Chapter 35 Targets
Stacey had Paige picked up by her chauffer, who drove her to Stacey's house. Stacey was wearing a blue silk nightgown and a matching robe and white slippers, she rushed to hug Paige when she saw her.
"Do you want something to drink? I have tea in the kitchen."
"Sure, thanks."
Paige followed her to the kitchen where Stacey served her tea in a white flowered pattern cup. She took a sip before speaking, as she had no idea how to start after the phone conversation they had.
" What happened? Dylan went upstairs and refused to speak to me. Are you all right?"
"He went to my dorm, and freaked out when he saw on my laptop information about Parsons thinking I am transferring. He didn't believe me "
"Are you?" she asked leaning her chair closer.
"No. Jesse talked to me about how Parsons could help me grow, and I visited the school's website to read about it. That's it."
Before she could continue Dylan came inside the kitchen and looked upset looking towards Paige and then directing his glance to his mother. He had clearly heard what she had said.
"So that jerk has convinced you to go away and you do it? The heck Paige, I thought you were smarter than that."
Paige felt hurt with what he said, he had insulted her intelligence and she didn't deserve any cruelty. She understood he was upset but that gave him no right to treat her like that.
" Leave Dylan, I don't want to talk to you. You don't even want to listen to me, so do us a both a favor and go to bed." she said.
Dylan snorted.
"This is my house, and you are my mother to send me to bed. You are the one who should leave."
"Dylan, for god's sake just leave to your room or wherever you want to go. She's talking with me." Stacey interfered.
"Mom, why are you talking her side? I'm your son."
"You didn't even want to talk to me when you arrived, and now you just come here and interrupt her rudely. Now leave, I don't want you here."
Paige felt touched by Stacey defending her, she knew how much she adored her son and yet she had sent him away to protect her feelings. Dylan saw he had no choice but to obey and went upstairs.
"I love him, but he can be as irrational as his father. Tell me Paige, are you interested in going to Parsons?"
"I'm unsure. I am fascinated with what I read about the school. Don't misunderstand me, I appreciate everything you have done for me..."
Stacey stopped her before she could continue placing her hand on Paige's.
"Sweetheart, you don't need to explain me anything. If you really think going to Parsons will help you go ahead and apply. I'll certainly miss you having you here, but I can't make you stay. Neither can Dylan or anyone else. You should think on your best interests."
"Thank you, your support means a lot for me." Paige said hugging her.
"You are welcome, anything you need I'm here for you."
With Stacey's support she felt more determined to apply, and she would as soon as she had free time to prepare herself. She would fill the application, do her essay and everything necessary. She would speak to her father as well. Stacey had her chauffer drive her again to the campus, and as soon as she left Dylan went downstairs.
"Paige left already?"
"Yes, she did. Why?"
"Mom, why did you tell her to apply? Are you really eager to see her leave?"
"Not at all, I want her to stay but I can't stop her from growing up as a person and professionally. If Parsons is what she needs, then I have to let her go. And so do you."
"I have feelings for her, didn't you said once she's the type of girl you want for me?"
"I did, but you probably lost your chance with her. She did have a crush on you but I'm not sure she's still interested."
"How come you never said anything about her liking me?"
"It's not my fault you never noticed, and it wasn't my duty to tell you. You men can be so oblivious. If you excuse me, I'll go to bed. And I hope you don't keep pushing her to stay."
"You are my mother; you should be more supportive with me. Why are you like this."
Stacey turned back to speak.
"If you really want the best for her, you will support her. That's what you do when you love someone, it's about compromise and support. And clearly that's not your case. In fact, it saddens that the same selfish and egocentric attitude I saw in your dad now I see it in you. This is about her, not you. Good night."
Stacey left to her bedroom and Dylan plopped down in the closest couch not knowing what to do. He was upset for not noticing the good girl he had in front of him, and now the possibility of her going away could happen. He was feeling angry, but not towards Paige or her mom, but towards Jesse, who was the one who initiated everything. He would be sure to tell him a piece of his mind whenever he saw him.
Dana and Amy were having lunch together, Dana had told her that she had great news and wanted to share them with her. Dana went to pick her up at her aunt's house and went to have lunch at a buffet restaurant. Amy noticed how excited Dana was, as much as she tried to hide it. They payed at the entrance and grabbed a plate to serve themselves food.
"So, what's your big news?" Amy asked grabbing steamed vegetables.
"Liam and I are official. We are a couple," Dana answered with a huge smile.
"That's great, congrats."
"I know, he's an amazing guy. He's so artistic, that makes us click." Dana said serving herself some chicken.
"Yeah, the painter and the poet. You make a good duet for sure."
"He asked me if I could give him one of my poems to paint."
"That sounds nice. Are you doing it?" Amy asked as they sat down to eat.
"I want to, I really do, but I am private with my works. The only person who I shared my poems with was Jeremy. What if Liam thinks they suck?"
"Don't be ridiculous, he wants to read your poems because he wants to get to know you more. That's it."
"I guess you are right. By the way, Self-defense classes start next week. Are you joining me?"
"Yes, I want to know how to defend myself and not only depend on pepper spray."
"Smart choice."
They were eating and talking at the same time, when they finished Dana drove to a bakery shop to buy a cake for her parents while Amy picked something for her aunt and cousin. She wanted to make it clear for Peter that she wanted to be in peace with him and not fight. She bought two slices of chocolate cake, and after they payed Dana drove her to Aunt Beth's house, and placed the cake in the fridge. She went upstairs to look for Peter and tell him about the cake, but she saw him moving her stuff into another room.
"What are you doing? Leave me stuff." she said grabbing her clothes and wanting to take it back, but he stopped her.
"I will sleep in my brother's room from now on. Grab your crap now."
"You can't do this; these are my things. And I pay rent, unless Aunt Beth says I change room you don't order me around."
"What happened now?" Aunt Beth said going downstairs. " It's the second time I come, and I hear you kids arguing."
"Peter is moving my things to another room."
"For God's sake, Peter, can you just leave your cousin alone? Take her things back to her room." she said pointing to the room. "And I told you before not to touch her stuff. Have some respect for her."
"No, she doesn't deserve to get the biggest room. I'm your son, why do you treat her better?"
"Stop being so dramatic, you really need to grow up. By the way, have you been looking at the job advertisements I left at the table?"
"You are being unfair just because she's a charity case here. Again."
"Hey, stop it. I'm no charity case." Amy said while shoving him.
"Yes, you are, Little Orphan Annie. It's not my fault your parents are dead, and no one loves you. You are a nuisance and should just leave."
Next second Aunt Beth slapped Peter, leaving her mark on his cheek. He just caressed his cheek and looked dumbfounded at his mother.
"I won't let you talk like that to her. What you said is horrible, not only you are disrespecting her, but my sister's memory as well who was your aunt. And her husband. I want you out of here now."
"But I don't have anywhere to go, you can't just kick me out."
"Yes, I can. This is my house, and I won't let you act like this." she took out her wallet and handed him some bills. "You can pay a hotel with this. What you do next is your problem. You can sleep on a park bench for all I care."
"Jeez mom, you can't be serious."
" I am, I expect you to be out from here in an hour. I'm very disappointed in you."
Peter opened his mouth to protest but didn't say anything. He just got inside his room and shut the door. Aunt Beth wrapped her arms around her niece.
"I'm so sorry Peter was so rude to you; I don't know what's got into him. It's no problem to have you here, in fact I wish I would have been nicer to you and your brother when you lived here."
"Thank you. I love you."
"I love you too, my girl. Come eat dinner with me, I brought food."
Amy wrapped her arm around her aunt as they went downstairs. Thirty minutes later Peter left with the same luggage he arrived.
Sam Anderson, "The Boss", was a twenty-seventh-year old man with black hair and green eyes, the former owner of the Amphibian and Reptile Lab, which he no longer had as it had been destroyed and due to the accident, that happened two years ago and caused a group of students from North Mackenzie High School to be hospitalized, he had lost everything. He knew from a reliable source that seven of those former students had some sort of superpowers and since then his interest was to have them together and try to understand why they were affected. He looked at the bulletin board he had on the wall, containing the pictures of the targets with the aliases he had given them. Luckily for him he had a fascination with everything related to superheroes: comics, cartoons, movies and knew well how to name them.
Jeremy Price " Charles Xavier"
Paige Stewart " Jennifer Sparks"
Amy Wilkes "Violet Parr"
Helen Norton " Melter"
Jonah Parker " Superman"
Brad Coleman "Flash"
Trent Jeffries "Wonder Man"
A knock on his door was heard, and seven tall burly guys dressed in black entered making a row in front of him.
"Gentlemen, I have called you here because I consider you the best, and I'll be asking you to check on the seven former Mackenzie students who to my knowledge gained superpowers, and since Christmas Break is soon, you'll be watching them and on the right moment you'll all bring them to me. I'll give you each a copy of the dossiers I have, study them and be sure not to be reckless enough to be caught. Remember to call them by the aliases I give you. It will make your work easier."
He called all his men until each of them had a dossier, who started reading them as they went out, except for one of them and stayed.
"How can I help you, boss?"
" Jones, I need you to check on your target specifically. I have a special interest in her. Anything you got on her you tell me."
"Sure boss."
Jones left and Sam looked once again at the pictures. He smiled as he touched Helen's photo with his thumb. With no doubt she was a gorgeous girl.
