7| Dead End
Camp |Peshawar
It was pouring heavy, 6 in evening but it seemed like midnight as the sky was covered with black and grey clouds. Cold penetrating in the skin. December was about to over and it was predicted that January would be harsher and colder.
The ones who wanted to visit the other campsite boarded the mini bus. Shehry wore an extra hoodie over the sweater he was already wearing and kept the hood over his head as he walked into the bus and took the window seat.
"Thannnddd!!!" he rubbed his hands together before bringing them close to his mouth and blew in them, trying to bring some warmth. Daniyal took the seat next to him, Atif and Sophia remained in the camp.
"Atif?" Shehry looked at Daniyal and inquired, his teeth clattering badly.
"Tired" Daniyal informed and Shehry rolled his eyes.
"And Sophia? Don't tell me she is tired as well, kerti werti kuch hea nai Madam!" he added and Daniyal smiled shaking his head.
"I dunno some girls' issues" he shrugged and Shehry frowned. "Pata nai itne masley hotey q in kuriyon ko"
"Oh! I forgot my phone" Daniyal suddenly remembered as he checked his pockets and then getting up from the seat he walked down the bus. Shehry looked out from the window, at the pouring rain and something flashed like a blast inside his brain as he found Dr. Ashok walking towards the bus.
Maya...
Sliding the window pane aside, Shehry looked around, due to heavy rain everyone stayed inside the tents only a few people were out. Shehry could hear voices near the bus; The driver was talking to the conductor about the bad weather while Craig was talking giving instructions to somebody as he stood under an umbrella.
What if she is still inside? Shitt! Shehry damagh kharab tha tera, why did you even do that?
Suddenly he heard Saleem, a local volunteer young boy talking to his friend and he moved his head out finding him standing there with the bus. Smell of tobacco crashed to his nostrils from somewhere near.
"Hey Saleem!" he called.
"Ji?" the boy walked towards his window, he was wearing a raincoat and was soaking under rain water.
"Saleem ek kam kar yar" Shehry bent a little and asked him to go open the lock of the store tent.
"Wo kab locked hota hea Shehry bha! Khula ho ga" Saleem said but Shehry shook his head.
"Oho! I locked it myself"
"To rehne den band, q kholna hea?" Saleem casually stated, Shehry felt he didn't want to go that far just for a useless thing. The driving seat was now occupied by the driver and they were all set to go.
"Abhi kisi ko wahan se koi kam nai, sab to ja rae ho ap log. Aur agar ho ga to khol le ga khud hi" he kept on blabbering and Shehry smacked his palm over his forehead in frustration.
"I locked that Indian doctor inside, she is still there, go open the door" Shehry explained gritting his teeth and Saleem's mouth parted open in disbelief. The driver started the engine and Shehry panicked a little. "Hurry up! Go!"
"What? You locked her? Why?"
"Do as I said Saleem! Please" Shehry pleaded and the boy nodded.
"Okay okay don't worry mein jata hoon" Saleem assured him and the bus moved. Right then Daniyal stepped inside and took the seat next to him.
"Kia bat hea? All set?" Daniyal looked at his tensed face under the yellow lights in the bus and Shehry nodded. "Yeah am fine"
The bus drove out of the parking area which was a huge ground and headed towards its destination.
Shehry calmly rested his head back at the head rest not knowing what he had done to Maya...
Saleem
"Yar kia Shehry bhai bhi na" I shook my head as I saw my feet inches deep in mud as I walked towards the store tent.
"Saleem!" I was walking cautiously not to get slip in the wet mud, keeping a torch in my hand when I heard the voice and my feet halted.
I threw light in the direction and found Zamaan bhai standing near a tent, looking up at the sky; the intensity of rain had decreased a little. "Ji Zaman Bhai?"
"Where are you going?" he asked and I stepped towards him.
"Store tent" I informed him and he frowned.
"Oho! Kuch chaiye tha to mujhy bolta tu, abhi just waheen se aa raha hoon" He stated.
"So the store was open?" I asked and he frowned again. "Yeah! It was open, band kun hona tha?" he asked and I shook my head. "Wesey he"
"Uh- wo kon tha ander wahan?" I further asked casually, I didn't feel like telling him about what Shehry bhai had done.
"No one" he stated and I sighed in relief. Somebody must have opened the door already and Dr. Maya had come out.
"Thank God!" I sighed loud. "What happened?" He inquired and I waved a hand in air.
"Nothing! All fine. Acha Zaman bhai chalta hoon" I told him and turned back to my tent, thankfully I was saved from going that far under that rain.
Khizrah
"I wasn't expecting it that quick Saira bhabi!" Amna's mom was at our place, the news about Hussain's proposing me on the first sight spread like fire in woods.
This is exactly what happens when more than one desi women involved in a rishta.
"But acha he hea, deir aaye durust aaye" She further added, Mom looked a little uncertain.
"but Asfa bhabi you said Hussain is a little unsettling kind of a person, Khuda na karey kal ko muker gaya shadi se to? I mean who takes such decisions in such hurry?" Mom stated her fears loud, but aunty smiled and shook her head.
oho Mom! ap kun derti hen? Hussain mujhy bilkul bhi aesey nai lage. I just silently thought.
"Aesa kuch nai bhabi! Hussain is very responsible and mature; it's just that he is a little too straight forward. Bus. Baki Allah ka shuker hea bacha buhat acha hea"
"Ap keh rai hen to ho ga he, aakhir ko apka bhanja hea" Mom nodded her head and I bit on to my lower lip hiding my smile as I felt mom agreeing for Hussain.
"Let Shehry come back then we will come properly with the proposal" Aunty stated and I felt my cheeks blushing and Mom said an Inn Shaa Allah.
"Khizrah beta! you liked him na?" Aunty asked me, and I, who was up till now looking here and there pretending oblivious to all that discussion looked at her smiling a yes.
"Asfa wesey koi buri aadat waghera to nai na lerkey mein?" Mom asked, once again jumping into the uncertain mode of her and I mentally rolled my eyes.
Please mom! I liked him... buri aadat hui to I will manage
"Arey nai bhabi! Hussain has an excellent brought up. Shaista was a true lady, trust me she was far better mother than I am and Asif bhai to kamal k baap thy, un dono ka mixture hen Shehry or Hussain. ap ne dekha nai dono ne Maha ko kitne saleeqey se pala hea?" Aunty was saying and I was silently imagining myself as his wife. Hayeee! The feeling was something else.
"Ap befiker rahiye. Hussain buhat muhabbat se or buhat khush rakhey ga hamari Khizrah ko" Aunty assured Mom and I blushed hard this time.
I dunno but I was already feeling like Mrs. Hussain
Maya
A sudden pang of pain appeared in my head and spread in my skull making my head dizzy. I held it between my hands. Slowly the pain decreased and I opened my eyes, realizing I cried to sleep here in the store tent and woke up when my head slipped down the stool and met the hard floor.
I stood up; I could hear the sound of rain. Once again fear engulfed me as I thought about him, he was just outside the tent somewhere waiting for me to take his revenge. My heart started beating faster yet again.
"you have to face it Maya! You can not run away, not with this one" gulping the lump down I walked towards the door to step out but my brain stopped functioning as I found it locked from outside.
"Koi hea? Anyone there?" I yelled loud, slamming the cold hard door but no body came.
"Shit! Who did that?" I looked around, there was nothing with which I could open the door, it was locked from outside. I stood there helpless when suddenly I felt movement near the door and I quickly thumped it with my palms just to make sure the person outside knows I am locked here and opens the door.
"Hello! Open the door am inside"
No reply came then I heard the person was pulling the knob back and I sighed in relief but the relief turned into annoyance as the door flung open making me face to face with that low IQ Zamaan. Distaste spread across my tongue and I felt quite sure he was the one who locked me.
He was holding a torch light in his hand which he brought up to my face level. My eyes squinted due to the light and they pained, they must be puffed, swollen out of all that crying.
"You locked me here?" I narrowed my eyes at him as I found him staring at my face but he chuckled, taking a step inside and I backed off.
"I did not. Shehry did" he informed and my feet halted in my tracks with my heart beating fast. "Wo to gaya, tumhen merey hawaley ker k" I blinked my eyes at him in utter disbelief and found him rubbing his chin with one hand as he smirked at me. I didn't feel good about this man, this place, this moment. Everything was wrong.
"Shehry couldn't do this" I spoke to myself, still in disbelief and he laughed mockingly.
"Q? yar hea tumhara?" he asked with a smirk, his eyes had a glint, a terrible one. "Bharosa torr diya yar ne?" he further added leaning his face in and I backed my head off in distaste.
"Get away, let me go" I tried to keep my voice steady and my feet firm over the ground that felt like jelly. Zamaan did not move as if he didn't listen to me. I took a step forward but he blocked my way.
"I said let me go!" I shouted but the next moment he slammed the door shut with his foot. My heart panicked as a thousand dark and creepy thoughts strike to my brain.
"You know what! I was reading the news paper and see what news I read" he spoke calmly, pacing into my direction and I tried my best not to shiver or to look frightened of the dog in front of me.
"A group of Indian forces raided a house in Kashmir, they found nothing inside but a poor, unarmed man with a daughter. No heroine no cocaine no drugs at all" he stopped near my face... too close to my face and I held my breath. One more step and I will scream... I will scream at the top of my lungs.
"You know what they did? Those Indian officers" he asked and I gulped down, the heavy rain was still pouring and my heart thumping inside my chest as he spoke into my ear. "They tied the man in his chair and took the daughter inside the room and you know what they did to her?" he asked further with a frown over his forehead. I felt I won't be able to listen more, my hands fisted at my sides and nails piercing in my own skin.
"I don't care what they did. Let me go...." I pushed him hard and tried to walk towards the door when he grabbed my elbow and pulled me into him. "Choro mujhy! Na mera koi taluq hea un Indian officers se, na tum se, na is khaber se. Choro mera hath..." but my words got lost in my throat the moment his hand flew in air slapped my face hard, making me fall over one of the containers.
My ribs hurt and I groaned but he didn't let me get up, his broad frame hovered over mine as he held my face roughly in his hand, not letting me utter a word let alone scream. "I wasn't done yet" he gritted his teeth as he spoke, I could smell tobacco. I hated him.
"They raped her, one by one all of them; those dogs" he snapped at my face in anger and hatred, I could feel goosebumps appearing everywhere on my body as he stared fire down my eyes. "They raped her to death, letting the father hear his daughter's cries" he further added, I wanted him to shut up but he did not.
"She was only 9" his words sent a chill shiver of fear down my spine and for a moment I went numb in my body and in brain. I blinked my eyes in utmost disbelief but I wasn't responsible for that, why was he telling me all this? Why was he hurting me?
"Tum Hindu saley maaro hamarey bhaiyon ko, zulm karo hamari maa'on behno per or hum moo dekhtey rahen?" I saw flames in his eyes and my heart started drop down, I knew what he was up to... but I had to stop him, I had to do something and save myself.
Pushing him away I backed off and quickly got over my feet, try not to stumble. But I had only attempted to run towards the door and scream when I felt his arm wrapping around my waist from behind and the other hand covering my mouth, muffling all my cries into his palm.
