Chapter 17
Obi-Wan landed his ship on a platform projecting out of the side of a giant sinkhole. All was quiet...a little too quiet for his liking. He climbed out of his ship, noticing a local administrator, Tion Medon, coming out to greet him. A short ground crew came towards him, going over to his ship. On a ledge above the landing platform, Grievous's bodyguards were watching with a keen, calculating as Obi-Wan began to talk to Tion Medon.
"Greetings, young Jedi. What brings you to our remote sanctuary?" Tion asked, his real emotions clouded over with a calm façade over his face.
"Unfortunately, the war." Obi-Wan answered, bowing lightly for the alien.
"There is no war here unless you've brought it with you." Tion said, looking distraught.
Obi-Wan noticed but said nothing, sensing the magna-guards watching from above. "With your kind permission, I should like some fuel and to use your city as a base as I search nearby systems for General Grievous."
Tion stiffened slightly at the name and Obi-Wan raised a suspicious eyebrow. The ground crew inspecting his ship rushed out and began to refuel the fighter. As they worked, Tion leaned forward, whispering to the Jedi and confirming the man's suspicions.
"He is here! We are being held hostage. They are watching us." He said desperately.
'Not a wild bantha chase after all.' Obi-Wan thought. "I understand." Obi-Wan whispered in return, his sense on high alert.
"The tenth level . . . thousands of Battle Droids . . ." Tion said, still looking terrified.
"Tell your people to take shelter. If you have warriors, now is the time." Obi-Wan instructed.
Tion nodded hesitantly and bowed to the Jedi. He silently stalked away from the landing platform and caught Grievous's bodyguards retreating from overhead.
Meanwhile, Obi-Wan climbed back into his fighter, speaking to his astromech unit, R4-G9.
"Geenine, take the Fighter back to the ship. I'm staying here. Tell Cody I've made contact." Obi-Wan said with a lowered voice.
The little astro droid beeped a reply and allowed Obi-Wan to climb down and walk into the shadows, watching the ship take off.
•••
"I told you, all he wanted was fuel." Tion said to one of the bodyguards that was practically looming over him.
"What was his name?" The guard asked in a metallic and unforgiving voice.
"He didn't say."
They both watched as the blue Jedi fighter took off, the tension so thick that it could be cut with a knife.
•••
Obi-Wan quickly rushed up a stairway cut into the side of the sinkhole. In an alcove, he carefully surveyed the city, then quickly moved on, not wanting to draw attention.
He made his way through the city, looking up at the tenth level with electro-binoculars from his utility belt.
'Now how am I going to get up there?' He thought.
A strange bellowing cry came from a distance and he whirled, moving to investigate. A coral field appeared into his vision, filled with almost half a dozen dragon-like lizards. Several local wranglers were around, most likely not selling.
Smiling, Obi-Wan moved towards them. When he approached, one of the wranglers glared at him, as if waiting for him to try something.
Obi-Wan gave his most innocent smile and waved his hand slowly, concentrating on the Force.
"I need transportation." He said, his voice echoing mystically.
The wranglers eyes glazed over, staring at Obi-Wan with wide eyes. His native tongue came out, but it worked all the same.
"You need transportation." The alien said in his language.
"Get it for me." Obi-Wan continued.
"I will get it for you." he slurred, moving towards another wrangler and chattering away in his dialect.
With a smirk, Obi-Wan moved to inspect the beasts, checking for the best of the bunch. Teeth, legs, they were all variable factors. He finally approached one and patted it on the neck, deciding. "This one."
The wrangler he had mind-controlled strolled over rather sluggishly and brought the chosen animal to the Jedi.
"Boga. She answers to Boga." the wrangler said again in his native speech, but Obi-Wan understood.
"Good girl, Boga." Obi-Wan said with slight affection, swinging onto the back of the creature. Boga reared up and scurried to the edge of the sinkhole. She begun to climb the wall of the sheer cliff and upwards towards the tenth level. Obi-Wan looked around him, noting that Tion had taken his word to heart as the city seemed deserted. He, however, remaind alert, knowing Grievous could be anywhere at anytime.
•••
General Grievous stood before the Council of Separatists, including Nute Gunray, Rune Haako. Poggle the Lesser, Shu Mai, San Hill Po Nudo, Wat Tambor, and Passel Argente. Meanwhile, Obi-Wan remained hidden above the assembly, watching intently.
He tried to keep his mind off of Anakin, Luke, and Padmé, but he was failing miserably. He shook his head, listening in close and also enhancing his hearing with the Force to hear the meeting.
"It won't be long before the armies of the Republic track us here." Grievous said in his deep, harsh, and raspy voice. "I am sending you all to the Mustafar system in the Outer Rim. It is a volcanic planet which generates a great deal of scanning interference. You will be safe there."
"Safe?" Gunray snapped in outrage. "Chancellor Palpatine managed to escape your grip, General, without Count Dooku. I have doubts about your ability to keep us safe."
Grievous snarled at Neomodian. "Be thankful, Viceroy, you have not found yourself in my grip . . . Your ship is waiting."
The Separatist leaders did not look pleased, and Obi-Wan felt as if something was amiss. All the Separatists in one place seemed like a deliberate trap...but he couldn't exactly be sure.
Once the leaders had cleared and Grievous was now controlling the army alone, Obi-Wan took his chance to advance. He knew he had a promise of returning home safe to keep to Anakin, but he had to risk it.
For the Republic.
He quickly removed his cloak and jumped from his platform above, right behind the General.
"Hello, there!" He quipped in mock enthusiasm.
Grievous whirled, in shock and surprise. However, he looked startlingly smug. "General Kenobi, you are a bold one. I find your behavior bewildering . . . Surely you realize you're doomed," he turned to the droid army surrounding him. "Kill him!"
About a hundred battle droids surrounded he Jedi, along with Greivous' bodyguards and of course the General himself.
Obi-Wan simply looked around and took a few steps forward, meeting Grievous face to face.
The two stared at each other for a moment before Grievous snarled in outrage at Obi-Wan's nonchalant attitude of the situation. "Enough of this."
The sound of power staffs whirring to life echoed in Obi-Wan's ears and he smiled, ducking casually as the staffs whistled over his head. He unclipped his saber, igniting it and deftly cutting a magna-guard completely in half.
The power staff flew into the air, caught by Grievous himself, who was practically fuming. The other three magna-guards moved to attack Obi-Wan with more dedication and fury. Using the Force, he released a piece of equipment form the ceiling and dropped it over the magna-guards, effectively crushing them. Finally, he slashed the last one down with his saber and continued to stalk towards Grievous.
The battle droids moved to help before Grievous raised a metal claw.
"Back away. I will deal with this Jedi slime myself." Grievous snarled with a hacking cough.
"Your move." Obi-Wan taunted.
"You fool. I have been trained in your Jedi arts by Count Dooku himself." His arms separated and he grabbed all four lightsabers on his belt. His four arms began to create a flashing display of swordsmanship and he smirked behind his metal mask. "Attack, Kenobi."
"You forget I trained the Jedi that defeated Count Dooku!" Obi-Wan said with slight pride in his voice, hard-pressed to defend himself against the General's deadly onslaught.
The fight began with a startle of colored energy blades moving back in forth in a deadly dance. Battle Droid Sharpshooters began to fire at Obi-Wan, but he deflected the bolts easily, too focused on Grievous.
A counterattack escaped him and he deftly cut through one of Grievous' hands, dropping the lightsaber in its grasp to the floor.
An explosion suddenly rattled the room, echoing throughout the sinkhole. Grievous and Obi-Wan glanced to the entrance of the control center to see Clone troopers in the distance, attacking droids in the sinkhole. On the far wall of the sinkhole, clones began rappelling onto the balconies.
"I may not defeat your droids, but my troops certainly will." He said with a raised eyebrow.
"Army or not, you must realize you are doomed." Grievous snarled.
"I don't think so." Obi-Wan grinned as twenty clones suddenly rappelled into the entrance of the control center, blasters blazing. The droids immedieatly returned fire and Obi-Wan used the opening to attack the General. Grievous defended quickly with a power staff still in his grip.
Obi-Wan them force-pushed Grievous backwards, and the General fell onto a lower platform. Obi-Wan darted after him, not wanting him to escape again.
More clones rappelled into the control center, blasting away at the remaining droids.
Obi-Wan cut down several droids as well as he raced to the entrance of the control center. The Jedi Master quickly spotted Grievous racing toward one of the landing platforms in the midst of the battle. He jumped onto a wheel scooter and took off down the wall of the sinkhole. Obi-Wan immediately whistled for his lizard, Boga, who ran to him without hesitation. The Jedi jumped on and whipped the reins, moving quickly to track Grievous.
As he chased the General, his lightsaber slipped out of his hand and he muttered a curse he had developed from Anakin over the years.
Annoyed, he gave the lizard a swift kick with the heel of his boot to move her forward, taking off down the vertical side of the sheer cliff. Grievous finally reached the landing platform where his shuttle was waiting, but Obi-Wan quickly dropped on top of the starship with his lizard.
General Grievous spun his scooter around and took off up the vertical cliff face with Obi-Wan and Boga again in hot pursuit. The sinkhole was engulfed in a great battle between clones and droids and the people of Utapau were cowering in whatever shelter they could find.
However, a large group of Utapauan troops on similar lizards to Boga, began to assist the clones on the attack against the droid army.
Obi-Wan and Grievous were still racing through the city at breakneck speed. They passed through battle zones, narrowly escaping explosions, laser bolts, and troops from both sides.
Grievous deftly laid the scooter down as he went around sharp turns. Boga breathed hard as she tried desperately to keep up. Both the Jedi Master and the General destroyed droids, equipment, and clone troops as they cut a swath of destruction through the city in their chase.
Grievous worked his way out onto the rim of the sinkhole, passing some wind blades. The evil Droid General released the brakes on the lethal blades, and they begun to spin, cutting off Obi-Wan's access to the General. Boga pulled up short in front of the blades. Grievous laughed and pulled out a comlink.
"Prepare to move out of orbit. I will be up in a few moments." He rasped.
Obi-Wan sighed and sized up the situation, looking for a way to get to Grievous.
Meanwhile, the General accelerated off the edge, activating his claws, dropping, and clinging to another nearby grouping of windmills. Boga attempted to jump to follow, barely making it and almost falling into the precipice below.
General Grievous roared through the stone block tunnel system, riding up on the curved walls as he went around corners or passed oncoming traffic. Obi-Wan raced after the Droid, Boga moving onto the ceiling as they passed traffic. The Jedi finally caught up with Grievous, and they charged through the tunnel, side by side. Obi-Wan grabbed the Droid's electronic staff.
The two racing opponents darted out of the tunnel system and onto the landing platform.
Obi-Wan yanked hard on the staff, jumped off Boga and onto the General's scooter, and knocked both himself and the droid general to the ground.
Grievous pulled out a laser pistol and fired at the Jedi. Obi-Wan reached out his hand, grabbed the General's electro-staff and spun the staff, blocking the laser bolts.
Obi-Wan then charged the General, swinging the staff and hitting the droid in the stomach, knocking the gun away. Grievous was hit by the staff, and the Force bended his forearm. He pulled Obi-Wan close to him, and they engaged in a furious fight. The electro-staff was knocked away in the middle of it and the two reduced to hand-to-hand combat.
Obi-Wan struggled to avoid the deadly blows of the brutal, unstoppable droid. He even stupidly kicked Grievous in his metal shin, getting a throbbing wake up call through his toe as he shouted in pain.
Then, after the pain dissolved, he noticed Grievous' stomach-plate was loose. He grabbed it without hesitation and ripped it off, revealing the alien life form's guts encased in a bag in the droid's chest. Screaming in rage, Grievous grabbed Obi-Wan, hoisted him over his head, and tossed him across the platform. Obi-Wan dangled off the edge of the platform, clutching the rim and trying to hold on. Perspiration collected on his forehead and he struggled to pull himself up.
The droid general then grabbed the staff and charged the defenseless Jedi.
"You are a fool Kenobi." Grievous coughed, stalking ever so closer with the ignited power staff.
Obi-Wan grunted weakly, still trying to rise.
"You...will not win...Grievous." Obi-Wan panted, trying not to panic as his fingers began to slip.
Grievous chuckled, turning it into another rasping cough. "I already have. You and your precious Order will be destroyed...along with everyone you care about."
Obi-Wan tried to control his anger at the alien droid, forcing himself not to worry about Anakin or Luke.
"I figured...before I kill you...you should know the truth." Grievous said smugly, raising the staff for the killing blow.
Obi-Wan tried to shut his eyes and get it over with, but he instead looked up in horror.
"That boy you brought on my ship...Starkiller...he's not who he says he is."
"I don't believe you." Obi-Wan snarled.
"Oh? Well I'll tell you anyways..." The electric purple energy came inches from the Jedi Master's face and he swallowed in anticipation.
"He's not from this time. According to my master...he used the Force to time travel backwards." Grievous snarled.
Obi-Wan's eyes widened, sensing that the monster was telling the truth.
"What else?" Obi-Wan demanded, suddenly catching a glint of a blaster in the light.
So close yet so far away. If he could stall Grievous for a moment longer...
"He is Anakin Skywalker's son."
And just as the words left, Obi-Wan called the blaster to him with the Force and shot the General several times in his open chestplate.
Grievous startled back in terror and agony and then screamed as he exploded from the inside out. With a shaky sigh, Obi-Wan finally gathered the strength to pull himself up and onto the platform.
He threw the blaster down and brushed himself off, staring nervously down at the General's carcass.
'He is Anakin Skywalker's son...'
"Impossible." Obi-Wan muttered. But the more he thought about it, the more he knew it to be true.
He was too much like Anakin and Padmé to not be their child. But that meant Padmé was with child. Oh my...
Then he remembered where Luke was currently and paled even further.
'Their son is dying and they don't even know it.'
Determination overcame him and he jumped onto Boga. He kicked her side and rode off.
He had to find a way to contact Anakin immediately.
