Chapter 9 - Priceless Tears
Mizuki adjusts the uniform on her body. Tying her hair up, she pins it into place.
"You're leaving already?" Oda leans on the doorframe.
"Yep," Mizuki hums. "No more hellish training for you guys."
"Does that mean I join the ADA?"
"Yes," Mizuki hums. "I already told Yukichi about it."
Oda hums. "How long?"
"I'll infiltrate the ADA when I finish training." Mizuki hums.
"I'll wait for you then," He smiles.
"Ah," Mizuki remembers something. "Before I go."
She presses a gentle kiss to Oda's cheek. "Till death do us part. Just in case you end up in the crossfire again."
Oda turns pink.
Mizuki makes it into the organization with ease.
"I heard you were supposed to be the next boss before your friend betrayed you." The boss smiles.
"Ah..." Mizuki scratches her cheek. "I wasn't expecting my own executive to usurp me with a teenager."
"Then, I'll pair you with one of our best members. Jouno."
Mizuki's eyes glimmer mischievously.
"I heard you don't have an ability."
"I do," Mizuki smiles. "It's just passive."
"May we see it?"
Mizuki racks her brain to steal an ability, and settles for not using another. Her indestructibility was enough.
"I'm indestructible." She smiles.
"Take the bullet."
He fires a gun at her, and the bullet bounces off of her.
"Excellent. Jouno?"
Jouno makes a move, and she takes the blade to her face. It bounces off as well.
"Excellent..." A shitty smile carves itself onto his face. "have you ever... performed services for the old boss?"
"No, sir," Mizuki smiles, shaking her head.
"You're a virgin?"
"Not quite," Mizuki smiles.
"Would you-"
"Not before I establish my position, sir," Mizuki smiles. "I didn't get close with the boss until I was an executive."
"I see," He smiles. "But you'd move up faster if you were with me, no?"
Mizuki smiles the same smile she gave the old boss. The same smile that made him fall hard for the immortal. The smile that gave innocence; A double-sided sword. The smile that wrote a book, the same smile that had seduced so many men in her lifetime. "Sir, maybe I'll show you what the previous port mafia boss loved about me so much some time."
Jouno hears her heartbeat change for the first time that night.
Anger. She seems quick to anger.
The boss laughs heartily. "Of course. I'll look forward to it. Right, what's your name?"
"Mizuki," She smiles.
The two are excused, and Mizuki follows Jouno as he shows her around the base.
"I'm surprised he's letting me teach you." He grumbles. "You seem weak."
"I heard from the previous boss's files that you had excellent hearing," Mizuki smiles. "I also heard you're blind. Oh, and that you're an asshole."
"Your heartbeat skipped when you said you would offer your services." Jouno hums. "All facts are correct. I have heightened senses since I'm blind."
"I'm a pathological liar," Mizuki grins. "That's cute."
Days with Jouno are boring. Though he is bloody and one of the most violent people in the mafia, he tortures people at most. He's just the interrogator with a traumatizing ability to turn into mist. Mizuki finds it mildly boring until Fukuchi shows up three years later.
"Jouno." The president smiles. "Join The Hunting Dogs."
Mizuki stares at the old man.
Jouno had just gotten caught by the hunting dog. Mizuki leans against the wall, the soldiers surrounding her.
"You don't have anywhere to go, and it's either you join or get jailed."
Jouno thinks about it.
"Mizuki-chan. How about you?" Fukuchi stares at her, and Mizuki stares back.
"What's in it for me?" she offers a half-hearted smile.
"Power and money."
Mizuki taps her chin. "Anything else?"
"Surgery."
"Disgusting." Mizuki grimaces.
"If your physical prowess and senses are fine on their own, then we'll let you skip it." Fukuchi's eyes meet hers. "But, the surgery promises that you will stay loyal to the government."
"Don't underestimate the loyalty of a dog." Mizuki pauses. "Surely you have another reason."
Fukuchi stares at Mizuki, eyes digging into hers.
"I was going to recruit someone else, but I figured you'd be a better choice." Fukuchi smiles. "So?"
"You're well aware of the fact that I have affliations with others, right?" Mizuki raises a brow. "Unlike Jouno, I have a way to wiggle out."
"Even better." Fukuchi smiles. "But if you refuse, I'll have no choice but to kill you."
Mizuki thinks about it. "Knowing myself, I would let you try, but... yeah, sure."
"If Mizuki-chan joins, then I will too," Jouno smiles. "I don't have a way out."
"Come on." The two are promptly shoved into a car. Mizuki grabs Jouno's hand, and he raises a brow at her.
"M̶̢̝̈a̶̡͕̒͆͝m̴͉̲̘͆̋̕͠m̵͇͑̔͊͛o̵̯͠n̵̯̝̦̳͋́͘" She mumbles softly.
Jouno doesn't feel anything, and she rubs circles on the back of his hand with her thumb. The familiar feeling of a needle piercing skin carves itself onto her skin. The color blooms on her back, and a white chrysanthemum sits where the needle stung her skin. She can't see it, but she knows it's a chrysanthemum to indicate the person she stole it from. Correction, it's not stealing if it's only copying and pasting.
Delicious.
"Did you just mumble a curse at me?"
"Did you not hear it?" Mizuki raises a brow. She had fully expected him to hear what she said.
"No. It sounded glitched. Trying to kill me already?"
Mizuki nearly smiles outwardly.
"Sorry. I was mumbling something." She smiles. "I'm just worried that they'll have to perform surgery on me, dumbass."
"You've never gotten surgery? How pathetic."
Mizuki thinks to herself.
I survived a surgery in the 1600s... but that doesn't exactly count when they pierced me through... right?
"Nope."
"It hurts, but you eventually build up enough pain tolerance." Fukuchi smiles. "You'll get used to it."
"It's under the government, right?" Mizuki stares at the facility.
Fukuchi smiles. "Yes."
"And if I refuse the surgery?"
"They won't allow that."
"And if I prove by winning against you?"
"Not an exception."
"Not even if I get the government's approval?"
"How will you do that?"
Mizuki smiles. "My ability."
"Beat me, and then we can discuss that." He looks ahead. "Thought i doubt it."
"It's hard to tell when it comes to hand-to-hand combat." Mizuki smiles.
"Mizuki-chan, it'll be hard to beat a man who's known as a war hero." Jouno speaks up.
"Worth a try," She smiles. "You'll figure out my skill from it as well."
Fukuchi smiles at her. "Life or death?"
"Nothing like a little thrill in life." She grins.
"But, with no blade." She points. "I doubt I can fight a blade that can..."
Fukuchi smiles at her, close-eyed, and the voice that comes out is eerie.
"It sounds like you know a lot about me, young lady."
"Well, it's expected when my mom was literally head over heels in love with you," Mizuki makes up a lie on the spot, and she sighs dramatically. "We have a fake sword of the one you wield and everything."
"I'd like to meet them."
"They're both dead." Mizuki smiles.
"Ah?"
"My father was a kamikaze soldier during the war." Mizuki mumbles sorrowfully. "My mother couldn't live on without him, as dramatic as that sounds, and she killed herself while shielding a child from an attack."
"You had brave parents."
"Sure did."
Jouno keeps his poker face, but he's almost convinced Mizuki's lying. Not from the fact that her voice changed, or her heartbeat changed; it was because she was so fluent with lying.
"I'm a pathological liar." Mizuki repeats after a torturing session.
"Huh?" Jouno pauses in surprise. "Is that why your heartbeat doesn't change?"
"I speak lies more fluently than facts." Mizuki hums. "There's no telling what I say is true or false. It comes with being in the mafia. How else did you think I climbed ranks so high?"
Jouno focuses on Mizuki's heartbeat.
A pathological liar, huh. What a genuine heartbeat.

Trivia:
Jouno's blind?? Like, I had no idea until I read the wiki in-depth, and then I had to go back to change when I had Jouno look at Mizuki.
