A Walk Through The Dark

After some slow casual chatting, Reigen had managed to make you feel a whole lot better. It felt like catching up with an old friend of sorts. You two clicked almost immediately. The small talk had almost made you forget about your incident at school. Almost.

"Would you mind walking me home?" You politely asked. "It's late and..."

"Not at all, it would be my pleasure." You were relieved you didn't have to explain yourself Reigen. He seemed like such a gentleman. "When is your stop?"

"Ahh, this isn't my usual train. I think- two stops from here." You nodded, sure with your answer. "Are you sure about taking me home? I wouldn't want you getting back late."

"I always get home super late anyway." He shrugged nonchalantly and waved his hand flamboyantly. "It's really no inconvenience for me."

"Does your girlfriend mind?" You fiddled with the handkerchief in your hands. Your question was scandalous, indeed. But how else would you know if he was up for grabs or not?

"Well, if I had a girlfriend, I bet she would be pretty jealous right now. But lucky for you, I don't." Reigen's mouth pulled up into a side grin. He knew what your intentions were, it wasn't hard to tell with a question like that. "And your boyfriend..?"

You almost sprung out of your seat. The temperature in your body had certainly risen by a couple degrees. "Ah- I wish I had a boyfriend." You tugged on the collar of your blouse to let some fresh air circulate your clothed body. "Uhm-" You nervously scrunched up the handkerchief with your other hand. "We should get off now." You stood up quickly, too flustered to continue dropping hints and receiving them.

"Alright." Reigen stood up next to you, his composure cool, calm and collected.

The both of you stepped outside of the train in sync. The cool, night air wafting over your body, giving your flushed skin a soothing temperature imbalance.

"Shall we start walking?" Reigen questioned. You nodded.

"Sure."

The two of you commenced your journey with you a step of two in front of the honey-haired male. There was somewhat of a comfortable silence between you both, but you decided to break it.

"So, whereabouts do you live?"

"Just outside the metro area of Salt Lake City." You nodded. "You're still in school, yeah?"

"Oh." You looked down at your uniform, that must've been what given you away. "Uh, yes. My last year, thank goodness for that."

Reigen chuckled. "Not your kind of place?"

"Oh, God no." You huffed, mixed with a small laugh. "It's so... repetitive. I hate being just another student, you know? I want to get out and do my own thing, make a name for myself." You pulled out your pleated skirt. "And get out of this awful uniform."

Reigen smiled, you were kinda like him. In some way. He quit his job and made his own business to become his own person. "Sounds like you know what you want."

"Yeah, but I have no clue how to get it." You sighed. "I'll get there eventually."

"Sure," Reigen rubbed his chin and glanced up at the bare night sky. Man, light pollution really sucked. "May I give a word of advice?"

"Of course." You looked back, grabbing a small glance at Reigen before continuing to look forward.

"Stay away from the lame office job. All your teachers might suggest it for experience, but believe me, it's not worth it, you'll end up getting stuck there forever." The taller man reached into his pocket and pulled out a packet of cigarettes.

"You must have a crummy job then." You shoved your hands in your blazer pockets to keep them warm.

"Used to." Reigen correct, waving his index finger up in the air. "I spent way too many years of my life in a crumby office cubical."

"Careful, you're starting to sound old." You laughed, followed by a small, outraged 'hey!' from Reigen. "But thanks, I'll keep that in mind." You turned around to face Reigen, making him stop in his tracks a little closer to you than he probably should've been. "I really appreciate you- walking me home."

Reigen glanced up to see an apartment complex. This must've been your stop. "Yeah... No problem." He looked back down to you. He was sad to see you go, but you two would at least see each other at the train station.

"I probably won't be seeing you for a while, I think I'm going to take a few days off of school." You smiled, although it was strained. Reigen had defiantly connected the dots between you crying and school, but he didn't want to push for any answers. You both weren't very close after all.

"Then how about we get lunch-!" Reigen blurted as a last attempt to keep in contact. "-sometime?"

You were surprised at first, but your shocked expression melted into contempt. "Sure." You swung your hands behind your back and nodded. "How about we exchange numbers then?"

"Y-Yeah."

You both pulled out your phones and swapped contacts.
And with that you two parted ways with a bow.

Once you got inside your apartment room. You sighed and turned on the lights. You flopped onto your bed, holding an awkward smile that had been fuelled by your afternoon with Reigen. You fumbled around in your pockets and pulled out Reigen's purple handkerchief.

You should really wash it.
