26. Bonnie

She probably hated her, but that was okay. She had to do it anyway.

She reached out to Kitty through her assistant. It's was easy to get him to agree to put him through to her, he was a fan. He went on and own about her modeling days helped him get through college and earn his degree in fashion merchandise. She listened and encouraged him as he talked and talked about his goals in life and how fortunate he was to work with Kitty.

She schmoozed with him, encouraged him, and politely asked to speak to Kitty. She would have slammed the phone on her face if she first tried to call herself, and she wanted a face-to-face with Kitty.

Of course, Kitty protested talking to her at first, but she came around.

"Hi, Kitty."

Kitty was stuffing her face with food and it reminded her of herself, only she was eating healthy food lately and was sick of it.

"How the fuck did you get my assistant's number? Why did you get my assistant's number? Why are you calling?" Kitty yelled at her. "For that matter, why am I even talking to you? Goodbye!"

"Wait, wait, just listen to me, Kitty."

"Listen to you? Why would I do that? You've tried to steal my husband. You tried to fucking kill me! And then you lie on Icee like the crazy bitch you are! Get the fuck outta here."

She deserved that. All of it, but she was trying to correct her wrongs. She should have left Icee alone once he chose someone else. She should not have laid hands on Kitty, but there was a rage in her that day she never had before. She could have hurt Kitty, her baby, and thus herself and her baby that day.

"Kitty, I want to apologize for what I did to you. That night, I don't know what got into me."

"Bonnie, I'm not here for the bullshit. I have things to do."

"Wait, just wait and listen, okay. We're both pregnant now and...I've been going through some emotional ass shit and...I'm finding myself--"

Kitty let out a laugh at that. "Finding yourself?"

"You have every right to hate me. I deserve that. But I'm just calling to be the bigger person and tell you I'm sorry. I loved Ice, yes, but I know he never loved me. That hurt. I wanted to hurt you, I wanted to hurt him...but that only hurt me. Hurt people hurt people. And now I'm going to have a child and I need to fix my life--"

"So you're going on Iyanla show or something?"

She laughed. In another life, she and Kitty could have been friends. "No. That might help, but no. I'm trying to find my happy and have a healthy, happy baby. And tell Icee I'm sorry. He is a good guy and you're lucky he loves you like he does."

"Okay Bonnie, that's great and all, but you still are to stay away from my husband, never say his name in public again, and not get anywhere within a hundred feet of me. I mean that shit. Bye!"

Kitty ended the call and she sat there a moment to reflect on everything. No matter how Kitty felt, it felt good to try and mend that fence. Maybe there never was a fence there because there never was a relationship to start, but for her, it felt like closure. Closing on the chapter of life that was Icee.

Time to begin a new book.

She and her girls finally started on the baby's nursery and that got her mind off things.

"Ooo, Bon, have you decided on a name?" Tink asked, trying to set up the changing table.

"No, I told you, I want to see him first before I name him."

"Why? So you can know who he looks like before-" Tink started, but JJ hit her arm to shut her up.

"No, no worries. Yes, I don't know if it could be Tempo's baby or Tucker's, so I decided to go ahead with the prenatal paternity test. Whoever is not the father, I want out of my life. That's too much stress I don't need right now."

"Good!" JJ said.

"Oooo, if it's TA's, that boy will be ca-yute! Lots of long curly hair for sure."

She rolled her eyes at that. Tucker may be cute in the face, but he was a whole lot of crazy all around. Would that mean her son would be a mental case too? She had to clear that thought from her mind.

"But if it's Tempo's, I bet he will be a singer too. With his voice and your voice, he can make an album at age three," Tink said with a giggle.

"And Tempo's a cutie. Our girl knows how to pick them," JJ added.

"Going to be a cute baby for sure!" Tink waved her arms around excitedly, which caused whatever she created to crash down to the floor.

Yes, she loved her friends but they were useless. Not that she needed a man, but maybe her brothers were better for this job than these two. Or hire people to put all the things together.

Her brother Kirk peeked his head in the nursery.

"You ladies doing okay? I heard a crash."

"We're fine!" JJ said.

"No we're not," Bonnie said, looking over pieces to the crib. "Bro, this ain't in my DNA to do shit like this. Who do I look like, a carpenter?"

"And who do I look like? Your friendly neighborhood Fixerman? Dad didn't teach me any of those skills." Kirk picked up the directions, glancing at them for a second, then tossing them aside. "Yep, hire someone Bon, you're rich."

She sighed at him. She wanted to make her baby's things by hand, with love.

"Then handle it Kirk!"

She left them to it and went downstairs to see if she could sneak a snack. Cory monitored her food harder than a prison guard and she was the inmate. Was that how he did it on the inside?

She could not eat what she wanted anymore, and she did not like it, but she followed it. Still, she was always super hungry. Her doctors were concerned about her weight because she was over where she needed to be. Maybe baby boy was just going to be a big boy.

Soon as she walked into the kitchen, Cory was there cooking something that smelled amazing.

"Is this for me?"

"I've just about figured out when you get hungry so I wanted to have something prepared. You're a few minutes early." He gave her that winning smile. "Go have a seat."

"I would ask what it is, but at this point, I'd eat anything."

She started to sit on the bar island, but the way her fat ass had spread, she could not hoist herself up. Cory dropped what he was doing to help her get on the stool.

"I can do it myself!"

"You love to be hard-headed, huh?"

"Aren't you used to it by now?"

"You haven't scared me off yet," he said, going back to his cooking.

"How do you like working here so far? I mean, you do more than cook for me...you've really taken care of me. And I know I have my brothers and Tink and JJ...but it's nice having someone else. I guess I don't like being alone, that's why I have so many people living here with me and..."

She stopped herself, she was rambling. Cory did not stop her from going on and on, he simply watched her.

"I'm sorry, I just...you can shut me up at any time."

"No, go on."

And then she just felt like telling it all. "I know I'm not an only child, but I'm my mother's only child. I'm actually glad my father did what he did and I have my brothers. I don't know what I would do in this world without them. The only other friends I have I pay them to be around me."

She admitted that was sad. She never had real friends because they were either jealous of her, or using her for something. Tink and JJ were considered her friends, but they started as her employees. Still, she wondered if she was not paying them to hang around, would they be friends with her? Was Cory only nice to her because she paid him well and he lived in her mansion?

"Do you think I'm a rich, stuck-up, celebrity bitch?"

He chuckled at that. "You've earned your money. You earned the right to be a little stuck up, coming from where we came from. Just as you've earned the right to be a celebrity. As far as the bitch, haven't women empowered the word now? That's a good thing, right?"

"I might have done some things that are considered not the empowered bitch."

"Well," he said, as he plated her some food. "Some people can't handle a strong Black woman. You go after what you want. You know what you want. You created your lane in the world of entertainment, and people put respect on your name."

He walked over and placed the plate of sizzling veggie and beef fajitas in front of her. Food was not appetizing to her right now, he was.

She moved close to him and planted a nice long, kiss on him. Cory did not kiss back, he just stood there, stiff. Maybe she read the signs all wrong.

They were interrupted by the others loudly walking into the adjacent dining room. Cory quickly moved away, walking back to the stove.

What happened? Why did she kiss Cory?

And why did he act like it was the worse thing to happen?

"Bon!" JJ stormed in. "Why are you in here girl, come sit in the dining room and eat with us. Hey Cory. I'm starved!"

She looked to Cory to see if he would say anything. She liked talking with him, she wanted to stay. Cory ignored her stares and went on plating the food. This was going to be a mess.

She stepped down from the stool, grabbed her plate, and solemnly walked out of the kitchen. She had no appetite anymore. She couldn't eat the food Cory prepared for her. She wanted to lay in her bed depressed.

Until she got the results from the DNA test. Should she be happy or more depressed?

A/N: I'm finding it hard to get Bonnie and Cory together. It should be easy, he is obviously attracted to her but I don't want it to feel fake or forced.
