Prologue - The three till death do us parts
I don't remember when I came to be.
As old as I am, I do remember watching Gilgamesh die before my eyes, sobbing for me to give him back his immortality.
I was unable to.
I watched civilizations rise and fall.
I watched my friends pass away.
It's lonely being immortal.
I watch people grow; I watch people pass away.
Relatives beg me to heal them.
I can't.
Then, when I pick up a new book.
"Till death do us part."
Words form around me, and the line in particular forces itself into my throat. I choke on it, and I fall down with the worst sickness I have had since I became immortal. No one nurses me back to health; I simply live with it.
My sickness leaves me after the plague does.
I say my first marriage vows to a pirate I chose to marry.
"Till death do us part."
A gentle glow had erupted from my kiss, and from then on, he had been invincible.
Nothing could pierce his skin.
He takes me around the world, and for a second, I get to breathe.
"For you, mi esposa." He hands me a book. Gold rim, hand-crafted cover made of wood. It was pretty.
A blank book.
To me, the renaissance was worthless without him.
In 1689, he succumbs to sickness, and I steer clear of people.
Rumors of his wife being an ability user spreads through Europe, and I flee.
Human death was part of life, I had just hoped that he might've lived longer since I had blessed him.
China's a single nation this time around.
I'll stay just to breathe.
Two hundred years pass, and I become Empress for a brief moment.
"I'll give you the world," He presses his forehead to mine. "My father may be against it, but the dowager empress isn't. I'll make sure we happen."
I had foolishly believed him.
"Till death do us part." I had mumbled under my breath after the wedding.
He becomes unkillable again.
My words are a curse.
The dowager empress tries to use me to make her immortal.
The concubines in the palace tug and pull at my brown hair, curious to how a foreigner like me had made it so far in China.
"When I die," The emperor mumbles into my hair one night. "Flee the palace."
The emperor dies, and I run.
Immortality is cursed.
People crave to live forever, forgetting about how foul it is.
People want something they don't have.
Japan is final stop.
An Oiran.
It wasn't by choice.
They had just kidnapped me and sold me into a brothel.
"Ugh, You're so good for me."
I'm not.
"You feel so good around me."
I don't.
"Ah, I could stay here forever."
Please don't.
"Why can't you just become mine? I'll pay well."
I don't lack money.
I run away back to Europe.
This time, I make a mistake.
The night is dark, and my hands are stained red.
I killed him.
A man named Leo Tolstoy.
I killed him.
"War and Peace."
The words latch onto my throat, and I collapse in another alleyway.
The police are after me again.
I don't know where I'm running.
Days turn into weeks.
Weeks turn into months.
One country turns into another, and another turns into a foreign one.
I find myself back in Japan...?
A calico cat on the street.
Natsume-sensei.
I find a cat on the street, and follow him home.
The building explodes, yet I'm not hurt at all.
"What brings you here?"
Ah, an ability user.
"I want to fight."
"You look no older than a woman in her early twenties. Why so?"
"Protection. I want to be able to protect myself."
To absorb. I want to absorb everything.
"Very well."
He lets me stay.
"I'm Fukuzawa."
"Mori."
"A pleasure to meet you both."
I leave when they do.
The Armed detective agency.
"okaa-san!"
Ranpo?
"What are you, a moron?!"
Chuuya.
"Mi-chan~"
Dazai.
"Mizuki."
Oda.
After all, that's what I've always done.
"ODA!"
It hurts.
It doesn't stop hurting, actually.
People pass with time, but people who are killed before your eyes hurt more.
"Please remember me."
"Tell the kids I said hi," I shake in his arms. "Tell them Mommy's sorry."
Oda smiles.
"I... wish I could have some curry," He closes his eyes.
Stupid curry obsessed bastard.
Why'd I fall in love with you out of everyone else?
I sob into his shirt, and I try everything.
"till death do us part, please!"
I don't stop crying.
Then, five years later, I find the book I was gifted missing a page.
Someone snuck in.
The news comes quickly.
The ADA are terrorists.
I stare at the screen, wide-eyed.
...terrorists?
"Mizuki-sensei!"
Atsushi.
"Dazai's been jailed!"
"Are you affiliated with the Port Mafia?"
I stare at the hunting dog.
"I was old friends with the president."
"There were rumors that you visited them often."
"I just brought them lunch." I shake my head. "We were friends."
"We're taking you for interrogation."
He has white hair, and... pink?
He's blind.
I sit in the room, and the interrogation starts.
"Where were you on this day."
"Home."
"Did you notice anything suspicious when you entered the ADA building?"
"No."
"Do you know these people?"
"Yes."
Jouno struggles with me.
It's written all over his face.
"You're telling the truth..."
That's when I realize Jouno can't tell when I'm lying.
Let's play.
"Were you affiliated with anyone?"
"I was in love with the president," I pout.
"Were you willing to do anything for him?"
"How far does your love for the citizens go?"
The look of irritation on his face is funny.
"I'd advise you to answer my questions before I employ other methods."
"Oh, well," I shrug. "You're going to find something very interesting when you try."
Psychological torture doesn't work on me.
Physical only stings.
Jouno is struggling, and not a single time has my heartbeat changed.
I have fun until the commander himself comes in.
"You can leave the room, Jouno," Fukuchi sits down.
"Why'd you steal the page?" My voice is cold.
"It's been a while, hasn't it?"
"Kamui."
The man stares into my eyes.
"Why did you betray me for a piece of paper?"
"Is there a point when everyone will inevitably pass?"
Mizuki smiles.
The Decay of Angels kill Dazai with poison.
Then, it's the world domination they accomplished.
"How does that feel? Mizuki-chan?"
It's the dead body of Chuuya.
"M̷̙͘a̴̛̯͇͊m̵̯͆m̵̧̭̚ó̶͔ǹ̴̩͘"
I smile.
"Join us, Hachiman-sama."
My eyes grow hard, and the feeling of a needle on skin.
"Mimi?"
Blood seeps from his mouth.
"I'm sorry, Mimi."
I killed Fyodor.
I killed Fukuchi.
I ended the decay of angels with my bare hands.
A monster.
I turned into a monster.
The sight of a young child appears before me.
"Mimi!" A young child, my child, runs up to me. "Anything can happen in this book?"
"Yes," I press a kiss to his forehead. "I'll leave you a page. Don't let papochka get the page."
"Yes, Mimi," He looks so happy staring at me.
He was a sickly child, yet he smiled brighter than the stars that shone at night.
"You're leaving me?"
It hurts to leave a child.
"Whenever you want to see me, stare up at the sky, and wish very hard, alright?"
"I'll miss you, Mimi."
"I'll miss you too, darling."
Twenty years later, the paper is shredded and used.
I don't know who used it.
The dead body of a male.
Then it hits me.
I killed my son.
I killed the very child that had defied all of my human biologies.
I killed the very human that was supposed to live forever with me.
Life turns dull.
Repetitive.
The thoughts are hard to suppress.
His voice is even worse.
"How about you write everyone's memories back?" Oda smiles at me. "The book has a prettier world than us."
Ranpo and Poe go over a script with me.
"You're writing his memories back?" Ranpo raises a brow.
"As an apology."
When we finish, I fall asleep with the other two.
A long sleep.
I don't know how much longer I'm going to be asleep.
"Mizuki-chan!"
I jolt awake.
"Has the old man in port mafia passed away yet?"
"What are you talking about? Port mafia?"
"Mori?"
"Dropping the honorific already?"
It worked.
