22| He Smiled

Assalam-o-Alaikum!

Quick update <3

First emotional moments of HussainMaya ;)

22| He Smiled.

Shehry

"Hm, so I think we will have to book a rest house or may be some rooms in a hotel for the guests, coz man the list seems a Km long already" Hussain looked up and down at the guest lists we have made for my wedding which was planned to be next month, after 21 days to be precise.

"And what exactly a rest house will cost us, do you have any idea? Already things are crossing the budget Hussain" I mentally did the estimate and felt like getting bankrupt in this wedding. "ye shadi to mujhy kangaal ker k sarrak per le aaye gi lagta hea" I shook my head.

"So what it's your wedding man, ek bar honi hea is mein to kanjoosi na ker yar" he countered making a face.

"Per kehrcha buhat ziada ho raha hea Hussain, I mean why to book such a fancy hotel for the ceremony? In fact I wanted a simple nikah and then a decent place for valima that's all. Ye itni grand mehndiyan shendiyan ye sab.... Faltoo yar!" I made a face disapprovingly.

"Han to merey bhai tu samajh na k tera simple nikah he ho raha hea, humein to enjoy kerne dey or tu fiker na ker, terey honeymoon k liye pesey bach he jane hen" He smirked and I rolled my eyes. He was literally spending money without thinking, it was his savings and I didn't want to waste it for my wedding. But usey samjhana is like near to impossible.

"or wesey bhi mera pesa tera pesa koi alag to hea nai. Aj mein laga raha hoon kal apni bari per tujh se double nikalwaoon ga saley! tention ni leni" Hussain smiled and I nodded knowingly. "Zaroor zaroor!"

"Chal tu ker bhai jo dil mein aaye tery. Ludiyan dal tu meri taraf se" I said, defeating in front of him.

Hussain was about to respond when Arsalan came walking into the lounge. He was coming in the evenings for tuition and Maya has already developed a great bond with the kid, khair kid to na khaiye, he was a lamba trannga to-be marad but was innocent at heart.

"Hussain bhai have you seen Maya?" He came towards us and addressed Hussain who looked at him with a frown and then me with annoyance.

"Why are you asking me? mein jeib mein le ker ghoomta hoon Maya ko?" Hussain spatted as expected and I smiled the way Arsalan backed off.

"uh- Nai wo to mein ne wesey he pooch liya tha. Wesey ap jitney handsome hen do char ko jeib mein le ker ghoom he saktey hen" Arsalan grinned idiotically and Hussain glared him.

"Arsalan?!" Before he could run for his dear life Maya came from the gallery into the lounge, wiping her hands from the corner of her duppatta. "do minute mein nai thi to bus uthne ka bahana mil gaya tumhen" she eyed him and he smiled.

"Actually I wanted to leave, Mom just called we have to leave for somewhere. And I promise I will learn the test" He assured Maya.

"You better Mr. Arsalan Chaudhry werna I will kill you with my bare hands" Maya threatened him who laughed before frowning at her.

"Maya Avinash Thukral! Tum ek ni-dar, bahadur, jawan-mard, hattey kattey, mustaqbil k honihaar doctor per hath uthao gi? Kia tumhen zara baraber bhi haya na aaye gi?"

"Oye dramebaz! Doon gi na yahan se ek to sari adakari bahir nikal aaye gi. If you are going to flunk in the test this time I am seriously going to behead you" Maya showed him a punch and Arsalan quickly bowed down, keeping his palm over his chest.

"I will inn sha Allah get the best grades. Siraf tumharey liye Maya! Siraf tumharey liye!" He boasted flaunting his best and was about to do more when Maya twisted his ear and he groaned.

I caught Hussain staring them two absentmindedly but the shocking thing was that strange smile over the corner of his lips and just then I realized he wasn't staring them but.... her. He averted his gaze from them and suddenly found me staring him, the smile faded at once. I frowned at his behavior. beta chor pakra gaya ub jitna frown ker le tu Saley!

"Why don't they just go somewhere else and do this drama?" Hussain almost talked to himself and I chuckled the way he was covering.

"Maya ka to pata naheen Arsalan ko soch raha hoon k tumharey jahez mein de doon" I joked and Hussain looked at me with a was-that-a-joke? Look. I chuckled shaking my head at his angry-for-no-reason expressions.

His gaze was still there following them to the exit, Maya bade Arsalan a good bye and turned towards us with a wide smile on her face but it wiped off slowly as she caught Hussain staring her and her pace slowed down and then she stopped in her tracks.

There was something in their gaze for each other, I don't know about Maya but Hussain's glare was definitely not what we were used to of, as if there was a strange kind of emotion, trying to convey a message which was ambiguous to his heart as well.

I felt like the monkey in the middle so I cleared my throat and Maya smiled at me, averting her gaze from Hussain. "So, list is ready?" she asked.

"Poorey ek kilometer lambi list" I showed her the roll and she giggled.

"So what else did you expect Shehry, after all it's your big day you should be happy that so many people are coming to give you two their blessings, no?" She stated and I nodded smiling.

"I think it's a total waste of time; wedding is just about two people not about a whole crowd, gathers in a hall, eats, dances, criticize and goes back home forgetting about what has happened a few hours back" Hussain objected and I gawked at his face, a moment back he was taking side of exactly the same thing and now..... whats wrong with him? why this bipolarity all of a sudden?

"Jab shadi do logo ne ker ke sath bhi unhon ne he rehna hea to majma ikhatta q karey insan. I don't believe in all this"

"Khushiyan batni chaiyen Hussain, they get increase" Maya softly said, there was no satire or sarcasm this time. "Apney to apney hotey hen their presence makes us stronger and happier"

"I don't need that strength at least" Hussain shrugged the topic off and then addressed me. "Chal phir I will look for a rest house which will be near our place, convenient ho jaye ga or cards ka order bhi de aoon ga mein aj he."

"Mujhy to qasam se tum logo ne chae wala samajh rakha hea, bus jab dekho fermaishen aa jati hen. Huhn!" Maha literally thumped the tray on the table and I laughed. "Bus ya to papers detey raho, perhtey raho ya phir chae banatey raho" she added.

"Chae wala na kaho Maha, izzat se nam lo you know even a chae wala can become a celebrity now a days" I said, taking my cup and Maha rolled her eyes plopping down with Hussain who wrapped his arm around her.

"Or phir tum lerkiyan na un chae walon ko Facebook or Instagram per dekh ker drool ker rahi hoti ho, by saying oh my God! He is so handsome! Idiots!" Hussain mocked and Maha gave him a punch in his abs making him chuckle.

"You really think low about us girls, no?" Maya looked at Hussain and he looked back at her.

"I don't think about girls. Not at all" Hussain fired back arrogantly and Maya frowned.

"But you do think about me" she countered casually and I actually held the sip of my tea from spilling out from my mouth, looking at Hussain's flushed plus raged plus effed up face. "Uh- I mean apparently, no?" Maya quickly corrected looking at me and Maha.

"Hussain, you don't even think about Khizrah bhabi? That's bad you know she really likes you" Maha turned her head a little looking straight at his face, who was still looking like a little lost.

Ye ho kia raha hea merey masoom se bhai ko? Ironic I know.

And before Hussain could reply my phone started to ring. My hands were occupied with one holding the mug and the other busy sorting out that wahiyaat patties, I decided to push the speaker on.

"Hello?"

"Hello Mr. Shehryar Asif?"

"Yes, its me"

"Mr Shehryar I am Rao Furqan, SHO Cant" He introduced and I looked up, all three pair of eyes at me. "You have to come at police station" he informed me.

"O janab, mera koi bacha nai guma" Must be a prank call or something.

"Sir actually a man has arrived here and has confessed that a couple of weeks back he kidnapped you from the airport and after physical torture he left you at some deserted place of the outskirts of the city" Rao Furqan explained. I looked at Hussain who looked rather relaxed, my frown went deeper.

"SHO sahab, ap usey janey den. Na mein ne koi FIR report karai thi na mujhy kisi ko jail karani hea, raat gai baat gai. You please let him go" I said. Maya's had the disapproving look at her face while Maha constantly poking her index in my bicep. pagal ho kia? Ander karao usey, chitter jootey perrwao. Mujhy le chalo sath itna maroon gi k nani yad aa jaye gi Saley ko

"Shut up Maha" I snubbed her and then looked down at the phone. "Sir you may let him go, I don't need him to be punished as he has already confessed so there is nothing left for me to do with him"

"But still you have to come for some formalities" he said and I rolled my eyes.

"O sir ji tussi jan do ghareeb nu. Or formalities aapey he ker leo" shaking my head I swiped the call off. And found Maya and Maha glaring at me.

"khawateen ziada jazbaati na hon ap log, I know what I did and why I did. He didn't beat me for his pleasure; he got those orders from...." I hesitated a little, looking at Maya.

"Some fucking coward who doesn't have the guts to stand like a man and use his bloody tongue" Hussain spoke gritting his teeth as he got up. I sighed helplessly looking up at my brother.

"I am going to order the cards, will send you the samples approve one. I will be late, don't wait for me over dinner" and with that he marched towards the room.

"He can use bad words and that's okay but if I utter a single syllable you put on the whole roof over your head Shehry" Maha complaint and I rolled my eyes. "That's not fair, this is utter favoritism okay." she pointed her index at me and Maya smiled at her.

"Mein sahi keh rahi hoon na Maya? Shehry loves him more than me, that's why he always overlooks his misbehavior" Maha made a face as she pouted and I actually laughed at her silliness.

I slid towards Maha, wrapping an arm around I brought her closer to me. "Meri jan ki totii, naraz na hua ker samjha ker, wo to khota hea sunta ee nai kuch barey bhai ki per tu to shezaadi hea meri" maha seemed to melt a little. But then she shoved my arm aside and got up. "Don't butter me okay"

But her smile made me smile even wider and warmer.

"Maya api, I need to show you practical book. I suck at making those arteries and veins please help me" She begged. Maya smiled getting up. "On one condition" she demanded and Maha smiled broadly. Anything for the completion of my book"

"You make Maggie I make the book" Maya put her condition and Maha snapped her fingers quickly accepting. "Two minutes!"

"Mein bhi khaoon ga" Maha ran towards the kitchen excitedly and I called back.

Hussain

"Are you sure you want to let him go?" The SHO looked at me with strange astound expression.

"Where to signature?" I asked, ignoring his question which he repeated for the tenth time in past half hour of the formalities. He handed me the file, I did my signatures. All that time, knowing the fact that the man responsible for my brother's pain was there in the lock up right at my back.

My hand fisted, holding the pen firm as I did my signature and then dropped it on the paper as I got up from the chair. Shaking hands with the officer I left the police station with one last glance at the man in the lock up who was looking back at me shock and confusion.

....

He came out from the police station, looked around here and there before jogging down the stairs and marched towards the exit. Quietly starting the engine I followed him, who gave hand to an auto and stepped in.

I followed until the auto went to a rather deserted area; it was pitch dark with hardly any road lights in sight. The auto turned into a street and getting the chance, I sped up and over took the auto. It came to halt with a sudden jerk as the driver pushed on the brakes hard. Jumping down from the car I walked towards the auto where the driver was all set to start a fight.

"Come out!" ignoring the driver I addressed the man behind who got back at once, looking at my face.

"Sahab! Pee ker chala rae thy kia?" The driver yelled.

"I said come out" I raised my voice and when he didn't move I shoved the door aside, held him by the collars and dragged him out from the auto.

"ye kia ker rahe ho sahab!?"

"Tum!" I looked back at the driver, still holding onto the collars. "Niklo yahan se" I ordered the auto driver who looked between both of us in shock and worry. "I SAID GO!"

"Or tum...." I looked back at the man in my grip, he had fear in his eyes and I loved that. "teri botiyan ker k tere us kameeney Dev k pas puhancha doon ga, us ki himat kese hui merey bhai ko nuqsan puhnchaney ki!" my fist shoved the side of his face dislocating his jawline. I heard movement, the auto started and then gone.

"M-mein ne bus orders poorey k-kiye thy. M-mera koi wasta nai tu-tumharey bhai k sath" he stuttered as he tried to get up but I hovered over him, keeping him in place. I dunno how many times I punched his face until he stopped making any kind of voice. I was panting as I stopped and got up.

His head was moving left and right with painful quiet cries coming out from his throat. Bending down I held him by the collars and pulled him up on his feet as I glared into his dying eyes.

"aesey he maar ker kisi sarrak per phenk aya tha na tu merey bhai ko? Saley hadiyan torr ker hath mein pakra doon ga teri agar Shehry k nazdeek bhi bhatka tu. Samjha?!" I jerked him and he gave a faint nod. Blood drops dropping down from his mouth and forehead down to his shirt, his head hanging down and he was getting heavier in my grip.

"I wish I could kill you, finish you right here right now but....

I pushed him back and he fell down, still moving his head in pain. I looked down at my knuckles and found them scarlet. Ignoring the pain, I took out my phone and called the ambulance before leaving.

....

Before parking the car I looked down at myself, examined my shirt and found the traces of red here and there. Shitt! Quickly taking it off, I turned it into a small ball and tried my best to keep it hidden.

My knuckles were paining, and the cold was making it even worse. I critically checked if shehry or Maha were awake but there was utter silence inside. I stepped in cautiously and quickly walked towards the stairs, I decided to wash my shirt before anyone could get to know.

Quickly sprinting upstairs I walked towards the laundry room finding the lights turned on I slowed down as I felt movements.

Mujh se milne k wo kerta tha bahane kitney

Mujh se milne k wo kerta tha bahane kitney

Ub guzarey ga merey sath zamaney kitney

My feet slowed down even more as I crept towards the door partly ajar, I stopped with the door and stood by the wall

Tum naya zakhm lagao tumhen is se kiya hea

Bherne waley hen abhi zakhm puraney kitney

Ub guzarey ga merey sath zamaney kitney

Maya was busy humming the song in full swing; was aimlessly observing the front wall while leaning back with the pillar. One foot resting with the pillar at her back while the other constantly tapping on the floor, she had worn the anklets again. Her hands shoved inside the side pockets of her grey hoodie and her head covered with the hood.

"Mmm mujh se milne k wo kertaaa..... " in the middle of the sentence she suddenly twisted over one of her heel not letting me walk back and then stopped in the mid way, held herself hardly from falling down as she caught me staring her right in front of her and a shriek escaped her lips. "tum?!" she quickly covered her mouth with both her palms as I frowned at her over reaction.

"when did you come back? And what are you do....." she stopped as her gaze roamed down from my face, I realized how cold it was and I stupidly came upstairs in vest. "tumhen waqai thand nai lagti ya sach mein aag itni hea k garam rehty ho her waqt?"

"kis kisam ka behooda sawal hea ye?" I fired back at her silly interrogations and about to move forward when I realized I was holding my blood stained shirt and there she was a damn drama thing! She would spill the beans.

"Soch behooda hea tumhari mein ne to bus poocha tha" she backed off a step as I took one towards her angrily. Pouting a little she turned and shut the door of the machine.

I got the chance and quickly walked towards my bin to hide the shirt but suddenly it got stuck somewhere and when I turned, I found Maya standing almost on my face holding the shirt from the other corner, with her eyes popped out as she stared down at the shirt.

"what is this?" she asked in a shocked, suspicious tone and then frowned up at me. "Hussain?" she inquired further as I remained quiet, trying to come up with something.

"leave it" I tried to pull it off her grip but she seemed firm. I gave her a warning glare but she rather took a step nearer, somebody inside me stirred a little as her gaze, very serious examined my face roaming it from feature to feature. My jaws clenched together as she stood a couple of inches apart from me. I looked away from her face.

"You had a fight?" her words made me look back at her at once, Maya was now looking down at my bruised knuckles and when she looked back at my face my expressions assured her suspicion. "did you go to the police station?" she further added, anger started to built up inside me despite those strange feelings.

"this is not your concern" I pulled my shirt off her grip and moved back when she quickly came and stopped me.

"Hussain you are hurt" she said with in a low gasp as she tried to take my hand when I moved it back. "Am fine" I lied and moved to the washing machine. Opening the door I shoved my shirt inside before turning it on.

I could feel her presence there, and then after a minute she backed off. When I turned around Maya was no where. I let out a sigh of relief.

Maya

Quietly I walked back upstairs holding the box, and his shirt while mentally cursing the idiot to put himself into something like that. The laundary room was empty, machine was till working. I looked out and found him standing with the terrace; puffs of smoke oozing out from his mouth and slowly dissolving into the thin air. He was still in a vest and his jeans. Crazy psycho!

"Wear it" reaching near him I uttered and he quickly turned, as if wasn't expecting me again. And my eyes caught sight of the little thing between his lips which he swiftly took out holding it in his fingers. "I didn't ask for this" he stated, dropping down the cigarette on the floor and put it off with his shoe.

"Us ko maar aaye ho na? ghussa nikaal liya na? agar nai nikla ghussa to lo, khari hoon tumhare samney jo kuch reh gaya nikalna mujh per nikal do. So that you can stop with this stupid behavior of yours. Because you accept it or not this is disturbing us all Hussain. Your anger and this fire inside you is not only burning you, but your loved ones as well. Socho agar Shehry ko pata chala to...

"Stop!" my words muffled inside my mouth as he at once put his finger over his lips, hushing me up. He was getting on my nerves. Serioulsy! "You are not going to tell him" was his orders.

"And why would I listen to your damn orders? Who are you Mr.? President of my state, or my guardian or the one am accountable to?" I blurted out angrily. "In fact mein abhi Shehry ko bataoon gi...." I threatened him and turned around when Hussain grabbed my arm and I had to stop as he pulled me back. I was about to protest when he started walking towards the room, pulling me at his back.

My anklets making noise, protesting. "Hussain hath choro mera" but he didn't listen, brought me to the laundry room, shut the door with his foot and almost threw me on the old rocking chair placed in one corner before he bent down, hovering over me with his hands firmly placed on the either hand rests. Making sure I won't escape. I looked straight into his eyes as he glared down at me.

"Shehry is my brother, whatever I did for him or I will ever do for him is none of any one's concern Maya" the way he took my name, my breaths started to get heavier. "mein us k liye jan doon ya jan loon, tumhen beech mein bolney ki zaroorat naheen"

"What you do is not my concern but if you will hurt yourself I will take notice not as Maya but as a doctor as a human" I tried to convince him, he kept glaring back into my eyes with the same posture. My back was so pressed with the wood that it started to hurt at one point.

Enough!

"Quietly wear it, and behave like a human... a normal human so that I can dress up your hand, its bleeding" I tried to move a little, as I pressed the shirt to his chest. After a few moments he stood back straight. I quickly got up and picked up the aid box fallen over the pile of clothes.

"Don't care about me, you don't have to" I heard him saying.

"I do care. I can't help it I promised Ammi to....." Shitt! I stopped in the middle, cursing myself mentally. I turned facing him; he was frowning suspiciously at me. Slowly his frown faded and his expressions softened, he held the shirt and wore it quietly.

With out a word, I carefully held his hand, bringing it up I examined it. "The blood has clotted, if you are not going to wash the bruise it will pain a lot" I almost talked to myself.

"Are you seriously doing it as a doctor?" he asked with a frown and I frowned in response too. "Do you think or feel about every patient of yours in the same way?" he further added, I was still holding his hand.

"Nai you are special" I stated. "a special case you know, bigrra hua case I meant" I explained and he rolled his eyes. I started to wash his bruise and trust me he didn't even budge a little. Bhagwan! Man of steel he was. I was right!

"I wish it wasn't some dog of your brother, I wish it was your brother himself. I would have chopped his...

"Dev isn't my brother" I cut him through and looked up at his afce. "Shiva is my brother, whatever Dev does is not my fault or Shiva's fault Hussain, my dada would never think of harming anyone. He gave my responsibility to your brother because he did see something in him. He trusted him. Why would he try to harm him then?" Thinking about Dada my eyes started to get itchy. I looked down; there was complete silence other than the sound of machine.

"My dada is the best man I have ever known, wo aesa kuch nai ker saktey"

I kept dressing his knuckles when my tear dropped down over his skin; I quickly wiped the tears coming while still looking down. Once I was done I quickly packed the aid box, I couldn't look up.

"Don't let it get wet" I instructed him, I wanted to just run away from the place hide somewhere and cry my heart out. But Hussain stopped me, once again grabbing my wrist and I was shocked at how soft and careful his touch was unlike anyother time. It was for a brief moment and then he let my hand go.

"Am sorry"

His words made me turn around; I looked at his face in utter shock and confusion.

"I didn't mean to offend your dada, I hate you not him" he spoke and I stared his face, he looked down at his dressing touching the bandage.

"Tum kitni nafrat kerty ho mujh se?"

"Utni he jitni tum kerti ho gi mujh se"

"mein tumse nafrat nai kerti Hussain"

"phir kia kerti ho? Muhabbat?" he fired back and I frowned, suddenly going off guard. Definitely there was nothing like love between us but his sudden inquisition made me speechless and for a few silent awkward moments I blinked my eyes while he kept his gaze on my face.

"Well, I've got better taste" thankfully something came out of my lips and my voice didn't tremble.

Hussain smirked with a low chuckle. "Am glad you have" and then turned towards the machine looking down at the timer. His fingers tapping over the cold metal while he waited for the timer to beep! I stood there unable to decide I should leave or stay?

You better leave Maya! I thought and turned holding my aid box when I heard him at my back. "Who told you that I write?" my feet freeze and I bit hard over my lower lip. Shitt! Ye bhi isey abhi he poochna tha? I could feel his presence at my back. "I never told anyone, Siraf Ammi janti theen" he added, I slowly turned and found his expressions softening with a frown on his forehead.

Hussain had never talked about his Mom or dad to me. This was a first!

"Acha? You can write? Really? I never knew that. It's great" I grinned but had to wipe it off when he kept a straight face and then he stepped past me.

"I wanted to be a writer. I wanted to write for Ammi, she had a dream watching me a successful writer one day" his back was turned towards me; I could feel the nostalgia the remorse in his tone.

"Then make her dream come true" I urged him softly, he shook his head still facing the ajar door.

"I promised to give her my first book; she was my first and only reader, my first ever fan" I felt the pain laden smile over his lips as I walked around and stood by him. "But she is no more now, wo chali gaeen sarey khuwab chikna choor ho gaye, aj bhi chubhtey hen meri aankhon mein Maya"

The way my name sounded this time....heart-stirring!

There was pitch silence with the faint sound coming from the machine. I could feel his chest moving, with his heart aching inside. We stood there quietly in our place; I was mentally trying to come up with words worth uttering. Gulping down a little, I slowly touched his arm and felt the shiver against my fingers.

"She must be looking down at you Hussain; watching you, still loving you, still dreaming the same for you. You can still make her wishes come true and make her proud. It's your duty towards your parents Hussain. You don't stop loving them, then why to give up in their dreams?" Hussain looked down at me, my hand still over his arm.

His gaze roamed very slowly from my eyes to my lips and the shadow lingering in his eyes sent a shiver down my spine. I wanted to move back, but my feet frozen in their place then suddenly the stupor ended when the timer beeped.

Hussain averted his gaze, his expressions lost as if he was mentally somewhere else and has just come back to reality. I pulled back my hand blinking my eyes, he did the same.

He walked back to the machine opened the door and was about to take the shirt out when I beat him to that, bending down near him I could smell his scent but had to ignore the messed up feelings. "Keep your hand dry" I took out his shirt, warm and a little damp against my cold skin, it felt great. Getting up I quietly spread it over the Metal stand placed in one corner.

I heard him shutting the door of the machine.

I tried my best my anklets won't make much noise as In silent awkwardness we walked to wards the door; he let me walk out first and followed me to the stairs quietly. Silence could be so audible, I never knew. It was screaming in my ears, perhaps his as well.

Reaching downstairs he walked towards his room and I strode towards the gallery when I stopped and looked at him opening the door of his room.

"And stop smoking, it reduces life time or agar tumhari zindagi kam ho gai to Maya se badla kesey lo ge?" he looked at me as I addressed him. "If you want to take revenge, stay healthy and for that quit smoking Hussain" I added and found something astonishing, strikingly shocking creeping up to his lips.

Smile?

"Point to hea" he agreed with that small but astonishing smile on his lips, a light frown was there on his forehead. "Will try to quit" he nodded and then stepped inside his room, shutting the door at his back.

Leaving me stunned, stupefied with my heartbeats racing inside.

He smiled? Bhagwan aj to chamatkaar ker dala tum ne!

....

Hayee he smiled. Finally something is cooking there, no? what do you think guys?

How was the chapter? It was a short but quick update
