Chapter 49 The Heart Wants What It Wants

Jeremy followed Sterling to a huge studio with books shelves, and a desk at the center in front of a window. Two small couches were laying facing each other with a small coffee table in the middle.

"You like vodka?" Sterling asked him while serving himself a glass.

Jeremy didn't drink alcohol, but he didn't want to reject him and accepted.

"Half glass is fine for me." he said sitting down.

"Here you have." Sterling said sitting next to him and handing him a drink.

"Thanks."

Tell me about yourself, your dad told me you study at MIT. That's impressive."

"Thank you, I wasn't sure I would get in, but I did."

" Once you graduate, I could offer you a job in my company. I could make some phone calls and get you a spot."

"Thank you sir, but I wouldn't feel comfortable."

"First of all, don't call me sir. I'm your grandpa, or if you prefer call me Sterling. Second, why wouldn't you like to work with family?"

" I like working hard for my own goals, it doesn't feel right having things handed to me."

"I like this kid, he's so mature at his age."

"That's impressive. Is there something you would like to achieve?" he asked while drinking.

"I am interested in a Facebook internship, it's my goal right now."

"Let me tell you, I have no sure you'll get it. You are a smart and hardworking young man. If you excuse me, I'll text someone to bring us some food. I'm hungry and I believe you too.

Sterling stood up and walked to an intercom, asking the kitchen staff to bring food and drinks to his studio. For now, Jeremy liked his grandpa, he seemed nice, but was still staying alert to anything. He knew his mom was skeptical towards him.

Victoria was standing on the balcony with a glass of wine in her hand, while observing the small stars in the sky. She would have liked to see a wishing star, as it was her dream to always see one, ask for a wish and see if the wish really happened.

" Why are you here? Not enjoying the party?"  Jason asked placing himself next to her.

"I have never been into big crowds, especially with people I don't know." she said.

" You are right, remember when we were dating, and you would prefer going to a restaurant instead of assisting to one of your classmates' parties. Where is Jeremy?"

"With your dad. I just hope he is nice to him."

"Relax, my dad is no ogre, even though he seems like one. He's open to get to know him."

" I hope so. Where's Eleanor?"

" She's inside with the guests."

"You should be inside with her then."

"Things between us have gotten worst. We might be getting a divorce."

"Don't say that. You can't give up that easily. Have you tried counseling?"

"It won't help a thing. It's over."

"Who says that? You or her?"

"Both. And probably it's for the best."

"You don't mean it. Think on your kids, it's going to affect them negatively."

"Nothing can be worse for them than to have their parents together fighting. Have you thought in how life would have been if we married?"

"Stop that Jason, I'm not having this conversation with you." she said shaking her head.

"Why not?"

"It's pointless. Not as if we are getting back together."

"Why not? It could be a fresh start for us. And for Jeremy as well." he said caressing her arm but she moved away.

" I waited for you, Jason. For eighteen years I hoped you would come back, and you never did. I'm not coming back to you because your marriage failed."

"Why not? I am a changed man."

"No, you are not. You are still the same scared guy who didn't confront his father when he found about my pregnancy and decided to walk away. You are now doing exactly the same thing; you are too scared to fight for your marriage and now is walking away. You haven't changed at all. You don't fight for what you want, just run when things get hard. I don't need someone like that."

She walked away from there not wanting to talk to him anymore.

Jeremy had internally thanked Sterling for ordering food. He was feeling hungry but was too  embarrassed to say it. He was focused on eating, it was Sterling the one who broke up the silence.

"You know, I wished Jason would have let me know about you earlier."

" When did he told you about me?" he said putting his fork down.

"Just recently, he told me how he was paying your tuition and how you were Emily's donor."

Jeremy felt betrayed, Jason was probably embarrassed in telling him about who he was. Was he pretending all this time? Was it all a facade from him? Sterling seemed to have read his mind due to his response.

"Kid, don't get mad at your dad. I have got to admit I have never been the easiest person, both your parents can say it. Now I understand why your mom didn't want anything to do with me, and it's a shame because I would have loved to get to know you more."

Jeremy felt relieved listening to him saying that.

Amy was putting on some makeup before JP arrived to pick her up. She was wanting to look her best when she saw Connor. As soon as she received JP's message saying he was outside she grabbed her stuff and got inside his car.

"Roxanne is not coming?" she asked as she buckled her seat belt.

" She's catching us at the restaurant. Excited to see my brother?"

"Sure."

He started driving, and both of them were quiet, until he broke the ice.

"I realize I have not apologized to you. Due to the accident. I'm sorry."

That was certainly unexpected, she didn't think he would say something like that, especially since what happened wasn't his fault.

"You don't have to; it was my fault. You weren't even driving that fast."

"I still felt horrible that night, I honestly thought I had you killed."

"Luckily it didn't happen, so you don't need to be torture yourself like that."

"Destiny can work in a strange way. The night of the accident I remember telling Sean that I have a brother your same age, and you two ended being a couple time later. And on my wedding, I knew I found you familiar."

"You didn't really recognize me?"

" I just knew I saw you before, but I couldn't tell where. Until the dinner at my dad's house, I knew you were the girl I hit."

"Doesn't matter now it's in the past. "

They both smiled at each other and soon arrived to the airport. They got inside where both Clarice and James were waiting as well. Connor arrived with one small luggage, giving a hug to each of his parents and his brother, finally twirling Amy as he wrapped her in his arms.

"I'm so thrilled to see you Sugarpie." he said when he let her down.

" So am I, it's really nice to see you." she said not letting him go.

Paige was wanting to surprise his father fixing some of his old shirts with her sewing machine. He had went out for some errands and she entered his room looking for the clothes she had in mind. She grabbed a chair and looked on the higher part of his closer and grabbed three shirts, and she noticed a small jewelry box.

She opened it curiously and it shocked her to see a ring. It was a golden ring with several hearts together following a pattern in which one was upwards and the next one downwards. Paige knew that it was no engagement ring, but it was for Victoria, and it meant her dad was getting serious with her.
