Chapter 23

The first thing Luke noticed when his vision finally cleared was his father battling with Palpatine in a duel of brilliant and deadly flashes of light.

Their sabers clashed back and forth and Luke watched in awe, trying to rise himself. However, he felt a stabbing pain at his throat and went to rub it with a wince.

Then, his father's crystal clear blue eyes were upon him, looking relieved and worried. Luke was about to smile back, tell him he was alright, when the red lightsaber came into his vision.

He opened his mouth to scream too late, as the blade drove into Anakin's side. A silent scream formed the Jedi's mouth and he crumpled to the ground.

      Luke stared in horror.

"Father..." Luke trailed off, staring at the still body.

     'Now...go my son...Leave me...'

Rage burned Luke's vision and his lightsaber snapped to his hand as he jumped towards the Sith. Sidious was definitely surprised, but still managed to block Luke's emerald blade.

"You have been quite the nuisance my dear boy." The Sith hissed.

Luke narrowed his eyes in return, snapping his saber towards any weakness he could find in the Sith's fighting form.

However, every time, the red managed to best the green.

Luke did a spin and swung around Sidious, arcing his blade down in a hard offense.

Sidious whirled to match it, letting loose Sith lightning from his gnarly fingers. Luke reflected it with his blade and stumbled against the Force push.

"The Jedi are no more. Give up." Sidious said.

"Never." Luke cried, lashing back and forth at dizzying speeds, striking at each vulnerable spot. Sidious blinked in surprise and dodged the rage-filled attacks.

"Yes...use your anger." Sidious said with a smile.

Luke frowned at the words, but continued the fight. Calling the Force, he mentally pushed the Sith hard towards the wall. When Sidious impacted and slid to the floor, Luke aimed his blade back at him, going in for a kill.

Sidious snarled, rising quickly and meeting Luke's offense. They went back and forth almost endlessly, Luke's skills somehow managing to come out of hiding. His unconscious father boosted his determination much as Luke being unconscious had done for Anakin. The red saber grazed Luke's sword arm and he gasped, switching hands and still aching from being Force choked.

"I grow tired of this. I will kill you quickly if you end this now." Sidious bargained.

"No!" Luke cried, narrowing his eyes. Power raged around the boy and the Sith grinned.

"Ah...so powerful...just like your father..." He noted. Luke scowled, the Force growing stronger and stronger around him until--

The flash of light was sudden, and the next thing Luke knew, Sidious was slumped on the ground, struggling to rise. Luke blinked in confusion right before the door burst open and Mace Windu and three other Jedi appeared at the door, lightsabers ablaze. The Force had directed the Jedi Masters there with a mental warning, but they had not been expecting this.

      "Skywalker." Windu said in acknowledgement.

Sidious was still on the floor, his lightsaber having rolled away, and he was...laughing?

"Young fool...killing me will never undo what I've done. The Jedi are no more and the Sith will rule again!" He cackled.

A moan startled everyone in the room. "Son...give me the saber."

Luke blinked, watching Anakin practically crawl towards him, anger evident in his blue irises.

      "But Father-"

      "Now Luke." Anakin begged.

Luke blinked, still staring at the defeated Sith, still cackling.

Anakin shakily took the blade and stared at Sidious. "I trusted you...and you hurt my family..."

"Go ahead Chosen One...kill me. But who will save your precious wife?" Sidious barked.

Anakin hesitated for a brief moment before glancing at Mace. Mace nodded, deadly serious.

Luke took a step back as Anakin took a deep breath. "Your rule is over Sidious. I don't need you. I know Padmé will be alright, for it is your corruption that gave me the fears in the first place. But I'm no longer your pawn."

The Sith smiled a ugly smile as the saber rose and then drove home into his heart and non-existent soul.

But right before he could die, a Sith lightning strike released from Sidious's fingers, striking Anakin into a motionless heap. Just like it had on the Second Death Star...

"Father!" Luke cried, panicking and slightly exasperated that his family just couldn't get a break.

Sidious smiled before exploding in a bright blue light. A feeling of a weight being lifted overcame the Force, and every Jedi still alive gasped in a feeling of just being cleansed.

"Qui-Gon was right." Mace said in awe.

The three Jedi beside him were silent in respect and their own shock.

However, Luke turning to the Jedi Masters with red-rimmed eyes immediately diverted their attention back to the situation at hand.

"H-He's not breathing." Luke said shakily, fear overcoming him.

"Skywalker, calm down. He will be healed. Kit, you grab his ankles, I've got his head." Mace said to the Nautolan Jedi beside him. Kit nodded and moved towards Anakin, grasping his legs as told and helping Mace carry the unconscious Jedi towards a medcenter as quickly as possible.

Luke followed them with determined speed, but was devastated and slightly angered when he was told to stay behind.

The two Jedi Masters flew off in a speeder, with Anakin in the back seat, leaving Luke to his frantic state of mind.

     Then something crossed his mind.

     Mother.

With a jolt, Luke darted towards a speeder, heading towards Padmé's apartment.

When he arrived, he jumped out of the ship, sprinting into the house. It didn't take long to find the Nubian Senator, who was pacing on the very balcony he had landed on.

      "Padmé!" Luke cried.

Padmé glanced up and practically sobbed in relief. "Luke!"

Luke ran forward and enveloped his mother in a hug.

"Oh thank goodness. What's happening? Where's Anakin?" Padmé asked.

Luke sighed, still shaking from horror. "He...he's hurt really bad Padmé. Please, we have to go immediately."

Padmé gasped and began to cry again.

Luke eased her. "Shh, you can't stress too much, Mother. The baby."

"Yes. Yes, you're right. I have to--Mother?" Padmé glanced at him in confusion as he sheepishly glanced at his feet.

"I forgot I didn't tell you." Luke said.

Slowly, he explained exactly what he also told his father, awaiting the inevitable reaction.

"You mean...my baby...babies I guess...you're one of them?" Padmé asked with wide brown eyes.

Luke nodded, still jittery from the nerves to get to his severely injured father in the medcenter.

"Oh my." Padmé gasped, sobbing and enveloping Luke in another hug. "I knew you looked too much like Ani."

Luke smiled despite himself. "Mother, I'm glad you know, but we have to get going. I don't like being away from Father any more than I have to. I can't sense what's happening to him...it's troubling me...and the Jedi...I don't even know if Obi-Wan's alright--"

"All right dear. You're right. We must go." Padmé said, wiping her tears.

Luke smiled and helped her towards the speeder. They were almost there when Padmé leaned over with a grunt of pain.

     "Padmé?" Luke asked confusedly.

The woman looked up, her face a mask of pain. "Luke...dear...ahh!" She cried.

Luke panicked. He knew what was happening. But why now? Could he and Leia really have picked a worse time?

"The babies." Padmé gasped just as her water broke.

     "Oh my Force." Luke paled.

     "Medcenter!" Padmé screamed.

"Right." Luke snapped out of the weirdness of the situation and quickly rushed Padmé towards the speeder.

She clambered into the passenger seat and began to breath heavily, her hand over her stomach.

"Alright...j-just breathe." Luke said nervously, his hands white-knuckled on the steering wheel.

"Don't worry dear...the birthing...aghh...process usually takes about a few hours...oohhh...but you and your sister seemed determined to come now...ahhhhh." Padmé said between breaths and moans.

     "R-right." Luke said shakily.

They approached the medcenter where doctors and med-droids came out with a hover gurney, placing the pregnant woman on it and wheeling her away.

"She'll won't be going into full labor for quite a while. But when the babies finally come, we'll notify you. Are you the father?" One droid asked Luke as he walked numbly into the building.

Luke blinked at the question, not fully coherent at the past hour's events. "Uh...no, she's my mother."

The droid paused and stared after Luke almost in complete and utter confusion, as the boy meandered towards Anakin's room.

The room was open for visits, but Anakin was still unconscious, a blanket tucked around him and fluids being pumped into him. He looked pale and his eyelids were sunken. A bacta bandage was wrapped around his torso, gradually healing the lightsaber wound.

Luke sighed. "Please get better father."

Pillowing his head on his father's limp arm, Luke allowed himself a brief moment of rest.

His eyes had barely fluttered closed before there was a knock on the door. Luke groggily glanced up to see a familiar face.

     "Obi-Wan!" Luke cried, jumping up.

Obi-Wan smiled as Luke tackled him in a hug. "Hello young one. I just came back from Padmé's room. They estimate a few more hours before the babies truly come. The water breaking is usually misinterpreted as the baby or babies coming immediately, but it usually takes quite a while."

Luke looked up. "That's good. I don't want Anakin to miss it...how are you here?"

"Luck. I barely got away...we've lost so many Jedi today...but luckily the Temple was pretty well defended." Obi-Wan said with a weak smile.

Luke nodded, glad his old mentor had made it out okay.

"Is that you old man?" A croak came from the bed.

"Father!" Luke cried, squeezing Anakin in a hug.

     "Oh! Luke...careful." Anakin wheezed.

Luke pulled back with a blush. "Sorry...I was just so worried. You had stopped breathing earlier and--"

"But I'm alright now and that's what matters. Now what's this about Padmé?" Anakin asked.

"She's in the medcenter as well, preparing to go into full labor." Obi-Wan said bluntly.

     Anakin paled. "Now?"

Both and Anakin and Obi-Wan couldn't help but shift their gaze towards Luke. Obi-Wan smirked. "Want to witness your own birth, Luke?"

Instead of paling, Luke turned a sickly green. "I...uh...I'm not...sure."

     Anakin burst into laughter.

Obi-Wan just smiled. "Well anyways, I overheard the doctor saying Anakin is well enough to see Padmé, but then he has to come right back here afterwards. I came to get you."

"Thank you Master." Anakin said with a genuine smile.

Luke was about to speak when a nurse darted in. "Mr. Skywalker. Your wife has gone into labor. The babies are coming."

Anakin stood bolt upright, despite his injuries. Without a word, he sprinted out of the room, followed hastily by Obi-Wan, and lastly by a very wary Luke.

"Oh Leia...if only you could see this." Luke thought nervously as he followed his father and his former mentor into the delivery room.
