Y/N's POV
I've always wondered why someone would be selfless enough to throw themselves in front of danger just to protect someone whom they treasured. It seemed so stupid and dramatic. Why would someone just toss their life away? I know that I value mine above all else.
There's no way in hell that I'd be some sacrifice for another pathetic life that wasn't my own. I was just as precious as anyone else, right?
Now that I had developed a deep infatuation with someone who I had just met the other day, I could feel those emotions bubble inside me as they start to change. It was absurd. Just because I liked him a little more than the rest of the students here wouldn't mean I would sacrifice myself for him.
But...
Kaito was a bright light, and I was the shadow walking behind him. His boisterous laughter and strong words of encouragement didn't mix with my annoyed grumbling and sarcastic remarks. When I finally got the chance to talk to him, I had shied away.
However, being the bright star that he was, he tried regardless of my retreat and rejection.
"Hey, you with the H/C hair!" He called with joy embedded in his voice. "I don't think I've met you yet."
Reluctantly, I stopped in my tracks, slightly turning my head to face him although he couldn't see most of my features.
"I don't think you'd want to meet me." I said barely above a whisper, turning back around. "I'm just going to kill or be killed anyways. It's best not to get too close to anyone."
Before I could once again walk off, I felt a large hand on my shoulder, forcing me to stop.
"Turn around."
"No." I said harshly, feeling anger swell within the pit of my stomach. "I don't want to be associated with anyone, nonetheless you."
"Ouch." He chuckled bitterly.
A strong force exerted from my shoulder twisted me around. My eyes were at the same level as his goatee, and I didn't bother to look up at his expression.
'But damn is this guy tall.'
"Look at me."
I huffed out in annoyance, showing my lack of interest for our little encounter. Of course it was nice to be near someone who you liked slightly above the rest, but it wasn't so nice for them to be basically interrogating you and bossing you around.
"What do you want?" I glared up at him, my eyes seemingly to shoot out venom.
"I just want to know more about you." He smiled, letting his hand fall to his side. "Plus, it's always nice to make more friends."
My eyes adverted so that they were looking at the ground. "I don't make friends." I spat coldly. "For all you care, I could slit your throat right now."
He seemed to flinch a bit before that damn smile returned to his face. "Then do it."
Taken aback, I could only stare at him, trying to process what sort of thoughts were running through his empty mind. Did he seriously just challenge me to kill him?
"Don't underestimate me." I shot back, feeling a bit of discomfort by his previous statement. "I-I know a lot about martial arts."
Kaito could only grin wider. "Hey, you finally opened up about something!"
Immediately, my face flushed, leaving me more vulnerable than I was before. "Ugh, you're impossible."
"Nothing's impossible." He responded back.
"Then suck my nonexistent dick." I smirked. "Or fuck that boy over there." I pointed to a short male with purple hair.
"Er..." His hand rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly, his face tinted pink. "T-Take back what I said then..."
"Gladly." I found myself smiling at him. It was rare for me to curve my lips upwards. They were always down in a frown, but this felt different. It felt pleasant.
"Hm..." He hummed, tapping his chin. "You look nicer smiling. You should do it more often."
My eyes widened before I narrowed them and covered the lower half of my face. "W-Whatever..."
"Kaito!" Another voice interrupted our conversation. A girl with long brown hair tied into two pigtails with red scrunchies waved at him. "Let's go! Kaede says she has a plan for ratting out the mastermind!"
"Ah, ok! I'm coming!" He waved her away before grabbing my wrist.
"Wh-What are you doing?" I panicked, moving my feet as he started to move his.
"You gotta be there, too!" He laughed merrily. "By the way, I never caught your name."
Looking at his big hand covering my entire wrist, I smiled softly, my face slightly tinted red at the cheeks. "L/N... Y/N L/N..."

"Y/N!"
As I was leaving my dorm, groggy and still trying to believe that morning had already arrived, I heard the usually loud voice call out to me.
"Momota..?" I asked, half asleep while rubbing my eyes. "What do you need this time?"
When my eyes could see clearly, I saw the expression of panic and worry on his face. He was as pale as a ghost.
"Makiroll... I haven't seen her... She's gone."
I flinched with guilt, feeling angry at myself for feeling a bit of relief at that statement. It was obvious that I shouldn't be feeling like this. It was wrong.
"Are you sure she's not sleeping?" I asked, cocking an eyebrow at him.
"Y-Yeah, her door was wide open..." He mumbled. "I'm worried that something happened to her... I don't know what I would do if she were gone. You know... how I feel about her, right..?"
Staring at him for a moment, I nodded. Sadness washed over me, the coldness that I had felt before meeting him still blanketing around me.
"Of course..." I smiled bitterly. "I am your closest friend, after all."
Kaito smiled in relief, hugging me. "I know I can always count on you to make me feel better. So... will you help me find her?"
I nodded, hiding my raging jealously for the assassin. Even when Kokichi had gotten her to admit that fact, Kaito didn't seem fazed by it at all. He still stared at her with love in his violet eyes.
To say it was painful would be quite the understatement.
Kaito led the way around while I followed him as if I were a puppy, scanning my surroundings to see if there was a single streak of red anywhere.
"Hey, Momo..." I mumbled softly, the nickname seemingly to slip off my tongue. "Do you really love Maki..?" My hand tugged at the sleeve of his coat that he draped over his shoulders.
He turned around to gaze at me, his face clearly conflicted to how he was going to answer my question.
"It's Momo now, aye?" His bitter chuckle resonated through me. "It's... just how you define 'love'. I guess you could call it that, but I don't know. C'mon, let's keep looking."
Before he could grab my wrist and drag me along, I pulled away and questioned again. "What if..." I bit my lip, trying to suppress my emotions. "What if something happened to you and I while we were looking. This could be a trap, you know..?"
Heaving a heavy sigh, he stared at me, his eyebrows furrowed. "I can defend myself, Y/N. I can also protect you and everyone else here. It's my job."
I felt a deep fury bellowing within me, an unjustified one at that. "Kaito... anyone here can die. I can die, and Maki could die. None of us are safe."
He glared at me after he heard the name he treasured so much put next to other phrases that sounded horrible. "Unless that I'm gone, Maki is timeless, and so are you. Do you doubt me?"
Quietly, I shook my head, feeling the dampness in my eyes starting to grow. "You know what, you can go and find Maki on your own. I-I'm just going to go..." Quickly, I turned on my heels and sprinted off, my eyes downcast and dropping a trail of tears.
Kaito's POV
She ran away... they all did eventually anyways...
Sighing, I ran my fingers through my hair, clearly frustrated at the situation. The thought of Maki's corpse scared me, but the sight of Y/N's body terrified me. It's clear that the emotions felt should be on the same level, but why was this different?
Guilt coursed through me as I stared at Y/N as she left. The nickname she gave me was girly... but it was cute nonetheless. I appreciated it.
As I continued forward, I had a foreboding feeling that I should look behind me, but I ignored it. Y/N already left me, and there was no one there.
Suddenly, something caught my eye. "M-Makiroll!"
She quickly turned around, her eyes narrowing at me. "D-Don't call me that..! It's embarrassing." Her cheeks were soon as red as her eyes as she darted them away from me. "What do you need? I'm busy."
'Blunt as always...'
"I just wanted to make sure you were okay." I gave her my signature smile.
However, when she blushed again like the tsundere she was, I couldn't help but stare at her. It was an odd feeling. To explain it, it wasn't as if I had butterflies in my stomach, it made me feel lightheaded.
Without another moment to spare, I gripped my head, trying to keep my balance.
"O-Oi, are you okay?" Maki asked, gripping onto my shoulders tightly.
"Yeah..." I muttered, my eyes meeting hers. "I just got... this really bad feeling..."
Y/N's POV
"WHY WERE YOU FOLLOWING US?" I cried aloud, clutching a knife in my hand. "AND WHY THE HELL WERE YOU HOLDING THIS?!" My arm was bleeding profusely as I had just been stabbed by the person I had least expected to see. There were other wounds that I couldn't feel or see. Everything was numb.
I caught him following me and Kaito, and during the scuffle, he was able to land a couple of stabs on me. However, I was able to grab the weapon from him.
He stared up at me in a daze, shocked that he had gotten caught. Soon, a devious yet shaky smile formed on his pale face. "You know how much Kaito pissed me off..." He said rather calmly. "It's just me trying to get along with everyone yet being faced with rejection while he walks around with that damn smile on his face!"
He lunged at me, trying to grab the knife from my reach.
"Kokichi! Stop!" I screamed the attempted attacker's name, trying to fight him off. "Th-This isn't you!"
"Since when..." His dull yet piercing magenta eyes stared into the dark abyss of mine. "Have you known me..?"
Before he could make another fatal move, I shut my eyes and swung the weapon down in whatever direction I could. I was terrified for my life and Kaito's.
I did not expect it to come into contact with anything, but you can imagine my horror when it did. My eyes now fully open, I could only stare at the boy's stomach as it bled out neon pink blood.
"K-Kokichi..?" I murmured, tears starting to pool around my eyes.
He fell back, his hand wrapped tightly around the knife as he used the last of his strength to pull it out and thrust it to the side. His head rolled over to face me, a pitiful smile on his face. "I... was always jealous of Kaito, y'know..?"
"H-Huh..?" I came closer to him to hear him better.
"So I used Maki as bait... and I planned to kill him... there..." He panted, his hand now soaked in the blood that was his own. "But he brought you along... and you ruined my plans..."
"I'm not letting you get away with killing him..!" I yelled at him, despite his voice being soft and his ears being fully open.
"He's lucky to have someone... like you..." When he chuckled, a bit of blood spurted from his mouth. "It's too bad that I didn't have any friends here before... I died."
"Kokichi..." I looked over him, my face showing pain and sorrow. "I'm so sorry..."
"No... It's my fault." He rolled his head over so that he faced away from me. "I never wanted despair... I just wanted..."
He looked back over at me, his weak hand slowly lifting up to pat my head.
"I just wanted a friend..."
His hand soon went limp as it dropped to his side.
I felt breathless as I stared at the corpse in front of me. After this, there will be a class trial, wouldn't there..? Panic flooded my mind as the tears I wept for both Kokichi and I fell onto the floor.
"I'll..." I said softly, barely above a whisper. "I'll be your friend..."

3rd POV
Y/N cleaned up quite well after the murder, washing and scrubbing to get the last bits of dried up blood off of her. Still shaken by the events that had unraveled, she started to cry again. This was the end, wasn't it?
She was clearly the only person who couldn't testify for herself to obtain a watertight alibi. It was useless to just try and cover up the crime she committed. The girl saw herself in the dictator's eyes, a lonely soul who just needed that one person to turn it around for them.
Sadly, he no longer had a chance of finding someone after his life was cut short after his jealousy had taken over him. For him to say that Kaito would be lucky to have Y/N would be absurd. Not even once had the astronaut appreciated the girl for the efforts she put into their friendship.
The body was found by the detective himself along with Maki and Kaito after the two had bumped into him along the journey back. Kokichi was the most annoying out of the bunch of students, but who would go out of their way to clearly state their resentment towards the boy?
When the class trial had rolled around, the truth was revealed.
Y/N's POV
Oh, how the tables had been turned on me. As soon as I step into that wretched room, Korekiyo gave me a look that had "I know you did it" written all over it.
Of course, he kept his pretty little mouth closed. I knew something about him and he knew something about me. Obviously, it was the sister kink and the lipstick under that mask. Explaining how I discovered his secret in the first place would take a lot of time... and mental capability.
In the middle of the class trial, Shuichi looked over at me, his eyes holding a sense of distrust and doubt in them. "I-I analyzed some of the clues and pieced everything together... but is this yours?"
He held out his palm and uncurled his fingers like a blooming flower. There, sitting right in the middle was the good luck charm I had gotten from Kaito just a few weeks ago. I treasured it like no other, and I spent countless hours yesterday and the day before looking for it.
Who knew it was to be used as evidence?
As soon as Kaito saw the charm, his eyes widened, and I could see him visibly angry at the boy who he once called his "bro".
"Just because it was there doesn't means she did it!" He countered before Shuichi continued forward. "You know what a red herring is, right?"
"Yes, but--"
"Then that's the end of it!" He burst out, lashing at the poor detective. "Y/N didn't do it! She was with me that morning, and she--"
A sudden realization hit him.
"She left me..."
I quickly looked away, trying to hide my guilt. My breathing became more rapid as I stared at the ground. The only words I could muster up were "I'm sorry."
Kaito looked over at me, shocked by my sudden apology. "B-But she wouldn't have a reason to kill Kokichi! Who would just leave just to kill someone? Answer that for me!" He cried, clenching his fists.
"An ambush." Saihara responded monotonously. "If that's the case, then it could've been for self-defense."
"Self... defense..?" Kaito repeated to himself. Soon, rage raked through his entire form. "That's--That's bullshit! There's no way that could've happened. Right, Y/N? Please... just tell them that I'm right..." He stared at me desperately, searching for an answer that was bound to be absent.
"Y/N, please come here..." Saihara said, beckoning me over.
"Why the hell should she?" Kaito butted in. "Y/N, stay where you are. This so-called detective's delusional."
"Y/N." Shuichi said once again, a soft look now on his face. "Please..."
Looking back, I could see Kaito's pleading eyes. "I'm sorry, Momo..."
I slowly strolled over to Saihara who quickly grabbed my arm and pulled me a bit closer.
"HEY, WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING?!" Kaito screamed, getting ready to leave his stand. "Get away from her!"
In a swift motion, Shuichi pulled down the neck hole of my shirt over my left shoulder, the one that was stabbed.
A knife wound was still visible there as only a few days had passed for it to heal. There were others along the side of my body that were cleverly hidden with clothing. I couldn't bring myself to look at anyone as they all gasped in shock. Just looking at Kaito would make me break down.
"Based on the length and width of the gash," Shuichi concluded. "I can safely say that the knife that was used to kill Kokichi was the same one used to stab Y/N. Now all we need is a confession."
Slowly, my eyes traveled up to look at Shuichi. The bill of his hat covered his eyes, but I could clearly see the look of disappointment reflected upon them.
Kaito was a broken man, shattered beyond repair. His eyes glanced at me, glossy with tears. A part of him screamed that Shuichi was wrong, and the other part forced him to swallow the truth. The mental battle was clearly printed across his face.
"Y/N..?" He muttered, staring at me from his stand.
I gave him a bittersweet smile. "I wanted to protect you."
"Huh..?" His mouth hung a bit open, confused to my statement. "Pr-Protect me--? But that's my job! I'm supposed to protect you!" He slammed his hands down on the podium, and I could feel the entire room shake.
"And you did..." I smiled. "Up until now... I always felt safe around you. It was time I return the favor after Ouma followed us, planning to kill you. I'm sorry everything ended up like this..."
"No..." He cried, slowly walking over to me and Shuichi. I did the same, but our expressions were both different: a smile and a frown.
"I just want to leave this world without regrets... so please... vote for me!" I cried, looking at him.
"I WON'T, DAMMIT!" He yelled. "You can't leave me..."
Everyone else watched the show unfold, some with uneasy looks on their face while others were ready to bust out the fold-up chair and some popcorn.
"And I don't want to leave you..." I said in return, my voice soft. My arms found their way around his waist since I was quite shorter than him. He towered over me at six feet, after all.
"Then don't..." He cried. "I wanted to tell you this for so long, but I couldn't... I always procrastinating, tricking myself into believing that I could say this to you whenever I was ready..."
"Please... just don't say anything..! You had your chance sooner... So please... don't let me leave with regrets!" I yelled, gripping onto him tighter.
Monokuma cleared his throat before announcing happily that the voting was underway. To see the despair on both of our faces would've made him full for the next few months. Sorrow was pouring all over at this point.
Everyone voted for me, and I was glad even if it brought a sense of melancholy.
Tears streamed down my face as I saw Kaito attempt to get closer to me before my fate. His hand brushed the side of my face although it was shaky and cold.
"Kaito..." I said softly, looking up at his eyes for protection and safety.
"Just... don't speak..."
Before I knew it, my eyes closed, and I could feel the brief yet warm sensation of his lips over mine. Doing this in front of everyone was bold, but that... that was Kaito's style.
After we separated, I decided it'd be the best time for my confession.
"Hey..." I cupped my hand around his face and wiped away the tears that strayed from his eyes. "I'm thankful that I got to meet someone like you, and I'm glad I finally got what I had been wishing for for so long. Just... save those tears for someone who is worth it... Kaito Momota... I love you..."
He immediately gripped my body in a tight hug, hoping that Monokuma couldn't whisk me away from him if he held tight enough. "Please don't go, Y/N... I love you, too..! I really wanted you to stay by my side... safe because I was here for you..."
In our last exchange of words and tears, Monokuma's chain snapped around my neck after I had left my impact not only on Kaito, but the rest of the students there.
"But I was never timeless to begin with, was I?"
