Chapter 8 - Platform 9 3/4

"Syria," a soft voice announces. "It's time to get up, honey."

My eyes flutter open only to clench shut from the harsh light. I hear the door shut behind Andromeda. I let out a groan as I felt the deep aching in my body, an excellent way to start the day. I pull the blankets off of my body and then slowly put weight on my feet as I stand up from the bed. Stabbing pain shoots up my legs to my hips, but I force my legs to lift and move across the floor to the bathroom.

I flip on the light, brush my teeth, and scrub my face with soap. I put on a white sweater and a blue skirt. There is a knock at the door as Andromeda comes into the room. She sits me down on the blue velvet chair. Her fingers gently guide my hair into two Dutch braids going into pigtails and ties two blue ribbons on the top of each pigtail.

"Ok honey, come downstairs when you are ready," Andromeda announces as she leaves.

I pull on a pair of white socks, then slip on my black Mary Janes. I grab the brown leather trunk and exit the room that had been mine for the past weeks. I clench the rail on the stairs as I slowly walk down. I sit the trunk by the antique couch then sit at the wooden table.

I eat silently, all of the what-ifs running through my head. When I finish picking at the large bowl of fruit and yogurt, I sit my dishes in the sink and then grab the leather trunk. I follow the Tonks family to the garage, where a bright red vintage car sits. Dora and I climb in the back, and Ted and Andromeda sit in the front.

I watch the tall buildings of London as we drive past. Bright red telephone booths stand out against the brown-colored buildings. Red buses that are so tall they look like they could easily fall over by a gust of wind drive by.

We arrive at Kings Cross Station. The building has brown bricks with large arched windows.
I follow Dora out of the car and into the building. Dora helps me load my trunk and Margret into one of the trolleys. It is overly crowded; large amounts of people push past, and I fling my hand out to hold onto Andromeda's arm so as not to get swept away in the current of the people. I'm too short to see over the heads of all the people so I don't know where we are and where we are headed. We stop in front of a pillar, and an older girl with a trolley runs into the pillar and disappears. I crane my neck to try and look on the other side, but she is gone.

"The train station we need to be at is called Platform 9 3/4. You will run into the pillar, and then you will arrive on the other side," Andromeda explains.

Dora goes first; she walks into the brick pillar and then disappears. It doesn't make sense. I can start to comprehend a picture moving, but defying the laws of science is where I begin to not honestly believe these people are entirely there in the head.

"Go ahead, darling," Andromeda encourages.

I guided the heavy cart to be in line with the pillar. I look at Andromeda again. This has to be some joke.

"Go ahead, you should do it at a bit of a run the first time," she instructs with a soft smile.

The woman who had been kind to me these past weeks now wants me to run into a brick pillar. Sounds pretty familiar to becoming my family than dropping me back off at the girl's home. I turn my head to look at her and shake my head. I won't be made a fool again.

"Come on honey, you need to do it," Andromeda encourages.

"You go ahead dear, she might need to see someone else do it again before she feels more comfortable," Ted reasons.

Andromeda purses her lips before walking effortlessly through the pillar. The moment her nose touches it, it disappears, later along with the rest of her body.

I glance back over at Ted Tonks, in the time I had been with the Tonks family, he was the one I had talked to the least.

He walks over to where I'm standing, "I know it seems very strange, to be told to walk into a pillar. Andromeda grew up around magic, she had done it multiple times before her first year of being sent off to Hogwarts. The pillar will only open to wizards and witches, which you are. It will let you in. It looks like brick, but in reality it is really only a curtain that looks like brick."

I don't say anything in response to him, I just look up at him with a blank expression.

"I will go through, you can come when you are ready," he decides.

He goes through, just like the other two people, he goes without issue. I turn my head at the loud fighting of children.

"Hello Syria, nice to see you again," the smiling red headed boy says. "What are you doing waiting here, shouldn't you be on the platform?"

It only takes my vacant look for him to read through me, a type of understanding comes to his face.

"It isn't what is seems. Close your eyes and run straight, then it will just be like your running through a curtain. Here, put your ear to the pillar, you can hear them on the other side."

I press my ear to the pillar, and I can hear Dora complaining about someone at work.

"See? Just like a curtain," he reassures.

I try to give a nod, but it just comes out as my face trembling. I step back to where my cart sits. I look back over to Fred, where he gives a bright smile.

"Remember close your eyes, it is just like a curtain."

I line up the trolley till it is straight, than clench my eyes shut. I take a couple deep breathes before I pick up my feet than slam it back down on the ground till I feel a breeze go over me than stop. I turn my face behind me and open my eyes. I see the pillar is behind me, not in front of me where it had been originally. I let a smile appear on my face before I quickly mask it before I turn around.

Andromeda gives me a small smile when she sees me, but I see sadness in her eyes that I don't understand.

She pulls me into a hug, "You're going to have an amazing year. Be sure to write me when you can," she whispers.

Dora pulls me into a hug next, "If anyone decides to be stupid remember to beat them up. Oh, and keep me updated on any potential love interest,"  she adds with a wink.

My face flushes at her comment. I grab my trunk and head towards the train as Margret follows behind me.

I climb the steps of the bright red train to be met with loud laughing and reuniting of students. I pass multiple cabins, most already filled with students. I quickly walk pass a cabin with a couple snogging with the doors wide open. I see a group of girls that look my age in a cabin. I peek my head in to introduce myself, and hopefully make some new friends.

"Hello, I'm Syria. I'm a first year," I announce with a bright smile.

One of the girls looks up at me, then shakes her head in disgust. I back out of the cabin.

I walk down till I am at the last cabin, and it is completely empty. I stand on my tip toes as I lift the heavy trunk above my head and on to the rack. I sit on the bench, the side closest to the window seat. Margret jumps onto the bench and curls up beside me as I watch the families say goodbye. The train makes a whistle noise as a warning it is about to depart. Multiple kids quickly run onto the train, one even jumping on while the train had started moving.

I turn my head as I hear someone at the entrance of the cabin.

"Hello, I'm Hermione Granger. May I sit with you?"
