Eddie stared into the mirror. He poked his tummy, making it jiggle like jello.
Eddie Kaspbrak hated himself.
He hated every roll, every flap, every ripple on his thigh. He was fat. Sonia Kaspbrak insisted it was only baby fat, of course the thought never crossed her mind that Eddie could ever be pudgy. Her son? Never. Even though she was quite fat herself.
Eddie turned his head violently, trying not to watch the tears streaming down his face. He was weak, so helpless and needy.
But what can you do about that?
Eddie knew the answer. It was foolproof, why hadn't he thought of it before? He nodded his head sharply, deciding in his head that he would put his plan in action.
~
There wasn't school the next morning, it was summer. But in the Kaspbrak household, young Eddie was waking up for a long day of work. He had planned to head down to the Derry gym, to work out for a little while. He skipped breakfast, instead drinking a glass of water.
Eddie worked out at the gym, running on the treadmill until he saw spots blur his vision. He sat, taking a breather and getting some water from the fountain before starting a new exercise. He sat on the machine, pushing the pad with his legs. It exhausted him rather quickly, and Eddie decided he was done for the day.
He walked down the street, oddly dizzy. Chalking it up to his unfit body beginning to train, Eddie ignored it. The world was spinning slowly, tilting around like the pinball machine whenever Richie played. But Eddie pushed though. He had to. He wasn't going to ruin his plan on the first day! Sure, there's going to be some bumps along the way, but that's the price you have to pay to be fit.
At least, that's what Eddie thought.
By the time Eddie had gotten to his house, sweat shone on his upper lip. He could barely see 5 feet in front of him. He sat on the front porch, closing his eyes for a moment. Next time I won't exercise as hard.
Once his breath had been caught and the world was no longer a spinning top, Eddie went inside. The humidity rampaged, trapped by the four walls of the Kaspbrak home. The thickness of the air was suffocating. Eddie sighed, dropping down to his bed. He was exhausted, and for good reason. The minute his head hit the pillow, he fell asleep.

Richie threw another rock at Eddie's window. Where was he? They had made plans almost a week ago to hang out with the other losers. When Eddie was a no show, Richie was sent to fetch him.
Of course, Richie didn't mind. He had always favorited Eddie, the smaller boy's mannerisms and quirks really grew on him. But in that moment, Richie was not happy with him.
After 3 minutes of waiting outside the window, Richie couldn't wait any longer. Had Eddie forgotten? It didn't seem likely. But why else would he not've shown up? Richie felt a bud of concern blossom in his chest. Was there maybe something wrong with Eddie?
Richie shook his head. No, he couldn't think like that. More likely Eddie had gotten a paper cut and been rushed to the hospital. He snorted, a ghost of a smile gracing his features. But he would check on eddie, just in case.
Richie hooked his fingers on the little divot in the wall. He climbed up, reaching Eddie's window (which he knew wasn't locked, since he himself had broken the lock a few weeks prior). He pried the small pane of glass away from its designated spot in the wall, creating a big enough space for Richie to climb through. He tumbled to the floor, landing heavily on the floor. The loud thump startled Eddie, bleary eyed and half conscious.
"Hiya, Eds!" Richie grinned. Eddie sat up slowly, holding his head.
"Wha?" He mumbled. He stood up, his legs quivering. Richie's grin dissolved, concern taking over his face. He raced to Eddie's side in the nick of time, catching the small boy as his knees buckled. He let out a soft groan, one that expressed pain and confusion.
"Eds. Hey, Eddie, what's wrong?"
"Nothinn', I'm ffine," Eddie responded, the subtle slur and his glazed eyes enough to spark worry in the trashmouth. He gently lay Eddie down, trying his best to figure out what was wrong with him.
"No, you're not." Richie was growing frantic, he didn't know what to do. He heard a small growl, jerking his head in shock. But Richie had no reason to be alarmed, for the growling had come from Eddie's stomach. He sighed, wondering how being hungry had caused the small boy so much trouble.
"Eds?"
"Hrmm?"
"When was the last time you ate?" Eddie looked guilty, and Richie knew he had hit a home run.
"Well..." Eddie explained his plan to Richie, who's eyes got wider and wider in disbelief.
"So you're telling me you haven't eaten since yesterday morning?" He cried. Eddie nodded, avoiding Richie's upset gaze. "Wow, Eds, that's a long time to go without food. Especially when working out."
"Yeah, but-"
"No buts, Eddie Spaghetti. You don't need to starve yourself, bubba. You're perfect the way you are," Richie explained, wrapping Eddie in a tight hug. He let out a high pitched giggle, making Richie smile. "You are so cute, do you know that?" Eddie blushed, shying away from the curly haired boy.
"Thanks," Eddie whispered, his cheeks flushed. Richie stared at him. He went into autopilot, leaning in close to Eddie. The smaller boy cocked his head in confusion. When Richie's lips touched his, Eddie flinched away, but eventually melted into the kiss. For a moment the world didn't exist, it was just Richie and Eddie, Eddie and Richie. And they went together like milk and cookies, like salt and pepper, like peanut butter and jelly.
When Eddie pulled away, breaking the kiss, both boys were red in the face. Eddie took a breath from his inhaler, never breaking the eye contact between them. Richie was the first to break the silence.
"Wow Eds, I didn't know you were as great a kisser as your mom!" He exclaimed, chuckling at his badly-timed joke. Eddie shook his head, biting back a smile.
"Whatever, Trashmouth." Richie held his hand on his heart in mock offense.
"Eddie Spaghetti, that hurts." He stood up offering Eddie his hand. "Now, why don't we get you something to eat?"
