Chapter Three

The evening was silent as Magnus devoted his time to caring for his injured mother. Determined to make it up to her, after leaving her with those horrible people. He sat by her side and gently brushed her hair out of her face. Doing his best to be careful and not add anymore bruises. His phone kept going off and he glanced to see Mrs. Johnson kept trying to call and text him. He frowned and put his phone on silent before he continued to tend to his mother. Staying up all night to make sure she had everything she needed.

The next day he was tired and woke towards the afternoon, luckily he had a day off and didn't have to worry about work. He slowly opened his eyes and felt a hand on his head. He had fallen asleep in the chair by his mother, with his arms folded on the bed, and his head in his arms. He slowly raised his head and stared at his mother blankly as she gently rubbed his messy hair.

"You need rest..." she whispered and he looked around a little then glanced to her again. He sat up more and stretched before standing. "Magnus... I'll be okay..." she promised weakly. He frowned and gently set a hand on her forehead.

"Temperature is up. You have a fever." he muttered and wrapped her up in blankets before going to make her breakfast. He started cooking and constantly ignored his phone. He didn't even look at it until he had to call Ratchet. He frowned as he saw Mrs. Johnson had called him twenty times last night, texted him at least a hundred and tried calling him ten times this morning already. He thought it was an emergency and read her texts, making him frown more.

"I didn't realize this woman was so clingy." He whispered quietly and called the doctor as he ignored the woman. He told him about his mother and how she was abused by the doctors.

Ratchet yelled angrily about something and said he'd be over soon. The cop sighed shakily and closed his eyes before working on something again. He was soon lost in his thoughts and sighed again. The cop gripped the counter as he thought and debated.

He'd been stressed at work and caught another officer stealing from the station about a week or two ago. Now the gangs seemed to be forming. He rubbed his face and looked up when their was a knock on the door. He went over to answer and blinked in surprise when he saw the doctor. Did he really zone out that long?

"Hello..." the police officer said as he looked at the man. Ratchet stared at him and frowned deeply.

"Perhaps you should take a break and get some rest." The medic said as Magnus led him to his mother's room.

"I don't have time for that." He said seriously and went to her side. "Mother... Ratchet is here to help you." He whispered quietly. "He's going to look you over and make sure you're in good health." He said gently. She slowly opened her eyes and smiled a little bit.

"Hello doctor..." she whispered as she watched him. "I'm still flirting with death." She smiled a little as she looked at him tiredly.

"That's not the best idea." He muttered and put his stethoscope on before setting the bell against her skin.

"Oh..." she gasped at the cold and looked at him. "Doctor you didn't ask for my name." She smiled a little. Ratchet looked at her and raised an eyebrow as Magnus face palmed.

"Mother... please... Ratchet isn't here to flirt." He grumbled as the doctor smiled slightly at her.

"But he's such a good looking young man." She said and gently pinched his cheek. The doctor was taken aback and looked at her as he blushed with embarrassment. "Look out, I'm a cougar." She winked.

"Mother!" Magnus said, startled by her behavior. "What medication are you currently on?" He asked in alarm.

"Oh hush. I'm not on any medication. I'm just trying to have some fun while I'm actually awake. I feel better but it won't last long." She said seriously. Ratchet chuckled softly and motioned for the cop to leave.

"Don't be such a tease, Valerie. You know I only have eyes for you." The doctor winked and Magnus looked at him in shock. He left and closed the door.

"I'm losing my mind." He muttered as he went to put the house in order. He knew they were teasing but he was uncomfortable with it. For many reasons.

His phone rang and he sighed shakily as he closed his eyes. He glanced to the phone after a moment to see it was Careen. He wasn't in the mood and set his phone aside.

After a few hours, Ratchet walked over and looked at him. He gave him some instructions for her care and said he'd visit once a week. Magnus thanked him and they talked about an in home aid program. Only problem was he didn't trust anyone.

"Magnus.... if you can find someone you trust... I'll get them trained to help you out." Ratchet said seriously and looked at him. The cop thought about it and nodded slowly.

"Thank you... I'll look into that... I have someone in mind..." he admitted and thanked the doctor before the medic left. He went into the other room and scolded his mother for flirting with the doctor. She smiled as she looked at him then closed her eyes.

"It's a bit of fun." She whispered quietly as she winced. Magnus watched her intently and gently gripped her hand, before kissing it. He looked at her and checked for bruises. "The doctor already did that." She whispered and set a hand on his cheek. He looked at her with worry on his face.

"My dearest little boy..." she smiled as she watched him. "I want you to go... and get married."

"Mo-"

"No listen. You need to move forward and marry... have little children. I'll spoil them rotten." She whispered as she smiled. He stared at her and nodded slowly as tears filled his eyes.

"I.... I will..." he whispered quietly as he stared at her. "I won't let you down..." he said seriously and she huffed.

"You never do." She whispered quietly and kissed his forehead. A week went by and his mother slowly became stronger. She was able to sit up on her own and her wounds were healing.

Magnus had forgotten to contact Careen during that week. He was too busy trying to find an aid, working at the station, and caring for his mother. There was a knock on the door and he frowned deeply before answering it.

"Hello Magnus." Careen smiled brightly as she looked at him. The cop blinked in surprise then furrowed his brow. "I figured since you wouldn't answer the phone, I should come by and check on you." She smiled.

"I apologize for keeping you waiting.... but I've been terribly busy with other matters." He said seriously.

"Oh what's more important than me?" She asked as she smiled and looked at him. She moved past him into the house and he furrowed his brow more.

"I need you to leave. I'll call you when I've finished-"

"Why don't you like me anymore?" She pouted and looked at him. The man seemed surprised and furrowed his brow.

"I do care about you. I simply had to take care of a few personal problems." He said seriously and narrowed his eyes. "Which I am still trying to address." He muttered.

"Maybe... you need a distraction." She smiled a little and looked at him then kissed him. He argued for a moment then found it relaxing. He hesitated and gripped her shoulders as he kissed her. She kissed him deeply and fiddled with his shirt then worked on undoing his buttons slowly. He realized what she was doing and moved her back a little.

"What are you doing?" He asked as he looked at her. She looked at him innocently.

"Nothing. Just helping you relax." She pouted and worked on his buttons. Revealing his undershirt. He backed up a little and his back hit the wall. She giggled and fiddled with his shirt again.

"I love a man in uniform." She whispered quietly and started kissing his neck. He tensed and stiffened like a statue as he felt uncomfortable.

"C... Careen... stop." He gasped as he paled and she worked on his belt. "Careen! Stop!" He boomed as he pushed her away. He moved away from her and went to the kitchen to fix his uniform.

"What the heck, Magnus?" She asked and furrowed her brow. "You're so conceited." She muttered.

"No madam, I am not." He said as he walked back in and narrowed his eyes. "I will not have you-" he paused as he heard coughing and walked off.

"Uh excuse you?" Careen scoffed and followed him. "We were in the middle of a conversation. You don't get to just walk off and-" she stopped when she saw his mother in her room. Magnus sat by her to see what was wrong.

"Oh... is this what's occupied your time?" She asked and narrowed her eyes a little.

"This, as you've put it, is my mother and she's in need of a caretaker." He growled. The woman stopped and realized this was her opportunity.

"Well.... I could take care of her for you while you're gone." She said gently. "My name is Careen and it has the word 'care' in it." She smiled pleasantly.

"I don't think that's a good-"

"It's okay Magnus.... give her a chance." His mother said as she smiled a little and looked at him. He hesitated and glanced to the woman, he wasn't so sure about this.
