slightly. But the bear wasn't done as it began to maul my arm.
The armor was beginning to break and the thorns on it didn't seem to bother the bear. Finally the armor broke letting it begin to rip off my. I screamed in pain, this was worse than the jaguar attack. Even if the silverback was here he would lose against a bear quickly. My arm began to be torn off and blood began to cover my body.
S.Y.S.T.E.M: User! Remain calm I will figure a way out of this!
After two seconds System spoke again but this time he sounded slightly scared.
S.Y.S.T.E.M: User I'm sorry I don't know anything you could do!
The bear finally tore off my arm and began to break the armor on my other arm. I was beginning to lose consciousness.
S.Y.S.T.E.M: Remain conscious! I will have to interfere myself!
A sensation began to spread across my entire body but this felt different. It burned and I felt angry I felt RAGE.
