Twenty-Eight
Freya's POV:
"Let me go!" I growl as I continuously slam my elbow against her hand but she seemed unfazed at the hits. Almost as if she didn't feel a thing.
"Not just yet, my dear!" She drags my head through the stacked cars, feeling the metallic roughly scrape clean through my helmet until she forces us higher and flings me to the side.
I push my hands downward, slowing the fall, and fly upward once more with a glare. Here's hoping the journal lessons paid off.
I punch my fist against the palm of my hand which creates a flicker of light to emerge. I bend my middle fingers down and cross my hands from each other which causes the golden rune to appear in front of me and I couldn't help but smile in satisfaction.
"One rune? You've had the journal for almost a year now and that's the best you can do?" Inza remarked humorlessly. "How tragic. If only you had the amulet."
"I don't need the amulet to take you down."
With intricate movements, several more runes appear in front of me until I spread my arms wide. A shockwave sweeps across Inza which causes her to quickly protect herself from the attack with her cape. With the intense shockwave, it singes the cloth but sends her to crash into the ground.
She pushes herself off the ground to fly back up with a huff. "You know, I finally met that girlfriend of yours. I thought you were the one I pissed off the most but I suppose seeing you upset set her off as well." She called out, my eyes trailing to the slash marks at the ends of her cape until I watch the flowing wisps from the shockwave trickle into her gloves. Did she absorb my power? "I'll admit, she's fast. But not fast enough once I clipped those claws off of her."
My heart sinks. "You're lying."
"Am I? I'm surprised you didn't hear her screams. They were practically music to my ears." She lightly chuckles. "I wonder if the saying 'cats have nine lives' is true. It's been sometime now...but then again, she's just a human."
I aim my hands at her, shooting an energy blast but she reciprocates by doing the same. This forces the cosmic blasts to collide, creating an intensely bright light as one tried to overpower the other.
"Why are you working for him?" I angrily yell out, causing a wave to ripple through the blast. "Jordan is the reason why your husband is dead! He murdered Kent! He's only going to stab you in the back!"
"Oh, Freya." She humorlessly chuckled. "Wanna know one of the benefits of wearing the helmet of chaos over ten years? You start to care less and less about other beings to the point of losing your humanity." She calmly spoke and throughout her words, I could feel my energy in the blasts diminish. "Makes it easier to do what needs to be done."
She shoves her hands forward hard enough that causes her blasts to collide into my chest, sending me flying backward.
I couldn't even slow down because within seconds she harshly struck punch after punch to the point where it ripped through my suit. Almost to make sure I wouldn't touch the ground.
Eventually, she uppercuts my jaw, sending me flying upward until she strikes another punch against my chest which sends me to crash into the ground, creating a large crater from the impact.
I shakily try to stand but she beats me to it by slamming her fists against my chest, making me stay down.
"You are capable to do so much more with your powers, only to hold back because, what, I'm your mother? Get a grip." She yanks me by the throat to pull me up from the floor, tilting her head to the side in curiosity. "Submit."
"Sorry," I breathe out with a dry chuckle. "I'd only do it for one person."
She hums disappointedly and strikes another punch, sending me flying until I smash through the stacked cars again, knocking the tower down.
I weakly lift my head as she lands next to me with a scoff. "My dear daughter, it doesn't have to be this way. You're doing this for nothing. Imagine this: the Lord of Chaos and Lord of Order ruling side by side! You don't have to submit to Jordan, but we can work together. Like you've always wanted! We can make the world a better place! Help them understand that they can be a part of something bigger or suffer the consequences. I can teach you more than what a tiny book tells you."
She hovers her hand over my chest as her hand brightly glowed, feeling the trails of energy travel to her hand which causes an agonizing pain to rupture my chest.
"Agh—!" I cry out, feeling the air practically flow from my lungs.
She slams her hand downward at my chest, feeling the surges of energy return back and I let out a choked gasp. "You see how easy it is to take away your life energy? Imagine doing that to an entire state. An entire country! With our powers combined, we can take over the galaxies! Bend colonies to our will!"
I scoff. "No one likes a dictator."
"Ah yes. I tend to forget that the daughter of Kent Nelson has his pathetic heart."
"I'm not only my father's daughter." Despite my body practically begging me to stay down, I still use my elbow to prop myself up. "I...am Doctor Fate. Sorcerer, Agent of the Lords of Order," Once I properly stand on my feet, I hold my fists up with a glare. "Protector of The Crocks, Defender against darkness, chaos, and Kent Nelson's legacy until my dying breath."
She strikes another punch against my stomach, causing me to collapse back to the ground. I try to stand again but instantly two copies of her pin my arms down, making sure I stayed put. "Didn't expect me to know a duplicate spell, huh? Let me get a better look at you, darling." She waves her hand in front of my face and I helplessly watch as my helmet disintegrates. Thankfully, it still kept the rest of my Doctor Fate suit. "Even with a few cuts on your face, you still look so much like your father."
"You have no right to talk about him when you're working with the man who murdered him, you psychotic bitch." I grit my teeth.
Instantly she strikes a punch across my cheek which sends my face to jerk to the right. "Freya, do you seriously want to perish for this town?" She swings again, forcing my head to move to the left. "For this planet? Fine!" And another. "If you die, I can always take your helm and bestow it to someone who understands my vision. Maybe even lock it away so that the legacy will tarnish!" She swings several more punches, sending my head consistently moving side to side with each hit.
What was maybe minutes felt like hours with each punch she swung against either my chest or my head to the point where her gloves became coated with blood along with splatters on her helmet.
I could barely make out her face due to the swelling of my eyes but I felt her lift me by the collar, panted breaths escaping her lips as her duplicates merged into her once more.
I expected at least one more hit to finish me off but through my blurry vision, she held her bloodied fist mid-air. Almost hesitant.
She shakes her head with a groan of annoyance. "I don't get it! About a year ago, you were fighting for a cause to make America better! Even if it came at a cost! What's the difference between what we can do now? With the helmet, you'll outlast every fragile insignificant thing on this planet! At the rate society is handling its world, you'll live long enough to watch it crumble before your eyes! Everyone and everything you love will be gone! What will you have after a thousand years?"
"I'd have," I let out a cough which causes a splatter of blood to coat the floor. "memories of the people I love. My friends, my family—"
She huffs and slams me back to the ground, creating a deeper crater. "Stop talking and fight back!"
I let out a shaky breath as I slowly shook my head no. "My girlfriend, who will definitely be pissed at me later for pushing past my limit," I slowly look up to meet her fist raised again, her knuckles crackling with black electricity. "and you, Mom."
Her eyes slightly widen in disbelief. "Then you're asking for a death sentence."
"Maybe...maybe not." I weakly shrug before slowly lifting my hands to press onto the sides of her head. "But I can show you what makes life worth saving."
My amulet brightly glows in between us and instantly flashes of memories fill my thoughts and play like a movie.
Memories of hanging out with Rick, Beth, Courtney, and Yolanda, laughing at Mike and Jakeem chasing after Buddy with their action figure in his mouth. Memories of Pat and Barbara practically treating me as their daughter. Moments of my small lunch-ins with Inza at Richie's diner.
Even memories of Larry, Paula, and Artemis showing off the decorated cake as their attempt to show that they supported me along with cheering for Artemis at her practice. Even a memory with Cindy as she and I walked to the cafeteria together, insisting that I be selfish for once.
But to my surprise, I managed to dig through her memories of when I first learned how to ride a bike as my parents watch with proud smiles. Memories of when my mom happily sang to me in my bedroom to put me to sleep. Moments of when they celebrated my first birthday with them.
But one memory in particular stuck out to me.
"Here she is! Mr. and Mrs. Nelson, meet your baby girl!" The nurse quietly cheered as she handed the newborn to a tired Inza, who was being consoled by my father.
"Look at her, Kent." Inza whispered with tears springing in her eyes. "She's perfect."
"Look at her little hands. I don't think I've seen someone so small and delicate." Kent lightly chuckled. "She's going to become exactly like you, Kait. Strong, resilient, loving."
I slowly look over to the present-Inza, seeing her expression soften as she watched the scene in front of her.
"I can't wait for us to teach her so much about the world. To watch her learn and grow." Inza leans a bit forward, pressing a quick kiss against his cheek. "I'll always protect you little one, I swear it."
"Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Nelson." The nurse clasped her hands together with a warm smile. "Do you have a name in mind?" Inza and Kent share cheeky smiles until they look down at the infant.
"Freya Nelson." I glance over to Inza in surprise, seeing as she said the name as well but she rubbed the sides of her head with a pained expression. "Stop it. No—I'm in control!"
"That's a beautiful name, miss. I wish you all the best. I'll leave you to yourselves while I get the paperwork." The nurse says before exiting the hospital room.
"Can I hold her?" Kent gently asked Inza and she immediately nods, allowing him to carefully take the baby from her arms. "Freya, you may not understand a single word we say at the moment but one day you'll understand that if there are days when I might be whisked away on a mission, I want you to know that you have the most wonderful mother who will always protect you. Who will always be there for things that I might not relate to. Maybe even embarrass you in front of the person that becomes lucky enough to date you...you know, after I scare them a little."
"But," She playfully smacked his leg which causes Kent to chuckle. "no matter how far or close either one of us is, one thing for sure is that we will never stop loving you. Any path you decide for yourself, we will always support you on your journey."
"Agh—!" Something thumps behind me and I turn, seeing Inza lying unconscious on the floor.
"Sorry love, you would've done the same." The person lightly chuckled before his eyes met mine. "Long time no see, huh kiddo?"
My expression immediately breaks into a grin. "Dad." I whisper before I sprint over and pull him into a tight embrace. "I thought I would never see you again."
"It took a lot of begging," He pulls away, tucking some of my hair strands behind my ear. "but Nabu saw how much you've grown with the helm and is impressed with how fast you've developed your abilities. With a bit of boost from his power and yours combined, I get to spend time with you and your mom in Nabu's dimension as long as I keep the balance between the Lords of Order and the Lords of Chaos intact. I managed to get some free time but...I can see that you're a bit occupied at the moment."
"That's an understatement." I chuckle as I pull away, waving a hand over her form and she floats from the ground near my dad's waist level.
He takes a step toward her with a warm smile. "It's been years since I last saw her and yet...she still looks beautiful as ever." He looks to meet my eyes. "And you, my dear? How's your girlfriend?"
My eyes widen in surprise. "You know?"
"Of course I do! What, you think Nabu keeps me in the dark from society? Now tell me or on my next visit I will make you bring her along so I can interrogate her myself."
I couldn't help but smile in remembrance of a certain Latina. "She's...so amazing. Too amazing that sometimes I think I'm not worthy enough to be with her."
"You're scared to lose her, huh?" I nod with reluctance. "Freya, it took me a long time to accept that I wouldn't be better off spending the rest of my days locked away in a tower with only Nabu. I thought no one in their right mind would accept this life. Do you know who proved me wrong?"
"Nabu?"
He shook his head. "Your mother, Kaitlyn, showed me that I wasn't just Doctor Fate. In the suit, I'm only Doctor Fate but any other time, I shouldn't forget that I'm Kent Nelson. Before I even put on the helm I was an archaeologist and she encouraged me to continue doing what I loved. If not for her, I wouldn't be where I am today. I'm sure you can say the same for Yolanda, right?"
I nod. "Her and our friends. They opened my eyes about myself."
"So don't let Doctor Fate overshadow Freya Nelson. You deserve to spend your life with the people you love."
I let his words sink for a moment until I pull him in a hug once more. "Thank you."
"Of course. I'm so proud of you, Freya. Don't you ever think differently. You're doing so well as Doctor Fate."
I pull away and glance down at Inza's form. "So...what do we do to get Mom back to normal?"
"You've gotta cleanse out the chaos aura from her body. All you have to do is press your hands against the sides of her head." Before I could move, he quickly grabs my wrist to halt my movements. "Hey, but take it easy, alright? It's gonna hurt tremendously if you don't absorb it correctly. The consequences—"
"Dad," I gently cut in. "I've got this."
He nods with a smile. "Right. Sorry." He chuckles before he pulls me in for a quick hug once more. "Just in case I can't convince Nabu to give our visit a second chance but...I'll see you soon, okay? I love you."
"I love you too." I whisper before I finally turn to my mom and press my fingers against the sides of her head.
Jolts of electricity course through my fingers, feeling as it trickles across from my arms to my chest. A wrenching ache tightens in my heart which causes me to shut my eyes with a groan at the unbearable feeling.
Come on, Freya. Focus!
I pull my hands away with a gasp, absorbing the last bits of Inza's chaos aura which makes her release her hold. I yank the amulet off of her neck and instantly we fall to the ground with tired breaths.
I take off her helmet and toss it to the side which causes my dad's journal to reappear and land next to us. "Inza?" I pat her face a few times. "Are you there?"
"What...huh? Who's Inza?" She mutters as she dizzily blinks a few times. "Where am I?"
"You're Inza. What's the last thing you remember?"
"No, I'm Kaitlyn Nelson. I was in an excavation with a friend of mine in the Valley of Ur. I was following a lead to find my—" She clutches the sides of her head with a pained look. It worked. "Ugh..."
Oh god, who knows how long this thing made her a host?
Suddenly, a loud crash from the junkyard causes me to look up in concern. I have to get back over there. I quickly slide my amulet around my neck, feeling the familiar cosmic energy once more. That's better.
"Okay, okay. Come on." I carefully help her to stand, ignoring the sharp pain in my stomach as I bent down to grab her helmet and my father's journal.

A/N:
Y'all,,,bc of Coachella I became a stan of blackpink LOL like i cant believe I've been missing out for so long. I couldn't even choose a favorite band member bc they're all so talented and pretty ;___; (the typa girl performance??? AH—)
ANYWHO Freya will show off her powers next chapter I swear! She defeated Doctor Chaos (btw i didn't make that up. Doctor Chaos exists in the dc universe hehe) without the amulet so imagine her battle with Jordan hehe it's been a long time coming.
Btw Freya definitely hates the phrase 'dear' or 'my dear' bc of Inza lmao.
Also since we're nearing the end, I had to throw in one last interaction with Kent Nelson :'))) luv him and miss him dearly. Debating whether to add in an interaction/reunion for Kaitlyn and Kent or just have it as a bonus chapter at the end idk maybe might just leave it for y'all to imagine LOL
I hope you all have/had an amazing day! Bye!
