Chapter 3
Yo y'all here's another chapter!
-------------------------------------------------------
SEVEN MOONS LATER
"Oh my StarClan, do you remember the time when, like, Fernstar was attacking our Clan? And then Thornpaw-"
"I swear, Larkpaw, if you don't stop talking-"
I swat playfully at my best friend, catching the edge of her ear with my paw. She shrieks with faux pain, returning my gesture with small nip of my shoulder. Larkpaw and I, plus Sunpaw and Thrushpaw, are gathered in a tight circle, happily munching on various prey. The sun shines like a golden pebble behind us, closing in on the horizon.
"Ugh," Larkpaw moans, turning her half-eaten mouse over with her paw. "Stupid Tawnyclaw. She literally made me go on like, two hunting patrols today!"
"You think that's bad?" Sunpaw spits between mouthfuls of lizard. "Snowjaw made me go on two hunting patrols, plus a border patrol!"
"Actually, today while Thornpaw and I were on border patrol, the funniest thing happened!" Thrushpaw meows, glancing over at me. I let out a small snort of laughter as I recall the incident, the memory replaying over and over in my head.
"Ok so," I start, deciding to tell this anecdote for myself. "Thrushpaw and I were going around the RiverClan border, when this RiverClan she-cat comes up and basically starts flirting with Thrushpaw."
At the sound of 'RiverClan she-cat', Sunpaw glances suggestively towards my brother, sending a whistle in his direction. Larkpaw only rolls her hazel eyes, acting as if she doesn't give two mousedungs. However, I know that she has adored Thrushpaw since we were kits, and is probably seething with jealousy as I speak.
"So she's like, talking me up about some stuff, and then she asks what my name is." Thrushpaw pauses for a moment, then continues. "Thankfully, Thornpaw's mentor comes up and is all like 'Hey Thrushpaw, how's it going? I swear to you, that she-cat got out of there faster than you can blink-"
"Shh..." Larkpaw stops my brother mid-sentence and whisks her tail in the direction of a white blob. "Look who it is."
"Seriously? What's she doing here?" I flick my ears angrily, my sister's very presence enough to spark annoyance in my chest. Nowadays, anything she does seems to silently condescend her Clanmates. It's even apparent in the way she walks, as if she was above every cat else. Her friend, Jaypaw, would walk beside her, constantly praising her every move, treating her like the leader.
She thinks she's so much better than everycat else just because she's the medicine cat apprentice.
"Mousebrain!" I hiss towards my sister. Her white ears perk up, but she seems to ignore my taunt.
"Foxdung!" Sunpaw snorts, glaring directly at my kin. The others pick up our game quickly, hurtling insult after insult at my sister.
"Clumsy-foot!"
"Crowfood!"
"Bubble-head!"
"Idiot!"
"Runt!"
My comment seems to be the final crack in the ice, shattering my sister's barrier. She begins to sob softly, her head lowered towards the ground. I smile, satisfied with my work. A small twinge of regret flickers inside my heart, but I quench it quickly. Rosepaw deserved it, anyway. She's always been such a cry-kit, breaking down into tears over the littlest things.
"Thanks a lot, guys!" Jaypaw hisses, his ears flat against his gray head. He wraps his tail around Rosepaw, and whispers what I assume to be comforting words into her ear.
"Thanks for what? Showing her what warrior life is like?" Larkpaw laughs, her voice hinted with aggression. She takes a step towards Jaypaw, her white fangs glinting in the sun.
"Ooh," I leap to my paws, eager to join my friend. We both circle Jaypaw and Rosepaw like hawks, trapping them in a tight circle. I watch as Jaypaw nervously sheathes and unsheathes his claws, their small stubs glinting in the sunlight. Rosepaw, of course, is cowering behind the tom, her white paws trembling with fear. Of course she's acting like a coward-she's always depended on others to save her, and yet never seemed to repay the favor.
Ugh, I hate her...
"HA!"
My paws collided with ashy tufts, sending the apprentice tumbling to the ground. A flurry of white and tan shifted in the corner of my amber eyes, but my attention was focused on the squirming form between my toes. Adrenaline coursed through my blood, sending waves of energy rippling under my dark tabby fur. There was just something about having my paws pressed into his fur, his life balanced in my paws...
Something that made me feel powerful.
"JAYPAW!"
A hard, round object collided with my side, pushing my weight off of Jaypaw. My eyes fluttered closed, blocking the dust that plumed around my face. Overhead, Rosepaw stood mouse-lengths from my face, a single paw pressed into my chest.
"What the-" I kicked Rosepaw in the belly, purposely pushing it into the softest, most painful section. Rosepaw fell to the ground, letting out a pained squeal as she hit the ground.
I cast an angry glare towards my sister, my eyes locking with her crystal blue orbs. Before she could say any more, I had whipped around, stalking back towards my snickering friends.
Stupid Rosepaw.
