Chapter 31 Puzzled
Sean picked Amy at his aunt's house and rushed to the hospital where Dana was, as soon her father called them to tell them the news about her being attacked. As they entered the room Dana was in her bed sleeping while her mother was sitting next to her holding her hand.
"Thank you, guys, for coming." she said giving each a hug.
"We are here for anything you need. What happened?" Sean asked letting her go.
"She went jogging as she normally does. Usually, it takes her twenty to thirty minutes, and she comes back. But after a while she didn't come back. I opened the door to look for her and I found her laying on the lawn."
"I can't believe it." Amy said looking at her friend. "What did the doctors say?"
"She's fine, she has no signs of sexual or physical abuse. But she was injected with something that made her unconscious. That's why she has a mark on her neck. We contacted the police as well; they are doing research on who could have done this to her."
" Marissa, is there something we can get for you? Or if you want to go home and rest, I have no issues staying. And neither does Amy."
"I would like to go home and take a shower. I'll be right back."
"Go ahead, we'll stay here and keep you informed." Amy assured her.
"Thank you, guys. Walter be back as well, as he went home to change clothes."
"I'm going to the cafeteria; do you want something?"
"Whatever you pick for you is fine for me, thanks. "
Both Marissa and Sean left the room, Amy used the moment to get closer to her friend. She examined her neck and noticed the mark of the syringe, making her wonder who did this to her as she noticed Dana was wearing her gold locket. Dana was someone friendly, she was not someone who had enemies and from what her mom shared it seemed to have been a stranger. She had no idea what to think. Amy had a chat group with her friends since their senior year at Mackenzie and decided to tell Paige and Jeremy about this incident.
A: Dana is at the hospital. She was attacked and made unconscious, but nothing bad happened to her. She's recovering and I as soon as I know more, I'll inform you.
Amy sighed. She was trying to find the logic to what happened, but nothing made sense. She turned her head as she felt she was being observed and a male nurse which she could barely see quickly passed by. Seconds later Sean came inside with two cups of coffee and two sandwiches in his hands.
"Is everything all right?" he asked looking back.
"Yes, everything is all right." she said grabbing one sandwich and a coffee.
One of the same men who had abducted Dana got out from the hospital wearing the nurse uniform and entered quietly into the same black van they had taken her. His friend was on the driver seat smoking and turned to him.
"So, is the girl ok? We need to inform the boss." he said huffing the cigarette outside the window.
"Yeah, and not only that. The girl who becomes invisible was inside. We confused her with her friend."
"We? This is all on you. We followed the wrong girl because of you since you were so sure it was her. Are you sure it was this girl?" he said taking his phone and zooming a picture of Amy.
"One hundred percent, it was her. I'm sure."
"You better be, I won't pay for your mistakes. I'll text boss to tell him we'll stay here and wait for her to go out and check where she lives exactly. That way will be easier to track and check on her."
He took out his phone and wrote a text message as the other guy opened a can of beer.
Stacey asked her driver to take her to a nice restaurant called The Golden Truffle, judging by the expensive decoration the place had like the elegant chandeliers hanging from the roof and paintings on the walls it was certainly not a place everyone could enter even if they wanted. It had a selected number of clients with no doubt. The hostess greeted Stacey with familiarity and sat them next to a small fountain located outside.
"Order whatever you want, It's on me." Stacey sitting down and looking at the menu.
"Thanks Stacey." Paige answered shockingly looking at the prices.
"You're welcome. Is it me, or do you seem a bit distracted? If Dylan did something to upset you, tell me so I can ground him."
"Not at all Stacey, he gave me back my sketchbook. And apologized for not believing me when I told him about Lucy."
A waitress came to take their order and when she was done, she left.
"Oh, I thought something was bothering you because Dylan said something rude or uncomfortable to you. I love my son but he tends to place his foot on his mouth a lot." she said sipping from her water.
"Can I trust you something? As a friend?" Paige asked placing her hands together.
"Absolutely, I want you to think of me not only as a boss. As a friend as well."
"I don't know how to approach Jesse. He recently told me he has a romantic interest in me."
"What happened afterwards?" Stacey asked moving her chair closer.
"He kissed me, and it was my first kiss."
"Was it consented? "
"He took me by surprise but apologized for doing it. He's a sweet and charming guy, but I don't feel any romantic interest in him. He was still a gentleman when I told him I don't return his feelings."
"It's understandable, you can't force yourself to love someone. It has to be natural and effortless. Let me give you some advice, always use your head when taking decisions."
" What do you mean?" she asked interested.
The waitress brought their food and served wine pausing the conversation, when she left Stacey spoke.
"I'm sure you have heard the expression that says how you need to listen to you heart concerning love decisions. I think it's stupid, the function the heart has is to pump blood around the body, but it has nothing to do with taking decisions. Metaphorically and literally. Romanticism is lovely, but it can't control us totally otherwise it makes us take dumb decisions."
"That's deep, Stacey."
"Thank you, I have considered writing a book someday."
"I would buy it for sure."
"Don't be silly, I would give you a free copy. My point is I understand why you feel the way you do; I look at Jesse and if I was your age, I would definitely make a move on him. Just don't think about it too much and get to know him better. Time will tell if you develop other feelings for him.If you don't, it's all right."
"Thanks Stacey, I have not had much experience with guys and talking with you has helped me."
"For anything you need. I propose a toast to you, a talented and beautiful young lady who will have success in everything." she said raising her cup of wine.
Paige clinked with her cup containing water. After two hours Stacey drove to the campus where Paige thanked her again for the ride and dinner. She was entering her dorm when her phone started ringing and saw it was Jeremy.
"Hello Jeremy, how are you?"
" I wanted to ask if you are fine, considering what happened to Dana."
"What happened to Dana?" Paige asked concerned.
" Amy sent to the group chat she was attacked."
"What happened? I was having dinner with my boss, and I haven't checked my phone."
"She was jogging last night when someone injected her with some drug that made her pass out. She's at the hospital and she's fine. But from what Amy told me there are some inconsistencies in the story and make doubt it was a coincidence."
"Like what?"
"It wasn't a robbery. Dana had a gold locket around her neck, and it wasn't taken away, and if she was drugged it was because whoever did it wanted to abduct her. But her mom found her passed out on their garden lawn later. Why would someone try to abduct a girl and then return her to her home? It makes no sense."
"I get your point. Clearly, she was being followed if they knew were she lived. I have seen in documentaries serial killers abduct their victims to abuse them or kill them. Maybe both. But that was not the case with Dana if she was taken back. Thank god."
"I know, I told Amy she needs to be careful. So do you, don't hesitate in using your abilities."
"Thanks. By the way, now that we are talking about our abilities, have you had any strange events with them lately?"
"What do you mean?"
"Some days ago, I accidentally made light bulbs explode and the shards cut a girl's face. And the night before I made other light bulbs flicker. On both occasions it happened involuntarily; I didn't mean to make it happen."
"Were you upset or angry?"
"Yeah, the same girl I'm telling you stole my sketchbook and presented one of my works as her own. Why?" she asked crossing her legs on her bed.
"Something similar happened to me on Thanksgiving Break. My mom and I went to Jason's house for the holiday, I heard Steven's thoughts, and he was disrespecting my mom. and I was so upset I was wishing his face was planted on the salad. And it happened. Next second he had vegetables all over his face. Our emotions seem to have a part as well on how our abilities work."
"That's an interesting perspective, I didn't think about it before. Thanks. And I'm sure your half-brother deserved what happened to him."
"Same with that girl you told me about. What she did was really low. Anyway, I just wanted to ask you to be careful. It's late and I'm sure you want to get sleep. Stay safe and we'll keep in touch."
"Thanks Jeremy, you too. Your birthday is coming soon, I'll do my best to have you something delivered."
"You don't have to, but thanks. Good night."
Both hanged at the same time. As Paige got ready to go to bed, she couldn't help thinking in what happened to Dana. It was all strange and with no explanation. She was hoping Dana would be all right, and nothing similar happened to anyone close to her. Jessica was still not back and was hoping she would be. She went to bed after writing a reminder on her phone to call Dana's parents and check on her.
