Turning Tastes

"You want me to what?"

Slightly frustrated, Veronica beginning explaining it over again. "We need you to look around in the We'll Get Better app," she told him. "Find out if there's anything suspicious going on."

Michael took a long sip of his slushie, thinking it over. Jared got the impression that he was probably trying to look calm, powerful and mysterious, but considering the fact that when Jared, Jenna and Veronica had cornered him in this dark, sketchy alleyway Michael had let out a nervous scream and shoved something down his pants, it wasn't working.

"What makes you think I can do anything?" Michael finally asked, looking over the three of them. Jared, despite how weird this must look, didn't look away.

"Because you're the one who found out a way to defeat the SQUIP!" Jenna told him. "Even I didn't know a thing about it until I took one."

"Yeah, well, I just asked around," Michael told them. "I didn't really do anything."

"What?" Jenna cried. "Well, can't you hack it or something? You're a nerd, right?"

"I-What?" Michael asked, blinking at Jenna. "That doesn't mean I can hack very well. Besides, the app doesn't seem that bad."

"It got to you, too?!?!" Jared exclaimed, backing away in alarm. The other three gave him an odd look.

"What are you even talking about?" Veronica sighed.

"I-It must have got into his brain!" Jared cried. "Like one of those sci-fi movies!"

"It's not in my brain!" Michael argued. "I mean- Well, I didn't read the Terms and Services, but I'm pretty sure it's not in my brain!"

"That's what a person with an app in their brain would say!" Jared hissed.

"Jared, please stop," Veronica sighed. "It's not in his brain."

"How do you know?!"

"Because-Well, I- Oh my god," Veronica found herself stuck. She groaned and turned to Michael. "Whatever! Will you help us?!"

"Uh, no?" Michael turned away, and started off rather quickly.

"Oh, god damn- We'll pay you!" Veronica called. Michael paused.

He looked back at them. "How much?"

"Uh...." Veronica started patting around, looking around for money. Jared sighed, and brought out the twenty dollars Veronica and Jenna had pooled together for him.

"Here!" he called. What? He was interest now. And, while Jared wouldn't admit it outright, he had enjoyed hanging around with Jenna and Veronica. So if twenty bucks was the cost to do that, so be it.

...That sounded really bad when he put it that way.

Michael frowned, but eventually gave in and took the twenty dollars from Jared.

"Alright," he sighed. "So when are we doing this?"

"How about tomorrow, after school," Veronica suggested. "In the library- in my... friend's house."

"Fine," Michael answered. "Whatever. Can I go now?"

Veronica raised an eyebrow at him. "So you know where my friend's house is?"

"I- Oh."

And so, in a few moments, the date and address was set, a group chat was made, and the four students were ready to finally get to the bottom of their mystery of the We'll Get Better app.

Martha was a little disturbed by the amount of random people in her home; Veronica must not have warned her ahead of time. But still, Martha didn't seem to mind too much, and allowed them to use her computer. Jenna, Michael, Veronica, Jared and Martha crowded around it.

"Why's it so small?" Jared asked, raising an eyebrow at the tiny, pink computer.

"Oh, well, I don't really use it all that often, so I don't-," Martha started.

"Because she doesn't need to use it 24/7 like you," Veronica finished. Jared looked offended, but he couldn't think of a good enough comeback, so all Veronica got back in retaliation was a glare.

"Alright, I'm on the internet..." Michael muttered. He looked kind of nervous, like he wanted to get out as soon as possible. Jared understood the feeling.

"Now what?" Jenna asked eagerly.

"Now I go to... hmm... Google," Michael finally decided. "Guess we could start there."

"You... do know what you're doing, right?" Veronica asked.

"I'm just going through the steps I used to find the SQUIP's information," Michael told her. "First I went to Google, then places like reddit, urban dictionary, Wikipedia, Tumblr, Instagram, Facebook, some other websites, then I finally asked my online friends, who eventually redirected me to the answer."

"...Oh, come on," Jared sighed.

"Wow," Veronica said. "How long did this take?"

"Around, like... a week," Michael admitted. Veronica winced.

"Could you maybe... ask your friends first?" Jenna suggested.

"I mean, I guess," Michael sighed, he looked around to Martha. "Can this run G.T.F.O?"

"What?"

And, once again Jared was on a goose chase. Well, maybe not once again, but Michael and Martha working together to try and download an app and Veronica, Jenna and Jared shouting advice/abuse from the background felt somewhat reminiscing of Evan's stupid emails, and the whole deal that caused.

Now, Jared knew it wasn't only Evan's fault. He was well aware that he had some flaws as well. But, despite all the overwhelming logic against it, he still had a meager hope that the letters and lies would pass over, and then Evan and Jared could be left with something that might resemble real friendship. Unfortunately, everyone picked the exact worse time to be an asshole and tell the truth, so now everyone was miserable.

But, at least this was... somewhat less illegal. They probably wouldn't get in too much trouble if their exploits got out. And there were MORE people to split the blame with this time, so that was a plus.

Eventually, though, Michael and Martha somehow managed to download G.T.F.O on her small computer, albeit an old, very glitchy version, that didn't work too well. But Michael managed to log into his account and find his friends, who were luckily online. Martha, Jenna, Veronica and Jared crowded around him once again and watched the conversation.

"Your name is Reds1?" Jared scoffed.

"Yep," Michael replied. He didn't seem embarrassed at all.

"Oh."

Reds1: Hey

Baseball101201514: sup

BananahSplit!: hello!

BananahSplit!: Webby says hi too

Baseball101201514: thought you weren't coming on tday

"Nice grammar," Jared remarked sarcastically. And he could tease Michael about it, because when he played these games his grammar was pretty good. He really couldn't stand being lazy like that.

"I..." Michael started, but he trailed off, focusing on the chat once again.

Reds1: me too

Reds1: Do you guys remember a couple months ago

Reds1: With the SQUIP stuff

BananahSplit!: yea

BananahSplit!: miksprites better now, if your wondering

Reds1: i saw

baseball101201514: i found this website aout the company a while back

baseball101201514: here: www.TechBehind.com/homepage

Reds1: thx

Michael clicked on the link.

"What are you doing?!" Veronica cried, making Michael jump. "We're supposed to be looking for stuff on the app!"

"Oh, right," Michael realized, his voice sheepish. He moved the cursor and clicked out of the website. The G.T.F.O game appeared once again on the screen.

"Wait!" Jenna exclaimed, making everyone jump. "Go back. To the website."

Puzzled, Michael did as she asked. The website appeared again, after about 45 very long seconds, and glitchy all the way. Jared was sure there was a virus in it somewhere.

The website had a blue and green aesthetic, and it also had a bunch of links on the side. On top, there was information about the company: Tech Behind, and underneath that where a list of the company's projects.

"Scroll down a little bit."

Doing as she asked, Michael saw why Jenna had told him to look at the website again. At this point, everyone in the room, except maybe Martha, who didn't really understand what was going on, gasped in surprise.

Because under Tech Behind's projects it read: "SQUIP (Pill)" and a little under that: "We'll Get Better (App)".
