Chapter 28 Saying It Aloud
Jesse had prepared and elaborated the menu for that night to impress Paige, he had chosen his ingredients carefully and followed all of the instructions of the recipe he learned. He was dining with her, but the night didn't go as well as he had planned. Unfortunately, Paige was not feeling well, as she had shared him how another girl had stolen her sketchbook, and he was trying his best to cheer her up.
"Don't worry Paige, if you explain everything to Stacey, I know she'll trust your word." he said placing his hand over hers.
"It's just, I feel so stupid right now. I trusted Lucy and she stole my work. I feel like hitting her when I see her." she said cleaning her tears with a napkin.
The lights started flickering alarming Jesse and excused himself to check them. Paige knew it was because of her ability, and it was the first time her emotions caused something like this, causing her surprise as whenever she wanted to use it, she would use her hands. She tried calming down, and after some seconds everything came back to normal.
"I wonder why the lights flickered that way, good thing it got fixed, otherwise I would call the janitor." he sat down and turned his attention to Paige. "I got an idea, why don't we go together tomorrow to her office and explain to her what happened?"
"Don't you have an audition tomorrow?" she asked.
"Don't worry about that, I want to support you. Everything will be all right."
"Thank you. I'm sorry for ruining your night with my whinings."
"Don't say that I told I would always be for you. And I meant it. Want some dessert? I prepared souffle."
"Sounds great, thanks. "
"Wait until you try it. " he said standing up to the kitchen and coming back with two chocolate souffles, each with one spoon at the side.
When they finished eating, he drove her back to the campus and walked her to her dorm, even though she insisted it wasn't necessary. They arrived at her room, where Dylan was waiting outside.
"Hey Paige, I heard your voicemail. Can we talk? Privately. " Dylan asked when seeing Jesse.
"I'll text you tomorrow. Good night. " Jesse said kissing Paige on the cheek and leaving.
" Did you speak with Lucy?" Paige asked.
"I did, and she said she didn't take your notebook."
"And you believed her?"
"She would have no reason to lie to me. Couldn't you have left it at the restaurant, or any other place?"
"Dylan, I had it at the restaurant. It disappeared after she hugged me, and she was hiding her hands behind her back. She took it."
"That makes no sense, she has no reason to take your sketchbook."
"She has, she asked for help in designing the wedding dress your mom requested. And let's be real, kindergarteners could draw better than her."
"I understand you're upset, but please don't disrespect Lucy. She's my girlfriend."
In that moment she understood she was wasting her time with time, because Lucy was his girlfriend, he would defend her no matter what.
"Good night Dylan, just let your precious girlfriend know I'll tell Stacey everything. "
"Paige please... " He started but she closed the door quickly not wanting to listen to what he was going to say.
Just as promised Jesse texted her next morning he would pick her up, at seven. It was a good hour for her, not as if she really could sleep that night and woke up at six. He waited for her outside the campus and greeted her when she came inside the car.
"Hey, I made a stop and brought you coffee and a bagel." he said pointing at a brown bag.
"Thanks, did you eat already?" she asked before taking a bite.
"I'm good, let's talk to Stacey and tell her everything."
They arrived at Stacey's workshop, where they started looking for Stacey, they found her talking to one of her assistants and gave her attention to Paige when she saw her.
"Paige, why do you look so somber? Is everything all right?" she asked surprised.
"No, I need to talk to you." Paige answered nervously.
"Sure, come to my office. Are you coming too?" she asked Jesse.
"Only if Paige prefers it that way."
"Yes, please. " Paige answered quickly.
They both sat inside, and Stacey offered them something to drink.
"I'm good, thanks. I need to tell you I had my wedding dress sketch, but Lucy stole it. I saw her yesterday for lunch and stole my sketchbook. I know it was her because after seeing I didn't have it with me."
" Lucy did come yesterday to show me an idea she had. " she answered looking some documents on her desk and showing Paige her sketch, which had not only been ripped from her notebook but the lower part where her signature was located was gone.
"That's mine, she ripped it off. " Paige exclaimed.
"I believe you Paige, I really do. I know you and her, and I know she would never be able to do something as good. But do you anything else that can proof she stole it from you? I would love to confront her, but I need something stronger to have the little bitch pay for what she did."
"No." Paige said sadly shaking her head.
"Stacy, at what time did Lucy bring you the sketch yesterday?" Jesse asked moving forward.
"Around five, why?"
"I have proof the sketch belongs to Paige, I have a picture that proves it. " he said taking his phone out from his jean pocket.
He showed her the same picture he took of her with her sketch inside his car when he dropped her at campus. Paige didn't even remember that picture, she was amused with his quick reaction.
"I took the picture at ten- thirteen am, as you can notice here below the picture info. She was finishing the sketch on my car."
Stacey gave a quick glance to the sketch and then at the picture before talking her phone and dialing a phone number.
"Dylan, tell Lucy to come to my office now. And you should come as well, you need to listen to what I'll say to her. "
Fifteen minutes later Lucy entered with Dylan holding her hand to Stacey's office, she entered with a huge smile, but it disappeared when she saw Paige waiting as well for her.
"Lucy, I have called you here to tell you I have never liked you for my son. And now I dislike you even more after finding out you are a conniving thief."
"Stacey, this is ridiculous... " Lucy started but she was interrupted.
"Stop it. I know you stole Paige's sketch. And that's something low, even for you. "
"Mom, give her a chance to defend herself." Dylan interfered.
" Look son, I understand you want to defend her because she's your girlfriend. But I have proof to accuse her of being a big fat liar. Jesse, may I have your phone please?"
"Sure. Here." he said handing it to her.
Stacey had the phone in her hand showing it to both her son and Lucy while on her other hand she had the sketch leveling both at the same height for them to see it.
"This picture was taken before you brought the sketch to me, you stole it and presented it as yours. "
"This is a lie; I don't need to stay here and be falsely accused. This girl can't accept I'm better than her in something and is trying to make me you look bad. "
"Excuse me? You the heck do you think you are to be talking of me that way? " Paige angrily standing up.
The roof lamp Stacy had in her office had three light bulbs and the three of them exploded causing shock in everyone present. Some glass shatters fell on Lucy causing a small cut on her right cheek.
"What the heck was that?" Dylan said looking upward.
"I'll have maintenance check that later. Either way, Lucy, I want to let you know I don't want to see you ever again here. You are a just a leech who sucks my son's life and has no morality. Get out of here." she said pointing to the door.
"It doesn't matter, Dylan loves me no matter what and you can't separate us. Right babe?" she said directing her attention to Dylan.
"No, Lucy. I believed in you, and you have just proved how wrong I was. I don't want anything with you. Leave me alone."
He left the room and Lucy followed him while trying to convince him not to dump her. Her voice stopped being listened after a while.
"Now that everything is settled, I'll have my people start working on your dress Paige. I'm sure the client will love it, and of course the credit is all yours. And I'll prepare you a check. If you excuse me, I have work to do. I guess you may want to celebrate somewhere." she said winking an eye.
"Thank you so much." Paige said to Jesse when they got into the car. " I owe you big. "
" You're welcome, Paige. I'm just glad everything is clear."
"You had my back since the beginning, you are amazing. " she said kissing him on the cheek.
She was moving back to her seat when he came closer to her and kissed her on her lips, causing her to startle. She had no idea what to do, and she opened the door and left. Jesse did the same and chased her.
"Paige, come please. I didn't mean to upset you. Can you please talk to me?"
"About what exactly? How you kissed me a while ago?" she said stopping and facing him.
" About why you seem so repelled with me. You know how I feel about you, and I try my best to win your heart. Just tell me what to do and I'll do it. "
" It's not you Jesse, I mean it. " she whispered.
"Then what is it? I know you have some sort of secret power or something like that, but I really don't care about it. I just want to be with you. "
"What do you mean?" she asked softly not believing what he just said.
" I noticed twice that yesterday at my place and today at Stacey's office strange things happen with the electricity working, and on both occasions you were upset. The first time was a coincidence, but the second time confirms it. Am I wrong?" he said being face to face.
Paige was speechless. Not only he was good looking and a talented cook, but smart as well discovering her deepest secret. She wanted to deny everything and tell him he was crazy thinking that, but something inside her stopped her and she couldn't lie as much as she wanted.
" No, you are right." she said whispering and looking down, but he grabbed her chin and made her look at him.
" Thank you for being honest."
She let go of him and tried getting away, but he stopped her and gave her another kiss.
" I'm sorry if I have offended you kissing you, it was never my intention. But I just want to show you much I want to be with you since words don't seem enough. And don't worry, your secret is safe with me." he said resting his forehead on hers.
Amy arrived at the address Sean gave her, it was hotel with seemingly enough space for the number of guests the bride and groom planned to have. Hannah hugged her the instant she saw her and told her how during the weekend she would need her so her measurements for the bridesmaid dress would be taken. She received a phone call from her parents and said goodbye, meanwhile Sean took his sister for dinner at a Mexican restaurant.
"How have you been?" he asked when they were seated.
" I broke up with Connor. "
"Why? What happened?" he said getting closer to her.
"Distance happened. I just never thought it would affect us that much."
" Aims, are you sure you took the right decision?"
" Why would you say that?"
" You seem too affected; I'm not saying you are wrong just that ending a relationship is a huge decision to make."
" I do miss him, and I got mad at him the day I left since he was going to take me to the airport, but didn't since a friend called him and he went look for her."
" Do you think he has feelings for her?"
A waiter approached them to take their orders and left.
" No. But I had the impression she has feelings for him. "
"Did you tell him that?"
"No. Do you think I should have told him?" she said sipping her drink.
"It certainly helps to be honest and not keep things inside. Otherwise, it slowly rusts you in the inside."
His words left her thinking. They enjoyed the rest of the meal, and as soon as she arrived at her aunt's house, she dialed Connor's number hoping he would answer. She heard his voice on the other side.
" Hello Amy."
It felt so strange for her to listen to him call her by name and not Sugarpie anymore, as if she was another person to her.
"Hi, I hope I'm not interrupting you in any way. I have to tell you something important."
" I do want to hear you, but do you mind if we skype? It's not the same on the phone and I want to see your face."
" Sure, is it okay in ten minutes?"
" Absolutely."
They both hanged the phone and she turned on her laptop. As she was logging on her account, she was hoping he would listen to her and give her another chance. Talking with Sean made her realize she rushed into breaking up with him and missed him dearly.
