12. The Real Danielle Finley

"Everything" can range from very little information to an overload. I can only imagine what Bucky plans to show me as I follow him obediently. I'm terrified, actually. What if it's something I won't expect?

We take an elevator down to a lower level of the Helicarrier. I keep close to Bucky since the halls seem dimmer, a little more eerie on this level.

"Does Vanessa know you're doing this?" I ask.

"She'll know soon enough," he says. "I think it's a good thing she recruited me to help you. If it were her, she'd probably keep this from you for years."

"Why?"

"You'll understand," he says cryptically.

I hate it when people act so vague about things like this.

Soon enough, we go into a room similar to what I had been in before with Agent Hill. She's not currently present. In her place is Agent Romanoff, along with my sister. As quickly as possible, whatever they are looking at disappears from the screens. I scowl.

"What brings you down here?" Agent Romanoff asks neutrally.

"Agent Finley knows," Bucky says gruffly, staring at my sister pointedly. I see her visibly pale once it clicks in her head.

"We'll leave you to it, then." With a guiding arm, Agent Romanoff begins to nudge my sister out the door. She clearly understands too. I'm still the only one in the dark, like I have been since waking up.

"Why can't they stay?" I ask Bucky as they're almost out the door.

"Agent Romanoff feels that it's not her business to be here, and Vanessa...that's a different story. It'll make sense soon."

"You keep saying that, yet it still doesn't." My hands go to my hips.

Bucky goes to one of the touchscreen tables, zipping through files that I see on the monitors. I can't understand what any of the files mean. I look back at the closed door behind us. I understand Agent Romanoff's reasoning for leaving, but why take Vanessa out with her? I think it's my sister's place to see what Bucky is about to show me.

"Pay attention," he says rather quietly. "Eyes on the screen, Danielle."

I watch patiently while Bucky brings up the first piece of information. I recognize it as a profile, my profile. I don't know how they have a picture of me, nobody asked me to take one prior to waking up in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s care. They might've got it from Vanessa somehow. It's the only conclusion I can think of.

I step closer to the screens to read all the details: name; date of birth; birthplace; age; hair; eyes; background; education; parents; status...

I only skim most of the stuff that I don't want to mess with until my eyes fall onto something curious under something titled Affiliation on the profile. It has something unusual on it, which can't be right.

I don't remember anything about something called Hydra. The name is completely unfamiliar to me. It doesn't sound like something I'd be involved with.

I tilt my head. "I-I don't understand," I say quietly.

"What don't you understand?"

"What the hell is Hydra?" I look to Bucky.

His hands clench into fists. I think I've asked the wrong question.

"Bucky?" I ask this in a small tone. He doesn't meet my eyes. "I need to know. You brought me here for a reason, to show me everything. I don't want to wait any longer."

He takes about a minute to get back to me. "You're sure you want to find out?"

"I have to know." I don't take my eyes off him, hope that my stare makes him cave. "And you promised."

"I didn't promise anything."

I roll my eyes.

"You know the phrase 'some things are better left unsaid'?"

"James," I plead. This is the first time I've ever addressed him like this. "Just show me what I want to see. Don't back out on me now."

He sighs. "Don't say that I didn't warn you."

I watch as Bucky skims through a bunch of databases until he finds what he's looking for. In this case, it's footage. He pulls up a bunch of clips and posts them on the screens for us to watch.

At first, I don't know what I'm looking at. It isn't until I home in on the face that I realize...that's me in this footage. That's me who's shooting a gun at other people. I cringe as I watch those shot drop like flies to the ground. My eyes jump from one video to the next. They all share one thing in common: me with a gun in my hand, firing at others.

"This isn't funny," I say seriously. "Pull up the real information."

"This is it. That's you, Danielle. No one else. No clone. You."

I shake my head vigorously. "You're lying. That can't be me in these videos. I'm not a violent person!"

"The footage begs to differ."

I can't get words to come out of my gaping mouth. My eyes goes from one clip to the next. There's a sickening feeling coming on in the pit of my stomach. This isn't real, I try to tell myself. This just isn't real.

The videos are looped a few times before Bucky stops and freezes them all on one thing: my face. The intensity in my eyes is startling. In one video I've got the biggest grimace in the world on my face, and in another I've got a sadistic smile that makes my skin crawl.

This information makes me wish I could un-see this, wish that I invested in a therapist.

Who was I?

Something suddenly makes sense. "You were with them too, weren't you?" I ask tenderly. "That's how we know each other: we were part of Hydra."

Bucky nods stiffly. "I'm sure by now your sister has hinted about our biggest threat." I can see he's in pain just by being in this room with me, a fellow ex-Hydra agent. It still doesn't sound right to even think such a thing.

"She has."

"You're looking at it, just a small fraction of what it really is."

My head begins to pound. Hydra had infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. Vanessa had befriended Hydra agents in disguise. I barely scratch the surface with Hydra, and already I can't process this.

Wait a minute. Vanessa knows I was Hydra. S.H.I.E.L.D. knows I was Hydra. They knowingly have a former Hydra agent on their Helicarrier. But I have to remember that I'm not that agent anymore.

I'm Danielle Finley, the amnesiac. My sister, Vanessa Finley, is S.H.I.E.L.D. I'm formerly Hydra.

How did I end up on the other side?

The only thing to keep me away from the videos of the old me is Bucky. He looks like he's battling between comforting me and punching a hole in the wall. What did Hydra turn us both into?

"This is the big secret you've all kept from me, that I was working with them." I try to swallow, but it's difficult.

"That's just the start. It was supposed to be the only secret. Unfortunately, we think that Hydra is sniffing too close to us."

I dare to ask, "How so?"

Bucky swipes away all of the data regarding me—I'm really thankful for that. He pulls up something different, someone new on the screen: a stern-faced brunette with piercing blue eyes and thin lips. Her eyes startle me the most. They look almost dead, as though something sucked out all of her emotions.

"I was hoping for a chat, but I'll make this work." Her lips twist into a smile. "You've tried so hard for so long to stay hidden from us. But you should have known beforehand that no matter where you run and hide, we're always around. We're getting closer, and we know you can all feel it in your bones."

Her voice sends chills through me, and definitely not the good kind.

"As much as I love to threaten whatever is left of you, I'm pressed for time. You have someone of ours, and we really need them back. I'll make this short and sweet for the both of us: the sooner you give us who we want, the more of your people we'll spare. Keep them away from us, and you can be sure we'll come for them ourselves. You've already made things difficult, why make it worse? You're already spread out so thin, you can't afford to lose anyone else."

Bucky pauses the video there, and I'm glad he has. The woman sort of terrifies me, she doesn't sound like she's bluffing.

"We received this about two weeks ago," Bucky tells me coldly. "When your mentors weren't with you, they were with Agent Hill discussing this video."

"What can you tell me about it?"

"Hydra doesn't bluff, but they haven't come for us yet. Either they're really close, or they're here and just waiting for the right moment to attack."

I purse my lips. "Who's the person they're after?"

"We've all got our theories. Most involve you and me."

I look at Bucky strangely. "Us?"

Before Bucky can answer, the ground shudders under our feet, jostles us. I go nose-diving for the floor, I stop myself with my hands and knees. Bucky curses under his breath and comes for me, pulling me quickly to my feet.

"What's that?" I panic.

"They're here."

Another jostle—this time it knocks out the screens' power. We're plunged into darkness. With a firm grip, Bucky leads me out of the room. Sirens begin wailing in our ears, I cringe into him.

I have no choice but to follow where he's leading me. The sirens grow louder, agents are running around but look collected, like they're prepared for something like this. If everyone knows of the threat, of course they'd be prepared. They'd know Hydra is serious.

"Where are we going?" I shout.

"We're getting a plane out of here!"

"We're abandoning the Helicarrier?!"

"If we don't, we'll go down with it or be captured. Knowing them, it's a tossup. They may want to sink it or salvage it so they can use it."

"How are we escaping?" I'm making it sound like we're committing a prison break.

"We've got one shot, and those are the planes outside on the landing area."

I pale. Great. We're going out into the line of fire, surely. "You do realize that they'll most likely be out there, right?" I yell.

"That's why we come out shooting."

I'm definitely not prepared for this.

The Helicarrier is hit again, knocking Bucky and I sideways. He doesn't let me go as we run straight onto the bridge. There are shouts of commands, and Agent Hill is at the head of the operation, trying to get everything into order. She's too busy to realize Bucky and I running past her.

"Barnes!" I hear Vanessa's voice. I jump as I realize it's coming from one of his wrists. "You better have my sister in one piece!"

"Relax, Ness, I've got her," Bucky assures her. "Grab whoever you can and meet us outside. Go out firing."

"I wouldn't have it any other way. Keep her safe."

We burst out of the bridge, being fired on almost instantly. Bucky shoves me down, pulls a gun from out of nowhere, and starts firing. He's got us behind one of the planes. In addition to the salt water, I smell smoke. My eyes go to the sky to see a few planes circling our sea-grounded Helicarrier. Their gunfire sounds like it's going on at the other end. They've got ground agents doing their dirty work right here.

The Helicarrier fights back; I hear return fire, see bullets fly upwards.

"Here." Bucky puts a small handgun in my lap.

"Do you make these on the spot or something?" I half tease.

"Fire at anyone that's trying to kill you."

I almost laugh at his stern command.

Bucky goes headfirst into open space, I'm right behind him. Using what cover we can, we slowly make our way towards one of the planes, firing on black-clad Hydra agents. Bucky gets more hits than I do, he mainly clears our path. We pass each other; the agents go towards the bridge, almost like they're focused on something more important inside. I still shoot at the running targets, hitting one in the shoulder and another—funnily enough—in their ass. Their fellow agent doesn't take to that too well, because they fire back at me.

I feel a sting shoot across the upper part of my left arm. I cry out feebly. I can't grab at my wound—whether it's small or big—because then I'd be vulnerable. I see the agent who shot me go down—I know Bucky took care of him. In a little pain, I continue towards the ramp.

Bucky and I are about three-quarters away from the ramp until I feel torn. Go and try and help those inside or do I selfishly save myself and go with my guardian?

Bucky makes the decision for me: he grabs me and pulls me at a sprint onto the ramp. I'm almost inside when I turn around and see Vanessa coming onto the scene, shooting at fleeing Hydra agents going inside.

"Vanessa!" I shout at the top of my lungs. I scream as warning shots are fired at the end of the ramp I'm standing on. I stumble back and land on my ass. Pain shoots up my arm again. This time I discard the gun and grab at my wound.

Bucky's at my side in a second, kneeling beside me, defending me while at the same time helping out Vanessa. She makes a beeline for us.

"I'm fine," I rasp the moment she hits the ramp.

"Get her inside. Get us out of here," Bucky orders her.

With a nod, Vanessa gets me on my feet and into the plane. She sits me down while she fires up the engines. I wince, close my eyes, and wish I'm not in the middle of this right now. Bucky continues to defend us until the ramp is completely up and shut.

"Let me see," he demands gently. He goes from soldier to nurse in less than a minute, taking my hand away from my injury. "Just a graze."

I chuckle weakly.

"Hang on back there," Vanessa tells us.

Bucky remains at my side as Vanessa gets the plane going. Tears fall down the sides of my face as I continue to hear raging fire. All those agents on the Helicarrier. What if they're dead? What if they're captured? What of Agent Hill? Romanoff? Barton? I don't want anyone dead, but I already know it's too late to wish for that.

"Now where are we going?" I ask, hoping either my sister or Bucky answers me.

"Some place that's safer than here," Vanessa tells me flatly. "I've got the coordinates. They'll pursue us, I know. If we can lose them we'll be good. Just keep yourself calm back there, Dani. Bucky will take care of you."

"She's right," he voices. "Let's start with your arm. We'll staunch the bleeding until I can actually bandage it." He sighs, looking a bit abashed. "I hate to ask, but you won't miss a part of your pants, will you?"

I shake my head.
