Chapter 27 The Thief

Amy was on the phone with Dana, checking on their lives and the latter was hoping her friend was feeling better after her breakup with Connor. She knew by experience breakups were tough and was hoping her friend would feel well.

" Want to come to my house? We can watch a movie, while we get a mani pedi. I got new nail polish. "

"Sounds great, I'll arrive soon."

Fifteen minutes later she was Dana's house, who directed her to her own room, where cushions were placed on the floor, with several nail polishes lined next to two bowls of snacks containing popcorn, chips and almonds.

"What movie do you want to watch?" Dana asked grabbing a remote control.

"Anything is fine by me. "

Both girls watched a scary movie, getting startled occasionally but nothing serious. Those moments for both of them were tendering and bonding their friendship even more.

" I'm seeing Sean today for dinner." Amy said after taking a sip of her drink.

"That's great, he must be excited because of the wedding."

Something in Amy's stomach made her nauseous. Not the food but knowing how her brother was about to say "I Do" while she was still dealing with her breakup was harder that she thought.

" Have you spoken with Connor?" Dana asked pausing the movie.

" He sent me messages, but I don't know what to say to him."

"Am, are you sure about this breakup? You seem really affected." Dana said turning to her friend.

Amy sighed. She couldn't stop and remember all the lovely moments they shared together: their first kiss at the Valentine's Day Dance, watching stars together, camping at the beach, going to prom together. It hurt her not to be with him anymore, even more than her breakup with Jonah, and when it happened, she felt devastated. She was unsure how long it would take her to recover.

" I just never thought I would break up with him, I thought we would last."

"Why don't you try calling him? Maybe you can still make it work. "

"Now?"

"I would, but it's your choice."

She grabbed her phone and called him, it rang like four times before someone answered, but it wasn't Connor. Just like last time, it was Gaby's voice she heard on the other side. What was with her answering Connor's phone? Was it a habit of hers now?

"Hello?"

"Hi Gaby,it's Amy.  Can you please give the phone to Connor? I need to speak to him."

"He went out to buy some stuff with his friends and left his phone at the fraternity house."

"And why are you there then?" she asked trying to stay calm.

"I was helping them plan a party tomorrow night. All the campus is invited. Do you want me to give him a message?"

" Please tell him to call me. "

" I will. Bye. "

"Who were you talking to?" Dana asked after seeing her friend frown.

" A friend of Connor called Gabby. She just gives me bad vibes. It's the second time already I call him, and she she's the friend he visited the day I left."

"Is she his receptionist now? " Dana said snorting. "Ignore her, you are about to see Sean and ask him  how the wedding plans are going. "

"You are right. " Amy answered texting her brother. She would see him and offer her help if they needed something. Besides her brother was someone he could always ask for advice.

Jeremy arrived to his dorm carrying his luggage, where Micah was layed on his bed checking his phone. When he saw his friend he jumped from the bed and gave him a hug as if he had not seen him in a long time.

"How was your holiday?" Micah asked.

"Good, I enjoyed seeing my mom. We had dinner with my father and his family. What about yours?"

"It was nice, even though it was my first Thanksgiving without my grandfather. We were really close. "

"Sorry about that."

"No worries. By the way, could you fix things with your girlfriend?"

Jeremy shook his head.

"No, we're done. She is seeing someone else. "

" Are you alright?"

"I will be. "

"That's the attitude. Now that you are single nothing stops you from pursuing Jamie. "

"She's my friend, and I'm not in the mood of starting a new relationship. "

"Not now, but in the future. Jamie likes you a lot, and I know you like her too, and not in a friend way. As much as you deny it. I'll be right be back, I'm starving. Do you want something? "

"I'm good, thanks."

Micah left the room leaving Jeremy with his thoughts. Was it that oblivious he did had feelings for Jamie? Could there be a possibility he was fighting feelings for her? He sighed and decided to catch up on the academic information and walked to the information department to free his mind. For now he had more important things to worry about.

Jesse was taking Paige to the University as they talked, and she finished the last details of her wedding dress in her sketchbook. He couldn't help noticing the butterfly ring she had on the index finger of her left hand.

"That's a nice ring. "

"Thanks, a friend gave it for me. He knows how to pick pretty stuff. " She said raising her hand for him to notice it better without blocking his sight.

Jesse was thinking Dylan probably gave it to her, but she would have mention it. He was asking himself if it was just a friend, or a guy who was interested in her. He wanted to ask more but did want to be so obvious. He wanted to step up with his game with her. He stopped his car the closest he could to her building.

"Thanks for the ride, you are amazing."

" Do you have plans tonight? I would like to ask you to dinner at my place. "

"Sure, should I take something? "

"Your presence is more than enough. You know, you having your dress finished is a memorable moment in your designer career. It should be remembered with a photo of you and your sketch."

"There is a chance Stacey won't pick my dress. "

"I think she will, you are talented, and she knows it. "

She posed with her sketch, and he took a picture. He looked at it for a few seconds, then directed the picture to her.

"It's sent to you."

She said goodbye kissing him on the cheek and walked to her dorm hoping Jessica would be there. Her phone started ringing and it was an unknown number. She was unsure if to answer or not but decided to do. Maybe it was someone she knew with a new phone.

"Hello?"

"Hi Paige, it's Lucy. Dylan gave me your number, i hope you don't mind that i call you. "

"Can I help you with something? "She asked surprised.

"Actually, I do need your help. Can we see each other for lunch? I'll treat you."

"Exactly how can I help you?" she asked more confused.

" I need help with the wedding dress sketch. Please Paige, you are my only opportunity for Stacey to like me."

Paige was not interested in having lunch with her, but at least she wouldn't pay and maybe Lucy had an idea that could work.

" Ok, let's see what you have at lunch. Text me the address."

"Thanks Paige, I owe you one. Please bring your sketchbook, your work can somehow inspire me. "

"See you later."

She hanged her phone hoping that lunch would turn out well as she was still not sold on Lucy and understood why Stacey didn't trust her. Paige walked inside the restaurant and saw Lucy who was waving at her. She took a seat and said hi.

"Thanks for coming, I need your help. Can I see your sketch?" Lucy said placing her hands together.

"Why?"

"I am working on a wedding dress sketch, but I'm lost. I have no idea what to do. Can you at least help me get inspired by looking at your work?"

" Sorry, but I don't share my work. It's personal. "

"Please Paige, I'm begging you. Just a quick glance, I promise."

Paige couldn't help feeling sorry for this girl, she was clearly desperate. She took her notebook and showed her the dress, to which Lucy was clearly ashamed of herself while admiring Paige's work.

"Your work is amazing, while mine looks like a drawing a kindergartener did." she said covering her face.

"Let's do something. We can go tomorrow together to the workshop, and I'll help looking at your sketch. Stacey arrives at ten, meet me there at nine. "

"That would be amazing, thanks. " Lucy answered with a huge smile on her face.

The rest of the lunch was nice, Lucy and Paige talked about each other, and Paige started looking at her with new eyes. Lucy asked for the bill and payed for it, even though Paige offered to pay half. They walked outside the restaurant and Lucy gave Paige a long hug.

"Thank you for everything Paige, you are the best."

"See you tomorrow then."

That night was getting ready for her dinner with Jesse, and she remembered she wanted to put away her sketch notebook in her drawer, however when she looked for it inside her purse she noticed it was gone. She started panicking, there was no way she could have lost it. She remembered how that same afternoon Lucy hugged her and didn't let her go after a while, and it was because took it. Paige grabbed her phone and dialed Lucy's number, but she didn't answer, she must have blocked her after their meeting. She called Dylan instead, hoping he would answer but all she heard was his voicemail.

"Dylan, it's Paige. Your girlfriend stole my sketchbook, where I had the dress, I made for your mother. We met this afternoon for lunch and now it's gone. Call me as soon as you get this. "

She sat down on her bed, feeling panicked and scared. All her works were on that notebook and now they were all now on that girl's power. She couldn't help shedding some tears thinking Lucy would take credit for her work. Her phone started ringing, and she thought it was Dylan, but the name appearing on the screen was Jesse's. He was probably close and was about to pick her up.
