Chapter 17

I'm falling.

Dune felt gravity pull his body down into a free-fall. Bone watched him intently, her eyes pinning him down.

I'm falling to my death.

He saw the cliff face whooshing past him, and prayed there would be jagged rocks on the ground to kill him quickly and painlessly.

Why must I feel such terror in the face of my end?

Pain struck his back as he hit the water- he cried out as he felt the blunt force wrack through his body. But the world barely heard his cry- it was cut off prematurely as he sunk into the water, swallowed alive by the darkness.

The water enveloped him, and he realised he couldn't breathe. He shut his eyes, barely able to move his body.

I have failed. I couldn't kill Bone. Is this truly where I die?

Die. Die like the weak little runt that you are.

I feel this numbness spread through my body, and a sadness and fear in my heart. I want to rip it out.

No one will weep in your memory, or miss your absence.

I failed everything. Maybe it would be better if I just drowned.

Maybe it would.

...

...

...

No.

...

I have made it this far.

I was meant to die all those years ago when my sister betrayed me, but I didn't. I survived, and killed three of the five pathetic creatures who did this to me. Even if my heart yearns for love, I know it is something I will never find. It would be futile to even try. I must complete my mission. I have made it this far, I will finish this.

She is stronger than you.

That matters not. I will kill her.

Dune watched the stormy waves above him, feeling the sting of the salt water in his eyes. It was all blurry, yet he could see the dark forms of the giant ripples slash through the surface, foaming at the lip.

He kicked, focused on the surface. His lungs were bursting for air, and he did not plan on dying.

Moving upwards, he narrowed his eyes, feeling tension in his chest.

Just a bit longer, He thought.

He saw a flash of light in the clouds above, then broke through the surface, and opened his mouth to take in the biggest gasp of air he would ever take in his life. He felt water lap at his jaws and coughed desperately while the large waves washed around him. His eyes darted around, then locked onto land which he could climb up and finish Bone. With a snort, he began to swim towards it, feeling something big in his chest; like he would not fail under any circumstances.

Dune was still afraid, yet that fear fuelled his anger which fuelled his will. Maybe feeling his emotions again wouldn't be such a detriment after all? He was shaking in his passion, saliva dripping from his jaws as he thought about ending Bone's worthless life. He would be sure to succeed this time.

Bone had seen that Dune was not dead. The fall to the ocean had not killed him, and she had seen him resurface and swim like a fish towards land, being pushed onwards by the waves.

He really, really did have a lot of luck in fights.

Angrily, she stormed towards the slope from which he would climb back on land. She wasn't going to make the same mistake twice; she would make sure that he died and stayed dead. He had killed her friends, he was the son of the raptor who killed her mother, and he was a runt who should have been culled the moment he was born.

She stood at the top of the hill, and watched the dark, dripping mass of Dune slither out of the water, while heavy rain still fell from the clouds. The sound of the rain drowned out the sounds of the two other raptors.

The two stared at each other, both shaking with emotion.

'You slaughtered everyone,' Bone mouthed, no sound leaving her jaws. 'You're a monster.'

Dune stared at her with hatred in his eyes. He could read her lips, but did not respond to her statements. He felt the urge to go in and tear her throat open.

She looked at the skulls attached to his limbs, and winced as memories of her friends flashed in her mind. But those happy days of toothy grins and joyful conversations were over, slipping through her fingers like lucky prey. They were gone forever.

With a silent cry of anger, she ran to him, face contorted and wrinkled in fury. Dune did not move, and the two collided together, falling down to the ground. Bone grabbed his arms and held them down. He began to struggle, trying to resist, but was unable to make Bone budge even just a little.

'You took them all away from me!' She snarled, but the rain drowned out any noise she made.

Dune lunged forwards with his maw open, though Bone instantly latched her jaws around his throat and pinned his head to the ground. Dune writhed underneath her like terrified prey as he felt her teeth sink painfully into his flesh.

But it was all going to plan.

Bone may have restrained his arms and head, but she had completely forgotten about his legs.

With deadly precision, Dune thrust his clawed feet into Bone's stomach. He inhaled sharply as he felt them easily tear through her skin and flesh, impaling her torso. She pulled her jaws away from him, raised up her head, and screamed out in agony, blood flicking out of her mouth.

But the rain drowned out any noise she made.

With a quick movement, Dune tore her stomach open. Blood splattered from her torso, and her guts spilled out. He wriggled out from under her, and pushed her away.

He had the upper hand now.

He quickly grabbed her reddened intestines off the ground, and threw them around her neck. He stood over her fallen self, and tightened her long guts around her throat as she lay below him.

Grimacing, she glared him in the eyes, wheezing desperately, clutching onto her own intestines in a futile attempt to cut through them with her claws- but her mighty strength had left her like the gallons of blood she had lost.

Like a deadly snake, her internal organs constricted and cut off her airways. Even if this was not the case, and Dune had just left her, she would still die- she had been disembowelled, after all.

This really is the end.

She looked past Dune's furious glare and saw the skulls on his body.

I thought I'd at least avenge my friends.

Tears welled up in her eyes. The only one who could stop him now was Fern.

She felt a strange darkness take over her body. Slowly, she lowered her arms onto the ground, and stopped struggling. The world around her was fading, but it was okay- her pain was fading away too. Things didn't hurt so much anymore.

She looked into Dune's eyes, and saw all the emotions swirling inside.

Dune... maybe you're not so much of a weakling anymore...

Her mouth changed into a weak grin, flashing broken and bloodied teeth. Dune watched her intently, but did not loosen the intestines around her throat.

'Maybe you do stand a chance against your sister after all,' She wheezed- and for the first time, Dune could hear her, but only just.

She chuckled to herself, amused by some thoughts which entered her mind. She was dying, and she was afraid- of course she was- but she didn't want Dune to see. She had to stay strong in the face of death, despite the fact that she had failed. And, even if she was afraid, she was also happy. She was finally going to join her friends.

She was finally going to join her mother.

Lightning flashed.

Her smile left her lips. Her eyes went blank. Her body, limp.

Dune let go of her intestines, and they lay draped around her. All movements had ceased, her heavy breath no more.

The rain mixed in with the blood on the ground and the blood on his feathers. He just stood there, staring at her lifeless body in utter silence. With a sigh, he collapsed onto his knees, and fell to his side. Shutting his eyes, he felt exhaustion take its toll as he lost his consciousness.

As the storm raged on, and the rain still fell, thunder shook the world.

(I have nothing. I need no one.)
