Chapter Thirty-One: Lucky Boy

Back at the train, Sean pulled himself up. The door of the caboose had bars and when he tried to open it, he yelped and ducked when he saw the glint of a gun barrel inside. A bullet dinged off the bars of the window, missing him by inches. Thinking quickly, Sean ran to the side of the caboose. Peeking around it, he saw the ladder that led to the roof. Hesitating to go for it, he finally made up his mind when the door was kicked open. Grabbing the ladder, Sean swung out over the rushing ground to climb up the ladder. The wind tugged at him to try pulling him off, but he managed to reach the roof and scrambled to run across the top. The roof was peppered with fire everywhere that his boots hit the roof. Fueled by adrenaline, Sean picked up his pace and jumped from the caboose to the next train car roof. Behind him, he heard doors opening and people yelling out. "He's on the roof! Shoot him!" Glancing back briefly, he saw people trying to climb up the ladders to chase him down. Grinning, Sean uttered to himself. "Alright. Let's do this." Putting his long legs to work, Sean ran across the train car and jumped to the next. Landing a bit unsteadily, Sean tried to get his balance, when a man reached the top of the ladder near him and struggled to withdraw his pistol.

Without thinking, Sean grabbed the ladder handle for support, sending a swift kick to the man's face. The man fell back off the ladder. Catching movement to his left, Sean gasped and flinched as a gun went off. Whirling around, Sean started running again as a man on the roof yelled out. "STOP! You're under arrest!" Ignoring the man, Sean bolted for the next train car, counting the train cars ahead of him to the one with Nathan. Someone surprised him by clipping his leg in his jump, causing him to hit the next train car chest first. Clawing at the roof, Sean tried to get his leg up until he saw men getting up the ladders ahead of him. They stomped toward him to grab him, but with a deep exhale, Sean let himself slide backward. Gripping the edge of the roof at the last second, he let himself hang before dropping down before another barred door. A man on the ladder cursed, yelling out. "He's going down! Wilson! He's coming your way!" Yanking the door open, Sean slipped inside and dropped into a low crouch. A deputy inside fired a shot where his head would have been, before Sean tackled into him. Slamming him against the other door, Sean pulled out every move Nathan taught him to knock the gun from the guy's hand.

Once the gun was out of his hand, Sean gripped the man's arm and quickly flipped him over him and away from the door. The man hit the floor hard on the flat of his back, while Sean quickly dashed through the door before he could recover. Jumping over the small gap between the train cars, Sean went to the next door. Reaching for the handle, Sean yelped as someone dropped behind him and wrapped their arms around his neck. The man tightened his arm on him but wasn't prepared for Sean to grab the man's arm and heft his legs up to kick the door. The force of Sean kicking the door sent the deputy holding him stumbling backward. The deputy fell over the gap between the cars, his hold Sean releasing to keep himself from falling off the train. Sean quickly sat up off him, scrambling back toward the door as the deputy snapped out. "You crazy fucker!" Opening the door, Sean panicked when he saw a deputy inside. The man extended out his gun hand, only to have Sean slam the door on his arm. The deputy screamed in pain, allowing Sean to swipe the gun from him before reopening the door and yanking the guy out into the recovered deputy behind him.

Running into the room, Sean slammed and locked the door behind him. Inside the train car, prisoners that were in small cages against the wall stood up in surprise. One or two reached out to grab him, but he dodged their hands and used the other door to smack another deputy out of the way. Sean leapt over the gap, but the other door opened, and the man opened fire. Forcing Sean to throw the gun he'd collected at the deputy to buy him time to run for the side of the train. Hopping over the rail, Sean grabbed the ladder and swung himself onto it. Climbing up it faster than he thought possible. At the top, a deputy aimed a gun at him and snapped out. "It's over, Lucky Jack! You've got nowhere to go." Sean tried to think of a way out, but he'd been cornered. The deputy grabbed his wrist, pulling him up from the ladder. The deputy kept ahold of his wrist, then twisted his arm to turn him around. The deputy fumbled with his cuffs. While Sean's eyes were forced on the deputy heading over to help. Sean's free hand moved toward his gun, prompting the other deputy to yell out as he lifted his gun. "HEY! Don't even think about it!"

Giving the deputy a smirk, Sean jerked his hand, triggering the deputy to shoot. Instead of going for his gun, Sean dropped his body to the ground, causing the bullet to shoot the deputy holding his wrist. Standing back up, Sean bolted toward the man with the gun. The deputy braced himself and pulled the trigger again. The bullet hit Sean in the shoulder, moments before Sean dived feet first across the roof. The deputies on the other train car started to run away with wild screams. Staying low on the roof, Sean flinched as the tunnel roof whizzed over him in breathtaking speed. The deputy that shot him had no time to drop and was completely slammed off the train. The loud chugging of the engine echoed deafeningly off the walls of the long dark tunnel. It was so dark that Sean was afraid to move. The deputies in the train car thought he was moving on though, because their bullets started to pepper the roof near his boots and gradually moved farther away. Holding his bleeding shoulder, Sean whispered to himself. "Almost there... Mark could do it... Come on, Sean... Move." Clenching his teeth, Sean shifted to crawl across the roof on his belly. He moved slowly and quietly.

As the train raced out of the tunnel, Sean was temporarily blinded by the light. Forcing himself though, Sean started to run over the tops again. With just one more train car left, Sean slowed down. He could hear the deputies around the door telling others. "Stay alert! He's coming for Nathan. Keep him away from him!" Taking a moment to think, Sean glanced behind him and smirked out. "Am I that crazy...?" Looking back to the guarded train car, Sean chuckled out to himself. "I guess I am." Running back to the edge of the train car, Sean quickly descended to the door. Turning around, Sean bent over the gap and unhooked the train cars behind it. The lever took some force, but he got it. Jumping to the other car, Sean started to quickly turn the emergency brake wheel. The second the wheels began to squeal, Sean quickly jumped back to the other car, barely catching the rail. The train cars behind them slowed down drastically, leaving the deputies and prisoners still over there confused. Getting himself up in front of the door, Sean whistled and flicked off the guards through the window.

A group of deputies started for the roof and another for the inside of the car to get him. While Sean ducked out of sight and flipped himself over the railing. Taking a deep breath, he grabbed the train hitch and carefully started making his way under the racing train car. He was thankful for being a skinny and lanky guy. His legs were long enough to find things to brace against, while keeping a tight embrace with the underside. He tried not to think about how dangerous this way, but he'd already had some experience climbing under a train. He got a unique view of the train wheels propelling along and the rocks that the train kicked up along the tracks. Reaching the other gap of the train, Sean adjusted to put himself under Nate's train car. Then discreetly, Sean reached up to unhook the train car that was now loaded with deputies that were looking for him. Getting it unattached faster, Sean retreated from it. Crawling under Nate's train car to get to the other door. While crawling under, Sean slowed when he noticed strange bolts along the flooring. Faintly, he heard people starting to yell about the drifting train car and from inside the car, he heard chains rattling.

Risking his chance, Sean banged his fist on the wood to one of the beats to a song that he heard Hawk-Claw's tribe play. When he stopped before finishing it, he grinned when from a bit farther down he heard the response he wanted. Moving down to the spot, Sean reached up through the metal to unscrew the bolt. When he dropped the pieces holding the metal arch in place, he felt the ends get pulled up revealing two little holes. Sean could faintly see Nathan sitting over the holes. Two of Nathan's fingers slipped into the hole and Sean touched them. Giving them a little squeeze to let him know that he was ok. When Nathan pulled his fingers back, Sean withdrew his knife and eased the handle up the hole. Nathan quickly took it and Sean made his way to the other door. Reaching the other gap, Sean quickly unhooked Nate's car from the rest. When he finished, Sean pulled himself up with a strained groan. His shoulder was killing him but wasn't enough to slow him down yet. Swinging over the rail, Sean decided to let the car slow naturally from the other. Opening the door dramatically, the two guards inside jumped to their feet.

Sidestepping away from the door as they fired at him, Sean yelled back at them. "Don't make me do this guys! I just want him!" More gunfire peppered the wall, prompting Sean to crouch down. Shaking his head, Sean removed his boot and withdrew his gun from the holster. Taking a breath, Sean threw his boot into the room, causing them to flee from it as they yelled out. "What is that?!" One of the deputies made the mistake of moving too close to the iron cage that Nate was in, allowing Nate to grab him and stick the knife through his ribs. When the other man turned to aim his gun at Nathan, Sean rushed into the room and tackled him to the floor. Wrestling with the young deputy, Sean got a few good punches in before putting a gun to his head and pulling the trigger. Holding his hand in place, Sean's hand started to shake. He'd never shot anyone at such a close range before and the damage that had been done startled him. Behind him, Nathan swiped the keys to the chains and the cage off his dead guard. Easing out, Nathan's hand moved to stroke down Sean's gun hand. While Sean jerked and tried to point the gun at him, Nathan was already ready for him. Gripping his wrist to keep the gun away, while telling him calmly. "Easy, Tiger. It's ok. Are you hurt?"

Sean could barely process the question. Easing him up to his feet, Nathan pried the gun from him and pulled him into a hug. Sean accepted it with a slight hiss of pain. Groaning himself, Nathan limped a bit as he looked around and asked Sean. "Where are the others? Mark?" Slowly bringing himself back, Sean told him honestly. "At the mine." Pulling from him, Nathan peeked outside and asked curiously. "Escape plan?" Shrugging, Sean blurted out. "You're looking at it." Biting his lip, Nathan huffed out. "Ok. We gotta get to the mine and regroup. But first... We gotta get off this train." Moving out of sight, Nathan started turning the break wheel, causing the car to jerk and the wheels to squeal. Tumbling forward to his knees, Sean winced out. "Damn it! Warn me would ya!" Peeking back into the car, Nathan smirked back. "I'm slowing the train car. There." Flicking him off, Sean staggered up to his feet, asking dryly. "What now? The horses will be long gone from here and the deputies will be coming..." Taking his arm, Nathan helped him off the train car, rushing out. "Now we run. That way. Go."

Nathan took off faster than Sean, while Sean snapped out. "I can't run anymore! I've been running a lot today, Nate. I'm drained..." Slowing to a stop, Sean panted out heavily. "I'm done." Skidding to a stop, Nathan rushed back to him and cupped Sean's red face. Seeing Sean was completely spent, Nathan reluctantly looked out at the flat horizon in all directions, before smirking out. "You really are a lucky charm, Jack!" Dropping his hands from Sean, Nathan cheered as he ran off in a different direction. Blinking, Sean turned to look for himself. Riding up on them in the distance was Hawk-Claw. Chuckling to himself, he watched Hawk-Claw ride up fast and slid off the side of the horse to embrace Nathan. Nathan slammed into Hawk-Claw the second he touched the ground, causing both to fall into the tall grass. Hawk-Claw's horse slowed down, then trotted toward Sean. Reaching out to pet the horse, he quickly leaned against it to keep himself upright. Without his adrenaline, his body was starting to feel weak and painful. Guiding the horse slowly back over to the others, Sean blushed and turned his eyes away.

Nathan was passionatelykissing Hawk-Claw. Clearing his throatlightly, Sean blurted out to them. "Guys?I don't want to break this up... but Mark and the others are still missing. Weshould... go." Sitting back on Hawk-Claw'slap, Nathan chuckled out. "Ya. And I'vegot a score to settle. Let's ride." Hawk-Claw started to get up, telling them casually. "I'll drive." Scoffing, Nathan moved up to the horse and tried to hop on as heretorted. "Fuck that! I'm driving!" Before he even got a leg over, Hawk-Clawpulled him down by his belt and shot back with a smile. "My horse. I'm driving." Tossing his hands up, Sean snapped out. "I don't care who's driving! Can we go savethe others?" Swinging up on his horse,Hawk-Claw held out a hand to Sean, saying warmly. "Ya. Come on." Sean let himself get pulled up onto thehorse, before wincing out a little embarrassed as Nathan climbed on behind him. "Why am I in the middle?" Patting his hips, Nathan answeredbluntly. "Because if you fall off, youare too tired to run. I'm not. Now hold on." Holding onto Hawk-Claw, Sean exhaled to himself as the horse started totrot off in the direction of the mine. "Hangon, Mark. We're on our way." To BeContinued...
