Chapter 7: The First Victim

____________________________________________________________________

The storm that had been brewing within Sanaya's carefully constructed world finally reached its breaking point. The thrill of control, the high of outsmarting others—it had all been intoxicating. But now, the game was beginning to spiral out of her grasp.

The first person to feel the consequences would be the one closest to the truth.

---

A Subtle Shift

Maya’s persistence was starting to chip away at Sanaya’s composure. Every encounter felt like a slow burn, Maya’s unwavering gaze like a needle, pricking at her carefully maintained façade. For the first time, Sanaya wasn’t sure if she was truly in control.

But she would not let that doubt show.

Her strategy had always been to keep Tushar wrapped around her finger, to ensure his loyalty and trust. But now, she began to see him as more than a pawn—he could serve as her shield. If Maya pressed too hard, Tushar’s loyalty would help discredit her. He would be her weapon, just as much as he was her pawn.

The Setup

After school, Sanaya cornered Tushar in the library. She had to be subtle, playing her cards carefully to frame Maya without making it seem too obvious.

"Tushar," she began, her voice tinged with concern, "I think Maya’s been acting strange lately. She’s been... accusing me of things I haven’t done."

Tushar frowned. "What do you mean? Maya doesn't seem like the type to make stuff up."

Sanaya sighed, casting her gaze downward as if gathering her emotions. "I know. That’s what makes it scary. I think she’s stressed or something. She’s been following me around, saying weird things. I don’t know what to do."

Tushar’s expression darkened. "Are you saying she’s stalking you?"

Sanaya hesitated, then nodded. "I didn’t want to say it, but... yeah. It’s starting to feel that way."

Sanaya knew this would plant a seed of doubt in Tushar’s mind, shifting his focus from her to Maya. But she wasn’t done yet. Not by a long shot.

The First Crack

The next morning, Maya walked into school looking shaken. There, hidden in her locker, was a note—its message clear and threatening:

"Stop digging, or you’ll regret it."

Maya knew instinctively that it was from Sanaya, but there was no proof. No evidence. Sanaya was too clever to leave anything concrete behind. Maya's heart pounded as she stared at the note, but there was nothing she could do—at least not yet.

Instead of going to the authorities, she decided to confront the one person who might still be able to help her: Tushar. If she could just get him to see what was happening, he might be the key to exposing Sanaya’s game.

"Tushar," Maya said, pulling him aside during lunch. "You need to listen to me. Sanaya isn’t who she says she is. She’s dangerous."

Tushar frowned, looking uncertain. "Maya, I don’t know what’s going on between you two, but Sanaya told me you’ve been harassing her."

Maya’s face fell. "What? No, she’s lying! She’s manipulating you, Tushar. Can’t you see that?"

But Tushar shook his head. "I think you need to back off, Maya. Whatever this is, it’s not healthy."

Maya stood there, helpless, as Tushar walked away. Her last potential ally slipping through her fingers.

The First Victim

That evening, an unsettling tension hung in the air around the school. The following morning, the principal made an unexpected announcement over the intercom:

"Students, it is with great sadness that we inform you of an incident involving one of our own. Arjun Sethi was found unconscious near the cricket grounds late last night. He is currently in critical condition at the hospital. The authorities are investigating."

Gasps filled the classrooms. Whispers spread like wildfire. Sanaya sat motionless, her expression unreadable.

She knew. She had planned everything, calculated every move. Arjun had become a threat—he was getting too close to discovering what Sanaya was capable of. He had overheard a conversation, one that could expose her manipulations, her carefully constructed web of lies.

And so, she acted. A shove in the dark, a fall, and then silence.

---

Maya's Realization

Maya froze when she heard the announcement. Arjun. She had seen him talking to Sanaya just days before. Could it be connected?

Her suspicions deepened when she saw Sanaya that afternoon. The usually composed girl seemed different—nervous, on edge, her usual confidence replaced by something harder to decipher.

Maya walked up to her, determined. "Sanaya," she said, her voice cold and steady, "what did you do?"

Sanaya’s eyes narrowed, her lips curling into a small, dangerous smile. "What are you talking about, Maya?"

"You were the last person seen with Arjun," Maya pressed. "This isn’t a coincidence."

Sanaya smirked, leaning in close, her breath hot against Maya’s ear. "Careful, Maya. Accusations like that can backfire. You wouldn’t want people to think you’re obsessed, would you?"

Maya stepped back, her heart racing but her resolve steeled. "This isn’t over."

---

The Investigation Begins

As the police began their investigation, chaos erupted in the school. Students were questioned, rumors spread like wildfire, and the pressure on Sanaya intensified. But she had no intention of letting this slip through her fingers.

She had killed before, carefully and without leaving a trace. Arjun was just the latest victim in a series of carefully orchestrated incidents, each one designed to protect her secrets. And she would stop at nothing to ensure that her past remained buried.

But Maya was getting closer, and Sanaya knew she had to act fast. The game had shifted. The stakes were higher than ever. And one wrong move could unravel everything.

But Sanaya thrived under pressure. The game was far from over, and she intended to win—no matter the cost.
