"I'm recommending you to an oral surgeon. You need to get your wisdom teeth removed." Eddie's eyes widened. Surgery? His mother was going to flip.
"Thurgery?" He questioned, speaking around the tools in his mouth.
"It's a standard procedure, they do it every day. There's nothing to worry about." He resumed his cleaning, examining his handiwork. "That should do it. You're good to go. The front desk will have your information ready." He handed Eddie a new toothbrush as he walked out.
"Name?"
"Eddie Kaspbrak," he sighed. The secretary grabbed a file, taking the top paper and handing it to him. He glanced down at it, frowning.
"Be sure to take care of that, hun. See you in six months!" She smiled. Eddie managed a half smile in return, and walked out the door.
Richie was waiting for him outside, sitting in his rusty pickup. Richie had recently gotten his license, and he saved up enough money from his job at the radio station to buy a truck. Eddie wished he could drive, but his mother would never allow that. Anyway, this way he got to spend more time with Richie.
Richie was Eddie's best friend. They did everything together, from movie nights to errands. Eddie also had a not-so-platonic crush on Richie. Eddie jumped into the passenger seat, still frowning at the slip of paper.
"Hey Eds, mind if we make a quick detour? I'm in an Oreo kind of mood," Richie suggested, unaware of what Eddie was feeling. "Eds?" Richie looked over at his best friend, trying to decipher his complex expression.
"Yeah, whatever," Eddie muttered. Richie turned his body around in the seat to face Eddie.
"Ok. What's up with you?" Richie wondered, raising an eyebrow. Eddie sighed, waving the slip of paper.
"I need surgery."
"What!? Why?" Richie exclaimed.
"My stupid wisdom teeth," Eddie groaned. "My mom's going to freak when she finds out." Richie nodded.
"What if you didn't tell her? I can take you. Tell your mom you're spending the night with me," Richie offered.
"She's not gonna like that."
"Yeah, I bet she'll really miss me," Richie grinned. Eddie rolled his eyes, scoffing.
"Beep beep, Richie." Eddie tried not to encourage the trashmouth, but couldn't help cracking a smile. He would hate to admit it, but Richie's constant jokes about his uptight mother made Eddie feel warm and fuzzy inside. He wasn't entirely sure why.
"Anyway, when is the appointment?" Richie asked.
"I've gotta make one. Could we stop there today? You can help me pick a day, if you want," Eddie offered. The curly-haired boy smiled, nodding.
"Sure. Where is it? We can go there first, my Oreos can wait." Eddie giggled, handing Richie the slip of paper with the address printed on top. He studied the address, then pulled out of the parking lot, driving to the oral surgeon's office.
When the pair arrived at the small building, they immediately noticed the odd smell you can only find in places like these. Eddie wrinkled his nose slightly, but walked up to the front desk.
"How may I help you?" The woman asked.
"Uh, hi, I'm here to make an appointment," Eddie stated nervously.
"For his wisdom teeth," Richie added.
"Ok. When would work best for you? We have openings Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and next Saturday. Anytime from 8 to 3." Eddie gulped. The open spots seemed awfully close, seeing as it was Saturday. He looked up at Richie, his eyes pleading for help.
"How about Thursday?" He suggested. Eddie nodded.
"Thursday, and what time?" She questioned.
"Maybe... 11?" Eddie squeaked.
"Alright, see you then!" She smiled kindly, handing him another slip of paper, this time with his appointment information on it. Richie have Eddie a slight nudge, and they both left the office. When they got back to the car, Eddie closed his eyes.
"Eds? You ok? You look a little pale," Richie noticed, frowning. Eddie sighed, looking down at his lap.
"I've never really had surgery before," he whispered, barely audible. "All the times I was sent to the hospital, not once did I get actual surgery. And now... it's on Thursday, Rich. That's five days away. It's all so soon, and I- I'm nervous," Eddie admitted.
"Hey, Eds, Eddie Spaghetti, it's gonna be ok. It's a minor surgery, nothing's going to go wrong," Richie insisted. He paused, in thought. "If you want, I can even stay with you. Make sure nobody hurts my Eds." Eddie's heart fluttered. He turned to look into Richie's eyes, finding nothing but truth in those chocolate orbs.
"You would do that for me?" Richie nodded. Eddie blushed, staring down at his lap. "Thanks Rich," he whispered.
~
"Hi mommy, is it ok if I stay over Richie's tonight? We gotta work on our science project," Eddie asked sweetly. Sonia Kaspbrak glanced at her son for a moment before returning her gaze to the television set.
"Fine, Eddie bear. But I don't want you getting to close to that boy. He's dirty, you hear?" She scowled.
"Thanks mommy," Eddie grinned. He grabbed his bag and bike and set off to Richie's house. He already knew the raven-haired boy's parents were out of town, as they were often, so there was no threat to Eddie's secret. He knocked on the door, checking his watch as he did so. 9:28 am.
"Hi Eds," Richie opened the door, allowing Eddie inside. "Come in, my good man!" Eddie brushed past the Trashmouth, rolling his eyes at Richie's antics. He sat down stiffly, chewing on his lip. Richie followed him in, raising an eyebrow at the nervous habit. He cleared his throat, catching Eddie's attention.
"You got an hour before we have to go. Anything you wanna do first?" Richie wondered. "Ooh, I know! Have you ever tried frozen yogurt? There's this really cool place down the street, they have a flavor that tastes like popsicles!"
"I've had frozen yogurt before," Eddie murmured. "Plus, I thought you weren't supposed to eat before surgery." Richie frowned.
"I thought you weren't supposed to eat after surgery," Richie replied. "Well, how about a movie then? Or a game?"
"We only have an hour, Rich. Maybe a game? What do you have to play?" Eddie questioned.
"We have Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, maybe Life and Yahtzee. What do you want to play?" Richie asked.
"Life," Eddie decided. Richie went down a set of stairs leading to the basement. When he returned, he was holding a rather dusty box with the Life logo nearly faded off. He set it down, blowing the dust off the top.
"R-Richie, stop!" Eddie coughed. The game was set up quickly, and they began to play.
~
"Haha! I'm retiring as a billionaire! Beat that, Eddie Spaghetti!" Richie yelled in triumph. Eddie rolled his eyes, counting up his colorful bricks of money. He compared them to Richie's, a smirk growing on his face.
"Oh, but I already did," Eddie said smugly. Richie's smirk dropped. "I got a lot of money from the seven kids stacked up in my car." Richie glanced at the clock, noticing the time.
"Holy shit, Eds we gotta go," Richie insisted, dragging Eddie out to his truck. "We're gonna be late." The appointment was in 10 minutes, but the drive was 15. Hopefully it wouldn't be a big deal.
The duo hopped out of the truck, running for the oral surgeon's office. They jumped into the waiting room, and not a moment too soon.
"Eddie Kaspbrak?" A young woman called. Eddie stood cautiously, being led into the next room. Richie was not allowed to be in the room during the surgery, but for now he wouldn't leave Eddie's side.
"Alright, so we're going to put you under, and you won't feel a thing. When you wake up, you'll be pretty out of it for awhile. No crunchy or hard foods for the next few days, stick to liquids and soft foods. I assume your friend here will be taking care of you?" Eddie glanced at Richie, who answered for him.
"Yep."
"Alright, then I'll have someone go over the rules with him. You, come with me," she beckoned towards the door, leading Eddie into the last room he would have his wisdom teeth in. He gulped nervously, but sat in the chair.
"Count backwards from 100 for me." A mask was placed over his nose and mouth, and Eddie began his countdown.
"100, 99, 98, 97..." He trailed off, knocked out by the anesthesia.
~
"Do you understand everything?"
"Yeah," Richie confirmed. Eddie had been in surgery a little over an hour now, and Richie was getting a little impatient.
"Ok, good. He should be out soon," the lady smiled, and walked away. Richie tapped his foot while he waited for Eddie to appear at the door.
After a few more minutes of waiting, Eddie finally stumbled out of the room. Richie leapt to his feet, catching Eddie before he collapsed. His eyelids were droopy, and he seemed drunk. But, Richie knew it was just the anesthesia.
"Heeeeeyyyyyyy," Eddie slurred, reaching up to punch Richie's cheek. "You're pretty," he mumbled. Richie raised an eyebrow in surprise.
"And you're out of it. C'mon, let's go home." Richie half led, half carried Eddie out to his truck, pushing him up into the seat and strapping him in. They started the drive back to Richie's house.
"Richieeeeeeeeeee," Eddie whined around the cotton in his mouth. "I want a smoothie." Eddie crossed his arms, pouting. Richie chuckled at his best friend's childish behavior, all while pulling into a Starbucks drive-thru.
"Could I have one strawberry smoothie with extra whipped cream?" The employee mumbled something into the receiver, and Richie drive up to grab the smoothie for Eddie.
"Are you happy now? Can we go home?" Richie asked hopefully. Eddie nodded, sipping happily on his strawberry treat.
"I love you, Chee," Eddie said, yawning sleepily. Richie almost crashed his truck. Eddie... loved him? The curly-headed boy smiled, echoing Eddie.
"I love you too, Eds."
